Ok im gonna get to the point ASAP
The problem for many recons,gunners and/or guardians is that people spam polaris and/or supernova
Now this is really getting on peoples nerves
It lags lags everyone whos fighting
It causes massive damage in the form of knockback and shock(shock is arguably the best status condition for LD)
So I hope it is nerfed for LD
Anyone who agrees or has any views on this topic?
Polaris Spam
...
tl;dr spam trollaris back at them
Now that the combo has been broken, I suppose I'll just give a proper answer.
Dash
The best way to avoid a polaris is not to dodge the bullets, but to dash straight through them and smacking the spammer in the face with a good sword hit.
Bring your own guns with blackjack and hookers
Polaris has the slowest bullets along with Catalyzers. Therefore, a great counter is to just gun back at them.
Don't lock yourself to one class
If you feel like you're losing to a spamer because your class is disadvantaged, switch class. Any good LD player should get to a point where they can call themselves downright good with at least two classes. Many play Striker and only Striker. If you ask me, that's a bad thing because you won't be able to see the fight in a perspective of a guardian or a recon. Practice at least one of the other two as well. If you play one of the other classes, learn Striker because Striker is OP and Striker kills everything.
So… In your opinion AT is ok but Polaris is not? What a noob.
I think Clytiusm has a fair position, though. In the very post that they claim they're not ok with Polaris, they also claim to have a constant 1 bar. Polaris with latency is kind of awful because you can never be sure of exactly where the bullets are actually located and it's not like it's easy to beat people, AT or no AT, with that connection.
ok, first step: learn Polaris' distance. If you're using recon or guard, it's about twice the radius of your shield. If you're a 5* mist bomber, it's like one tIle past the diameter of the bomb (so you'll want an off point bomb to wall them away from your teammates to keep them out of range).
Now, Polaris currently has slow bullets, meaning it's terrible for chasing people, but at the same time, shines as a defensive gun (that is, it's good when you're kiting people).
The key to fighting Polaris then becomes a matter of staying out of its range (just watch where the shot starts from) then shooting (and hitting/interrupting) with a faster gun (ex: AP/Sent/valiance) when they move forward to try to hit you.
If you're recon, don't cloak to run away from it since it makes you move slower. Save cloak for offense at that point.
Now, this is mainly to help against dumb people who think it's a good gun and try to use it offensively. If you're up against someone using it defensively, then it's harder to deal with and no amount of cookie cutter tip will help because you're up against a more intelligent player, but if you're playing properly, they won't always be in that situation.
If you're comfortable with your handle over latency, you can step into/behind a Polaris bullet after it passes you. this is mostly if you're already in the 4 tile range but you can pull it off on large bullets too.
In my experience as a one bar player, dodging polaris can be rough, gritty and ugly; but easy enough if you get the hang of it.
My tip for one bar players:
When dodging polaris bullets, never make the fatal mistake of backing away. The bullets may seem slow and unexpanded on your screen but they could very well be the opposite on the server side.
Instead, move forward, towards the hell-bringer, to attack. Now remember, polaris spammers show no mercy so why should you? Proceed to combo their face in with a DA or GF.
Edit: Just saw Seiran's post. Another completely viable counter. All in all it depends on which playstyle you prefer.
Vali is life. Spray Vali everywhere and lives will be lost.
<3
Callahan has a fast bullet (and good range) that should allow you to carefully snipe at them, once they are stunned go for the kill or let your strikers do your dirty work.
@Particled:

This can work (and for melee players is essentially how you have to eventually get to them), but assume you're playing against a striker with Polaris. What happens when they see you start walking towards them? They'll boost back and now you're in their field of strength (kiting you).
When I play melee recon I sometimes do a bait movement like:
- visibly show that I'm running away
- cloak and then change directions towards/around them
- if they try to move forward to "chase" where I'm "running away to", it actually closes distance and allows me to use melee hits on them.
Of course, this opens a whole game of mixups (you don't have to run directlyall) but that's the basis for any smart recon.
With Guardian, you can do the same kind of bait and reverse-to-close-gap movement, but of course, you're visible the entire time so you might just have to dash if you see them start to take steps towards you. Use mouse movement to vary your angle of dash to your control and you can place yourself to be able to sidestep smaller bullets after your dash.

@Holy-Nightmare:

nope
Polaris has about an 8-9 tile range in front of you. Callahan has a 7-8 tile range (whatever reference you use, it's 1 tile less than Polaris) and even though the bullet itself might be quick, the entire attack makes you stand still for longer than you would if you were shield cancelling a toothpick. However, for charge shot, Callahan charges do indeed outrange Polaris by 1 tile (so you can totally do from-the-bottom snipes on Polaris kiddies).
Valiance/AP/Sent/Carbine all have more range than Callahan and give you mobility to at least start moving towards safety while attacking.
Don't trick people into bad choices, please.
----
A gunning trick I learned against patterned strikers: If you watch the rhythm of their shots (since most strikers cannot doubleswitch, they rely on shoot-pause), they can only dash so many tiles before they shoot again. For example:
Shoot > Boost (for about 3 tiles distance) > Repeat
That kind of pattern is something you can catch on to then predict. Instead of trying to shoot where they are when they shoot, you can shoot ahead of them and catch them before they begin their next attack.
Though again, that kind of thing is like, supposed to be a basic building block of prediction skill in this game. >_>
Yeah, I should have made the distinction between charge and regular attacks.
Arguments like these can mean the entire LD community can be summed up with this trope.
The cherry on top (and would represent me the most in all o' this) is the neutral side of Direct Playstyle Conflict.
"You're both making multiplayer completely inaccessible. You're either inescapable or laughable, and neither is very fun to play with, so... Screw This, I'm Outta Here!"
Also mainly the reason I run arcade instead of playing PvP.
I'm going to be serious now.
When I have Valiance:
-Dash around as a striker and spray bullets in two's as often as you can.
When I have Antigua:
-Walk with no dash and shoot at the spammer.
When I have no guns:
-Dash in and combo.
When you're in melee range of a polaris user, they usually do one of two things: They pull out their swords to engage you in a fight (in which case you've succeeded in ending their polaris spam) or like you said- continue to kite you with polaris.
In my scenario, if the pola user does the latter I continue trying to get on the offensive; making sure I'm able to position myself to strike them. This part is usually done with variable success depending on the skill of attacker.
The main point of my post was to advise the one bar players, namely OP, to always try to stick close to the spammer and dodge by moving towards them. Also to note, I was assuming the class of choice was striker. Recon and guardian classes may not work so well with this strategy.
@Moonstone-Shades:
aaaaand he comes out of left field, runs across, dances to draw attention to himself, then runs off the field
1) There wasn't an argument?
2) Direct Playstyle Conflict wasn't anywhere NEAR the topic in the first place. The closest thing (especially when related to things like Polaris/AT) is probably the cheap/boring tactics category.
A lot of people will argue that Polaris spam is cheap or difficult to beat, but I'm all for finding and spreading counters to those things, cause that's the kind of thing that I find interesting.
@Particled:
Ah, yeah, strikers can totally dance through a single user polaris spam, but from the OP:
The problem for many recons,gunners and/or guardians is that people spam polaris and/or supernova
It doesn't make sense for striker gunners to have problems with Polaris spam, so I kind of ignored that, but I'm mainly more concerned with the lesser-played (and generally lesser-experienced group) that play recon/guard, cause I'm all about helping the hipster playstyles develop (hi recon guns :d)
Also, idk where the 1 bar assumption came from. I saw Krakob say this:
I think Clytiusm has a fair position, though. In the very post that they claim they're not ok with Polaris, they also claim to have a constant 1 bar.
but unless there's another post/thread, I haven't seen it.
"aaaaand he comes out of left field, runs across, dances to draw attention to himself, then runs off the field"
I wasn't even trying to get attention; I was trying to prove a point. But sure, controversy and vitriol are what everyone wants.
"There wasn't an argument?"
Oh, I'm sorry, did I rain on your ego? I'm always down to ruin someone's day.
"Direct Playstyle Conflict wasn't anywhere NEAR the topic in the first place. The closest thing (especially when related to things like Polaris/AT) is probably the cheap/boring tactics category."
And for that, I have this quote for you: "They're Scrappy Mechanics that overcentralize gameplay around defending against one thing. It's generally poor taste to use them. Also they're just plain dull to watch." This is why I grin with glee every time I see something like Winmillion being used in LD. Or somebody going weaponless. And on the topic of Polaris spam, sure, run right into it. Keep in mind everyone isn't Bill Gates and doesn't have shockwalking UVs.
"A lot of people will argue that Polaris spam is cheap or difficult to beat, but I'm all for finding and spreading counters to those things, cause that's the kind of thing that I find interesting."
Unfortunately, most of them involve tactics that can easily fail. The ones that don't, usually involve UVs. Let me bring you back to this statement:
"everyone isn't Bill Gates and doesn't have shockwalking UVs"
And why is Lockdown so important, anyway? Wasn't the main focus on Arcade? The Direct Playstyle Conflict is applicable, but considering you're all making this inaccessible for quite a fraction of the playerbase (including me) with your bickering and disagreement, and every time I see these kind of threads, I get a bigger urge to ask Three Rings to delete this subforum.
And while I'm at it:
"but unless there's another post/thread, I haven't seen it."
OP only has one bar.
Ah...my bad. I confused the details of this thread with another post made by OP on the same topic. Sorry.
I'm still failing to see the relevance of shades' posts here, but k, I'll play.
Just to clarify, this is what "There is no argument?" is referring to:
"Arguments like these can mean the entire LD community can be summed up with this trope."
Arguments like... what?
There was no argument going on. Aside from the spam, the rest of the posts were talking over tips to get over pulsars.
"Oh, I'm sorry, did I rain on your ego? I'm always down to ruin someone's day."
..?
If anything, you're the one who's traipsing around looking for a fight. Over what? Your dislike for PVP? I can only guess.
"Unfortunately, most of them involve tactics that can easily fail. The ones that don't, usually involve UVs. "
Irrelevant premise. No amount of UV will defend you against Supernova's (see thread topic) nonexistent status effect.
You don't need to spend that much time to figure pulsars out, you just need to know what you're fighting. At that point it's as easy as fighting a t3 turret...kat...wolver. You don't need to be a basement dweller, but it's a little more effort than holding shield.

People have way more passion (turn it into love or hate) for PVP game types, almost mainly because they have to deal with other players with more emotion than they would if just playing co-op vs AI. That's just how it is.
Aside from the handicap meaning, accessibility is a term often misused to describe how easy it is to get into a game (ex: learning curve), so I fail to see how your interactions here make the game more/less accessible. These forums don't really have any bearing in-game. Just see any movement that's been started here ("ban AT", "use recon/guard more!") - none of them work because the forum population just doesn't represent the majority of players in-game, not even in Lockdown.
It's too bad, because it also means that these tips won't get to the players who need them, lol.
"I'm still failing to see the relevance of shades' posts here, but k, I'll play."
...I don't need relevance.
"Irrelevant premise. No amount of UV will defend you against Supernova's (see thread topic) nonexistent status effect."
WOW. LIKE ANYONE WOULD TOTALLY KNOW THAT. /sarcasm
"People have way more passion (turn it into love or hate) for PVP game types, almost mainly because they have to deal with other players with more emotion than they would if just playing co-op vs AI. That's just how it is."
Well, people need to stop caring about a stupid minigame.
"Pulsar lines aren't a problem unless they're coordinated well with multiple people (which is why the Jempire became so notorious for it). In the most general case (RLD), it's not an issue because frankly, you'd be hard-pressed to find teamwork there. So for the general case, I hope people can learn to play against pulsars, just as me and my friends have."
Well, you've ruined my misconception that teamwork exists in LD, but that doesn't really give me any more reason to stop hating on the Pulsar line. It's gimmicky, (almost) useless and actually hurts your team more than it helps.
"Arguments like... what?"
"Pulsar should be banned! It's causing me too much lag!" "No, you suck!" *insert vulgarities here* "AT should banned!" "DO NOT WANT." *cue flamewar.*
"you just need to know what you're fighting"
You must be a fan of The Art Of War.
"If anything, you're the one who's traipsing around looking for a fight. Over what? Your dislike for PVP? I can only guess."
You did get my hatred for LD correct, but I don't hate all PvP modes with a burning hatred. I will actually play some TF2 and Pokemon (even better, I actually like Pokemon compared to my love-to-hate "relationship" with Spiral Knights). Besides, it's pretty much Godwin's Law that a flame war will start in this subforum.
"These forums don't really have any bearing in-game. Just see any movement that's been started here ("ban AT", "use recon/guard more!") - none of them work because the forum population just doesn't represent the majority of players in-game, not even in Lockdown."
Then why do they exist?
"Just see any movement that's been started here ("ban AT", "use recon/guard more!") - none of them work because the forum population just doesn't represent the majority of players in-game, not even in Lockdown."
Just do a good old Shadow Key protest. Crowd in one spot, lag up all the havens and OOO might listen!
"It's too bad, because it also means that these tips won't get to the players who need them, lol."
That "lol" just ruined everything you said, as that means you aren't being serious.
"There was no argument going on. Aside from the spam, the rest of the posts were talking over tips to get over pulsars."
I didn't read the full thread, excuse me, let me take time out of my busy schedule to do that. Not.
"accessibility is a term often misused to describe how easy it is to get into a game (ex: learning curve), so I fail to see how your interactions here make the game more/less accessible."
Oh, so what term do you want me to use, master? /sarcasm
Really, I find it impossible for me to enjoy LD thanks to people like you.
"You must be a fan of The Art Of War."
I am.
It's pleasantly applicable to PVP games and trolling in general. /thumbsup
@forums
Then why do they exist?
For the few who are engaged enough in the community to want to be able to take part without logging on. Generally, and as is the case here, forum population is a minority of the players.
As far as this subforum goes, General Discussion had many threads on BN/LD before, so it was decided that this was necessary.
@lol
That "lol" just ruined everything you said, as that means you aren't being serious.
I really am not. I just found it curious to see such random vitriol in the middle of what turned into a tips thread. Which leads me to the next thing..
@hate

In-game, the angriest and hateful people I've found were the people who keep treating LD like a minigame/wall that they just "ugh have to do this to get this stupid recipe". It's really weird. I mean, it's too bad they didn't find it to their enjoyment, but they contribute to their own misery by acting as troll bait. I've had teammates target those people because they're so loud and obnoxious about their hate (ex: "wow, that guy's really annoying, tell me if you where he is, haha"), which in turn makes their experience worse.
@accessibility
Your use of it doesn't make sense even with the misuse, so I really have no idea what you're trying to say other than the fact that you have heavy bias against this community, regardless of how different it might be in reality.
@"Arguments"
I didn't read the full thread, excuse me, let me take time out of my busy schedule to do that. Not.
...and that's exactly why your posts seemed so random and irrelevant to the rest of the thread. :|
I'll leave it at that then.
@lol

Oh, I'm totally sorry for being a drama king. /sarcasm

Okay then, I see your point.

@accessibility
"Your use of it doesn't make sense even with the misuse, so I really have no idea what you're trying to say other than the fact that you have heavy bias against this community, regardless of how different it might be in reality."
Then what would be the proper term?
@hate
"In-game, the angriest and hateful people I've found were the people who keep treating LD like a minigame/wall that they just "ugh have to do this to get this stupid recipe". It's really weird. I mean, it's too bad they didn't find it to their enjoyment, but they contribute to their own misery by acting as troll bait."
Oh boy. This statement is full of stupidity.
I can ignore the other statements, but this. You clearly have no idea what can happen if you take trolling too far.
"In-game, the angriest and hateful people I've found were the people who keep treating LD like a minigame/wall that they just 'ugh have to do this to get this stupid recipe'"
This must be a metaphor against me, and I take grand offense to that.
"It's really weird. I mean, it's too bad they didn't find it to their enjoyment, but they contribute to their own misery by acting as troll bait."
Unfortunately, taking trolling too far will result in one of three things:
1) The victim commits suicide, causing the trolls to be most likely arrested and sent to prison.
2) A cycle of revenge is formed and tears everything apart.
3) The victim will bite back using the authorities.
Keeping this going will result in one of these happening. I'd recommend you stop this immediately, and I shall stop now. It's up to you if you'd like to keep this going and end up most likely going over the edge.
Adding this:
"I've had teammates target those people because they're so loud and obnoxious about their hate (ex: "wow, that guy's really annoying, tell me if you where he is, haha"), which in turn makes their experience worse."
Unfortunately, the only "good" solution is to use the /ignore command and simply not listen to them anymore.
You're reading too much into it.
It's exactly as I said. Purely anecdotal. I don't want to fish for screenshot examples but again, it's what I've actually seen in game.
The most miserable ones in LD are the ones who don't want to be there (fair enough), but when they're loud about it, it attracts bad attention and often makes things worse.
Now, if you want a forum example, Phantomhamachi did exactly that, except he'd come out of nowhere addressing bullies that AFAIK weren't even on the forums, and of course, that attracted sharks too.
"Now, if you want a forum example, Phantomhamachi did exactly that, except he'd come out of nowhere addressing bullies that AFAIK weren't even on the forums, and of course, that attracted sharks too."
Phantomhamachi = me.
It's hard. Being a teenager and growing up. It's hard and nobody understands.
"You're reading too much into it."
What do you mean by this?
"It's exactly as I said. Purely anecdotal. I don't want to fish for screenshot examples but again, it's what I've actually seen in game."
Unfortunately it's happened to me.
Now can we please rerail this topic?
"= me."

hi
------
So yes,
Fight slow ranged weapons with faster ranged weapons.
Valiance/AP/Sentenza/Carbine are good to fight pulsars.
If you chase, you're disadvantaged, if you kite, you have the advantage over them.
/thumbsup
Choose another route. It could work if you're Recon as it catches them off guard somewhat. It might not work with Striker or Guardian, but that all depends on the Polaris user.
Dodge
