Cradle. Year... I literally don't give a crap anymore.
We got a new task, as if numerous attempts to purge the Swarm wasn't troublesome enough, now we got this to deal with.

A team of about 20 Recon Rangers led by one of the higher ups mysteriously disappeared at Depth 22 while investigating some unknown activity regarding poison gas.
Not much is known about this gas, except that it is obviously poisonous, and that it doesn't even look like poison gas.

"Our squad has a size of 3, as a covert operation.
The primary objective is to reach a control terminal and hack it for the coordinates of important areas, in which we will be able to vent the gas or shut it down completely.
A secondary objective is to locate and rescue any survivors.
The radar's down, so we'll-"

"What do you mean the radar's down?"

"...Ah yes, the gas is also sending out jamming signals. Probably full of powdered tinfoil or something."

"Gas that sends out jamming? What else are they gonna come up with, robots that-"

"STOP interrupting the briefing."

"..."

"Thank you. Everyone will wear gas masks to replace their headgear. These offer as much elemental protection as a trinket could, but render you practically immune to the gas." The captain cleared his throat. "Alright, all of you, let's start."

-Depth 22-
"Put on the gas masks." The captain said, putting on a gas mask of his own.

"Gas masks are on, sir." The third operative said.

The captain checked his radar. It was jammed, of course. He activated his communicator. "This is Captain of the 114th Squadron. We're on the 22nd Depth... Hello?"

The second operative giggled. "Didn't you remember that the gas has a jamming effect, dear?"

"Screw it. Okay people, ready your swords. We haven't completely analyzed this gas so we don't want to be using the carbines. The gas might be flammable.

(The two operatives will be referred to as Two and Three at this point.)
Three drew a Khorovod, and after some thought, said: "Captain, if the gas is flammable, then shouldn't it already have lit up? There were Recon Rangers around here several hours ago, they could've easily created several sparks."
Two brandished a Silent Nightblade, and shrugged in response.

"While that is easily a possibility, it would be wise to move in stealth, this gas obscures vision."

"Says the person also wearing Night Vision Goggles." Two said.

The captain sighed. "Let's just go already, we're wasting time."

It was a short walk, surprisingly. The control terminal was just a building of some sort. They decided to add stairs when building it for some reason.

The captain looked through the window of the building door. "Hmm... Looks like a standard devilite apartment. The gremlins replaced one of the windows with a door for their installation."

Two sighed loudly. "Ugggggh. When can I take this stupid gas mask off. It's so hard to breathe with this thing on!"

"When there is no gas. Simple as that." Three replied nonchalantly.

The captain opened the door after he finished looking through the window. "It's all clear. You two, stand guard here while I hack the terminal."

"Whatever." Two said.

The captain closed the door after listening to his cohort's reluctant 'yes'. He turned and examined all the contents of the room.
One stapler and one computer thing.
He checked what he assumed was important.

Looks like there's no security on this thing. This'll be a piece of cake. Now what should I look for first?

(Pick one of these choices.)
>Search for the coordinates. It's the primary objective.
>Try to vent the gas. It's annoying everyone.
>Search the audio files for anything important.

He could his teammates chatting outside while he was figuring out what he should do.
"What's with Captain Fancypants? Why's he gotta be so serious?"

"I don't know, just because we're flying buddy-buddy doesn't mean that we're buddies."

"So, what do you do for fun?"

"Run around hacking and slashing whatever comes my way. That's what everyone else, does, anyway."

"Aww man, y'all are a bunch of boring people."

Get the coordinates!

I say they should get the coordinates. Firstly, it's what they went there to do anyway. The audio files seems kind of random, and I actually feel like keeping the gas around will make things more interesting.

I guess i’ll start with the coordinates.

Oh. I should’ve guessed as much. Looks like i’m gonna have to poke around this thing some more.

Password Required

~Text Files: To Carnillean
Hey, Carnillean! If you’ve forgotten the password to the computers, don’t worry, I got you covered well. All you need to do is check the video files. You don’t need to look over the whole things either. I’ll give you the time and you can skip to that part. The password will only appear for only one second, and it’s scrambled in the usual way. Good luck with the plan! By the way, the gas requires two passwords to vent.

The captain facepalmed. This was a terrible password system, vulnerable to anyone who decided to watch the video files, find the password and unscramble it. Oh well, he’s forced to watch about an hour or two of security footage.

~Video Files: Depth 21 Observers

Frost, a medic was sent to analyze the gas in depth 22 and provide an antidote for the poison. However an ambush by the gremlins took the team by surprise and they scattered. Frost was left for dead in the ensuing chaos.

Ugh… it… hurts. But not for long.
Frost slowly opened her eyes. The place was snowy. Light breezes of cold whistled through the air, carrying soft flakes of snow with them.
Frost naturally had white hair and used a cloth band to cover her right eye; which was either taken out or was useless. Her armor was a Vitasuit Plus with a Dusky Stranger Cap. She also had a Toasty Vitakit on her back.
The medic sat up, in pain. “Urg…”
Where am I? Am I lost again?

“Gah.” There was a screwdriver embedded into her right shoulder. Slowly, Frost put her hand on the screwdriver.
What… what am I… supposed to do?

She left it alone. Pulling it out would probably hurt really bad.
I’m sure that pulling it out would be fine, but…

Frost looked around the snowy place, and found her equipment.
One Spitfire handgun and a Shocking Edge. She put the handgun in a holster on the back of her hip, and put the knife away in a sheath on her left shoulder.

I need to find the rest of my team.
She started running in a direction not recorded by her radar.

...but then she skidded to a stop, and ran behind a block. There were two scorchers. “Where are the rest of those knightsss? How did they evade us!?”

“Patience.” The other scorcher said. “In time, we will find them all. And then Xander can unleash his grand plan!”

“Nyeh. If we find them all. Let’s split up.” The first scorcher pointed in the direction Frost came from. “You go that way.” Then he turned to go the other way.

He’s coming…
A scorcher drew near, closer to Frost… ready…

Hmmmm

If I was purely in favor of the knight surviving, I would probably say to let the the scorcher pass. However, I think the knight would be able to kill a single scorcher (Vitality means health, right?) without attracting the attention of another, especially if it was stunned.

It would also make the story more interesting.

Also, are you going to write based on the first response, or should we do like a vote thing?

TL;DR: ATTACK THE SCORCHER!!!!

With a swift step, Frost moved forward as the scorcher passed, and whipped him with her handgun.

“GAH!” The scorcher dropped to his knees in pain, and Frost delivered another blow to his head, knocking him out.

“What the- who's there!?” The other scorcher heard his friend's cry, and started running over. Frost dived back behind a block to take cover.

Frost blinked. “What, what's happening?”

The ranger sighed. “Do you remember? Those gremlins ambushed the platoon while we were walking through. We're on Depth 23 now.”

“Where's my stuff?” Frost asked.

“They seized our weapons and took your backpack.” the ranger scratched his head. “By the way, I noticed you were bleeding from your right shoulder, you should probably fix that.”

No I'm not, nobody ever sees me bleed.
Frost checked her shoulder. It felt fine, as if there was no wound at all. “No, it's not my blood. I'm fine.” she lied. But she actually was fine.

The ranger shrugged. “Oh, okay then. We need to come up with a way to get out of here. Got any ideas?”

“I think I still have some things. Let me check.”

The mender leaned on her staff. "Uh huh. If I had a board game I might play it with one of you." The ranger kept silent as she walked away.

Frost pulled out a Sleep Vial. It both damage the cages and cause sleep. But she wasn't so excited about the sleeping part.

"H-hey!" the ranger stammered. "Do you have one of those Recon Ranger Crests?"

"Er, yeah. What for?" Frost replied.

The ranger held his hand through the cage bars. "Give it to me."

Frost took her Crest out from her pocket and handed it over to the ranger.

"Now if I remember correctly... These are rigged with timed explosives."

"I'm sorry, what?"

The ranger opened a panel on the back of the crest, then pressed a button on it a few times. It started ticking. "Get back." He tossed it in-between the two cages.

Tick, tick, tick, tick, ti-

The cages were both destroyed, with Frost and the ranger getting knocked back.

The mender from earlier ran up to the two. "Hey! You're not supposed to leave the cages!"

The captain turned to his crew. ”Alright, I'm gonna have to vent the gas to reactivate the elevator.”

Danger! There's a rogue knight near where you're at and he's killing everything he can! You need to avoid him and escape. If you locate him, do not engage. Repeat; do not engage. He's armed with a sniper rifle!

This is the last stretch. I need to escape and return to Haven without getting myself killed.

Depth 23
This nightmare will never end, will it?
Frost was alone once again. The recon ranger who was with her died from a gremlin marksman. She was able to take down the gremlin and flee.

She slowly walked forward on a metal pathway, holding her handgun warily.

*Ksssssssss* *click* “This is Soren, is anyone out there?”

Frost clicked the button on her earpiece and started speaking in a slightly nervous manner. “This is Frost. Derek
... is down. I'm on Depth 23, can someone find me?”

”Negative, we got our hands full.”

She sighed. “Okay. I'll just come find you myself. Over and out.” Frost continued.

Suddenly, all the lights in the floor popped, covering the area in darkness.

“Who did that?” A gremlin in the distance yelled. “Snipers, take up overwatch positions in the area. Shoot any hostile that comes within range.”

Two crimson pairs of eyes appeared in the distance, along with two green lasers.

Snipers. They're armed with Marksman Rifles and are geared up with N.V.Gs.
The pathway is narrow. The snipers can cut anyone that comes through to pieces.

Frost turned on her earpiece. “Hello? Anyone there?”

”This is Xander, respond!” Frost didn't know what was happening.

”This is Unit 437. We hear you.” But she kept walking forward.

Four more green lasers suddenly appeared in the place. Frost took cover behind some blocks.
The area is a large square platform, with multiple unbreakable boxes surrounding the area. The gremlin snipers were all standing on top of a watchtower in the middle of the platform.

And of course, an impassable gate appeared behind Frost.

”Frost, are you receiving?” Soren said on the radio.

Frost responded. “Yes, but I'm in the middle of something.”

”There's 4 snipers near you, right? We're on the other side of the platform, but we can't advance without taking them all out. By the way, I got Lambard here with me, but he's been hit. He's bleeding out and he needs medical help stat!”

(Shooting Lambard with the handgun may cauterize his wounds without injuring him too badly. Due to the influence of the Core the Spitfire will have some atrocious damage.)

Frost just took her rifle out and continued. Soren reluctantly helped Lambard walk forward.

Lambard stood up. "For the last time, yes. I could've walked without help for awhile but you insisted that I needed help."

"Well, better safe than sorry."

Frost beckoned the two to move forward. "Cmon. We gotta find another way out of here."

"Right behind y-" *phiw!* "Ow!" Lambard dropped to the ground as a bullet flew straight through his upper torso, almost hitting Soren in the process.

I'm assuming he's going to die if he doesn't get help, so I'd say help him again.

Frost ran up to Lambard, and started to try dragging him to some cover.
Jeez, I might get shot by that sniper…

Dragging Lambard was really slow, she moved at about one block per second.
*bang; phiw!*
“Aah!” Frost dropped to the ground as another shot went through her leg; and was able to finish off Lambard.

“Lambard!!!” Soren yelled.

Frost ran; and limped for cover. She started shivering in terror as she huddled up behind one of the blocks.

“Ssssshhh… *sigh* Frost!” Soren barked.

Oh no, oh no, oh no. Someone, save me please.

“Frost!”

Frost looked at Soren, still terrified.

Soren pointed his thumb in the direction of the shot and started blabbing tactics. “We need to deal with that sniper, and quickly! If we stay here then we’re toast!”

Frost ignored him as tears started streaming from her eyes.
"If you locate him, do not engage. Repeat; do not engage."

Soren facepalmed and just waited. Their heart rates gradually slowed down; the sniper seemed to be leaving them alone. Or he was just patiently waiting for one of them to break cover. “Frosssttt.” He whispered. “We need to do something.”

Frost didn’t respond, because she just heard the activation of several proximity mines.

"Y... You gotta shoot him." Frost said with what little confidence she had.

Soren peeked out of cover for a second, with a shot barely grazing him. "Alright! That sniper is prone, so it'll be hard to hit him. Just stop him from aiming and we'll be fine!"

"Okay." Frost took out her Marksman Rifle. "What's he using?"

"It's an Anti-Materiel rifle, you losers!" The sniper shouted. He had a rough voice, nothing like a gremlin's. "You drop your weapons and I might let you live!"

Soren fired a burst of shadow shots in the Sniper's direction. "The hell I will!"

Frost aimed her rifle in that same direction and started opening fire. *bang bang bang, pew pew!*

*phiw* "Argh!" A bullet hit Soren in the chest, despite only his head and arms sticking out of cover. He dropped his handgun as he fell to the floor lifelessly.
Soren was killed.

No! I'm...
Frost fired a burst of rounds, then went back to cover.

*phiw, bl-*
A mine near Frost that she didn't notice exploded, knocking her away. She dropped her rifle.

She slowly stood up, and she saw a cloaked knight masking his face in front of her. "Stand up, you."

"Ugh..." Frost stood up and backed away from the rogue knight. "Why are doing this?"

"I'm not here to answer your questions." Frost noticed the Knight's sniper rifle behind him, as he pulled out a Dread Venom Striker. "No. Not that, I'm just testing to see if you'll live another day... Or die now."

Frost reluctantly pulled out her Shocking Edge. "You're a monster."

I'm probably just a bad controller :3

Well, this rogue knight seems pretty serious, and a shocking edge is likely no match for a dread venom striker. You can only defend for so long, so I'm fairly sure running is the only sound optio- wait, he has a sniper. If it were up to me, I'd say Frost is pretty much screwed, so I'll take a chance and fight.

Frost readied her blade as the sniper stood casually.

“Come on then. Attack already.” The sniper said.

Frost swung forward with her sword in a stabbing motion, but the sniper dodged it and dashed behind her. “Too slow.”

“Wha?” The sniper kicked Frost's legs out from under her and grabbed her sword hand.
No! I can't…!

“Goodbye.” He then quickly ran her through with his sword, with the time seeming to slow down for just a brief second.

He turned around and put his sword away. “Hmph.”

No… someone… please help me.
The sniper left, leaving three dead knights behind him.

We'll be back. You can count on that.

Well then, that was interesting. I can now disable the gas for now.
After pushing a few buttons, the nearby fans turned on. Soon, all the gas in the area was repelled.

The captain walked outside the booth. “Okay, gas is clear. Alex, Nick. You can take off your masks now.”

Alexandra was the second operative. She took off her mask. “Whew! Thanks!” she had long blonde hair tied back in a ponytail, with a cheery face.

Nick had some dark brown hair, and was a little sleepy. He looked like he had somewhat of a forced smile. “Nice work, Captain Jeff.”

Jeff sighed. He had lighter hair than Nick, and looked real serious. “It’s not over yet. Stand by while I contact Kora. Or… change your armor if it makes you feel better.”

He activated his earpiece as his allies left to change their gear. “Kora, do you copy?”

”Loud and clear. Did you receive those coordinates?”

“Yes. I’m sending them to you right now.”

”Excellent work, Jeff. Can you search the floor and check for anything else?”

“Okay. Will do.” Jeff turned off his earpiece as his team returned. “Okay team, we gotta search the area for anything of interest.”

“You got it.” Alex replied.

Nick yawned. “I dunno about you guys, but i’m getting kinda sleepy.”
I am getting drowsy too, actually.

“Alright. We’ll set up camp in the control booth for now and rest for a few hours.”

-----
Everyone was sitting around a campfire made in the control booth, with the door open to prevent suffocation and to detect approaching enemies.

“Okay, so before we start the operation, I got plenty of details that are not necessary for you to know, but they might help. What should I start with?”

None of the team members are equipped with shields or battle sprites.
Jeff is wearing a Black Chapeau with a Cool Comm Unit and raised N.V.G.s attached(whether you think that's possible or not). His armor is a Cool Flak Jacket with an Azure Guardian Crest.
Jeff wields a ‘Sparklite Carbine’ and an Ascended Calibur.

Alexandra is simply wearing a pair of raised glass goggles. Her armor is Firefly Guerrilla Armor with a Predator Crest and Heavy Munitions pack.
Alex wields a ‘Welding Carbine’ and a Silent Nightblade.
She also has a Southern accent.

Nicholas is wearing a Mighty Cobalt Helm with a Polar Scarf. His armor is Azure Cobalt Armor.
Nick wields a Mega Magnus and a Khorovod.

Nick has the highest possible health.

Everyone settled down. They probably had a long day ahead of them.

"Ooh, you want to hear a story about one of my amazing adventures?" Alex asked.

"I dunno. Maybe. Hey Nick, do you have any stories?" Jeff said.

Nick scratched his chin. "Errr... yeah. I got one."
Oh jeez, do I really have to pick a story?

Jeff facepalmed. "I didn't become a captain of a squad just to listen to campfire stories."

"Pick anyway! And they're not your regular camping story, it's a quote legendary war story!" Alex said back.

"It seems less legendary than I was hoping for when you insert quotation marks into it." Jeff said. "But fine. I will listen to one of your stories. Maybe two, if I feel like it."

“Nick, you start.” Jeff said.

“Aww, no fair.” Alex said like a kid. “My story would’ve been way cooler!”

Jeff sighed. “Probably exaggerated.”

Nick cleared his throat. “Okay, so I used to be a captain of my own squad some time ago. I led a group of 4 to go get some recipes from Basil in the clockworks in Tier 3. One of which was named Frost. Now this girl was a little… strange. For one, she looked like she was about 12, and she was Rank 9-1. But despite her high rank she used a Shocking Edge and a Spitfire.”
Isn’t that the person from the security footage?

--Loading--
(“For some reason, people kept claiming that frost was this super deadly assassin that was trained to kill as a child. Though, obviously none of that was true. I do wonder where they got those rumors from.”)

They were now on Depth 19, with a bunch of zombies between them and Basil. “Okay, team. This should be easy. Kirk, Frost, Vince, watch yourselves.”

“Psssh. I can take care of myself just fine!” Vince said confidently.

Kirk sneered at Vince in response. “Yeah right, you think you can kill more zombies than I can?”

“You’re on!” The two pulled out their elemental brandishes and ran towards a pack of zombies.

Nick sighed. Typical lollygagging business. He turned his head to Frost, who just stood behind Nick the whole time. “Uhh… why are you just standing there?”

She looked at him, but didn’t respond.
How did you become a Champion with that attitude?

“Okay then… Frost?” Nick turned towards the zombies that his other squadmates were cutting up.

That kind of implies that she should go help. I mean, we know she's not going to die since she has to (literally) live to die another day.

"In most situations, attacking enemies before they attack you is the best. The best defense is a good offense." Nick said.

"The other way around sounds the same." Frost said, slowly walking towards the zombies until she was at maximum handgun range, then started popping shots into them.
("She was effortlessly attacking enemies, by that, I mean that she was hardly even trying to do anything useful.)
However, Vince and Kirk were destroying every zombie in sight. "Haha! Too slow, kid!"

Nick ran forward to the group. "Please, let me show you how it's done." He charged up an attack, and pounded a group of three zombies, skyrocketing all of them. While they were airbourne, he shot two of them with his Mega Magnus, reducing two of them into dust. Then, he slashed the last zombie as it came down. "Too easy."

"Eh, I think that might've been... a little too flashy." Kirk commented.

Nick crossed his arms and sighed. "Pfft, I can do whatever I want. People slide off of elevator and nobody minds."

"I'm bagging more of them, Kirk! Better hurry if you're thinking that you might have a chance of beating me at this!" Vince, yelled.

>"This isn't a competition."
>"I need more coffee."
>"Better hurry along, Kirk."

Except Frost, I guess.

She's not going to die anyways.
