1.everyone always has a little lag. i have great connection(i can load a webpage in about 2.5 seconds with my computer) and i STILL get lag. it's very annoying OOO doesn't purposefully do that. unless if they wasted 500$ trying to bring sega's name down MORE. and anyways don't try to tell me i never said that because you said, do some players have internet connection advantages if they bought CE?-intentional-.
2. cry sum moar is not the answer to this discussion
3. people only ragequit because they are either bored of the game or don't liek the updates
4. everyone has these problems not jsut you and i don't hear THEM complaining about it.
5. do not say "well its hard for you to udnerstand bcuz you have a good internet connection"
6. if you don't like the game DON'T PLAY IT.
7. if you want to blame or ask OOO for answers post it in suggestion or contact support.
8. bad servers or lack of them? there are about 70-99 servers so the lack thing just isn't going to work. each server has about 150-200 people in all (haven bazzar arcade clockworks) unless if it's an empty server.
9. to decrease lag have you tried putting it on the lowest graphics possible and have nothing open during playing besides the game?
10. i have met TONS of people who are maxed out 5 star uv and cool costumes who have never spent any money on the game.
11. the only thing i can agree to on this in a way is they purposefully put lags on vanaduke. everyone knows that.
12. OOO doesn't take a look at the forums except to change the topic to a diffrent discussion if needed. i've seen tons of bad language on the forum. whatg does OOO do about it? nothing. so if they dont pay attention to that what makes you think they'll pay attention to this. also how many suggestions have you seen come true on the forums?(besides pvp that was on the beta people just didnt know about it)
13. if you really care about this game so much delete stuff on your computer you don't want to decrease it.
14. and do you truly think that OOO is going to pay attention to 1 mad player with 1 topic in thread with mostly all of the comments disagring with him?
15. OOO already has enough hate mail about this. no need to add to it.
This is embarrassing for both the delevopers and the players
Ok, Lag can be reduced.. But some of it may require you to spend money.
Turning off as many programs as you can is a good place to start. Lowering the settings will also help. If need be get More memory or a better PC. (The first Money costing tip.)
Downloads will hurt your connection. I rarely have a online game and BBC iPlayer running at the same time.
Avoid playing when Family are using the net. If they're download it's almost hurts just the same. As a UK player, I often play at 2 am, I'm the only one up, but I often end up on US servers, and what gains I get at home, is lost going across the Atlantic.
Play enough you can Predict Attacks and avoid getting hit or take enough damage to faint often.
As someone who plays TF2, I find that most lag is manageable, heck, I know that one team has a sniper who barely breaks 300ms and he's pro, and one of the Best players outhere.
But when your entire party is complaining about it, and you're stuck below a level on the way to level 12. That's bad: http://steamcommunity.com/id/MikeSharpeWriter/screenshot/558663568077450086
"Threatening with your wallet is the best way to be ignored and not be taken seriously."
Sad but true, that's nice but since the silent group is the one that people discount because they never present themselves it doesn't really make a difference unless everyone does it... and there are enough people with oddball opinions (not saying anything in particular atm) that even a large amount of people refusing to pay for something could be ignored because a few people are.
It does seem like lag can be a big problem at times : /
Struggled with lag for a while, now seems to be smooth after updating flash on my mac. Could just be a mac issue, i guess... but cleared it up nicely.
1)agreed
2)agreed
3)agreed
4)Not complaining is the worst thing to do.The job hours were reduced to 8 because people fed up with it and protested not because they kissed the employers bottoms
5)I have a better connection and would not say that
6)I like the game,i just want it to improve
7)I will keep this in mind
8)And how many of them are in Europe?
9)I can play crysis at 1920 x 1200 4xAA,16xAF with an ultra high config and have over 60fps.I don't think that this has to do with my PC
10)I am almost level 5 too and haven't spend any money.I don't use the lag as an excuse for not playing well,because...i CAN play well still
11)have not played vanaduke yet,but i will soon find out
12)Well creating a topic does not take effort,i made this and will be happy if they see it and acknowledge the problem. If they don't i don't lose anything
13)I didn't get this
14)Well the problem is real and exists,if they don't want to fix it i don't have any problem.Never given them a cent anyway
15)That's good, the more they know about the game issues the better
@BigNutter: That is a silly, silly screenshot. Did Tom Cruise come save you?
@Bushwhacker: Lots of people threaten to pull their money out. They never do.
@VodkaGR1: Yes yes yes. You can play other games and it's fine. The point has been made many many times that performance on other games is NOT comparable with performance on this game. Crysis is NOT a massively multiplayer online game with 100% of its players connecting to one server that is very far away.
I've requested help twice, and both times a GM stepped in, looked at the server, shrugged, and said that it was on my end.
If you want the issue to be known, open the gear menu, click Support, click Request Support, and fill out a ticket. A GM will be by and if there is some horrible error on the server side, he will know about it.
Also: "Problem on your end" does NOT mean "your computer is garbage", it also covers "anything from a microwave running on the first floor to a spiderweb in your router to meteoric ash interfering with your wifi to whatever the heck else could happen".
Dont complain, move to South east asia and you will know whats lag *shield up, monster attacks 1 sec later, Klipwc died*
@caseyweederm Nah.. I had to Alt-F4 after I when down some floors on my PSP Disgaea Item World. I love Raiding stuff and powering up stuff at the same time.
It's also not the first time it happened http://steamcommunity.com/id/MikeSharpeWriter/screenshot/560911634036722...
My isp in AUS internode have hosted MMO for free and have 100+ gaming servers, they provide them for free as part of their service and are known as the best isp for gaming in AUS, so it's not a money issue. It's probably an issue with separating the clockworks and the haven, the games economy wouldn't work if it was AUS only so it'd need to be a global haven with local clockworks.
I hope this game comes to ps3 as sony have AUS and UK servers.
Whoever said "Threatening with your wallet is the best way to be ignored and not be taken seriously." does not understand the basics of capitalism at all.
Again, Toksyuryel. Those people never actually leave.
They just complain loudly and crave attention.
The people who really vote with their wallets just leave, and that is not what is happening here today.
Rest assured, thousands of people are still playing Spiral Knights, despite what this one guy would have you believe.
Raxxok: If the game came to the PS3, it would most likely still be hosted by Three Rings' servers. Steam does the same thing - it's just a different way to connect to the same thing.
As for globalizing servers, how would that work? Hm... There would have to be enough of a demand for it to have an entire standalone server. Perhaps the Australian players would still connect to the American auction house/energy market, but I'm not sure if there would be a way for Australian players and American players to play together unless one jumped to the distant server. That would fragment the in-game community to a degree, although I'm not sure that would matter in a game with a party cap of four.
this thread has quickly devolved into two camps that can't be bothered to listen to each other anymore.
the prosecution, if you will, raises the fair point that this game is quite laggy! i live in japan, have rarely seen more than one bar, and literally never seen three. i used to be constantly (and am still occasionally) hit by projectiles i didn't touch, spikes that had yet to rise and sword swings two squares away from me. whenever i get shocked, i am teleported back a square or so because that's where i actually was when the shock happened. what looks like a safe charge attack can, at the drop of a lag spike, turn into death by being pinned in a corner with too many enemies to shield bash away. it is, at times, maddening. the only reason i don't get hurt as much anymore is that i play overly cautiously to compensate for lag, not because the lag has gotten any better.
the defense argues that the prosecution is asking too much of this small company, questions the defense's internet troubleshooting aptitude, laments the prosecution's tone as being unduly whiny and suggests the prosecution "just suck it up" and adjust their play to compensate for lag.
the one point about which both sides can agree is that this game is fun! the prosecution complains because their fun game is marred by lag, and the defense complains because their fun game is under attack.
i side more or less with the prosecution on this one, and i hope even those who disagree can empathize with my perspective. the reason i play spiral knights--the reason spiral knights is actually the only mmo i've ever played--is because it is an Actual Video Game, in the grand console tradition. in something like WoW, when you enter in combat you surrender the battle to a bunch of predetermined math and focus on using tons of attacks and skills to heal, buff, debuff or damage and turn the battle in your favor. in spiral knights, there's an attack button and a shield button, and the only "skill" is being good at the game. it's awesome! i can't stand mmo's or even diablo where you just click and click and understand taking damage is inevitable. being able to use a shield and your wits to theoretically block and dodge any attack adds so much skill to the game.
this is why lag hurts so much in spiral knights. you can swing away like an idiot in t1 and still do alright, but you will pay for your mistakes in heat and in CE. once you get to late t2 and all of t3, the game requires knowledge and precision. in a lagless world, it would still be difficult to dodge every gun puppy shot in a t3 arena; with this level of lag, it is actually impossible, and players must resign themselves to shielding when they shouldn't have to and taking extra damage. maybe that extra shield use won't matter, but maybe it's the difference between blocking that wolver's third attack and taking shock damage that results in you getting surrounded and slaughtered in the corner.
so the defense tells the prosecution to "suck it up" and adjust their playstyle to compensate for lag. this is a fair point, mainly because it is the only way to do well on t3. but i think the defense should consider:
that OOO probably designed this game in a low-lag environment and set the difficulty accordingly,
that OOO probably understands that it is fair for players who experience horrible lag (even with good connections!) to criticize OOO for the lag that makes SK less fair and less fun than it could be, and
that OOO probably won't get their widdle feewings hurt by such criticisms,
and that they should stop giving people grief for having legitimate complaints.
just my 2cents
I am re-posting this, because I dropped this in a similar thread a month ago. It's a very obvious problem with a very obvious solution.
-----
This is a consistent problem because the game is designed to listen to the server first and not the client.
Meaning you can be moving in a certain direction, and the server will "correct" you.
It happens during combat too, when you will take damage from an attack you very clearly had your shield up in time for, or if you swing at a monster and it cuts right through their body but they simply ignore it as if you never attacked.
It's a big problem, actually, and should be corrected to prioritize the Client. It would improve user-experience.

Well, new servers in Europe would be optimal for many people, I guess. However, this is probably quite expensive. Therefore, I would suggest the introduction of a lag compensation method, as it is used in the Source games like Team Fortress 2. Shortly, this method calculates based on the latency where the player was and what he did from his point of view. For instance, the player's information may be 100 ms in the past because of latency. He will react to the information he sees on his screen. After the server has received the player input, it will then backtrack to the point the point the player is reacting to and calculate hits based on this information.
More info: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Source_Multiplayer_Networking#La...
I have no idea how hard this is to implement. As of now, many players can't play the game as well skillwise as they could, since they are not able to react in time as a matter of principle.
[edit] To the poster above: Yes, listening to the player's POV instead of the server's would work too. However, that makes it quite easy to cheat, I think. I don't know how much of a problem this would be in SK, though.
I live in Asia.
My ping to the server is well over 500.You dont see me complaining now do you?
In fact...I dont lag at all...Yes I do get the occasional lag spike during peak hours and in the last arena of Fsc cuz the file for fire ish big.I spend cash...Hopefully they will put moar servers around but I'm happy with what I have right now.I have a 20 mbps connection and you might say thats why you dont lag as much...Pure b/s.Its about latency/ping.I'm sure OOO has enough cash so your insignificant payment wont make much of a difference to the one million players playing.
@Melizande That violates the fundamental rule of all online applications: never trust the client. If you allow the client to dictate where it is located, it becomes trivially easy to cheat.
An idea I had, to help players visualize their lag, is to display a ghost image of their character that shows where the server thinks they are located. Players can compare this to where their character is to have a clearer picture of how to compensate for the lag they're experiencing at that moment.
@Toksyuryel
I may be wrong but I'm fairly sure that most online games do this nowadays successfully.
I have not rubberbanded in an online game in years....since Diablo II actually.
Borderlands...WoW...TF2/L4D2/Portal 2...Halo PC... EVE Online.
And believe me. I know it's more than likely that every single one of those games utilizes more powerful servers, but at the end of the day there will always always ALWAYS be a discrepancy between client and server by nature. Most of these games probably trust the client.
Excellent and informative posts in the last page, thank you guys for being more mature
Lag compensation as you mentioned would probably do the trick, but i believe that it cannot be implemented after the game is finished. Also, client side detection would allow many cheats and this is not desirable, but since all stats are stored in the server the only thing you could cheat is teleporting or something like that, which still can be prevented
Also,TeejayHira that was some interesting nerdrage ,keep up the good work
i live in the uk, i have no lag usually. you lag is more than likely due to over-loaded local exchanges, i'm lucky with only about 40 people on my exchange.
so if you're looking for lag compensation talk to your telecom company.
number 13 what was meant o be said but got messed up was to decrease lag delete things you don't want/need if you don't want to decrease gameplay.
Melizande, trusting the client is SERIOUSLY BAD NEWS. I doubt any serious programmer would ever resort to that, even accidentally.
VodkaGR1, if the server trusted the client, the client could be tweaked to, say, not take any damage ever. More to the point, many people are all making changes all at once, and it doesn't make sense to send all that information to each client to make decisions. That's what the server is for. Player one is going this way at this rate, player two is shielding and moving in that direction, player three is standing on spikes. The server combines all this, decides each outcome, and then sends that outcome to the clients to display it.
The new pvp is unplayable with an aus ping and those who said there's no lag compensation were right, keep getting stuck in nothing and warped back.
@Caseyweederm,
So you're presuming then that most if not every other online game out there right now is using a vastly better server(s) to run their games, to explain why rubberbanding simply doesn't occur in most online games (that I've played, see above)..
I mean I understand Spiral Knights is considered a "small game", but lets be realistic. How big is the playerbase they're supporting right now? Is it really that small?
If there were one thing I could say to almost everybody on the forums, I'd tell everybody to MAN UP FOR ONCE.
In this context, stop bickering. It doesn't help anything.
Yes, both of you. ALL of you.
