What this means:

Spiral knights will not shut down, at least for a while. However, it's up to them to develop new content for it, which seems unlikely as they seem more to just be saving it. They can move the game in a new direction if they WANT to though, so we may see an ending yet.

Discuss, since I don't know everything.
Also, note the fact that Eury said "keep games we love alive."

IMPORTANT EDIT:
Eury just stated in a post down below that Gray Havens is NOT a museum for games and that description is out dated.

This means we could possibly perhaps theoretically mabye have new content!!!

YASSSSSSSS

Finally, a new start. Now lets all just hope that Grey Havens is nothing like OOO and will actually listen to ideas produced by players :D

@Erikcat
I'd just like to mention to you and everybody that while they'll likely be better at communication to players, they also could be worse as they are just a small group maintaining servers supposedly like with whirled.

So there's a chance that updates wont be re-releases & cosmetic crates?
Thats interesting.

This is amazing news, I'm super grateful Grey Havens did this. If they do as they did previously, it also means SK would go open source which would allow for players to develop and host it, which is exactly what the game would need to get anywhere from its current state.

Hope they start with an armor rebalance. Minimal effort required and amazing for morale.

Only news better than this would have been "The Spiral Knights Development Team, and all game assets and rights, as well as several former employees of Three Rings, inc, have been acquired by the independent development studio Monomi Park. They will continue support and development of the game following its release by SEGA entertainment."

Best news ever

I just got the news via Twitter minutes ago and it put a smile on my face. The text from Eurydice brought back all the beautiful memories. I am extremely happy and even more grateful that the shutdown I feared won't happen!!!

Fellow Knights... We're back! Grab your weapons! The clockworks are waiting!!!

See you all in Haven guys!
Hopefully for a looong time thanks to Grey Havens :)

Have a wonderful day ! :)

good news

This sounds like a good step.

But a question: is (and if yes, then how is) Grey Havens connected to Sega?

I also do not expect tidal waves now, but it is a good feeling to know that there are people leading a game who actually care about it :)

wonderful news

Glad to see everyone so hopeful in the community. Even if nothing changes there's a much larger opportunity that we'll see something new happen.

The hope for community content is real.

What is Grey Havens?

I searched a bit for 'Grey Havens' but all I get from google are plenty of Lord of the Rings-stuff and two hits that have pretty less to do with SK:

1. a hotel: http://www.greyhavens.com/

2. a music band: https://www.facebook.com/thegrayhavens/ or http://thegrayhavensmusic.com/

3. and much stuff about The Lord of the Rings where this one would seem still most accurate: http://greyhavensgroup.com/

-> Eury, can you please give us a link to the official homepage of Grey Havens that will lead SK now, so we can inform?

WE'RE GONNA MAKE IT AND THIS VALKYRIE WILL SURVIVE

The subject is pretty much all that represents how elated I am to hear that we're being transferred and not shut down! (I was prepared to make a farewell video and I even did fanart to comfort myself... no need for that right now! *Throws Biscotti's confetti into the air and dances in the sky*)

WE MIGHT GET HOME KNIGHTS (AND VALKYRIE/ANGELS), LETS HANG IN THERE

I'm legit surprised that this is happening instead of the game going under, knowing that much of the SK staff had already left the company long ago.

This is all I could find

So other OOO-related products such as Whirled and Bang Howdy were already part of Grey Havens for some time

Researching Grey Havens

So I decided to follow up on the research Jenovasforumchar started.

In an attempt to figure out where the name came from, I remembered that Three Rings is also a Lord of the Rings reference (the elven rings Vilya, Narya and Nenya). I then thought I remembered hearing something about Three Rings trying to make an MMO for LOTR many years ago. I was half right; my search brought me to the resume of Daniel James, former CEO of Three Rings Design.

http://djames.org/resume.html
'An MMO based on JRRT's works.'

My initial reaction was "Cool. They're still paying homage to this little detail."

After this silly little fact hunt, I decided to find out more about Daniel James and came across their LinkedIn profile.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/capncleaver

At the bottom is a rather interesting detail:

'Grey Havens
April 2015 – Present (1 year 1 month)Arts and Culture
Grey Havens is a museum for online games that are not viable to operate for commercial organizations. We presently have three titles operational from Three Rings' catalog.'

Not having a LinkedIn account myself, I can't really check to see if there are any more details but this does suggest a few things:

1.) This information would suggest that the company Grey Havens has existed for quite a while now (over a year).
2.) The former CEO of Three Rings Design has played some role in this company.
3.) I'm no expert but the fact that Spiral Knights would be considered 'not viable to operate for commercial organizations' and that it is considered part of a 'museum' suggests that they don't intend to update the game in any major way.

What seems likely to me is that this is a resting place necessary to preserve the game without worry of any legal issues from publishers such as SEGA (please don't quote me in any legal discussion because I, quite frankly, have no clue).

That's all I could find after some extensive Google searching. Hopefully my ramblings weren't too hard to follow and actually managed to shed some light on the situation (or maybe I just spouted complete nonsense for several paragraphs). I'd be interested in seeing if anyone could elaborate on any of these details further because I'm rather intrigued.

~A sporadic lurker

EDIT: Whirled and Bang Howdy are likely the other two games of the three, as suggested by the pages found by Ultimaximus.

To clarify, the "museum" text

To clarify, the "museum" text is outdated, from the era pre-SK and Puzzle Pirates (which is also making the journey to Grey Havens).

Insert witty comment here

If this means we will get regular content updates again, I'm all for it. I love this game and I spent many, many fond hours on it. It would be a shame for it to just roll over and die.

If the news excites you, do remember that such projects take money. If they end up rolling out updates, any updates, you should consider spending a bit of money. Hopefully, it'll be worth buying of course.

Will Gray Havens still be affiliated with Sega? Honestly though, this seems like great news.

@Atlas-Snowcap

You realize that they were probably the problem right? Greedy publishers pulling the strings whilst not funding the game has seen the death of many great games. I'm glad that something is being done at least. I wouldn't have thought SEGA is involved any more as there has been no mention of them. I hope three rings will succeed on their own and hope that they can come up with new content to bring players back to this game. :)

I wonder if they even have any programmers on the team now... O.o

Good Havens!

Does anyone know if Nick Popovich or Ian Mconville had anything to say about anything regarding spiral knights recently? Do you think they would try to help you at all?

Also not to be insulting but SEGA is a lost cause lately, and it hurts because they used to have really nice games like sonic adventure etc. but doing this to an MMO that once had over millions of people make accounts within 2011-2012 just isn't right I know more people would love the living $#@$ out of this game, and it just needs more attention and advertising, just like before when it blew up on YouTube during its release.

But seriously I don't see Sega doing anything innovative lately, if the mobile market is their main focus, maybe they should focus on stopping people like me from cracking their microtransctions in their mobile games, like that 99 dollar ring pack or whatever in sonic dash, maybe that's a bad business choice, or perhaps they do fine in Asia based countries, I don't really care, they made a mess and grey havens will make this all better as we can hope.

I'm happy for Spiral Knights to be unchained from the SEGAC chains. SEGAC nowadays really is all about Sonic, and nothing else.

To answer Sirthomasrb's question:

Ian said nothing.

Hey, quick question

Are the Spiral Knights Game Masters part of this? I know it sounds like a silly question, but if GMs are (were?) part of sega networks, is Grey Havens bringing the ENTIRE team under its wing regardless of their employment?

I found their website from the LinkedIn page - www.greyhavens.co - but it seems the site is not up. The only other information on the company's LinkedIn page is a short bio, reading:

"A not-for-profit organization established to operate and maintain online games which are still loved by           their creators."

Oh yeah, I completely agree that SEGA is/was likely the cause of the lack of substantial updates/changes to the game - seems like OOO were under pretty tight restrictions. I just wonder if SEGA is still involved with Spiral Knight's copyright and all that stuff, despite the game being transferred to a new company.
