I have read the article on damage, though I am still quite unsure how it works. Let's say I have a Drake Scale Helm (piercing and elemental) and a Scary Skelly Suit (normal and shadow). Would that be better or worse than having Boosted Plate Mail (only normal) and Boosted Plate Helm (only normal).
Damage
Qisheng, I just realized that you have another thread on the same topic:
http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/112291
So what is different in this thread? Are you looking to choose between those two sets specifically?
Thank you, I understand this much better now. I am not looking to choose between different sets. I just have one more question. If I were attacked by a fiend, would I take more damage if I wore only normal armor, or a Skelly Suit and a Drake Scale Helm?
It's hard to give a general rule. The specific numerical values depend on a lot of factors: the depth (15 vs. 24, for example), the difficulty (Advanced vs. Elite, for example), how heated your armor is (level 1 vs. 10), whether you are poisoned, whether the monster is poisoned, etc.
Also, it depends on the specific attack. For example, a trojan is a fiend, so as a general rule it inflicts a mix of normal and shadow. But:
* Its "sword slam" attack is pure normal, with no shadow. So, against that attack, the normal armor would be better.
* Its "charge" attack is normal + shadow. In Tier 3 on Elite difficulty it's probably mostly shadow. So the other armor, with its mixture of normal and shadow, might be better.
@Fiquel
I Interpret your question as 'What Amor defends better in a fiend level' rather than defending against a specific fiend.
My advice is to choose drakon+skelly over normal, because it protects you better against the Status. The pure and final damage number is a Thing that is quite unknown though.
Jenovasforumchar is quite right, that status resistance is usually more important than damage protection. That's covered in my armor guide too.
This thread has been superseded by another thread by the same original poster. So please follow up there, if you want to say more.
this is actually how i did end up here. To be more accurate, the chain started in Fehzors Suggestion Topic.
The answer I did give in this Topic has been how the poster did (hopefully) wanted. The other topic is about a generel Amor decision while this Topic is specific about fiends (most People see fiends as the most troublesome and thus as Special enemies). You are right that People could write everything into one Topic, but there is no harm if you want to intentionally seperate things from eachother by creating two Topics - Topics that may look like the very same Thing at first sight, but if you fallow the thoughts of the creator, they are definitelly different. Exspecially when the opener wants to revamp the Initial question or idea of that Topic without editing the first post from scratch. (and if he would edit it like this, then there would be less replies because People remember that Topic as 'seen and already answered')
I disagree. A topic is rarely about one ultra-precise question, but meanders into neighboring questions. And it makes sense to keep them all in one place. And anyone who actually wants to help is not going to be put off by the thread already having replies.
Furthermore, this original poster claims to have difficulty finding his own threads. If that's true, then it's unlikely that he will ever see your advice.
But I don't care much, especially since there are so few threads now. Have a nice day. :)
I have been thinking a lot about my current loadout. I'm not sure if it's right for me, so I need some advice, especially concerning the gun. I'm still early in the game, so I can make changes pretty easily.
Helmet: Magic Hood (I will probably upgrade it toward Chaos)
Armor: Magic Cloak (Again with the chaos, unless I choose a more defensive branch)
Sword: Fireburst Brandish
Shield: Bristling Buckler
Gun: Magnus (my main concern is the speed. It is not very fast, and I find this to be troublesome. Plus, until I get to 5 star items, the Magnus will only deal piercing damage, which is upsetting especially considering the popular level The Sovereign Slime, in which case the Magnus is useless. I have considered other options which use normal damage, and I have a list).
List for other guns:
-Volcanic Pepperbox (my concern with this one is the damage)
-Grand Tortofist ( I worry that this one will be too hard for me to use, as I am not too experinced)
If anyone has any other gun ideas, or suggestions in general, I will happily consider them. Also, please tell me whether the Iron Slug is worth the wait, though I do not think I will be getting to 5 star gear anytime soon.
Your most recently started version of this thread, where I gave you the Combuster + Iron Slug advice, is here.
Yes, the fact that Iron Slug deals piercing until the final upgrade can be a problem. But if your goal is to kill the Royal Jelly, consider just using your Combuster (whatever its star level). Keeping RJ on fire is a great tactic. In this way you can continue with your current plan.
Volcanic Pepperbox is fine. I don't recommend the tortofist guns for inexperienced players. They are hard to use.
Alchemers are great in general. For RJ you could get Umbra Driver (shadow). Or you could use Nova Driver or Storm Driver, which might be more widely useful than Umbra. But alchemers take some time to master, and they aren't super-powerful until 5 stars.
If your main concern is beating RJ reliably, so that you can farm RJP for crowns, then we can give you other advice. Mine would be: Use weapons and pickups to keep him poisoned, on fire, shocked, cursed, or stunned.
While I am having trouble defeating Royal Jelly, he is not my main concern. My main concern is basically all levels, if there is a monster such as a Jelly or Construct, it will slightly inconvenience me, which in the heat of battle could mean life or using a Spark of Life. I cannot decide on a weapon, and I feel that I will never be able to. Unless the Magnus becomes convenient fast, I will have to switch to a different gun. I tried the Autogun, to get a feel for it, but I found that while shooting, I was quite vulnerable if I miss. I did an early level, one with lichen, and I found that the 2 star Autogun did significantly more damage than the 3 star Magnus. I am simply trying to find a nice, all-around gun that won't leave me too vulnerable for too long, and won't be too hard to use. I also tried an Alchemer, and that didn't go to well. I am finding that I am more comfortable with medium-fast speed guns. I simply cannot decide, can someone decide for me?
I already did decide for you: Iron Slug. You're supposed to use the charges, not the regular attacks.
The reason why these guns are not working for you is that they take practice. They're a little challenging. Perhaps you don't want a challenge?
Then get a blaster, particularly Valiance. You can use it on any monster. Have fun.
Question:
What type of playing do you prefer? Close combat or ranged agile combat?
Beginning advice:
To get started into the game i suggest you to go for the cobalt sword line and the blaster line, if you are more the ranged type. Upgrade those two weapons to a Maximum of 4 star and lave them there. Do not upgrade them into 5 stars since they will get weaker than the 4 star version with max heat Level until the 5 star Version hits heat Level 7 - and there are definitelly weapons that morely worthy to get heated with 5 stars.
But as a starter, this offers nice normal damage and the blaster does also knock back enemies with each shot to slow enemies down who want to taste your leg or arms.
The sword can be charged from distance, then you run near Monsters to provoce an attack (watch the animations for that), dodge this attack and right after they finished attacking, get Close and unleash the Charge to knock them on safe distance instantly.
However, if you like the combuster, you should stay with it. As Bopp already mentioned, it is a great sword and exspecially its fire Comes in Handy in many situations. As an easy normal damage gun aside, you still should bring blaster.
Shield:
As shield, your current briestling buckler offers piercing and nomal defense. That is a nice choice in lower tiers and vs the jelly Mission, but remember that this shield does not protect against any statuses. If you do not want to specialize around swords, then you should go for an Owlite Shield that protects perfectly against the shock on the next Boss after Jelly King and is also very useful against the currently highest Boss in his fire fortress.
Using Magnus-type guns:
These guns are meant to be used in one of the two ways:
1. Use its Charge attack to deal damage to one enemy a few times or a crowd a few timnes
2. use the normal attack to Keep Monsters knocked down by newer needing to reload the Clip (shoot with a lower frequency)
Hi, Qisheng. Which armor is better depends on which enemies are attacking you. You may be interested in this recent thread on the same topic. You might also find the wiki article Defense useful.
Each enemy attack contains a specific mixture of damage. For example, a fiend's attack might contain some normal and some shadow, but no piercing or elemental. The specific amounts depend on the depth, the difficulty, etc.
Meanwhile, your armor defends against a specific mixture of damage. For example, Drake Scale Helm with Scary Skelly Suit protects against a little bit of normal, piercing, elemental, and shadow.
When a monster's attack hits you, each of your armor numbers gets subtracted from each of its attack numbers. In the example above, your piercing and elemental protection do nothing, because the monster attack doesn't contain any of those. Your normal and shadow armor absorb some of the normal and shadow damage. The rest of it gets through the armor and gets subtracted from your health. Does that make sense?
