I am wondering how many old players still play the game..(when mist existed)
I hope we arent few...
Old Players
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...
Or something.
Are we meeting up for a party? Because I forgot the snacks if so.
I did bring a few boxes of pool noodles though, so if someone provides the water we'll be set.
I just came back after 3 years or so. I enjoyed the way the arcade wing of Haven was actually used as there were no missions. And everyone would get hyped about which gate is coming next.
Games change, I still love it
Eh, I'm here from the age of Mist.
But... I liked the free Alchemy Orbs. And free elevator access.
Many old players still are around. Many are still playing as well.
I've got waaaay too many hours invested in this game. Still enjoying every moment of it. :)
I hope we arent few...
We will be, eventually.
But... I liked the free Alchemy Orbs. And free elevator access.
Did you also like radiant drought and the lack of communication between dev and the player base?
I've been here since summer of 2011, and my first post was complaining that the Silent Nightblade recipe cost too high.
I feel old.
I'm pretty sure a large player base right now are all people who played in the mist energy era (as I like to call it). I assume it's because we've put so much time into the game that we just can't leave it whether it be logging on every month or so or still being relatively active. And yeah, I came from the mist energy era too.
I joined as soon as I heard about Spiral Knights through a TF2 promotion for a hat. I think that took place very shortly after it left beta. I remember days of mist (hated how it limited my free play), revives through teammates and no accessories whatsoever. cx I was so excited when accessories were introduced, still have a pair of toasty drags on my vog cub coat from that first dragon wing promo.
I've been around since the mist. I don't think I've adapted to change in the game all too well. I was used to paying for ele passes and heating gear, and one way of progressing, and watching the game shift tactics... I want to use the word "force"... forcing me to grind and play the game longer than I should.
I've been complaining for years, and watched petitions and requests, and many suggestions to try and make the current state of the game more friendly.
It's not the same when you can't heat up all your 5* gear at the same time.
I hate crafting in this game.
I miss mist energy... I miss being able to go outside.
I'm an off and on player nowadays. Back when mist was around and when OOO was giving us new things was when I was non-stop on. I just hope to see GH do something good with the game. I'd hate to witness it going completely dead, it's too good.
The mist era was harder i think.Or to be specific you needed patience.I remember myself planning to craft a 5 star like it was an amazing event. When Mist was ending i tried to play the merchant by selling Green shards. The fact of mist energy gave the opportunity to see many gear with uvs..That was a nice thing to see then.I think it was better then, dont know. Now new players grind like no tomorrow and the leave the game cause in one month u can do everything in this game..I apperciate the devs posting the Haven State topic but speaking for new content about slime casino and Iron guild hall, well you cant tell that those will save the game. The upkeep decreased, that bought some time but if we dont see a new mission with a boss,i think many of us will lose the motive to play anymore.Even now if they dont have the time to update cause they need to fix some issues still they were suggested many small things in various topics that could make the game better. This game is so unique its a pity not to develop further and just keeping it alive..I hope they ll put some new content that matters soon..
I've been here since way back in the day as well. Still find ways to enjoy the game, but like with all games, need to take a break from time to time. I play video game in concentrated bursts.
Mist was great for the economy of small arms dealings, it was far easier for new players to get their hands on all sorts of weapons and armor and try them out before settling on one to begin the massive grind to the ungodly expensive 5 star equipment.
Now the game's a lot better for those who want to actually play, and it's a lot easier to get to 5 star, but end-gamers got jibbed because of the system that replaced it. Although, it's not like you even need fully heated weapons, with how easy Normal mode is, and how easy Advanced is with the current state of equipment balance. You won't hear about that from the forge haters though, who seem to think every patch occurs in a vacuum.

Pew pew pew pew pew pew pew shots fired
but seriously why the hate bro you like that forge dont you mmmm forge i bet you do
Hexzyle is implying that normal and advanced difficulties are worth playing.
Midnight are u still playing sk or you just check forums?
@Midnight-Dj You seem to spend awfull amount of time in forums for a game you dont like anymore..
Anyways i hope the Devs realize that if they want to keep the game alive they need to make an update that really matters.
I dont try to be negative i am just saying what i think it ll happen if they dont actually update.Of course i can be wrong too..
Ahhh, I have nostalgia from the first Rose Regalia, (which was supposed to be the only Rose Regalia). It was the first time I spent money on the game.
Whether I want to spend times on this forum is up to me and no one else.
Hexzyle really hits the nail on the head. Mist's time way back then way much more restrictive on people who came onto the game to play the game, but for a person who was endgame (ie, idles in haven and socializes a lot) it was very open. Energy purchases were also required to move forwards in the game, which meant you had various "tiers" of players with different skill levels in different parts of the game, all enjoying their current area.
Now-a-days we have a more traditional game in terms of design. You play as long as you want, and end-game has a grind to it. In this game however, your end-game gear is acquired for cheap and gets marginally better to become "most powerful", making the end-game grind optional for players who don't really want to do it. There are people who want to be the most powerful but just want to "get there", and the path that was short but more drawn out (mist) was nicer on them than the path that is long but more compact (rarities).
That being said, the game is still fun. I'm excited for whatever game updates we have in store in the future, and additionally anything the community is able to throw together!
The only thing I miss about mist was that it was an excuse to schedule a full tier run with my friends, so we could spend our mist together. Nowadays there aren't many reasons to play as a group.
In regards to playing normal, if you play a new low level character, non-normal groups are rare. My buddy also uses normal difficulty for recipe runs.
And I think the best thing people forgot about the mist is that SK back then allowed you to progress at your own pace, you can blitz through the missions fairly quickly and just get the best gears with a bit of RL cash or grind daily and use the 100 mist to lessen the cost of crafting. The health share system can allow stronger players to spare health for the less skilled and you actually get rewarded with heat for doing so.
I still just barely exist. Been in SK since my cousin gave me a beta key, and its lore took root in my heart. I'm an aspiring writer so among other stories I like to casually develop my own SK adaptation in my head, just as a hobby I guess. But I've not been particularly active in the game or community for ages.
**waves**
I still log in every once in a while to check what's new. Still waiting for the day we can buy proto armor from Greave **shameless self-promotion**
I was here since the mist days. I've been on SK since it launched on Steam, but took big breaks. When I reached the massive grind wall after getting 4* gear, I stopped. Came back in 2013 (I think?) after mist was erased, and alchemy orbs/forge crystals were a thing. Stopped again shortly after, when Rads didn't drop at all, couldn't level any 5* gear to 10. (Still don't have any 5* gear at level 10). Came back again for the gunner update, stopped again shortly after.
Now I just came back because I had enough of FPS games. Though I only play occasionally.
I've been here since 2012, I don't play a lot anymore, but I do log in to check for new updates, etc. I sometimes end up playing for 2 months, then quit again.
I remember the days when content was great, new missions, shadow lairs, ele passes, the DLC
started playing when AU was introduced. play evveeryyyday and i feel that mist was actually better than no more mist, it made every day something to look forward to and when there was elevator energy consumption reduction, it was the best thing ever. also i remember paying attention to the new arcade rotations and actually changing what i wanted to fight depending on what materials i wanted and clearing one tier a day until i can just go straight for tier 3 recipe runs. stopped soon after no more mist. still come back to check every now and then and even get on.
I've been around since mist... well kinda.
I had a steam account but eventually I stopped playing for a few years, and when I came back EVERYTHING WAS DIFFERENT.
It was pretty cool.
I got given like 50 sparks of life immediately.
I was on back in the days of mist energy! I really like the new way of crafting, it's so much better this way!
I kinda like reading through this thread and seeing the fact that everyone takes breaks from this game for various amounts of time. However, we all always come back to it whether it's just checking for updates, nostalgia that leads to playing for a little while, or just wanting to play. As I like to say, SK kinda just has that charm to it that keeps bringing us back.
SK does have that charm to it. I don't know about everyone but SK will always have a special place in my heart. It think it all happens because of the community.
Guess you could add me to the list, I don't play anymore, but I check for updates.
Pretty old player myself, used to play and stream PVP a bit. Doesnt seem the game has updated aside from adding purchasable DLC costumes. Last time i played was during the whole change with pets, elevator cost, etc.
Elevator cost, Sparks of Life, etc, all bad. I still dont get why they did it, why would they ever limit how much you can potentially play for the day ? Its just silly. The lack of content updates as well, not good.
Honestly decided to check how things were going today, still see nothing changing. I dont know what happened but the game itself is simplistic enough for a small development team to update and create new content for it so i dont know why, at the very least, that isnt happening. It seems like they just gave up.
PVP is one of my favorite things about this game as well, its the only game with PVP similar to the old as hell game called "Survivor Project".

At that time Mist Energy was still around though all things like PvP and Missions were there, so i have absolutely no idea how it was in 2011.
After a half-year break i came back this summer, met new people, reunited with old ones, and now sticking with them.
This game just has something others don't. It's not perfect, but it's quite unique.
Sure Spiral Knights is relatively small and level building is rather simple since they just take tilesets and randomize them. But when it comes to some content updates (most notably new missions), those can actually take time. Trying to come up with new tilesets and ideas to make missions seem more unique and more importantly, fun, takes time. Also, new story missions will DEFINITELY take a lot of time because of keeping up with the story and making it engaging. Writing can be difficult, especially with so many people to make happy with the direction they take it. (Yeah I know the community is small right now, but that's still quite a decent amount) And Cronus has already confirmed that they are indeed creating new content so no, they did not give up.
Plus, elevator energy costs and sparks of life were never in the game at the same time.
I've come and gone over the years, but I've liked the game and still remember it from childhood. I'm not always on, but when I am I always try and have fun with others, and even try and talk about the game a little. In general, though, I played Mist era until around 3* when things started to get a bit difficult to craft(and I wasn't even that great back then!).
There was a huge uproar because of the "DLC", Quite a few players left the game because the OCH DLC was promised to be free or buy-able with energy (Can't quite remember which one it was), while it is buy-able with energy now, it's a bit 3 years late. The DLC kinda ruined T1 LD aswell, since hammer's are the strongest sword available in T1, it became P2W and it died.
Ah, the good old days of mist energy........oh wait, they sucked lol. When I was a noob during the first 2 weeks after I finished beta and still believed cobalt/levi/master blaster was the stuff of gods. I cried in many a corner when my friend got vog and a DA and I realized my life was meaningless xD There are some things I miss, and some I don't; elevator costs, but I still like the game, even without a constant flow of new content. This game was a great part of my childhood, so I'll enjoy what memories I have but not hang on to them too tight. I can still enjoy the game as it is today.
Played since October 2011, haven't played pretty much at all since 2013 though.
Mist was super annoying. Getting rid of it was probably the best thing they ever did. I have to say I feel nostalgic for how freeform the game was before missions, you just went into the arcade and went as far as you could, got mats and crowns, and crafted better stuff. It was just you doing your own thing and setting your own goals. To some people that might not be compelling enough (in fact I'd say for myself today it wouldn't be), and that's cool, but it was more than enough to keep me going for 380+ hours, though I was quite lackluster in my skills and my choice of gear. I don't regret it, though; it's more rewarding to finally complete that super awesome set you want than a set that's powerful and useful, but not as cool.
Since 2013 I've put in probably 10-20 hours total, not because the game is bad now or anything, but because I've gone off MMOs since then. They just don't scratch the itch anymore. Ironically my attention span seems shorter now than it ever was before, and I can't find myself coming back to games day after day, week after week, to grind for gear, even if I reeeeally want it.
I really love the story and world of SK - it's still one of my favorite universes, though I've forgotten most of the intricacies by now. It's about space knights, man, what's not to like? I wrote a few (awful) fanfictions back in 2011/12, you can probably find some here.
I love pith helms. Possibly one of my favorite items in the game! With that in mind, I am trying to collect all of the pith helms.
I have hallow, blazing, frosty, volcanic, and spiral.
If any of you knights have themed pith helms for sale, please let me know.
My knight name is Killaboinine. Add me and/or send me mail to lmk. Thank you!
Iv been around since 2010. Iv seen everything lol. The game still has so much potential and like everyone else on this forum post iv invested over 2000 hours in this game over the course of 6 years. Even now i still enjoy the game. I still have hopes that this game will make a roaring come back.
This thread makes me feel old. Woof.
I am also one of those "SK veterans", too. I remember the mist system. Boy did it limit our play time. I remember playing since 2011, and I have not yet reach Vanguard to this day. I haven't played for a long time, though... reason being is the fact that I am using a crappy toaster instead of a PC. Planning on buying a laptop to play games (especially SK, miss playing this game). But I gotta make mahself sum mulah doe.
Your use of Iv instead of I've triggers me.... TRIGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERED. But in all seriousness, yeah, SK has serious potential.
I suppose I could chime in.
Mist sucked, yo.
