Split Damage on Monster Attacks -- How do we tell how much is what type?

I know that all projectile attacks are pure typed (thrown weapon, turrets, etc).
What about short range weapons?

If a Gorgo bites me, how much damage is Shadow and how much is Normal?

The health pips that fall off are mostly purple with some red. Does that reflect the percentage of the split damage?
How can we tell?

Thanks!

Not sure if the pips are accurate representation (although I don't see why they wouldn't be).
You could probably find out by comparing how much damage you take with no normal/shadow defense (say, dragon scale) then something with shadow but no normal (divine, radiant silvermail) and normal but no shadow.

Roughly the percentage of pips that fall off in one color is equal to the percentage of damage of that type. Sometimes the bars can hide behind others, so this is not always a definite approach.

As for exact percentages...
I was working on it here.
Then I realized how little we knew with the type of precision I like and decided to go for something easier: weapon damage.
Then Zeddy got involved with figuring out the numbers prior to rounding recently.

We are close to getting weapons and monster armor done. It should be a short step to monster damage and knight armor after that.

However, if you want exact methods for how to find it out yourself... First get familiar with the wiki page on the topic.

1. Use the methods in the first link to identify unarmored damage (you will need one pure, and the split you wish to test).
2. Use methods in the 3rd/4th link to determine the armor value of any armor vs the pure damage.
3. Use methods in the first link again to compare armor against the split damage.
4. Repeat #2 and #3 with more armor until you understand how it works and tell us.
5. Tell us.

Some interesting items to take note to:
Difficulty mode may impact low armor values.
Difficulty mode may impact percentage of split damage.
Isolate a single depth to do all the analysis.
Don't test on stratum 1.
Avoid using datapoints that would include "lethal" damage.
Avoid feeding gorgos too much. They may change their primary diet to knights.

Hexzyle has a topic somewhere in wiki editor where he did research on monster damage. Bullets were found to not actually be entirely pure special damage, but approached being more so the closer you get to depth 30.

This might have changed in elite mode, I believe his research was prior to that.

We can at least tell that the normal portion will decrease as depth increases, so it won't be trivial to come up with an answer to your question.
