I've noticed that since the localization of loot patch, you never see Vitapods with a number lower than your current Vitapod.
Picking up a larger number also hides (destroys?) your currently held Vitapod.

So if you don't pick up a Vitapod when it drops, does this cause you to have less loot overall as Vitapods are still on the drop table for boxes?
Or does it make no difference? (In the case of Vitapods dropping alongside other things, or perhaps even if you already have a Vitapod, a box you open that would have had a Vitapod simply opens empty?)

I've also wondered this.

I've also wondered this. The difference in loot might be pretty small. Hence we would need a lot of data to show that such a difference exists.

I know it isn't much data [and horribly sorted]...
But this data for killing lichens at various sizes was taken with all HUD spots empty (no vita/pickups of any kind). I didn't take enough data to even get 1 vitapod [in a total of 20 kills]. I suspect that the drops are additive for lichens when they combine, so the data would represent an estimated equivalent of 49 drops.

That being said, in the entire time of this thread, I lumped vitapods in the "item" category [along with vials and such]. Items constituted of about 36% of green boxes grabbing vitapods as soon as they appeared (from either monsters or boxes).

There have been no boxes that were empty. There was 1 that contained two items, and was not included with the dataset [despite being recorded up until that box].

---Raven Hypothesis below---
I suspect that the way treasure box drops function are that it rolls twice for the "base" drop and 1-9 times for the rarity [based on first roll].
The base drop would pick one of {crowns, heat, token, material, item, gear}. The second roll would be {# of crns, # of heat, type of token, type of material, type of item, type of gear}. My prediction would be that when you have a current vitapod, it would reroll either both rolls or just the second roll. I suspect it only rerolls the second roll.

As far as boxes are

As far as boxes are concerned: you get a primary roll which determines what type of item is in them, e.g. for health boxes it can either be hearts, pills or vitas. If you roll something invalid, then the game consults a fallback table for what you should get instead. The primary type is not rerolled, though (since that might result in an infinite loop under the right/wrong circumstances). In case of vitas, the fallback solution is another health item (hearts or pills), but not additional loot.

Passing on a pod has no influence on your payout.

Disclaimer: this is of course (as always) completely made up and you shouldn't believe a word of it. I only post this to annoy Fehzor and Scepticraven.
