The best handgun is the one that helps you in ways that your other weapons can't.
How many weapon slots do you have, and what do you use in them?

There is no best handgun
There is no best handgun unless you're comparing something like a Blaster to its upgraded form. Some of the more commonly used guns are the Alchemers (Voltech, Firotech, Shadowtech and the ice one whose name slips me. I don't think many people use the Prismatech), the Antigua, and the Blaster. Some that you may want to stay away from, not because they're bad but are more situational or harder to use, are the Autogun and Magnus. We also had two new guns added into the game, the Pulsar and Catalyzer which seem pretty decent.

I chose a Valiance because I wanted just a single handgun (for now, at least). The Valiance has "normal" damage - which while it doesn't have any monsters weak to it, it also doesn't have any resistant to it - the highest rate of fire among normal-type damage handguns, and allows you to always be moving, even if it's at a reduced rate.
If you want the best handgun to cover all circumstances, I think the Valiance is it. If you want something more specific, then you're going to need a lot more than one handgun.

Best is only relative to what you are shooting. Ideally you'll want a gun or 2 for each creature type. Shadow, Elemental, Normal, Piercing.
