Has anyone done the study of weather or not it's faster to grind crowns with FSC to get elites or if its faster to speedrun RT or some other mission?
Best Elite Orb Method
Edit: Looks like Crispy-Nightmares posted at the same time as me. You can ignore this post.
Imho, you'd need a lot of luck for RT to be better than FSC for Elite Orbs. Especially right now, with prices around 100E:6000cr. Including Vana tokens, you're getting like 11-12k cr per FSC run, which is nearly 200E. So you have enough for x3 Elite Orbs after just 2 FSC runs. Excluding Vana tokens, it's like 3 FSC runs, so 1.5 hours. Obviously some people can do it even faster than that, but I find 30 minutes per FSC is a comfortable pace.
Not to mention the extras like Radiants and heat...
I agree with Crispy-Nightmares's conclusion (although I haven't checked all of their math). Your overall strategy should be to farm crowns. On those rare occasions, when you happen to have enough Orbs already, you should be pleasantly surprised.
Isn't there a reasonable way to get orbs without grinding the same boss over and over and over (or spending IRL money)? What about the clockworks?
You don't have to spend any in-real-life money. You don't need to grind a single boss over and over again.
You simply need to acquire crowns --- by any means you prefer --- buy energy with those crowns, and buy orbs with that energy. Your crowns could be acquired in the Arcade, in the rank missions, via merchanting, or however you like.
If you want to casually acquire them, I recommend doing the Tier 2 versions of danger missions, if only once day. I’ve used an alt access them the last 4 days, and I’ve gotten 3 orbs for 4 runs. I wouldn’t recommend this for getting them quickly, but I’m probably going to continue doing it because it’s a good break from FSC and it’ll allow me to have them lying around for when I need them.
On average it's about 6000 Crowns per 100 Energy.
So work out the math for Elite orbs : ( is it 700 Energy?) So that would be about 42,000 Crowns ? Not sure though.
While the first math response is close and comes to a good conclusion... one should also consider spending crowns from IMF on orbs as well. I think I should post some corrections/adjustments.
Also, for completeness, here is a link to the Lancer Knights Data Page
First, the correction:
Lancer knights lists orb chances at 0.5% for red or green treasure chests. While this is good, it's not exactly fair for some missions...
Green boxes are actually about 0.36% and red boxes are about 0.94%. You can find my data here. This actually raises IMF's chances because it always contains 8 red boxes (with the standard 15% chance of any green box being red). IMF has 24 (green or red) + 8 red boxes total, which gives an overall rate of 0.57% (or ~1 orb every 5 runs instead of the 1 orb every 6 runs using 0.5%).
I will note that my data is a bit sparse and suggests that depth itself affects these chances.
Lancer Knights also gives an average elite orb for IMF estimate of about 1 every 4 runs, so we'll go with their data.
Ironclaw Munitions Factory/Built to Destroy nets you ~2900crn + 0.26 elite orbs
The King of Ashes/Vana nets you ~9500crn + 0 elite orbs
(Note: this ignores tokens/mats/other possible crown liquidating assets from both, because that only makes a difference for a large number of runs -- if, for example, you happened to want to craft all 72 5* pieces of gunner armors... ).
Elite orbs are 400E for a pack of 3, which is 22k-26kcrn (at 5.5k-6.5kcrn/100e)
You need to do about 8-9 IMF runs or 2-3 KoA runs to strictly buy all the orbs.
If you happen to run IMF, you'll probably also get 3 free orbs to craft a new item for free about every 11-12 runs.

The takeaway is the same - almost no orb is worth trying to obtain directly as a drop, but instead is much more efficient to buy from the supply depot using crowns (traded for energy).
The only orb that is not worth buying from the supply depot is the 5* eternal orb... but that's mostly because radiants are the bottleneck and if you don't have enough of them upgrading the weapon too early can be considered a downgrade until it is heated to level 9 or 10.
This true way, and now CE u can buy for 5200 -> 5600 cr per 100ce, if u pass vanaduke 10 times are 30 seals and u can collect 89000 cr approximately with total = 119000 CR -> 2100 ce
good question - bad math incoming (gonna neglect the treasure box type for simplicity):
using Lancer Knightz data of 0.5% chance for orb:
Roarmy:
40 boxes (if ur lucky)
10 minutes (for casul player)
bad statistics -> 200 boxes = 5 runs = 50 minutes = 1 orb
gud statistics -> 200 boxes = 5 runs = 50 minutes = [1-(0.995^200)] = 63.3% chance of getting 1 orb
bettr statistics ->920 boxes = 23 runs = 230 minutes = [1-(0.995^920)] = 99% chance of getting 1 orb
for 3 orbs at 99% chance:
920*3 = 2760 boxes = 69 runs (LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL) = 690 minutes = 11.5 hrs = kill me pls i have nightmares of ironclaw munitions factory
Vanaduke:
~10k cr per run (including tokens)
~6500 cr per 100 E
20 minutes (for casul plauer)
3 orbs = 400 E = 26k cr = 2.5 runs = 50 mins = ik ik u cant get 1.5 tokens, but mathematically this is accurate
Vana all the way bb
