Is Spiral Knights really a sustainable economic model?

"in-game advertisements during loading screens, as proposed by Tennispro in Sinxeno's discussion contest."
I don't think there's that much money to be made from advertisements. It might be interesting if they offered to let you turn ads at the loading screens off or on, and if you have them on, you can use elevators for 9 energy rather than 10, for example. I don't know if that would on net gain or lose them revenue.
"some out-of-game market as an alternate source of income, like plushies."
If there's money to be made doing that, then Three Rings would do that in addition to however they make money in-game, not instead of it.
Why, after you've been schooled by no less than 3 different people on business economics, can you not see that putting energy into the in-game economy FOR FREE (without the spending of dollars) reduces OOO's income?
Sure, your argument is that more people will play the game. Great, but you'll need a whole lotta new people to offset the huge reduction in energy demand from giving away mist energy for no $$.
and the whole "basil sells mist tanks" idea is nothing but obfuscating the problem. It's still putting energy into the economy without paying dollars, just not as much.
Cutting into your only source of income by giving away mist energy tanks is an economic disaster, and hoping for enough new players to offset the huge costs while doing so is just wishful thinking.
Once they stop having to worry about a long-term, stable source of income, they can divert their attention away from how to make more money and towards how to make the game better, even at a slight relative loss. I agree with Ren that they need to devise strategies that will keep players around, and with guyjin about keeping players buying CE, but with the looming potential for financial failure gone, they'll have much clearer heads to attend to other matters.
For some of the posters here, how about, as an alternative to shooting down everyone's ideas with bitterness or pointing out the flaws in everyone's plan, you explain why your idea is better?
"Sometimes I think Three Rings should make it so that you can't trade crowns for crystal energy at all. That would, of course, make a lot of players worse off and no one better off, so they shouldn't actually do that. But it would stop this whining from people who don't like the exchange rate."
Hahaha, I new you were trolling. 0/10, I'm out of this troll thread. Enjoy your unstable economy.
Edit: I just realized that Spiral Knights has over a million players. And you guise still think that a Mist Tank NPC will make Three Rings go bankrupt.
