I think, considering the volume of Knights on the Skylark, that the ship was a mobile colony.

Well,
My theory is...
Well, remember at the beginning of the game, your knight crash landed? Perhaps your knight was sent from the Spiral Knights' home planet, and something went wrong and your ship crashed. Otherwise, it would've taken a long time to build Rescue Camp and/or the Arcade (I don't know that much about Haven's history). So since the Spiral Knights found a source of energy, they sent knights to Cradle to assist them in harnessing that power.
And why the Knights where out in space in the first place? For fun or for research. For all we know, the Spiral Knights could be humans in special gear.

there may be many reasons o course many of which include lack of mango's due to overpopulation of coconuts and tomatoes and also that the planet was in the stages of global warming( caused by too many penguins rubbing each other ) any other reasons i have no idea what could get them to leave

Read the Wiki
The Wiki article about the Skylark states that all (or at least most) of the knights got out of the ship using the escape pods you emerge from at the beginning of the game.
The Rescue Camp is very easily set up, using the same escape pods.
If I'm correct, the Arcade was already there, it is now being used by Spiral HQ as a base.
Because the Skylark crashed into Cradle, the ships power core got destroyed and a new one is needed, that's why they set up the research for the Core's energy.
Well they also could just be space traveling for fun or for exploration.
