A Suggestion regarding future updates

Reading through the Patch Notes for the July 30th update, I noticed something. OOO has a vision for Spiral Knights, and wants to make the game, community and structure even better. They want us to party up, and want to discourage soloing, as single-player wasn't their creative ambition when creating this game. I loved the changes, the promise of "Exciting Missions" and additions to the already-exciting Battle Sprite system.

However, some of this didn't work the way we, the players wanted it to. The Forge added a incredibly unwanted Luck element we didn't really want. I personally love the concept, and enjoy the choice of risk, testing your luck, but it just didn't cater to players needs. They wanted to level up their weapons, and didn't think it actually did this in the right way. I dislike the new revive system, and how I have to grind for something I didn't have to before; The right to revive.

But i'm 100% in love with their creative vision. I want reasons to party up with my friends, but you accidentally took mine away. The community kept rejecting the hours of work that OOO put into their updates. Sometimes it did work, sometimes it didn't. However, I believe there is a way to reduce this trial-and-error type of update.

How about you tell the community what you want to do, and we have our say in it? If you asked the community, for example; "How could we make you want to party up with other people instead of soloing?" The community would answer, and if there was any flaws in an idea, the community would debate it amongst themselves. I believe seeing what the consumers think before putting pen to paper would make all parties happier, and would stop the community shunning changes in most occasions. If you could see the outcry over some systems at the moment, would you choose to still include them?
I trust OOO to come out with the right decisions for their own game eventually, but this could reduce the amount of trial and error involved in the process.

By no means do I mean that this is the most practical way of doing it, but any extra communication would be very much appreciated. Explaining to the community, or certain members of it, such as those which are to be in the preview server would give extra opportunities for people to provide their opinion or constructive criticism before hours of work are spent into a feature that the community may fall in love with.. or hate with all their hearts.

Did you say this is a suggestion? I think you should move this thread here.

The community telling the Developers what they want is what Jagex did with RuneScape.

It did increase the quality of most of their updates but as a downside it made the community more complacent and saw the increase in spam, quitting threads and bad threads.

At the end of the day, you

At the end of the day, you can't please everyone and the loud minority will always be loud and try to convince everyone that they are the majority.

Pay it no heed and carry on - you will soon find friends that do stick around.

best compromise leaves everyone complaining. that's the job. you get something but you leave something else. don't tell me you disliked free elevators.

Really? I thought that what made Runescape terrible was Jagex completely ignoring the community. Sort of like what Three Rings did for the changes to the loot system, the alchemy system, the revive system...

It would be nice if Three Rings actually patrolled the Suggestions forum to find suggestions that are well-written (cough cough) and responded with things like "Hey, that's a good idea," or "No, we're not implementing this, here's why." Maybe reduce the building sense that the dev team doesn't care anymore and/or Sega's running the show.

A suggestion in general discussion

"No, we're not implementing this, here's why." ?

Telling your playerbase why you don't like their ideas is the fastest way to make them quit your game.

I don't feel like I need to be involved in their decisions at all, but I would very much like to know what the overall creative direction is, and where OOO plans on taking the game in the future. An MMO is something that evolves, and unless I see it evolving in a way that I like I'm not going to spend any money on it.

I feel like the developers have been keeping pretty quiet lately, and it makes me think that they're up to something suspicious. People who are doing good work that they're proud of, and are excited to be working on don't keep this quiet. I know I'd want my game's community to know exactly what I was doing with their game.

Ignoring them completely is an even faster way to make them quit your game.

Keep in mind that they wouldn't just say "Your suggestion is bad and you should feel bad." They would give detailed reasons as to why it's a bad idea and/or provide rebuttals to arguments against an unpopular change.

Yes, I'm aware that those features were by popular demand. The point I'm making is that Three Rings needs to give more feedback to the community regarding suggestions; could you link me to a dev post replying to a thread for any of those suggestions?

It was my understanding that

It was my understanding that generally they don't reply to the suggestion forum, for the same reason show writers and authors don't want you to show them their fanfiction. They also don't want to get peoples hopes up for something they might not be able to implement (or they might be working on implementing a suggestion but it's a secret for the time being because they may have to scrap it).

It's generally understood for any online game that the devs aren't going to post much if at all in the suggestion forum, I don't know why you think it should be any different for OOO.

they can't do that. as hyperion once said, if they like/dislike a suggestion either:
1 the suggester will feel they have their approval and spam suggestions, and others will follow him.
2 the suggester will start ranting about OOO not listening ever to the suggestions.
3 in general, the effects of one GM/dev comment are amplified to the extreme.
