I have a little predicament. I have 16 shells right now, and i would like the 4* of the torto gun or shield. I have a 3* gun, and I am not a huge fan, and I like the look of the shield (yes I know they are essentially the same as other shields), but I don't want to waste my shells. replies are appreciated, and sorry if this has already been done, but I didn't see one like this

Both are excellent choices as

Both are excellent choices as both bring in new playstyles.

The gun charge is good against slow enemies and the regular attack is good for moving enemies around (into the incoming charge spikes).

The shields are entirely new, the defense stats may be the same but the statuses are extremely different with at least one different status per shield they become much more useable. For example the Savage tortoise for example is a much more useable piercing shield than its jelly counterpart. The Grand tortoise however is extremely similar (in almost everything, I can't make definite comments but the stat bars match up extremely well) to the Ancient plate shield.

If you can only make a 4* item, then the guns would be a better idea. Shields do not benefit much from heat and as such the 5* ones will always be better than the 4* version due to the increased health.

However the guns, being a weapon, can perform at 4* as well as 5*. If you have shinings to heat it, a 4* tortogun will probably serve you better than a radiant-starved 5* version anyhow.

Basically, I'd say get the gun as it would not be as crippled by only being 4* compared to the shields.

thanks

Thank you both of you for posting the replies, i guess i'll make the 4* gun, and make a 3* thing and sell it on the AH, but i forgot to mention that I am working on 4* clearence, and it would help to get a 4* shield without a recipe (i'll purchase ancient plate shield for 5* clearance and then sell it), I already have a 4* sword, and I am using the plate shield, which I now see was a horrible mistake. Also, i ran around with the gun, and realized how much I hate it. I guess shield it is.

Ancient plate shield isn't a horrible mistake. Against tortodrones/trojans it's the best shield you can have. VS everything except status-less slimes/wolvers it's better than Aegis, cheaper too. It will perform better than a 4* shield except against statuses. May I ask which shield you are getting?

Actually the Volcanic plate

Actually the Volcanic plate shield is the best in the game for tanking Vana Mace swings, even an Omegaward/Owlite (with Med Elemental resist) barely survives a hit. Keep it and take it to Volcanic plate shield as it outclasses Ironmight with it's fire resist (one status more than ironmight).

The gun isn't for heavy controlled damage (get alchemers for that) it's for fun gameplay with splash of randomness. Still you have to spam charges like mad with it and use the regular attack's pushing effect to better position the victims. More thought and risk than other gun's point and shoot mentality.

The most significant difference between those shield is stun resistance, and vana mace beside fire also has stun... so uhm sure.

Actually, this statement is false.
I made a suggestion on the topic.
4* shields have the same HP as 5* shields.
You can trust me, as I've tested it. (Exact data shown here noting the sinister skelly shield matching D20 and D24 hp values to the 5* shields.)

@skeptic
That's... news to me. I thought that the bigger bar meant more health. TheMoreYouKnow.jpg

@Holy-nightmare
When talking about shields that can survive vanaduke maces slams don't forget about omega shell.

@OP
Only just realised you said plate shield not ancient plate shield... Make yourself a volcanic plate shield. It was the first 5* shield I made, and I still use it to this day if I'm not using swiftstrike or omega shell.
