As you go through the level you may find prize boxes with nothing but heat and CR in them (this makes the level and battles more difficult) and I can understand why you did that.

Once you beat the mission however you have a prize room in which you have numerous boxes. As a player I feel it is a bit of a slap on the face to find things like Vitapods and HP capsules as well as other pickups when I should be getting as big a reward as possible (or at least one that is the maximum output for the number of boxes presented) considering I just went through one of the toughest, cheapest, and laggiest battles in the game.

What is the point of boxes dropping things that I will never use?

Well...

That might be a side-effect of the boxes dropping fire crystals. Personally I'd rather have the ability to have fire crystals but also get consumables than have no chance of fire crystals and no chance of consumables.

According to the Wiki

http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Treasure_box

"Green Treasure Boxes contain heat, crowns, a pickup, or a vitapod when the boxes are broken. Sometimes, a treasure box may contain a crafting material or a treasure box token, or even more rarely, a piece of equipment. Occasionally, the box will contain a bonus rarity drop in addition to the regular drop.

Red Treasure Boxes can only contain heat, crowns, or a treasure box token. Occasionally, the box will contain a bonus rarity drop in addition to the regular drop. "

Basically the Red ones are better because they drop Heat CR tokens and rarities, Green ones often end up useless at the end of this mission because there is no point in collecting Pickups or Vitapods (which can be all that is contained in a green box) and while they do have a chance at dropping the same stuff as red boxes there is a lower chance to get it due to competition to other drops.

From what I remember, rarities are given on top of what's inside a box. You could get a vitapod and 3 radiants from a green box, and crowns plus 3 radiants from a red one. Obviously the second one is more useful in the last bit, but it seems like the boxes in the other levels in the mission only drop crowns and heat, not even dropping rarities or consumables.

Thus, to get rarities to drop, we need to make sure that consumables are dropping too. I'd reckon the core doesn't have it's own drop tables like the clockworks do, however the sanctuary area shares the same drop tables.

@Fangel

It is because green boxes are there. The same thing happens on the final depth of danger prestige missions.

@Holy-Nightmare

I haven't played that mission enough to analyze the boxes before the final depth. It is possible that they have been give then red box contents despite appearing green (as pretty much everything else in the core has changed its model). I've run a datalog of treasure boxes over in this thread.
