I own 18 helms, 16 armors, 14 shields, 26 swords, 15 guns, and 18 bombs for a total of 107 5* gear.
I have 32 different 5* gear I'm still heating. (because not enough rads)

Also I personally just use the same costume all the time, somehow I don't really get bored of this one. I don't really find an appeal to go for say piece of equipment (such as example Heavenly Iron, I do like the look of the armor) for just cosmetics.

For the time being (speaking of 5* only):

15 swords (altho i have 2 levis and da-s atm)
16 handguns (2 blitz-s [WTS asi vh + ctr med blitz ^^])
12 bombs
24 sets (2 vog sets) + seerus mask
12 shields

That's a total of 79 five star items, ALL of them are heated to lvl 10, except one of the DA-s, which I unbound (is reserved for a friend).

I run the bk set around 95% of the time.

Started playing in july 2011. 6578 hours waste... erm, I mean spent in the game. (I swear I have a life, too!!!)

I'd say most of my gear WAS fully heated before that update, however I've made a BUNCH of new gear (at least 7-8 sets) after that, since:
- the reason the new heating/upgrading system was intented is to experiment with new gear. Too bad it only applies for LOOOOONG term, when you have so much extra rarities, you can't rly do much other than making new stuff. Or stocking them up and drowning in thousands of shinings and hundreds of eternals. Whatever floats your boat.
- I could, cuz I did have said extra rarites.

I did try out a bunch of new weapons and playstyles with the various sets, but then ofc the bk event of 2014 changed it all... Oh, and I've also 'upgraded' most of my commonly used weapons by getting better uv-d ones, so I spent time and rads heating those new ones up as well.

But nowadays I don't make new 5* items (except for arms app, but I obvioulsy don't spend rads on those) so I can happily pile up radiants, if I were to get new toys.

Excluding trinkets (which don't need to be heated), I have about 70 5-star items. All are fully heated. But only about 10 of them have been heated since release 2013-07-30 (forge and battle sprites).

Alright so here goes my gear list:

16 five-star swords + winmillion, all fully heated.
28 five-star guns, all fully heated.
11 five-star bombs, 9 fully heated.
22 five-star helmets, 15 fully heated, 2 items unbound.
19 five-star armors + 2 three-star kat cloaks, 17 fully heated.
11 five-star shields + swiftstrike, 4 fully heated + fully heated swiftstrike.

Question answering time!

Did you heat the majority of your gear before the 2013 Battle Sprite update?
Most of these items I'd acquired post-battlesprites update. I want to say before that update I had around 5 shields, 7 helmets and 7 armors, 2-3 bombs, 4-5 guns and probably around 8 swords?

Complete Sets?
Probably have a few, but the shield area is typically lacking. I have dragon scale outside of the shield, don't have omegashell, etc. Most armors I have the helmet for and vise versa, outside of the kat armors, but I'm working towards that.

Use Armors or just Costume?
I do have costume armor sets but they're more or less the shadow lair sets or lower star gear. All other sets have practical use for me, or at least have in the past.

Do you heat to level 10?
I stated what the heat levels were up above, but I figure I can take this into its own answer. Yes, I do still heat my gear as I'm constantly creating it. I never stocked up on radiants when they were abundant because I never really liked to farm FSC, so the only time I've ever had over 2000 radiants was after the first black kat event after battle sprites. All of those were used rather quickly however, and I'm typically under 100 at all times due to, you know, leveling up gear and acquiring new gear. Typically can have things heated within a few days of creating them however.

When did you start playing Spiral Knights? + How long have you been playing?
Steam release. My achievements say I got the "first steps" achievement on June 14th, 2011.
Interestingly enough, looking at my achievements, apparently I went from 0* to completing a tier 2 expedition within 4 days, back when mist was around. I got around quickly back then.

However, I took a pretty long break. Didn't really play the game all that much for two years. Looks like I played until fall of 2011, jumped in occasionally and at random throughout 2012, and returned full force to the game in summer of 2013. I remember it only being like, a month or two of really getting into the game before battle sprites became a thing, but I wasn't around for the WIP announcements of battle sprites.

Since summer of 2013 however I've been a fairly active member of the community. Have 4690 hours logged on Steam, and nearly 195 days logged on my main knight.

To answer your question about 5* gear, yes. How many 5* gear pieces do I have? Yes. Do I get any prizes for this?

Five Star Weapons: 80
Swords: 23
Guns: 31
Bombs: 26
Less than heated swords/guns/bombs: 1/2/1 = 4 total
Noteworthy 4*: H. Decon + 2 Winmillions

Five Star Non-Weapons: 67
Armor: 26
Helm: 25
Shield: 16
Less than heated armors/helms: 7/9 = 16 total
Less than heated shields: 4
Noteworthy 4*: Vitasuit delux, a few other less noteworthy 4* armors that never made it to 5*...

Total 5* gear: 147
Total unheated 5* gear: 24
Total heated 5* gear: 123

Some of these are duplicate gear pieces with different variants. This is how I have more swords/guns/bombs than there are unique swords/guns/bombs.

Most of these were heated prior to the radiant patch, which is what you're getting at and which is what won't be fixed. GG. A very unfortunate GG.

Many of these are costumes. Many of these were not intended to be costumes, but due to radiants are never going to be worth heating. Many of these are at heat level 9, or 8, forever, because I heated them there and then the switch to radiants happened.

I heat all weapons and shields to level 10, with weapons taking priority, including future weapons that may or may not come out. Armor, after you have one-two sets, isn't worth heating. Let me rephrase that- it isn't more worth heating than new weapons or even shields. If I had more rads, I'd heat my armor again. But I don't, and am not farming for like 2000000000 hours over armor, when I can just black kat or black kat/chaos and be OP anyway.

I've been playing regularly since Steam Release. I don't play as often any more, but I'm still mildly active.

I use most of the armors, a few are just costumes.

Most of them were heated after the battle sprite update, but while radiants were still plentiful (and after that, didn't run out until about a year after people started complaining)
Still heating a few pieces of gear here and there, sometimes I get lazy for arms appropriation and give away one of my heated 5* weapons and then make a new one and heat it up.
But that's ok, more 5* forging data is always useful.

More than 90% of the time I use my Chaos set which also happens to be my favourite look! So about 85% of the time I'm just wearing plain armour without costumes.
Do you heat to level 10?
Yes, unless it's a shield as it's proven to be a waste of Fire Crystals for negligible differences in shield strength.

How long have you been playing?
I presume you mean play-time, which amounts to 189 days, 15 hours, 19 minutes and 2 seconds (or 4551 plain hours) on Shidara at the time of writing. Sub-characters have negligible play time and progress.
Did you heat the majority of your gear before the 2013 Battle Sprite update?
Yes. Very few items have been alchemised or indeed heated since the Battle Sprite update.

i use only 5 sets of armor, but depends of what kind of situation im playing, the rest of the armors i just use them like costume (for example almirian armor with divine warden helm because that armor looks cool but in the end it just an azure armor with shadow defense)

Yes, i dont like them being in level 7 due the lack of CTR medium.

When did you start playing Spiral Knights
July 2011 just came to the game because i wanted the spiral sallet hat for Team Fortress2 but liked the game so i keep playing it until november of 2014

How long have you been playing?
Around 3 years, when most of my friends were active in the game, until november of 2014 where we found another game to play together once again (well everyone have already leave the game around 2013 so i have to play with them other games without being together all of us until we found one and once again we are reunited in the same game)

one half was heated before the batle sprite (20 items) and the other half was heated while you can gather a lot of radiant, but people that didnt wanted to leave vanaduke mission complained about them and well we know the story.

6 Armors (Again, 2 I only use in Danger Missions)
5 Shields (On rare occasions I find an excuse to pull out a 6th)

I have the radiants to heat another 2.
The kicker:
At least 33/91 of those were heated after the radiant drought (counted and dated via this thread). I'd put a true estimate closer to 60+/91 since I only had 1 shadow lair set when I got bored of the game (only playing Vana) and left - to return when I had heard the energy system completely changed.

Do I heat to lvl 10? Yes. Reason.
Start playing? Really don't know.
Total Time? Steam says 1234... if you can guess the correct base I used.
Comments? Shields are pretty worthless.

On my main (Steam) character I have:
11 helmets, 10 armors, 7 shields, 11 swords, 8 guns, 9 bombs = 56 five-star items that require radiant fire crystals.
5 of them are less than level 10. I also have 5 4-star items at level 10 that have been waiting to upgrade to 5-star. Four of them are guns, which would be weaker when upgraded to 5-star (and slow charge time until levels 5 and 10).

So yes, I heat to level 10 (or try to). I consider the need for radiants, and lack thereof, to be one of the two biggest annoyances and showstoppers of the entire game since I started playing in June 2011, when SK was added to Steam. The other main problem being the infamous levels named Compound. I have played a crazy lot over the years (thousands of hours logged on Steam). Of the 51 level-10 items, I think maybe 8 of them were since the addition of fire crystals/forge, battle sprites, etc.. I tend not to bother with making other items because I know they would be stuck waiting for rads.

This issue is perplexing. I can't see it as a money grab since there must be very few players who could spend to buy them from the supply depot. 700 energy to buy only 50 rads? They should either add a zero to the number of crystals, or remove a zero from the energy price. Or how about 100e for 50 rads, 50e for 50 shining, etc.?

Getting an average of 80 rads from FSC elite instead of 18 would be a welcome improvement too.
