Has anybody studied how material drop rates are affected by depth and stratum?
For example, are you more likely to get a 5* material at, say, depth 27 compared to depth 24? Or are the drop rates the same for an entire stratum?

I have not.
I hypothesize that depth does influence (since it influences crowns/heat), but the relative increase would not encourage farming difficult to access depths (simply because D24 from missions are quick to farm).
If this question is related to getting the book of dark rituals (D19 mission or D23 mission), I'd recommend looking at the status and how that would slow you down more than the depth.
Thanks for your replies.
Yeah, this is about the book of dark rituals. I've been farming Weight of Darkness and Alone in the Dark, and I've found roughly 40 black kats and still no book. I've read about people farming hundreds of black kats on those levels with no success, so I'm just thinking about other strategies.
The Silver Pawn gate has a candlestick at D26 and two Dark City levels at D27 and D28. All of those levels have plenty of kats. If the chance of finding a 5* material is much higher at those depths compared D19 or D24, then it might be worthwhile to farm black kats there... The problem is that you have to run through a bunch of irrelevant levels just to reach that point.
It's probably not a better strategy, but it is something I am considering.
I found a book during the very first black kat event back in 2013, but I quit SK for 3 years and sold my BKC before I left. I kind of regret that now.
Actually, I just noticed that "An Occurrence at Owlite Keep" has a Scarlett Fortress on D25 and Candlestick at D26. Maybe I'll try farming those for a while. Lots of kats on both of those levels, and I only have to run through a graveyard to get there.
Don't farm the mission "An Occurrence at Owlite Keep". The scarlet fortress depth kats dont have a chance of becoming a black kats (unless they changed it since I did my study conclusions, data -- all 3 BKs were from "random monster boxes").
I haven't done the testing, but I suspect that "Dark City" depths fall into the same category as "Scarlet Fortress" - where most of the kats (if any) won't change into BKs.
Also, worth noting...
"I've read about people farming hundreds of black kats on those levels with no success, so I'm just thinking about other strategies."
Yeah, I'm one of those people. Total count is at approximately 300-400 across all events. I've been in parties where 3 other players have gotten a book.
Cheshireccat worked on finding the rates of books and BKs. His data suggests 97% chance of having a book after 968 BK encounters.
Disclaimer: All this data was collected back in 2014. Actual rates may have been tweaked.

Oh, thanks for the info. =) I ran that mission a bunch of times yesterday and was wondering why I never seemed to get a Black Kat on Scarlett Fortress.
Welp, guess I'm going back to Weight of Darkness, Alone in the Dark, and Purr Terror.
I cannot recall ever seeing such a study.
If anyone has ever studied it, a good guess would be Skepticraven or maybe Cheshireccat.
