Some weird monster behaviour...

Kats

They don't focus on a player like the rest of the monsters but rather attack whoever is closest, even if the dash has already been done, they'll attack whoever is closest to the end point of the dash line this can be very annoying when you're trying to lure them away from certain places.

Oilers

They follow you even when you dash or use shadow cloak. Toxigels do this as well and it's so annoying, you just can't escape from them, it's near impossible especially cause they'll follow you all the way across the map on fire and you'll just keep getting damage and getting exposed.

Devilites

They sometimes attack while moving and sometimes even attack nothing, just throw something in the air when they can't even see you and it'll just happen to hit you. This is so annoying considering they always appear in massive groups and can wipe you out pretty quickly.

Are these bugs? Should I move this thread to the bug section?

Thoughts?

devilites and timing

Around 2012 or 2013, I experienced a huge change in the timing of the game. I don't know whether it was caused by an update to the Spiral Knights application, increased latency to the servers, a software upgrade on my computer, or what.

The change especially affected my shielding. Before the change, I could block devilite projectiles with my shield. After the change, this was impossible, because the projectile would hit before my shield could activate. The solution was better dodging of course.

The change also meant that I had to be more conservative in interrupting monsters. Before the change, my Final Flourish would often interrupt devilites a split second before they attacked. After the change, they interrupted me instead.

So I don't know the answer to your question, but my sense is that the game's timing is no longer exactly as it was originally designed, and this might explain some of your observations, especially about devilites.

I'd be disappointed, if I weren't still amazed that I can play a real-time game with someone on the opposite side of Earth.

ooh, this is a fun topic

Okay, so I've adopted strategies for dealing with Kats and Devilites, and they actually work super well.
Rocket Hammer+Kat: When a Kat dashes at you, use the Hammer's second-swing dash and go in the same direction as the Kat. If you did it right, your hammer dash will collide with the Kat multiple times, effectively killing it instantly.
Any single-shot gun charge attack+Devilite: I use the Iron Slug for these guys a lot. They like dodging bullets, and while your first instinct would be to AutoTarget them head on, do not do this. Instead, aim your charge shot to the right or left of them, where you know they won't be. They'll dash into the bullet, and if they're facing you and you're using a Magnus line, they'll take tremendous damage.

on-topic?

Maybe Zero-Chill will appreciate your tactical suggestions, but maybe not. I interpreted her/his post to be more like "Is this behavior intentional?" than "I need advice".

oh right, sorry

Yeah i kinda went off on a tangent, sorry.
Don't have any other info to add besides this: Kats will whip around a player using the rocket hammer when they're on the third swing due to always trying to attack from the back of a player. It doesn't happen often, and the timing has to be precise, but it seems at least a little relevant.

somewhat

I believe the kat behavior is intentional, and the oiler/quicksilver one to be an unintended byproduct of introducing cloaking mechanics into the game (oilers would crowd dead bodies in the past, which seemed to be intentional, but this can only be the case with an enemy who continues targeting the player after their death) - you'll notice that oilers don't actually attack you while you're cloaked, but instead just follow you, making them not too large of a threat while cloaked unless they're already on fire.

The devilite behavior does seem to be unintentional. In fact, lichen styled enemies have the same issue - sometimes they'll keep moving while mid-attack, which causes their attack to be impossible to avoid beyond shielding. Since these enemies do not have a unique walking + attacking animation (and the fact that no enemy has a walk + attack animation unless its attack moves it 100% of the time) I can only assume this to be a glitch.

I tried posting a somewhat related post in Bugs a while back.

I don't know if this sort of thing is going to be fixed anytime soon, but having enemies move around while charging their attacks is a real pain and doesn't seem like it should actually happen.

Sorry for leaving the thread, couldn't log on the forums for some time.

Yep, it's almost impossible to not get hit close-range when facing devilites.

Actually kats are pretty easy to deal with, I've been farming candlestick keeps like a mad man the last katalysmic confrontation with an alt by having 2 SK windows open at the same time I noticed this weird behaviour that the kat after dashing aiming at me if my alt is near it'll aim the next attack for it instead even though I was so careful to draw attention from every monster by an arcana bullet. Whatever I did it always wen for my alt when it was nearer than me. As for tips for dealing with kats I can help you more than you can help me actually I've studied their AI carefully so that I could run candlestick keeps with my alt in about 3 minutes (more or less) most of the time without getting my alt killed. Firstly, kats aren't affected by knockback which makes them pretty fast to kill with WRH or cutter-line weapons they aren't affected much by knockback bombs as well like crystal-line bombs or nitronome (ID and BAB will still knock them pretty far away though, they're more resistant to fire than most other monsters as we'll, shock pretty much renders them harmless IMO.

@#6

I know, that post is the thing that influenced me to write this in the first place.

One more thing I'd like to add is that shorly after you lose a monster's attention by dash or cloak then come back while they're walking they'll usually walk backwards facing you and attack while walking. This applies to most monsters but most noticeable on kats and devilites which is why they're considered pretty annoying.

Thanks for your replies, everyone ^vvvv^

Yep, they can follow you from the start of the level till the end even if you're sooo far away, dashing or even cloaked... They'll ALWAYS find you.
