10 things you didn't know about Spiral Knights

Trivia!
1. One of the earliest designs for the game was called Avatar/Nemesis. It would have played very similarly to the current game but allowed players to power up at various points and become and 'Avatar' that protected protected the party, or a 'Nemesis' that betrayed or stalked parties. It was a neat idea and then, well, Demon's Souls was announced.
2. Early on, the Spiral Knights looked much more like conventional space marines (only cuter). Making them knight-like came a bit later when we determined the space marine look was too generic. Eventually they became 'tech knights.' That name stuck for a long time and to this day they are often referred to as 'tech knights' internally.
3. The stone puppy in the south west corner of the Haven Town Square is named 'Monomi.'
4. Gremlins were not always intended to be a monster that you could fight, but (in part) rather a means of explaining the existence of the Clockworks. We all agreed it would be cool to make them main characters and my original design for them were constructs that had faces like tools: wrenches, screwdrivers, etc. Ian took them in a different direction and I think we're all the better for it.
5. Back when the Spiral Knights were still space marines, the design called for heavy use of 'food' or items that were desired by monsters and could be used to distract them. Giant bees wanted honey comb and carnasaurs wanted meat. Players could carry them (like lift objects) and attract hordes of monsters while the rest of the party sneak past them. We eventually came to terms with the fact that when you give a player a weapon, they will always try to solve problems with it. Food is ignored and monsters are just attacked.
6. The pickup bar at the top of the screen and the vitapods are in the game as a result of my affection for Shiren the Wanderer and other rougelikes. I like the experience of 'leveling up' with every dungeon run and finding an assortment of tools.
7. The oldest surviving tileset (environment) in the game is sky islands (day time) and the oldest levels are the Aurora Isles.
8. The oldest surviving monster is the spookat. Spookats inhabited the earliest working prototype of SK we ever built. Sadly, this prototype no longer exists in a place that is easily accessible.
9. Haven's original look resembled something similar to a Ald'ruhn from The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind. As you might imagine, it really didn't look right. Thank goodness we hired Cory!
10. There's lots of secrets in the game, many that we will unveil as we continue to develop the world. However there is one that players see every day that so far as we've seen, no one has ever figured it out. Curious!

that number 10 is a bit vague is it in haven?
Is it the broken elevator in the Clockwork Terminals?

I hate books that end like that so mysterious......we see it everyday huh...... Also question about the nemisis and hero thing..... You could betray your party and then try to get them killed or? Ty for posting this :)

Thanks so much for posting this, Nick. Now i have to ponder #10. :-)
i have the really nice idea i wanna try (in which ill try on the 15th) but i just want this small hint but does it have anything to do with a dark ritual?

#10
I heard a rummor about that second FSC level >_>
You need a party of four people, take the two extra sprites and two water balloons onto the lift with you. I've tried it with one sprite and one balloon, and it for some reason cures the poor cursed fellow as long as you have the water. I've never tried both becuase I hate that room with the rocket puppy.

therefore I dont think it would be in the clockworks...something in haven i would belive.... not unless he is talking about the other side of haven with the knight and dynamite....mhm...

I must find it >:O *Runs around in Haven poking everything*
in the garden the gun puppy there is so suspicious to me its just sitting there likes its forever watching something or keeping some thing sealed then there is always Bosco who is always working on that mecha knight hmm this has me puzzled i kinda wanna check it out to bad i got banned -.-

Oh come on... At least give us a better clue on #10. I'm gonna lose sleep over that T_T
Is #10 the fountain - the water has no obvious source, and nowhere else in the clockworks do we see water in any form other than ice? The fanblades in the pool don't seem to have any effect on the current, either.
Why is the only water on the clockworks in haven?
dingle ur a genius i think i know what it is now

I thought the fanblades couldve been it. But there is water in the bazzar too, by the blue merchants.
My current theory is that if you play the strangers voices backwards there is a message. I mean, it sounds like a recording of someone talking backwards.
The water in the bazaar doesn't even HAVE a source, so it's probably been taken from the fountain.
There's still the question of where the fountain water comes from though.
#10-strangers are all mind controlled by snipes. Since all the houses in haven are clearly made for snipe living only. And every strangers in haven has some snipes sitting on them. The only exception is Basil. Who escaped the snipe mind controlling by hiding in the depth of the clockwork.
Snipes
- We see them every day
- They are in this game only for cosmetic effect (as far as we know)
- The strangers don't say much about them
They MUST be hiding something!
I did try to poke one however, and nothing happened. So my theory might be null because of that.....

Where do those pipes come from that lay in the ground....what do the lead to and what they are used for....

*Starts bugging the GM's for details*

Kewl. Cliffhangers though. /e Barfs all over the circuit board. Whoops.

"Curious" was enough for me to get it.
unreleased item revealed on "power surge" promo.
http://media.spiralknights.com/images/blogimages/v0/id/21.jpeg
also the older version with "curious" in its description.

1. Big companies have little monitors recording everyone so they can always steal ideas. I predicted Lara Croft when I was a teen (but then, which teenager wouldn't?)
3. And the Church of Monomi is born.
4. I assume your older idea was semi-reused as the Strangers then.
5. You just told us the theme mechanic of your next dungeon. Get to it. Now.
7. Trust me, it shows. As much as I find the Isles lovely, they could use a little refactoring and tightening up to mach the newer stages, mmn?
8. 'no longer exists in a place that is easily accessible'. Now I wanna get there...
10. Its about the knights themselves. Duh :P Frankly, I wonder why they leak heat like they're an insect from Lost Planet.
#9 So Haven is Boswick's fault!
#10 I bet it's the mystery switch at FSC.

Heat -> Vitasuit -> lost planet.
That could be it, I don't think so though...
If it turns out nick goes "I bet none noticed the knights can BLINK" I'm gonna get P-Oed. Otherwise, I continue searching...

Also, I don't think the magicat hat is the secret. Everyone knows that they had it in the beta >_>
There needs to be guild representation for the Church of Monomi.

I laughed at number 5- "[W]hen you give a player a weapon, they will always try to solve problems with it."
Anyways, let's break down number 10 logically.
-It's something that we see EVERYDAY. (I truly wonder if that word is important)
-No one has figured it out.
So how do you figure out something that is seen everyday? Is it something that we see everyday, but we don't understand the meaning of it?
My theory is that it has something to do with the login and character selection screen, or, at least the background behind it.
It's something that you see and have to see everyday.
Either that, or it's the snipes. They're cute, but I don't trust them.
Gah, not gonna sleep tonight x.x I think Zero is kinda on the right track, lets break it down, what do we see everyday when playing spiral knights?
#10: Why aren't there fish in the fountain in Haven?! ;-;
A few things that I noticed. Whether or not there is significance to them is another matter but...
1. Why are there tv antennas on all of the houses? Do they get the channel six news?
2. There are giant holes behind all of the platforms in the arcade and only one of them is blocked off (The one behind the krogmo alchemy machine and Sullivan).
3. Have any of you noticed that in clock work backgrounds within the machinery there are several large spherical pods nestled in one of the revolving cogs, however some are missing in the grooves set them. Plus there's a crane that could possibly be used to pick up said pods.
If we don't figure out 10, I'm going to be thinking about what it could be until we finally figure it out.

Oh I hate you nick.. oh I hate you so much. Nooooo your such a teaser! Give us some kind of clue! TELL US! Argh!!! Other then that last one which drove me insane this is a excellent post, thanks for posting it. Argh!
~Anti-nick~

In the arcade, in the right corner there is space for what could be a third exit.
oh I forgot to mention that one! Plus there's that whole fourth platform nearby that right corner that looks rather lonely.
Okay maybe this is a no durr kind of a thing but if you go all the way over to the right of the arcade there is that pod contraption mentioned in post 32 in the background
During the Preview they had an NPC on the right side of the Haven Proper and he said that that section of Haven was off limits for the time being. Since then he and his barricades have been traded in for a permanent stone wall so we can only assume we will not be making it over there any time soon.
You guys are getting a little too nitpicky about #10 in my opinion.
The way that Nick worded it makes it sound like it's something that needs some sort of player action to accomplish, not merely an observance like the 4th platform and etc.
"However there is one that players see every day that so far as we've seen, no one has ever figured it out. Curious!"
He uses "seen" so it's something obtainable in game (equipment/costume maybe?) that isn't well known, or a place (hidden room maybe?), or it could be something in the games surroundings very much less obvious and far more "secretive" than the 4th platform that someone would be like "wow! look at that! *screenshot*" like in Halo 2 with the secret messages on the wall of a hard to reach and out of the way room in a certain level.
And then there's the "Curious!" at the end. Most likely nothing, but could very well be another hint. "Curiosity killed the cat (kat?)".
Yea, I made that "Curious!" connection too but what cat does every player see?
Konjuring Kat? Nothing is known about that dude though.
It's most likely just nothing, I was just throwing it out there. It's the least important part to the "hint" in my opinion as lot's of people use the word 'curious' in such a manner.
The most "common" one that most players have a chance of seeing is in Moorcroft?
If we see it every day, it has to be one of the following:
* A secret in Haven
* A secret in the log-in screen
* A secret that's present in any given floor of the clockworks
It's also never been posted before this thread as far as Nick has seen. It may have been posted in this thread and he's just letting us go crazy anyways.

Someone make this a competition and fund a prize to first person to work it out!!! :3

Well, I don't see the Konjuring Kat everyday.
I think something everyone sees everydayt has to be either on the players themselves, or in Haven (the only place eveyone is in everyday)
Things I also see everyday, in no particular order... elevators, Basil, the broken elevator at the Terminakl (which I always hoped it would allow us to bypass boss strata / fight regular levels instead of boss levels) vitapods, potion flasks, The Arcade, Krogmo's face, the Arena and its denizens, ourselves, The Clockworks' background... what else?

Here are my guesses.
-Mysterious hidden switch in one of the FSC levels
-Related to Konjuring Kat
-Perhaps something in Emberlight (the place seems too... empty. Too easy to hide something there)
-Perhaps something related to the Core
-Something in Haven (Snipes? Water only being in Haven?)
WAIT A MINUTE. EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT EDIT
Nick, on the Kat hat thread:
"I can't speak for the hats, but expect a little something katty coming up in a future update."
Moorcroft Manor probably will play a part in this, what with the strange train tracks, the dead end hallway/coffin room, Konjuring Kat...
By "players see everyday" you have to take differently than if there was an "every" preceding the sentence. "Players see everyday" could be literally anything in the game as it doesn't specify what KIND of players. Nick didn't put an "every" in the sentence, so be careful with that when thinking about the options here.

Well, lets see then, what kind of players is he talking about? THE good ol' average player? Where the average player spends most of their time? Or rather, whats the most visited place in the Cradle?
Who knows! haha There's no headway being made in this thread. I don't think there's enough to go on to be honest. Someone is going to have to luckily stumble on it. Or wait till it's revealed to us. haha
I've given up searching around, been everywhere in every corner looking at every background element, etc etc (everywhere except the dungeons; which seems the least likely place for a "secret").
Good luck everyone.

I bet there were some delays on the new content so
Nick is just stalling with this "Curious" thing...
Curious...
Curious...
Curious GEORGE.
It's a monkey.....wait? Ahhh.......
I guess i'll just have to log on and start playing to
find our what it is.

I'm running around doing up up down down left right left right abab.

As for #10: You are such a tease, you know that?
Still really neat trivia that I doubt anyone knows. I totally figured out #7 a while back though, it's just kind of a feeling you get when you compare those levels to the current ones.
