I was thinking of crafting a new set of armor for tier 3, and was wondering if the Mercurial set was any good or not. Is its speed increase noticeable? Does it provide enough defense?
Mercurial Helm and Mail
mercurial mail is good for its looks. Despite recent changes elemental is still a better resist type
Looks really sweet, great costume or something to wear to shock strata.
Someone tested the speed increase by racing across an entire Decon Zone, by the end they were just 3-4 squares ahead of the others. So the speed increase is something that won't be noticed in a typical battlefield.
Thanks for the advice guys, but for a bomb/ sword user like me what type of armor should I go for then.

I'm pretty sure you are referring to my tests (someone else tested arenas), and I seem to recall it was more like 1-2 squares, but I only had the mail, so a full set is probably 3-4 squares.
That said, I've currently been using the full set of mercurial for JK runs. It has normal/piercing, you don't need any resists on the JK levels, and I have UVs/trinkets to cover what I would get from other armor.
Edit: found the tread; http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/15365
I have the mercurial set. The only way I can notice the speed increase is running parallel to another player. You will very gradually overtake them. The weirdest thing about the set is that the speed increase buff has a purple down arrow icon like the "backfire" buffs for fang of vog or Faust, and it shows on the weapon status indicators as well as the whole knight.
Aside from JK runs and the gloaming wild woods it doesnt sound particularly useful. Would I be better off with this? : Grey feather cowl, Grey Owlite shield, Radiant silver mail. So I would have all damage resists and poison, curse, fire plus shock resists.
Sure, covering all the damage types and most statuses should work fine. The only annoyance is that the defense is so spread out that you won't have maximum resistance to any particular thing. If you find a certain damage or status troubling you can always go back and make another piece that will better protect you from that damage.
I can't confirm this as I haven't used it personally, but I read that the movement speed increase is negligible.
