What's wrong? Tell ya what's wrong

OOO is failing to keep in touch with the SK community.

First off, I know how Sega has SK as a franchise and et cetera. blah blah legal wager... so Sega is probably behind all this nonsense with the forced reskins and money milking, but hear me out. Would it be completely Sega's fault that the game has changed this much? Does OOO not have any power over what they make their game to be like? Anyways,

Why is OOO, in recent times, coming up with huge game-changing updates? It is because OOO has failed as a community master to coerce with the whole of community. Let's just recall what game-changing updates occur this year. For all of you, we should be able to identify at least one, the Battle Sprite Update on 30th July 2013.

I am going to focused on the energy changes, rather than the battle sprites. I have little issues with Battle Sprites. The main thing I'm going to rant about is the energy system. Belated, but here it is. The main dispute over the energy system is that it was restricting gameplay, sort of like how Facebook Tetris did, and all other mobile/facebook apps out there.

This is where I am not sure what happened, unless OOO decides to disclose the truth. It is possible that Sega as a publisher, seeing all these criticism that they forced OOO to rebuild the game's core mechanics, and possibly in such a short time. It is in this manner that the new system was implemented, and OOO has yet to reestablish the game's original format, mainly speaking about Half-pip reviving and the new Forge system.

And yet, even after so, with lots of threads ranting and complaining, OOO has failed to communicate to us. If there is a reason why some of the functions of the old system wasn't brought back, it should be told. Otherwise, they might be just blatantly ignoring us. I know, they still read the threads, but I think there is room for communication.

Next thing you know, Arcade Redux. Promised to be something to bring back the arcade, it has hardly been mentioned again. Again, communication. They could have at least tell us what we are being promised, and allow room for discussion and how to improve it. One issue I have is that Valestone and Moonstone minerals are no longer useful. They have practically 0 value. These are some issues that need to be fixed.

Afterwards, we get a shortage of radiants. This have been going on for a very long time, and I do clearly see why it is a problem. Generally the forge system is practically another way of cashing in on the consumers. It is completely scandalous. It is punishing to everyone. Because of the lack of the energy system, the game has driven itself to a grinding system. Progression is hampered and OOO is throwing everything to make you progress slower and slower.

Now we even see Winterfest as a disaster, with more grinding because, guess what? Lack of energy system. Why isn't any of these events beta tested yet? I don't see a fit reason to disallow these event missions to be beta tested. Has anyone even brought up this point?

Next in line is the gunner update. Do we know what type of guns are coming out yet? It's in development, the most we should be able to obtain is information and plans on the guns. Rather carefully plan it out with the community to help, or waste the development time until the guns come out, and wait till the community scold and rage over how unbalanced the guns are? People are still complaining about the unbalanced weapons and armors in the game.

So what will it be? I do dearly hope that OOO can at least bite back at Sega if they are the cause of all these. OOO should have our support, and OOO should realize to rely on us too. Games do not rely only on the developers, they also rely on the community. No game can ever go without the consumer base.

TL;DR : Game looks like pay-to-win, OOO removes energy system, lack of energy system = more grinding, everyone complains, and OOO has yet to say anything. Now flame me, ban me, do whatever you want to me.

It feels like OOO has a big

It feels like OOO has a big barrel.

And that big barrel is filled with pieces of paper.

And on those pieces of paper is a random word.

Every 2 months or so they grab 3 pieces of paper out of the barrel and call it an event.

Or maybe they just have a folder somewhere filled with "Ideas that didn't make it into the release".

Also "lack of energy system = grinding" is nonsense, I had to grind all the way to that 800ce even when we had mist, grinded JK more times than I care to admit for that.

Edit from k to something big.

Back when we had mist system:
> You need to pay real money for Promo.
> You can't explore the game since you only can play 10 level a day. With that limit, you only can play FSC so it will not become a waste.
> Buy elevator pass with real money.
> Buy DLC with real money.
> Heating are easy.
> Old revive system which allows teamwork and make the game more newbie friendly

Now:
> You can now pay CE for promo. More accessible to F2P
> You can explore the whole game freely.
> No mist, so no need for ele pass.
> DLC are now purchasable with CE
> Forge system which annoyed a lot of people.
> New revive system which being hindrance to teamwork. But now death mean something, instead of "oh im ded? cool."
> Bribe Krogmo is not worth anymore.

I'm not arguing with OP or something. I just want make a comparison for those who are confuse. Kbye.

gods ain't gonna help you, son.

game companies in general are very reluctant to say "we screwed up". OOO did it many times over the years (magnus line, beta enemies, oRSS) and just the fact they don't respond means they know.
then I agree that there are serious communication issues between OOO' staff and the community. I have already written a support mail (with post scriptums, cause I know you will read) and for now they (hyperion) said that they (the rocket snipe) have read it. I really want a response, but for now, I'm just stating this.

[P.S.: the post scriptum part is for Hyperion, he knows.]

Sigh.

Hey Annilaton. I like heard that the Dev team is not with the Community Management Team. I lahk heard they rarely communicate significantly. So lahk yeah. Poor Eury.

I also like heard that Energy revive prices are a lot cheaper. By 980 Energy at times. So lahk yeah.

Hey, I lahk heard that SEGA isn't doing that well. And that acquiring companies costs money. Like, a lot. Yeah. 4real.

...

Alright, acting like a typical teenager on the internet was a worse idea than giving sharks acid flamethrowers.

Now we even see Winterfest as a disaster, with more grinding because, guess what? Lack of energy system. Why isn't any of these events beta tested yet? I don't see a fit reason to disallow these event missions to be beta tested. Has anyone even brought up this point?

Hey hey hey hey hey. Guess what. You know that Impostoclaus Hat? Before, last year, it could be gotten from promo boxes, which came with any 10$ or more purchase. And it was only a chance. You could get other stuff possibly too. Sometimes only confetti and snowballs. Yep.

Alright, my intellectual half of my brain is now flaming my stupid side, so time to act more intelligent.

Does OOO not have any power over what they make their game to be like?

Not much really. It's called a contract. Have you ever seen those stereotypical used car salesmen and stuff? Those contracts and such are worded in a precise manner to milk money out of you.

So what will it be? I do dearly hope that OOO can at least bite back at Sega if they are the cause of all these.

Sure. And then afterwards SEGA will chew OOO's butt off by breaking off their sponsoring so OOO will have even less money to develop!

OOO is failing to keep in touch with the SK community.

Have you ever seen other MMO forums?

Generally the forge system is practically another way of cashing in on the consumers. It is completely scandalous.

And 20 bucks a month elevator passes (giving you 100 free energy a day technically), extraordinarily powerful P2P weapons, and the like didn't bother you at all?

It is because OOO has failed as a community master to coerce with the whole of community.

You just gave me a rare condition. Like, the kind that makes you travel back in time and type like a typical internet teenager for a few minutes. How about this; you do some research on how a gaming team works, with specific members doing forums, others art, throw in some human miscommunication and such, the fact that community managers are the least paid peeps in the gaming industry usually, and throw in human lack of communication as well.

Time to put my stupidity cap on.

One difference between Winterfest this year and last year is the token exchange rate. Now it costs more tokens to grab your santy hats and winterfest boxes? Isn't that clearly how the removal of energy system breeds grinding?

And when I said lack of communication, I am not directing it at the community masters that is the game masters. I know their job is to maintain community coercion, and do not impede on game development. What I am directing to is OOO as a development team, and the failure to maintain communication is seen by the lack of reasoning behind the all the recent changes happening. Did they say that they will put in Battle Sprites because the community wanted them, or they were merely obliged to do so because all other MMORPGs have them.

As for what you said about the pay-to-win scheme, "And 20 bucks a month elevator passes (giving you 100 free energy a day technically), extraordinarily powerful P2P weapons, and the like didn't bother you at all?" Well hold it there, no one said you had to pay for those, and "technically" you can bypass it and still do as well. Now with the new forge system, and "adjusted radiant drops" for who knows how long it has been, with us not seeing a fit reason from OOO during that period of time, has it yet allow you to ponder how much of a gap is there between OOO and the community?

And please, I seek to further discussion on what do you think is wrong with OOO. I may be that typical teenager and keyboard warrior, but hey, aren't you too :3. Here I am is to clarify the issues on which I stated above.

Well then.....

First of all......

1) It was a very wise decision to remove the mist system, mainly because it was a huge limiting factor and caused a majority of the players to have to spend money on CE......
2) But grinding would become a serious issue, so, they made the forge system. Yes, I agree it is worse than the original system, but it was for the greater good of the community.........
3) And Sparks were introduced for the same reason, although they kind've went just a little tiny bit overboard with the idea, with the drop rates and cost, but otherwise.........
4) And now to a random point! Arcade redux, well, its hard to say. My opinion: OOO has done things like this before, and it hasn't hit the "overdue point" of around 4-6 months (I think) in which the implement should have been, well, implemented. Hard to explain, but OOO either releases things without a lick of information, or waits a long time....
5) Yes, those 2 minerals ARE useless, but I will say something about this.......
6) Radiants, yes. I cant believe how some non-critical item in the game that made a majority of the gamers happy because since its disappearance allowed rare shining crystals to thrive and make Vanguards happy has now disappeared! How could you OOO?......
7) Winterfest? Apocrea? Grinding: Yes. Free-to-play: Yes. Better than what would have happened if there was an energy system (OOO: Now, in order to get these new weapons, please pay $20 for these new weapons or just pay that much in CE for all you F2Ps!): Yes.
8) Now, this arguement is biased and based off the prediction that the new storyline update and gunner update and the probable update of those 2 minerals getting a use are all in one package. So far, no beta testing, no real information, and that means no real good or bad things. And since OOO is taking their time, it seems that all those arn't the only thing on their mind...........

Jeez louise, who ate the cheese.

Now, back on topic:

Time to put my stupidity cap on.

Oh dear lord why.

One difference between Winterfest this year and last year is the token exchange rate. Now it costs more tokens to grab your santy hats and winterfest boxes? Isn't that clearly how the removal of energy system breeds grinding?

One difference between Winterfest this year and last year is that people had 9 more months to stock up on Krogmo Coins. WOAH LOOK OOO GAVE EVERYONE A FREE KROGMO COIN BOOSTER. Did anyone make a thank you thread? I don't recall one.

Did you think that you could run through this without paying attention to old suggestions? People DID suggest pets, and OOO obliged, like the AP split damage turning into pure elemental, and such. Jeez.

OH DEAR LORD WHY. Put back on your not-stupidity cap please. Well no one said you had to pay for Radiant Fire Crystals, and though it's a problem, it's not as much as:

-Getting to explore the Clockworks for free while most other people can't, thus letting you not have to grind FSC all day or cut playtim.
-3000 free energy for rage crafting. Derp.

has it yet allow you to ponder how much of a gap is there between OOO and the community?

First off, I know how Sega has SK as a franchise and et cetera. blah blah legal wager

Oh for crying out loud.

And please, I seek to further discussion on what do you think is wrong with OOO. I may be that typical teenager and keyboard warrior, but hey, aren't you too :3. Here I am is to clarify the issues on which I stated above.

Alright, I concede this point. I had previously assumed you were some random minimal-effort person with a crabby mood, but at least you show a good sport spirit. Unlike most of the people who are all "OMGWINTERFEST BE RUINED" an-

Fox News: SANDY IS SAYING THE CURRENT WINTERFEST HAS NO PROBLEM WHAT-

I will kill that Fox one day. As soon as I can find him; it doesn't say anything whatsoever. No, anyways. Yeah, where was I?

Ahem. SOME people will always complain, be drama queens.

"WINTERFEST BE RUINED AND I IN NO WAY ACKNOWLEDGE THE FREE STUFF OOO GAVE US"

"FEST OF WINTERYNESS IS RUINED AND I THINK THAT OOO'S SMALL DEV TEAM CAN QUICKLY PROGRAM"

I don't know about all of you, but I personally kinda liked the Mist system now that I think about it >.< I mean, realistically, you use about 50 Mist energy per KoA (King of Ashes) run, and each KoA takes around 30-45 minutes. Grind it two times, and you are already in 90 minutes (1 hour 30 minutes). Not to mention the fact that you could buy crystal energy with the crowns you earned, and then continue grinding.

It baffles me how Spiral Knights has reached a player base of 1 million players, or something around those lines? Was it that there have been a million accounts made? I forgot exactly what the celebration was of. Either way, if Spiral Knights has gained such a player base, then how come on Steam I see an average of 1.5k to 2k people, online on Spiral Knights? Yes, I do know that the Puzzle Pirates staff has done partnerships with other gaming sites, like Kongerate and Steam, and some other places, and I know that Spiral Knights itself has its own player base, too (people who play spiral knights via the spiral knights homepage and the three rings website), and there's playing Spiral Knights through Facebook as well, but this does not exclude that ingame, there is to be about an average of less than 5k people online in the game? I do not know if this is a fact or not, but I do know that I can almost guarantee you that pick up groups in Spiral Knights, hoping for full parties, is very very scarce to find. So, where are these "1 million players" suppose to bloody be? The game should be overloading with a boom in population!

I don't know what to say to potato-brain here, but thanks for the inciting insults.

I'm not saying OOO is doing a very bad job and should disband or these sort of things, I still think they did a wonderful job.

For all who don't know what Sega's role is, this article might help, with the statement that "Three Rings will continue to operate as a self-contained development studio inside the SEGA family". That is to say OOO is, if not all of the time, does all the development work.

Then yet again, the crew does not consist of any marketing or publishing, so we can assume Sega to take charge there, not to mention gamecyber took charge of it too and publish their own game in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Elevator passes were only $6 a month. Anyway...

- If Sega of America is actually controlling everything Three Rings does then the game could potentially get better if the contract was broken.

- If Sega of America is not controlling everything Three Rings does then except the game to stay the same if the contract was broken.

- Removing the elevator and mist system just allowed players to grind FSC even more.

- Now Three Rings has to find a new way to get money. Limiting Radiance drops to mostly Shadow Lairs at least means someone is spending Crystal Energy to get a Shadow Key. Crystal Energy comes from $$$.

- If they revert Radiance drops back to normal FSC giving the most then they will need to yet again find a new way to get $$$ to keep running.

- Three Rings needs $$$ to run. No matter what they change to "please" the players they will need to devise a new way to make $$$.

I could keep going but I believe I've made enough statements above to give some of the other people a little bit of intelligence about what they are doing with.

Real-life, lack of interest, free TF2 hat. These are some of the first ideas that come to my mind.

Puzzle Pirates and Mr. Daniel.

Three Rings does indeed need money to run. Many of the players fail to understand this. We don't donate money unless we feel like we need to, as in, we need to buy certain said thing from Spiral Knights. Other than that, willingly, there is almost no reason to buy energy just for the heck of things. "We'd all rather grind and work hard than take the easy way to reach our goals". <- Yessss, how do we fight such an ideology? It's hard! .. so, you can't, and so, you must find ways to get them to donate money to the game. We're the reason, US, the PLAYERS, are the reason why there is a Radiant Shard drought. Our lack of support and donations to the Puzzle Pirates crew is the reason that we must suffer!! Three Rings need to find what we want to spend money on for this game, and it should be things that don't irritate us, like cheap reskins and trickery promos.

Where was I? Oh right.

The 1 million players were mostly about 900 thousand who signed up for the free hat, the other 90 thousand veterans who quit playing since they mastered the game.

@Fehzor: How do we know that SEGA and OOO even talk to one another?

They almost certainly have some relation, but we don't know for sure anything about whats going on behind the scenes. Unless someone has legitimate evidence to the contrary, of course.

*Cough*Metal Sonice Stuff*Cough*Tail's Tail*Cough**Something in my throat**No really*

@Wood: Elevator passes were only $6 a month. Anyway...

Alright, they're only $6. But that means you still get 3000 free energy to use, AND unlimited exploration of the Clockworks when most others can't.

- If Sega of America is actually controlling everything Three Rings does then the game could potentially get better if the contract was broken.

If SEGA was not in a little fix here, maybe they would. And if they didn't need a lot more money.

- If Sega of America is not controlling everything Three Rings does then except the game to stay the same if the contract was broken.

Oh hi there reskins. Reskins make the most profit; a good designer/artist could make one in a day. A new weapon with new combat mechanics, on the other hand...

- Removing the elevator and mist system just allowed players to grind FSC even more.

Actually. You can now explore the Clockworks for fun without worrying it's cutting your playtime short. Oh, and the "Jump to Tier 2/3" 400 crown costs are gone too.

- Now Three Rings has to find a new way to get money. Limiting Radiance drops to mostly Shadow Lairs at least means someone is spending Crystal Energy to get a Shadow Key. Crystal Energy comes from $$$.

Except that there's people out there with 6-digit amounts of Energy. Who got it without paying a cent.

- If they revert Radiance drops back to normal FSC giving the most then they will need to yet again find a new way to get $$$ to keep running.

OK, I agree with this point. How did OOO last for so long after the Battle Sprite update anyways?

- Three Rings needs $$$ to run. No matter what they change to "please" the players they will need to devise a new way to make $$$.

Agreed. No matter what they do though, some people will be making threads about how sucky it it. Did you look at the Winterfest hate? "IT BE RUINED" "DESTROYED AFTER 1 YEAR WAIT". Yep.

Radiants, reasoning, and argument

I believe they can be found in any elite depth 28 (tends to be Vanaduke depth). Last time I did an Arcade run, I noticed this, anyway. A friend mentioned that he got them (much more rarely) at d27, but I figured it'd be a [faster?] alternative to Vana... or maybe about the same since arcade-based path would mean you have to go from d19 to Basil, whereas Vana is a set amount of levels.

------

I might have said this before, but lowering the Radiant spawn rate can be an upper-management way of testing to see whether or not Radiant Crystal/end-game heating is an effective way of pushing players to spend money (since the pay-for-playtime system is gone). I used to work for an F2P game company and against designer (...and our whole team's) wishes, we were forced to do something similar: push difficulty in a way that literally made the game pay-to-win. It was an absolutely terrible idea and we lost almost our entire playerbase.

Anyway, money speaks. If people actually buy and use the 700CE to buy the Radiant Crystals in a significant way, then it's a "success" and they'll keep it as is. If not (and say, paying players leave or straight up boycott buying those), then they're likely to push it back up. If your protests can hold out, they'll push the drop rates higher eventually.

I have a friend who has spent at least $50 on SK but he isn't willing to spend money to heat 5* items. 700 CE for a -chance- at a single weapon level is a huge ripoff.

The main differences between SK and that game I worked on is that:
- SK is at least kinder to new players [and their moves show focus on bringing in and keeping new players], whereas the other game stabbed itself in the gut and bled players all over the floor after the first 2-3 stages - literally after an hour or so's worth of playtime.
- SK is fun and at least playable even if you get stuck in that latter-game 4* state. The other game wasn't.

--------
Video games (and as a cruel reminder, especially F2P games) are business and a way for persons to make money. If anyone (OOO, [snickers] players) is to make a powerful argument towards doing something, it needs to be done in terms of money.

"Players are unhappy!" doesn't mean anything. "Our tracking data says that despite lowering the rate of Radiant Crystal spawns, sales of Radiant Crystals are still insignificantly low. Retention of players that have recently crafted a 5* item has dropped" might.

So in other words...

Boycott all spending on OOO until the radiants come back! Use your power as a potential customer to tell them what you want!

Nope.

SEGA will cancel a contract since they're earning no profit, OOO shuts down without larger company support.

Except that there's people out there with 6-digit amounts of Energy. Who got it without paying a cent.
But all the CE comes from paying $$. Maybe you didn't pay, but someone else did.

*laughing* sorry, it reminded me a Real Life situation. People saying they wouldn't buy until prices got lower... and it worked.

eh

I'm not advocating a full boycott.

I'm just saying that if you do spend money, spend it on what you actually want to spend money on, not what you feel "forced" to. That's how players can really 'vote' for things they like.

Money speaks, so if you spend money only on things that make you happy in-game then there's a better chance of those things getting elaborated (= more features in the line that you like). If you spend money on things that you feel 'forced' to, then it's just encouraging those things to stay the same (either they just stop focusing on it as they come up with a new feature) or get worse (things continuing down that same path). Boycotting keeps things neutral. The real kicker that pushes for a 'fix' to something is if it literally causes palpable negative effects unless it's changed.

I'm just making a behavioral guess here, but I bet that while customization is something that people traditionally spent money on, the whole lockbox + energy key thing wasn't a big seller, so OOO came up with 'prize boxes' that don't require keys. People spent money on the themed-armor promos, so we got more themed-armor promos.

erhm...

All OOO problem can be explained in one word:

Consistency

We want constance on news, info, what's going on, balance patch so we don't farm like crazy an event you will make easier 1 week later (Grinchlins and Apocrean fix are laughable at how far away you were from "decent")

If OOO were consistant, none of this would happen, we would've been warned for Radiant, for bugfixes, the game would be better overall with a little communication and CONSISTENCY!!!

1% drop on an imposto kit

Fast forward one year

the item is buyable from SD at 3.5k ce a piece!!!

wtf? seriously? be consistant!

The one thing I would like to see from OOO would be better, more meaningful, bidirectional communication between OOO and us.
I would not care for radiants, acheron, etc if I at least knew what was going on.
The current situation where devs don't speak, and GMs are not allowed to, is just the worst.

my 2 cents

Since this is necro... here are the problem of SK:

No Community MANAGER. Only Patch notes with no content, no joy, no happiness. in-game buff, knight become more powerful with consumables, new guns, sprites and no actual content is added. Only promotional challenges that have little to no reward (reskin items). No actual content but promotional content or reskinned weapons that give no reward to the game. Drop rate are terrible, items drops have been taken out.

THIS IS PATCH NOTES

wow
much content
so beautiful

Lack of communication is the death of all business. Be it consumerism, entertainment, or service... People crave contact. If you start neglecting your partner in the business, they will feel neglected and fail to do business in one way or another - making them seek out other opportunities.

I really am curious why (especially in update notes) there is such a lack of detailed communication compared to other games which I rarely play... cause this game rox and I don't want to see it die!
