So I got my Steam controller today and the first game I tried it with is SK. Anyone else using one?

SK doesn't seem to recognize it as a controller but that's ok since it's supposed to mimic a keyboard and mouse on older games anyway.

The gimmick is instead of a right analog stick it has a track pad that moves the mouse pointer around, after turning it to trackpad mode and with the sensitivity up, it seemed to work quite well, only problem was it was a bit awkward for me since I wasn't used to playing mouse style anymore. But it made aiming guns a lot easier though. Using menus, too.

You can also set it to facing directional buttons and that seemed to play similar to a stick, but doing it that way, it only moves in 8 directions. It's kind of hard to aim that way (you can have it emulate a joystick, but SK won't be able to see it since it only has Xinput.. need other programs to convert it)

it has three sets of L/R buttons, the second ones are mapped to right and left buttons by default so I went with those.
Default is to use the top two as previous/next weapon.
The combo of attack / shield cancel / weapon switch seems doable, just need some practice to get used to it with this controller.

Not sure what to use the bottom (grip) ones for, shield bash and bash seems good, but since this controller has a left stick click I used that for dashing.
I ended up with modifier button (to combine with the pad for sprite attacks, this is what I did with my old controller) and mode switch to switch the right pad between buttons and mouse movement.

controller bindings so far, will probably change

Speaking of mode switching, in SK options there's a 'Steam Controller Mode' button, it doesn't seem to do anything though, even when setting up an alternate mode for controls.

Interesting to hear. Don't you have an opportunity to make the stick actually work as a stick? I feel like you're losing a pretty big reason to use a controller if you get no analogue input.

I see you say that SK only supports Xinput. This is actually not true, as I've gotten it working with both virtual gamepads from ppJoy and DualShock 4 (without an Xinput wrapper). Maybe you should look into it all more.

The other way around, the Steam controller only supports Xinput while SK wants DirectInput (although older posts seem to imply Xbox controllers work fine). My old controller used DirectInput.

That sounds wrong, because IIRC Xinput is basically just a standard for how Dinput controllers should work and given that SK works splendidly with Xbox 360 controllers straight out of the box, I don't think the input framework is the problem here. Same goes for my DS4 through InputMapper.

Can confirm xbox controllers should work fine, movement and aiming-wise.

controller

I use an xbox controller with sk most of the time, and i have highly customized the buttons on the controller, but i do have to say, If you want to go gunner, PLEASE, do not use the control stick with 8 directions to aim. It is very hard. Bomber is extremely fun, and so is swordsman, but gunner is difficult.

Xbox controllers automatically register with sk as a gamepad, and should work without any commands or anything.

I did some playing around

I did some playing around with SK on my Steam Link with the controller and noticed the above. Everything seems to be working alright and I personally prefer to have the touchpad to work as a touchpad. I've never been one to play SK with a controller, but if I were to start now this is how I would do it.
