So, I know that Grey Havens isn't exactly "New" Owners, more like the old owners who got mad at the people who took it over and then took it back, But since they're not SEGA or OOO, Does that mean we can expect more content updates with new monsters, lore, items and more? I'm honestly confused... plus it doesn't help that the last time I played people were mad that the gunner update took 3 years to arrive.
New owners, New things?
If you're looking for new gameplay that will give you a reason to come back it's probably a no.
The person above consistently has posted these "maybe in the near future" comments every month for the past two years, so you might want to wait for an actual employee to give an announcement on gameplay updates so you don't get salty like most last year.
@Sciger wait...Grey Havens is not for profit? I guess that is why SK is permanently dead. :/
That explains why they don't have to listen to or respond to the players, why they kept AT in LD despite massive complaints, why they didn't change the forge, and why they had updates that the players didn't understand. They are doing what they want with the game, and have absolutely no incentive to improve the experience for players or listen to player suggestions.
That's completely fine though, it is their game after all. I am quite disappointed though, I was kind of hoping that they would come out with some huge overhaul that would raise the daily player count to 1k+ or 4k+ once again. If the game returned to it's pre-2012 level of status, I'd hop right back in in no time.
That news is actually really disappointing...ah well, nothing's perfect. Hopefully Grey Havens are enjoying their lives, their game had a good run. I still stand by my previous post though, if I magically become super rich IRL, I'd totally buy this game and contract work out to companies to bring it to it's full potential. Such a beautiful game.
Understatement of the year that we want circa 2011-2012 pop. The thing is I still see specific things that are trivial in edits that can do such, but I do not see GH implementing them.
Because we need some scale balance here I'll pipe in - Grey Havens has already made some pretty nice changes to the game since acquisition, such as the golden slime casino (and all its bells and whistles), more frequent game events, made a few game changes (click and resizing windows is amazing), forum contests, etc. However as Petater said, if you're looking for frequent new content to come back for we'll just need to wait and see what happens.
I wouldn't doubt we have something new and exciting in the future, however there hasn't been a great track record of speedy content in the last few years. There has been stuff, just not fast.
"there hasn't been a great track record of speedy content in the last few years."
Yea Fangel what's up with all this negativity? Grey Havens promised us an update in a couple of weeks with free mixmasters and core bosses and whatnot. Whatshisface revealed it in that thread so we need to hype it now.
I'd say Spiral Knights is now once again a work in progress and that's a huge departure from the SEGA era.
development age->neglected age->bits-and-pieces age
"Maybe in the near future" is probably the best way to look at it.
When you look at the timeline, we've only just picked up the fact that SEGA (and not the devs) was ignoring the game.
This "not the devs" part makes all the difference, as nobody actually realized it was the higher-ups' doing (and if they did, it wasn't communicated clearly).
Moving on, my point is that "Maybe in the near future" is actually pretty grounded now that we're out of the promo-flood. The mods actually talk to the community, we get updates and/or events far more than twice a year, and from what I've seen the Steam comments have been a lot less...vile.
Isn't that what was wanted to begin with? It's certainly a far cry from "shut up and eat recolors", which means there's reason to have a hopeful outlook (and maybe a dash or two of patience).
Spiral Knights has the most clingy fanbase of anything I've ever seen; those who enjoy it for what it's worth tend to play it a lot more than one would expect from a Java MMO, and those who dislike where it's at tend to speak their mind.
A lot.
Even if they put it down over a year ago.
Gunner update antihype
It's a good idea both in social affairs and game development to not make concrete promises, and that was a mistake on OOO's end. (Though to be fair, they had a lot of momentum at the time).
Promising that kind of thing and then being muzzled by SEGA sorta killed PR as the community didn't exactly know what had happened and nobody would tell us. For about 2-3 years.
Broken record here, but that kind of dilemma=terrible PR=bad development rep
Trivial, hour-of-dev-time edits
Up-front, there's really no telling why they aren't fixed. Seemingly, it would be simple to reach in and tweak a few things.
However I do also realize that unforeseen consequences are a big part of that; if you were to change parts of the coding, others might act up due to compatibility issues. "Take one down, patch it around, 187 bugs in the code."
Best answer is that SK really needs to re-open its test servers specifically for that kind of thing, but not officially-release until it's been proven bug-free.
At this point though it's better if they say what they're up to sorta, and explicitly put a disclaimer the concept may never get past the testing or concept stage.
Nick never really put up a disclaimer, so people took them for granted as patches in the near future.
That would work, but also remember that sneak-previews lose hype after a while without anything further, so they'd have to be small but consistent.
I'd say maybe a screenshot or two every two weeks on the Twitter page and/or Steam announcements and/or a forum Announcement thread would do some good in that regard.
Oh, and of course, disclaimers are a necessity.
Glad to see my post has stirred some interest! What I think I'm getting from this is that Grey Havens is fixing a lot of issues, making some smaller content, and the golden slime casino is actually worth looking into? I might have to load the game up tomorrow and poke around for a bit. This post wasn't meant to stir any negativity, just to hear what the rest of you think. I'll leave it open so others can chime in. Who knows? Maybe a GM will stop by and give some insight. Thanks for getting me up to date, guys.
Spiral Knights still has a lotta potential, not just for improvement, but for everyone, and out of many possibilities to keep updating the game, making recolors & reskins & recycles of said things I mentioned of content already made had made things in the game a bit less interesting. I mean, we already have a lotta them, & some had owned plenty.
Despite many numerous pleas to keep making missions, new things, & so on, OOO kept making recycled content, like the many jewel themed prize box promotions they kept making through the months before OOO dissolved.
You know, I think that was the one thing SEGA asked them to do to keep making more money from them, since they were very under strict financial troubles while their corporal restructurings kept going on. Well, that's from my perspective, anyway.
Nevertheless, to many, they felt like the game's steam was running low, but I think it's not. This game still has potential. OOO didn't have time to think back on it & return to it, like how they have before they were acquired by SEGA in late 2011.
Well, at first, the acquisition was very exciting, seeing the idea of more potential things they would have done, & it was a thrill while it lasted to them. However, the short years went by, & it was known that some financial problems kept hitting SEGA, despite some trying their best to keep their profits going, & it was clear the acquisition wasn't thrilling anymore.
Guess making much more content that's already recycled is what they got while they were under SEGA's corporate thumb in their final years of OOO's acquisition times.
Let this whole outcome should serve as a huge, albeit important, reminder to all who want to go into the gaming industry; don't plan & commence acquisitions to larger older companies that are, or may be, already under financial distresses. They'll only strangle you like a massive corporate cobra, seeking to strangle & siphon the life, that represents money they keep needing, out o' ya, & asking to do other things that are rather pointless to many to keep them away & happy, like numerous mobile games that already have too simple, & even pointless, ideas that have no purpose & interest to those who still want what they truly want, to keep going with the console and handheld(like 3DS, E.G.,) gaming industry, & I do not mean the mobile gaming industry. Stay independent. Lot more freedom in game development that way.
I know, it's a bit lengthy, but know that I'm stating my opinion on things that have been going on with some things in the gaming industries lately. Not complaining or something like it. Just stating.
Well, anyway, back to the topic. While we may be a bit saddened to see OO get swallowed up, we're glad GH bought SK & made their time to continue the legacy & potential the game still has.
Despite past promises & insights on the game's development & plans that went into the dark in the years that went by, I can see GH bringing back the hype & excitement this game needs to reclaim, without overpromising or underpromising anything. The Golden Slime Casino additions proved that GH's starting on that very well, & I can see that they'll no doubt get back to what OOO had before.
We just need to have patience, belief, faith, & trust in them.
Sure, as a very small team, albeit formerly OOO people, their resources are way limited, but I'm sure in time, the team & their resources will get larger.
Well... they got a lot more freedom in making the game's content again, now that SEGA's no longer under their corporate grip, anyway.
Let's keep wishing GH the best of wishes, like always.
Grey Havens are holding onto OOO's games to be operational as far as we know. These past few months we're seeing things happen for this game, but the other 4 games they own have shown less activity. Several insights indicate that there's only so much they can do (Upon reading the above comments, I agree to the amount of resources they have and what can be possible.) For now, we've only been patient, with the mindset that "Now Grey Havens is free to do whatever to the game, we should put hope they shed light on it like in the "good ole days"" and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's not our only option.
I myself thought about waiting, seeing what can happen. It's just what we do as players, only able to give feedback and occasionally hear from the developers. However, if Grey Havens truly desires for this game to stay alive, they need our help. They do need this community, and the money people still spend on the game (Just for the support.)
I can't exactly give suggestions, nor can I evaluate everything others have said already. I'm just another long-time dedicated player who wants this game to stay and evolve. Not expecting for the game to last forever, but the IP of spiral knights keeps me going, that if someone can transform SK to have sequels, prequels, a new generation can enjoy it as well as the fan base.
This is my take on this matter at least. I'll gladly keep Spiral knights in my energetic heart, continue to support Grey Havens, and do my part in entertaining the SK community with me shenanigans.

You know, I was thinking about this game recently and came around to see if anything was actually changing, since it seems like it's been pretty dead in the water for a long time, which is a shame since I really enjoyed the art, music, and premise of the game. Gameplay just got stale after a while, and it seemed like there wasn't anything left to do, but...
Maybe there's a chance now. Maybe it can come back around and continue to live. Stranger things have happened.
I always do what many have always done time and time again, keep their hopes alive. Even in tough times, especially in the gaming industry, we still need to stay strong and keep supporting what's been best for numerous years.
I think we can expect new content from them - slowly. They are a not-for-profit organization after all, and I imagine they're a rather small team. Given the relatively short time they've had Spiral Knights, I'd say they're doing a pretty good job with what they've managed to push out the door so far. We're getting bug fixes here and there which is pretty nice as we didn't even get that very often during the final 2 years under OOO/Sega. I did file a bug report just yesterday regarding the Gunner Update recipes that should be in the HoH that aren't, got a response within an hour that the devs have been informed.
I really do think they're trying to keep SK interesting while other bigger stuff (new content I imagine) is in progress through the use of events, some promos and of course, the golden slime casino which is continually getting cooler in my opinion. Major updates will happen, I think, but given the circumstances in which Grey Havens works, I don't expect major updates to occur rapidly. They can only do so much in such amount of time with the people and resources they have.
