A long long time ago games used to be different in a way because the internet wasn't there, which is to say that once you bought the software it was done and over, which meant that you played it and put it down and thought about it and said wow, what a great title. Then it went back on the shelf and that was that until you felt like playing it again if that time ever came.

Then the internet happened and we came out with games like say.. RuneScape. I played that when I was the children for hours on end. Like it'd be a Friday night and since I didn't have friends I'd just be there chilling on RuneScape fishing and I loved that!

So let me ask you, when was I supposed to quit? There was a super neato cape that let you do an animation you could get if you maxed out a skill and another for quests... But they always made more skills and quests! So the highest level players were always kept busy, because they wanted that cape, or whatever else was added and when they weren't they were still busy socializing, or holding imaginary weddings or whatever else.

World of Warcraft was the same way. Expansions, additions, the game grows with the players.

But now.

Now we have mobile games and it's a new era. I play something called Puzzle and Dragons and it gives you stamina and magic stones and freebies constantly, but most importantly it constantly creates something content wise to spend on and to defeat, which keeps players playing and enjoying it... for how long? Well, as long as they can keep it up, you know? You don't get to a point where you've beaten the game. There is no beating the game.

Minecraft happened too. You build a house on your server but you don't win. There's a "victory" but what about building the best house, or castle, or that redstone calculator you dream of? It just goes on infinitely. It's a monster and it monopolizes your time in ways the older generation didn't.

Pokemon made their answer to Hearthstone but for Pokemon cards recently. Guess what? It uses new cards to fuel the fire, it gives a daily log in bonus to delay the getting bored process and it uses two more daily log in bonus type features for battles (prize wheel! But you can only get one slot per day..) and challenges (like a small daily quest to use fire as your deck type).

BUT

The other type of game is being made still!!!! It's not dead!!!! :LSJKF:EJW:V

So which one is Sprial Knits? Well you tell me it used to run on mist and that was very play-forevery. it has events. Those are pretty play forevery. You can't experience tortos unless you play for a long long time. It has prize boxes that offer new content every time and that's how you play. It rewarded players with honor blades a while ago. It gets updated with new content every now and again, and that's verrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy mmorpgslike But most of all it is an MMORPG, just like World of Warcraft and RuneScape, and like most MMORPGs I don't think we're supposed to stop playing.

Now I'm thinking you're like woah slow doa;wj;n sqwowoowowowo but in case you're not and are like yea but if you get tired just leave yea but guess what

It's someones job to make sure we do not do that.

Yea they keep us busy with events and stuff so we odn't leave and if they fail at this maybe it isn't their fault because who knows segaaaa but HEY why not and you know I had a good thought

if they wannna string us along and we loovuvvuee bieng strunalong they jjust gotta d;o some more events or something gotata put some boxes on the autioni or have the gameaster be like yooouuuuuuuuu u and then they go in game and they play some lockdown wow is that cronus playing lockdown he has the ban stick whats gonna happen im so confused or they tell us something like hey players. This server issue is taking a while it's legacy code, please stand by for takeoff in the meantime have this hundred crySTAL ENERGY as compensation. And we're like Woooaaaa cooooll we know whatttsss uppppp yooooo.

Right now they're doing they're doing an OK job of it I'd say. They made the sock contest and DEAR LORD I WAS HEARD. We got. We getted. We getted and new prizes!!!!!!!!! Happy day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gotta got got to love those devs real good. Cleaver. Mike. Nameless software engineer Idk man but I love youuuuuuuuuuuuu go team devvvvv i love you alllll a;lvkj

Fehzor out.

After reading the full post I am left with a question.

Actually you just pointed out common strategies how games - exspecially how online games - are designed and how they keep attracting Players.

And based on that, you say that Spiral Knights is a game that has not an intended end - which is also obvious.

But to what post is this topic actually refering to?

Offtopic: Are you really Fehzor? Why did you change your nick?

Even if a game have an proper ending, you can always start a new round, this apply to any single campaign games , story games or RPG games. So in truth, no game could ever truly end whether it is digital or physical, no game would ever uninstall itself after you won (well, maybe that one creepypasta game is an exception.). If you want to start the game again, the choice is always there.

probably this

In case anyone is wondering about the thread's title, it's probably a response to posts of mine like this. In that thread and many others, I have argued that players should have realistic expectations, because it leads to a happier life. And, based on the recent history of Spiral Knights, "realistic" updates are "infrequent or small", not "frequent and large".

But if you want to have a thread about monetization, economic balance, player recruitment, that's fine with me.

It is always better to be a surprised pessimist than a disappointed optimist.

Naw Bopp don't expect the developers to fail and tell people to leave when they get bored have more faith in them than that even if they haven't really given you a reason to do that they're great they can do anything they can move a server build us a sprite takes them five minutes technology is magic they just vomit magic all over the place make a game its great

huh?

I think that you meant to address your post to Veridiandynamics.

Also, to quote someone else's text, try wrapping it in <em> and </em>. Doing so can make your post more readable.

Thats the thing.
I dont even like mmorpgs.
I'm more of a strategy-game person.
I like games like warcraft2-3 , starcraft1-2 , HOMM1-2-3-5 (didnt like 4). My all time favourite is dota1-2 (playing it for like 12 years now).
Honestly i dont know why i like SK this much. Kind of crazy :)
