Count me as another player

Count me as another player who suddenly couldn't log in using a WRT54G v6 but fixed it by flashing the DD-WRT firmware. Went through the process yesterday. It was a pain reading all the documentation, but the actual process was fairly straight forward. If you have a version 6 like mine, this is the meat of the process:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT54G_v5.0_%26_5.1_%26_6.0

"Bad things only a Time Lord can fix could happen."

Uninstalling/reinstalling the game could probably fix whatever you break by messing with the files, but I would totally not try it.

Just a note for everyone:

Just a note for everyone: Worldcrafter linked to the firmware for the WRT54G version 5. That firmware will only work on a WRT54G version 5, if you have a version 6 or a WRT54G2 you will need different firmware available on the DD-WRT website.

WRT54G v5 user here.
I can't login with router connected, of course.
Changing to DD-WRT is not really a viable option for me personally.
Many v5s have less RAM and only DD-WRT Micro can be installed on them, generally.
If you DO install it, many of these v5 router will freeze up rather often under load.
I've been down that road, it's still true today, and I don't want to do it again.

Also, re: Providence, that link seems to clearly say it's for v5, v5.1, and v6...

Right, but it's still only

Right, but it's still only for the 54G. 54G2 users need to get the proper version.

DD-WRT may add more life to your router as it is a more recent firmware than what you are likely to have, but you should only do it if you understand the risks involved.
Again, I'm sorry we couldn't find another solution, but the Linksys firmware just doesn't work right. Please hang in there, the devs are trying to fix this but it might take a while.

I do understand that DD-WRT

I do understand that DD-WRT will fix the issue, but...
WRT54G v5 and v6 users should understand that those routers have very limited RAM.
With DD-WRT, which uses more RAM than official firmware...
They are likely to experience freezes under heavy stress.
I really wish there were a better solution for those users but I guess there isn't...

Yes, the Steam version of the game is having issues.
Some of the problem might be Steam's Java version, or some other issue with the way the game is installed, but hang in there.
All new things have some kinks to work out, but the devs are working hard to get everyone back online.

I also can't login, though

I also can't login, though June 3rd I could fine. Prior to then I've never had any trouble. I'm using the web-launched client. I've tried deleting %APPDATA%\spiral and making sure Java is updated. My router is a Linksys WRT54G v6 with the latest official firmware and this machine which I run Spiral Knights from is on a DMZ and static LAN IP. This is a pretty weird problem. I pray you fix it quickly. I really wanted to pick up the spare mist tank for the Steam launch, and play with my Steam friends. I always get "Loggin in" followed by "You have been disconnected from the server".

I just wanted to add two things. First, I can login fine if I take the router out of the equation. Second, the last time I logged on before today was actually June 3rd, not last week like I initially said. I was ill all last week, so I actually never made it on then.

@Saralene

After v3, the WRT54G became 'neutered' meaning they have 8 MB of RAM compared to 16 MB of the pre-v4 versions. But I have personally flashed my v6, and after tweaking the settings a little, it works far better than any Linksys firmware. If you want to know what settings I'm talking about, I'd be more than happy to tell you.

seriously providence.

i cant seriously believe that your going to sit there and tell me my WRT54G router is the problem here because it cant and i quote "KEEP UP" which is laughable as i can download filed off STEAM DIRECT2DRIVE and FILEPLANET as well as most other places at 3MB/s and up so OUR router is not the problem here at all it is your PATCH that is the problem but companies just have a hard time admitting that they are wrong my Router runs EVERY OTHER GAME just perfectly fine and your game is in no way bigger or uses more resources than say WOW or RIFT or CRYSIS 2 so get off your high horse and adress the problem better than you need to get a new router thats BS in my book and i am sure anyone else who could play this game fine until now will agree tell the PROGRAMMING NERDS to get to work and fix what they broke the solution should not be us spending money that we need not spend the issue is not ours it is yours totally yours and i think u should all own up to it.

Adding my two cents in here

Adding my two cents in here in that I *just* logged off, realized I forgot to do something and went to log back on. No dice. I get the same "failed to connect to server" as the last few posters above me. I didn't see any notice of downtime or servers rebooting, I've checked my internet connection and it's all good.

As an aside...the forums are loading veeeeery slow for me right now. That's never happened before. Maybe we're looking at a server-wide issue at the home base?

I beg too differ good sir

Sorry but I still can't log in without hooking up to my modem still. Not cool bro! Sorry but you won't be seeing another penny from me until you get the router problem fixed. As a paying customer I don't appreciate the length of time this is taking. along with not responding to my emails I sent a week ago. This is becoming a joke I am about ready to call them and demand that I get my money back. I can go get a new router but I need the internet for my college summer classes for another 2 weeks. I don't want to take any chances.

I hope we get some kind of CE apology from 3rings because it's already been a week. Man $70 could buy me a new book for one of my classes in the fall and it looks like it will be going into a new router.

But...the purchase of CE (and

But...the purchase of CE (and even of the starter pack, I think) is an optional purchase for those who wish to insure they can extend their raiding adventures a little longer. I can understand frustration if you had just recently bought some or regularly buy some, but the way you're phrasing things makes you sound like you've got some kind of sense of entitlement or like Three Rings is making us by Crystal Energy as a requirement to play, which isn't the case. The tech crew is working on it. Chances are your energy will still be there when it's finally fixed. We can hope that maybe they'll toss in some kind of "apology bonus" or whatever, but to be honest I'm not expecting it. They didn't expect or plan for this problem to happen just like we didn't, but they ARE working on trying to fix it. That's better than some other game companies who would probably just wash their hands and say, "Well, it's a router problem, not ours. Case closed."

As far as the e-mails go, they take a little time. I e-mailed them...last week? And they responded at least within a day or two with what I needed. And like others have said, there are alternatives. If you can plug directly into your modem, the game works fine. If you can maybe get to a place with WiFi--say, a Starbucks or something--the game should run alright. (I haven't tested that yet, but that's my working theory.) It's just a matter of having patience and maybe another game to focus on for a little while.

Yeah, I got the same router. (WRT54G v8.)

Funny thing, I disconnected the ethernet cable from my router and plugged it in my lap top. The internet connection works fine and I was able to get connected then I unplugged the cable and connected it back to the router. I tired to connect to the serever again, and to my surprise I managed to log in. "I bet I won't be able to connect again once i log out or something." and I couldn't connect again.

Uh, I dont think I want to try that DD-WRT thing. If I screw up, then I cant use the router at all? I had the router for a couple of years now. I remeber playing SK fine untill that update. It was in the morning and it said it would update. SO I log off then later try to connect several times and I couldnt. (Im not gonna waste my money on another router just so I can play this game. Can't they revert the update or something? It was working fine before. Leave it like that? (yeah, ill go message the support guys...)

@Bobcatz - Patches aren't

@Bobcatz - Patches aren't some magical thing that will fix any problem. You can't make them unless you understand whats wrong, and bug in VxWorks for the WRT54 routers doesn't even make sense in the first place.

Both SK and Xbox live require a large MTU in order to communicate. That in itself isn't odd since authentication protocols don't like it when its data is messed wtih mid-flight, and MTU is the threshold that controls when packets need to be broken apart in order to be sent. What IS odd is that VxWorks can't handle this traffic when the MTU is set to the max allowed (1500) but functions correctly when its set to anything lower then that.

It could be worked around by making adjustments to the authentication methods, but without more info on what they are using to communicate with Steam, theres no telling how much headroom there is to play with. This will eventually get worked out since Cisco has been useless on the matter.

Cisco is considered a lost cause at this point since WRT54s will eventually hit end of product life, and they can use that opportunity to start forcing N router adoption.

And now it seems unfixed

And now it seems unfixed (broken) again? Just thought I'd mention I don't play that often, but I'm once again experiencing this issue, though there was that time around the 4th when it was resolved.

Also I tried the max transfer unit workaround and it seems to work great, so kudos for discovering that. Toying around with it, I discovered that an MTU of 1489 lets me login to the game, but a setting of 1490 does not. It's worth noting that my normal MTU is 1500, not 1492, so I had to cut 11 bytes. 11 bytes is a really weird number, and I can only assume somewhere the login packet is being misshapen to add that.
