Are Prototype weapons still effective later on in the game?

I don't want to bother with the weapon choices because of how cool the Proto-Sword, Shield, and Gun look like.

No.

The star-level of the item showcases how well it will bide later in the game. A zero-star item will not continue to be a good weapon past the terminal in the arcade of tier 1 (aka, only good in Stratum 1).

If you want a similar weapon, look into the brandish or calibur lines. They both go to 5-star (final star level) and have the same basic attack patterns.

You can still use your proto armor and helmet as costumes, but we have no costume weapons or shields as of right now.

This is quite a silly question.

Pretty much every action game has the rule that starting weapons are the worst weapon. Online games follow this rule, ten-fold in fact.
Er, not to mention that the Proto weapons aren't even that pretty to look at compared to the rest. Check out Leviathan Blade, Torto Fists, Grey Owlite Shield, and so forth.
The appearance doesn't mean the weapon is good or not, it just means you're a video game hipster and/or one of the people who spend too much real game money on -Virtual Style!-™©.
Haters gonna hait.

Fangel referenced the data:
0* weapons are effective until the end of stratum 1
1* weapons are effective until the end of stratum 2
2* weapons are effective until the end of stratum 3
3* weapons are effective until the end of stratum 4
4*+5* weapons are effective until the end of stratum 6

I still think its a bug that needs to be fixed for 4* in S6...

@Sir-Henry-Cooldown

Chilling duelist is worse than proto, which interestingly is hidden behind an ingame purchase.

I beg to disagree.

I beg to disagree. ^

Sometimes the best weapons are so modest there is nothing left to describe them.
See Nitronome, which apart from it's huge shaft of light (ha ha I said shaft), it looks practically the same as the rest of it's younger siblings in the blast bomb line. Heater Shield?

In fact... I think I remember someone wanting the 5* reskins of proto weapons just like the recruits have in the new vanguard mission "breaking in the recruits". Imagine having a levi blade that looks like a proto sword. Instant fun!

Also there's a lack of green weapons that are easy to get. (see green tortogun, plague needle, biohazard, venom veiler [because not many people bomb, let alone get the poison one])

There should be an option to Reskin weapons as a lower star version of themselves, i.e., reskin a Triglav to look like a Jalovec.
The 5 star versions of a lot of swords are way too flashy and ugly, take for instance the klutzy looking 5 star Brandish and Calibur lines compared to their clean, balanced, 4 star versions.

I've seen the other weapons

I've seen the other weapons now and I still like the proto-weapons better. You can get lost in the design so easily.
I don't know how long i'll last but i'll play the game with them for as long as molasses moves.

I'm telling you guys. The shade of green the gun has is unique.

Any weapon is effective against anything. It just depends on how much time you want to take killing it.

I know it to be true Faeyd,

I know it to be true Faeyd, but When it comes down to 5-star level dungeons later on in my Spiral Knights Career, I don't want to take 3 hours to defeat one enemy.
It would be acceptable if it took like 15 seconds per monster.

Well if it makes you feel any better...

If it helps, the elemental blaster (3*) looks like a darker green version of the proto gun. So if it's design and a color thing, there's something to look into (plus the elemental blaster line is pretty good to use in general).

Thanks for the reference

Thanks for the reference Fangel.
I suppose the Elemental Blaster line does have the shade of Turquoise I kind of wanted in a weapon when I first started the game.

I also did think about how I was supposed to go around with others if I just use Sub-Optimal equipment. I guess if it's solo play, I'll go with my trusty Proto-Gun, and if in a group (To kill things faster and not inconvenience them) I'll use an Elemental Blaster.
