Zosu, your ragebait is becoming boring now. It's not even believable anymore.

As this will likely be one of the very last, time we see this

"As this will likely be one of the last updates, before the game dies of lack of funding, it would be nice to keep all weapons how they were originally intended for the last months."
Zosu: You are a terrible Fearmonger... because No one is afraid of You, You have proved Yourself Delusional when trying to portray the most simple of arguments... Your threats are meaningless, and at this point You "Can't be kind" because it will look disingenuous. The only thing that ended in Spiral knight is Your credibility and You did that on Your own.

Important maters, Kinda

Important maters, Kinda Maybe:
Cutters looks and sound like a Hunting Tool... a hunting tool is not a general thing.. is created specifically so Piercing and Shadow damage Added Sounds proper, now we have seeing the lack of Bonus Damage: Family. Is this the new direction with weapons, Not be family centric but Weakness centered? I Can't say I'm against. Looking for more.

Now that being said... Could Spur line cover the other 2 families Missing (I know sounds confusing right now, I spoke of weakness and went the other direction). Since there is no Elemental damage. I'm not asking to Brandishificate the Spur. The Spur is not a hunting weapon, It Could be a Sword that Since the need to repel Zombies and Robots (things You do not Hunt, conceptually we Could "hunt fiends, and Wolvers", but, we Defend from Waves of Zombies and Robots) gets Added Shock status, keeping the type of damage, because "It was the swords we had at hand when the Wave clashed against, and asking the wind for a chance to Defend our home, the wind answer."
...with lighting.
We have now an anti-Horde fast weapon, since Shock by nature is Anti-Hordes, and on a fast wide slash weapon we get the most of it. Yes shock would be almost meaningless to Beast and Gremlins Damage wise, but the effect of it remains usable.

Gran Faust and Divine Avenger need some look into it, being heavy blades (Not super-heavy like Troikas), and Being Diametrically Different, they Could Fulfill 2 different Roles but not thru Basic-attacks those remain the same, But thru their Charge attacks... One is an Avenging Wrath, the other, A Bargain So Foul, everyone should be afraid.

Troikas... are a (super-heavy) Orbital Strike... Respectable.

Looking for the next batch.

Nice

Good job GH bringing the orbitgun and mixmaster in line with the free-to-play mandolin. Things had to be equalised to remove unfair advantages one way or another.

Yes, there was also the option to make mandolin overpowered as well by giving it the old non "modernised" bullets, but we can't complain too much here.
The devs will obviously pick the scenario where they "modernise" things instead of giving all SK's playerbase OP guns that trivialise certain enemies.
(btw the guns were fine before because very few people could afford to use them, thats why they didnt nerf em)

But anyways, keep up the great work GH!

Coming back to the debate

I want to quickly interject here with some extra input.

While the DVS' old identity was cool, as a weapon, it's hard to call it anything other than subpar. I posted this on The Arcade's Discord, but I want to throw the numbers on the board:

NEW DVS
against resisted:
max DMG: 139, 80
default: 95, 61
against neutral:
max DMG: 219, 118
default: 143, 89
against weak:
max DMG: 284, 166
default: 201, 119

OLD DVS
max dmg: 169, 86
default: 107, 61

(Tested in T3 guild training hall, first number is the main swing and second number is the ghost swing)

All of these numbers are pre-poison. The only instance where DVS performs worse with split damage is against fiends and undead, and the damage loss is so small. A 12% decrease in damage on a fast hitting weapon is a fair tradeoff for 33% increase in neutral and 87% increase in effective damage, before damage boosts are applied.

I want to make it known that I absolutely adore the cutter line. Rocket Hammer is my favorite weapon in the game, but cutters have always been a solid second pick for me. Truth be told though, I always used DVS since WHB's gimmick was not good enough for general play. As such, I do have an emotional attachment to normal damage DVS, as I believe many others in this thread have noted. I believe many others came to the same conclusion I did, which is why no one is claiming WHB being changed to piercing will ruin its niche of "also being good against the random slimes and constructs in wolver dens" despite that being the main argument for its existence since the game began.

That being said, an emotional attachment to using DVS on fiends shouldn't hold the weapon back from being an actually viable weapon. While I'd much prefer a split shadow damage cutter in a new line (sleep shadow cutter would be a great new weapon to use Zee cores for, and would be an excellent status to pair with the attack style), if that's not on the table, I'd rather have DVS be split damage than to stay as a hipster weapon that's only as strong as the weapon you combo it with. Cutters already are a high risk weapon to use, a high reward just makes them actually a viable choice instead of being meme weapons. If normal damage is to be maintained, it should get at least a 20% damage increase so that it's more usable. Keeping it exactly as is will solidify its position as the "guys I swear it's good" and then not actually doing anything ever weapon.

Slicer guns are the other big conversation starters here. Outside of being bugged on the preview server, they are absolutely the right step forward. Guns have distinct strengths and weaknesses, the primary weakness is that certain enemies dodge the projectiles. The dodges add to the gameplay cycle, and because the bullets return back to you (and return stronger!) you can manipulate enemy AI to get hit with the more powerful bullet. This gives a level of skill expression to the weapons that genuinely makes them fun to master.

As a side note, ever since I got my orbitgun I've loved the concept of a boomerang bullet. The first time I ran FSC with it, my entire perspective on FSC changed, much like how I felt first getting my rocket hammer. As a reminder, the hammer is my favorite weapon in the game. The orbitgun was so fun, but also, pretty lame to use efficiently. The slicer line has been exciting me because of the potential for the changes to come to the orbitgun, and I would be pretty annoyed if we kept a legacy weapon OP just so someone can bypass established game mechanics instead of learning a new weapon. These changes are mandatory for the weapons to become available in mass to the general public, so I really hope we'll see some craftable slicer guns in the future as craftable versions of mixmaster and orbitgun.

That being said, and I believe this is the root of the DVS debacle, could we see about having damage types and statuses be more varied? Shock/fire + elemental, and freeze/poison + shadow are severely overdone at this point. I'd love to see more weapons that use their statuses as an advantage to their damage type/attack style. Freeze/normal blast bombs, shock/Shadow flourish, and poison/elemental slicer are good examples of uncommon pairings that would spice up weapon choices.

@Fangel

I think part of the reason why the Cutter issue is so split is because the WHB actually gets updated to do what it's designed to do.... it would be like making the Cold Iron Vanquisher or Heavy Deconstructor become Elemental type, or the Amputator becoming Shadow.... it's literally just getting better at the job it was assigned... even moreso for this particular line because it's often something a lot of players try out when they're newer because it's got a fun playstyle.

Finally getting that fun playstyle and having it actually deal damage feels good....

And then we have the DVS, which never advertised itself any particular way, in fact it felt more like a general purpose weapon or something that was designed to be strong against specific individual species of monsters rather than entire families...

If DVS ends up shadow it's just going to end up at the bottom of the barrel while no longer being unique...

reading isn't hard

"it's just going to end up at the bottom of the barrel while no longer being unique"

You should try actually reading numbers people are posting. It's not hard. DVS on Preview trades an extremely slim loss of effectiveness versus two families in exchange for a massive improvement in functionality against everything else. It's literally the opposite of what you're claiming. It's getting pulled OUT of the bottom of the barrel and turned into a viable alternate choice to the braindead numbness of brandish spam. Are you even logging into preview to test this at all?

It's not a "fine generalist" on Live, that's just lying. It's noobtrap junk. Claiming otherwise is very dishonest.

I would also mention that the "cutter issue" isn't really "so split" - there's just an extreme fringe of vocal detractors who are simply not logging in to preview at all and closing their minds to any actual testing feedback. A simple poll reveals the absurdity of the divide:

I would push the current preview DVS to Live. If you're going to commit to making balance changes, there will be times when you can't make everyone happy. The overly vocal fringe of non-testers, such as they are, will get over themselves. Everyone else will be happy to have a new shadow sword option that isn't just stale brandish spam.

You are right about it, Retrofit

may I change a thing there?
just stale brandish Charge spam.

I saw a post the other day in Chat that said. Before tying remember this changes are about the well state of the game:
Is NOT what I feel, NOT what I want, NOT what I don't want.
IS what THE GAME needs to prosper, for the new players to enjoy, for the player base to use.

The changes to the Cutter, the troikas and the 1° draft on the Gran Faust are good examples of changes needed for the Player base to use Them... not for the Complacent. For All if we choose to do so. We can always choose not to use them, but remembering that Each One of Us is only One and we can only speak for Ourself, when we write why we Use or not something.
