ACCESSORIES? WHAT?! - Discussion
For folks who think 750 CE is too much, but still want accessories, you know you can trade with other players, and there's an auction house. The prices will be both higher and lower than 750CE.
You might wonder why anyone would sell an accessory for less than 750 CE, since it had to have cost them at least 650 CE (+ 100 mist) to buy a key. Not right now, mind you, but eventually some items will be less than 750 due to less demand for those, and more for the more popular items. Maybe you don't want the lesser items, or maybe you do. I was into flies hats in TF2 long before people started appreciating them more, so I got them relatively cheap. Those unwanted aborted baby accessories one person doesn't want and will sell for cheap can be your treasure.
It won't happen today or tomorrow, but eventually. I'm a free player who only has an hour to play at night, and I have boatloads of CE. I don't see the problem with the price, but if you do, then wait for a good trade/auction.
750 CE is nearly the cost of a 5* item! I can start a guild for cheaper than that! That's 750 CE for a random item, from a list of nearly a hundred items, most of which are unidentified as of now. 300 CE is a much more fair price. That way the accessories are still require a little investment but aren't horribly end-game pointless. Even TF2 (from whom you seem to borrow heavily from now) isn't this bad. For one the items aren't destroyed if you grow tired of them.
In the long run, you only serve to harm yourself with more moves like this. The more you create a rift between F2P and P2P players, the more likely F2P will decide the cost of getting all the things they want is too high and instead just stop playing early on.
I know you need money to survive, but must you nickel and dime us at every turn? May we please have some economic concessions here and there so the game feels affordable instead of more and more like a rip off?
A P2P player since April
INB4 - "You don't need accessories to play the game" I know, but I'm tired of new content being placed on a pedestal which monetarily moves further out of reach all the time.
750 CE is nearly the cost of a 5* item!
Wrong. It's either:
1. at least 4k CE (after unbinding)
2. at least 55,400cr + 1450CE to craft from 2*, ignoring materials
In the long run, you only serve to harm yourself with more moves like this.
Assumptions, assumptions. OOO has surely done their math and this will likely work out for them.
By your "rift" argument, F2P players wouldn't even play Team Fortress 2 because keys cost $2.45.
It would actually be worse in TF2 because many crate items aren't merely cosmetic and any F2P player can whine why that guy has a "Server-Clearing Black Box" (Rocket Launcher)
If keys were really cheap, everyone would be opening lockboxes, everyone would have accessories, and only people in the rescue camp would have any idea what armor without accessories look like.
I was actually looking forward to this update, to the point where I wasn't even mad that my vanaduke fight was interrupted.
I figured, hey, OOO knows what they're doing, and the accessories will be awesome.
I also thought we'd be able to pick/buy our accessories. I later found out that they were randomized when aquired, and I was okay with that, it seemed to keep them rare.
Then I found out the accessories were item drops to boot - as opposed to a shop. Yeah, I was a bit miffed, but it was still understandable, and I was still looking forward to an accessory or two.
But really OOO? Not only having both of the above, but having the boxes require keys, EXPENSIVE ones - especially considering that these are random, unable to be unbound, and can only be destroyed rather than unequipped - after going through what sounds like heck and back again to get one in the first place...
It just made me lose all enthusiasm for this update.
I won't say I'm entitled to get an accessory the way I'd like too, and I won't say you don't know what you're doing, because I don't know how things work up there, but down here, this just looks greedy - and that's dissapointing.
Aside from that though, I'm sure you'll release some great updates later on. Good luck OOO.
It would be nice if the Silver Keys were on the Item Wheel as well. As it stands right now, it's a... "boring" feature. There's nothing of value on it - although I don't doubt more rare items [and perhaps accessories themselves] will be added in the future. At least, I hope so.
Marqui, I wouldn't worry about the rarity of the lock boxes. These lock boxes will turn into a TF2 crate situation in (I would guess) a week or two easily. With the keys costing 750CE (much more than most would spend on a random item that has nothing but a visual effect) there will be an ever increasing number of lock boxes out in the SK world. The fact that everybody will be getting more lockboxes than they are willing to open will just drive the AH price down a ton. Then, in a week or two when lock boxes are in the AH for less than 5k you can easily purchase one whenever you want to gamble on getting an accessory (if you don't already have your own pile of lock boxes just sitting around).
I agree with Replicant that silver keys should be in the prize wheel, even if they are a lot more rare than the boxes themselves. This gives any player a small chance to get a nice prize instead of hearts, vials, 25crowns or a lock box that they will never open because of the price of a key. I think the chance to get a key from the wheel would make players more excited to finish their clockworks.
The sole difference between TF2 and SK is that in TF2 you get free items every 15-75 minutes anyways. Also two tokens and a scrap is not so expensive to try crafting something if you haven't received in a drop already. Having only ever opened one Mann Co. crate I've never had an issue with not having the items I desire.
Maybe I just suck at this game but I struggle to have as successful of a turnover rate in SK without shelling out the dough. Saving up your Cr and converting to CE takes a lot of time an effort, even with FSC. Then there are the recipe and energy markets but I started playing this game to stab things, not specialize in microeconomics.
I've been behind OOO through thick in thin since April (including the infamous crafting update that made 5* items 800CE, a move I supported) but this is the first time I found an update to be really silly. Rarifying 5* items makes sense, silly little accessories that should be for fun should be a bit more prevalent.
PS fair enough on the 5* items costing more than 800 when you factor the 3-4* versions. I still maintain that it costing more than guild creation is silly.
EDIT: I agree with Repicant and Skankingrove. If there was a small chance of getting a key in the prize wheel, it would probably be enough for me to get over all of this. You can wait a while for a key to just happen or if you are impatient you can buy one. I guess I'm mostly just upset that the only option now is to pay out for one.
The option in the bazaar! The preview one at vendors that nobody cares about! Why does nobody seem to understand that?
All of these accessories mean nothing to me unless they are a Top Hat and Monocle.
This seems to be a very successful update.
I'm not taking any stance now towards accessories, because the update happened while I was sleeping and now I'm at work, so I can't see anything for at least another 5-6 hours, but judging from the amount of traffic it generated here, and the strong opinions, well, yes it works!
By the way, I don't understand why people whine at "I open a box = I waste 750ce" thingy? As I understand the situation, if you don't like the accessory, you can still trade it? maybe for far more than 750ce if it is rare and there's a demand for it?
Same with the Regalia thingy. I didn't really needed the ce then, and I didn't intent to wear any of it, but I sold the at the AH for a really good amount of cr. I'll imagine the same thing will happen with the accessories - people buying the ce to open the boxes and then selling the best items for good profit.
Huh. It's almost exactly like the keys and crates in TF2 (if anything, it's a teeny bit better because you still have the option to work up the energy yourself, but that really isn't saying much at all). This is giving me more and more of an incentive to trade away all the TF2 hats I don't wear. Surely there's enough for a key or two in there :D
With my luck it'll probably be a while before I get an accessory that fits on the volcanic plate helm D:
Prize wheel's still awesome, though
You should at least be able to change the colour for 50 E D:

Now I am the most adorable. >:3
okay the fact that people are getting upset about this is ridiculous heres my reason
1: this is not in your way, they are not a must have and with the "prize wheel" thingy these are gonna be rare as it is not everyone is going to have one.
2: should you BADLY WANT ONE the iron lockboxes are randomly found at the end of levels (you dont get one all the time) and if you really like spiral knights for the gameplay, you will probably find a few of these "boxes" and theyre not cheap, but tradeable. so just let the box build up and sell them. then buy the key or the energy ( whatevers cheaper at the time)
3: anyone here that has played tf2 knows that it has a thriving economy so take notice that keys are 750 ce or $2.50 usd which is the exact same as the tf2 keys also take notice of the iron lockboxes being random pickup alot like the crates in tf2 so this make accessories hats in spirals case SO THEYRE GONNA BE DAMN RARE
4: the P2P people are going to start churning these out and with so many the prices will drop so its a bit of a waiting game.
5:spiral knights is in fact an MMO which means you need to put time into the game to get the good stuff
6: i got a f2p tier 2 friend of mine who has been saving his cash and he found a lock box ( so did i) i gave it 2 him and he sold one of them with that money he was able to buy enough ce to get a key and he get a bandoleer
7: the world needs a bit of bling baby jeesuz
case closed. happy shiny hunting
I have to say Iam dissappointed shocked too!
Ive been arround since April, saw many failed complained things. But this time? SK? I want to be unique too? Lowering the prices half could double or even tripple or more the money youll get since tons of players will be getting them if you lower it down.
Σ(゚д゚lll)
I want to see some pics of people with their new accessories!
:)
Need a thread just for pictures I think, that would be great
Accessories are new items that can be augmented
Am I the only one who had to stop reading the mail after that?
you guys who think 2.50 a pop is expensive for aesthetics have obviously never played a nexon game
Good thing I'm loaded
@ Avixi
Exactly what I want, those vertical vents and glasses!
I feel that things like this should be cheaper. Lets evaluate things a teensy bit-
Let me get this straight-
To craft a 4* from a 3* item costs you 400 CE, and gets you a nice new item.
To craft a 5* from a 4* item costs you 800 CE, and gets you a fairly awesome item that you will want to use often.
To attain a key to open a box costs you 750 CE, and gets you a random costume addition type thing that does not make your knight better in any way.
This means that the only people that are able to end up using accessories are the ones with all the gear they already want, and enough energy to where they feel fine with blowing a new 5* item's worth in energy on a a couple keys that will only make them appear slightly different.
I personally think that keys should at least be found somewhere other than a shop, I'd love to see T1 and T2 players be able to use the items, rather than JUST those with a ton of wealth.
Omg, first box I open has a Ghostly Aura in it. <3
I almost didn't keep it when someone offered me 6kCE for it... but I like it too much. Really goes with my fallen armor.
I think the mech'tennas should glow more :P

Known fact: I don't like unreliable.
What bugs me about the Accessory system is that you need to sink 750CE to even see if it will be an item you'll like.
Yes, I'm aware I can sell it if I don't like it; but I'd rather not have to think about selling it in the first place.
That, and hum. The fact you need to destroy the item to remove it, and that there isn't a free preview option (you need to have it to even preview it on your plate seems). Again, when I decide to someday go after a Shocking Pink Maid Wing Ponytail thingamajinga, I'd rather know from the start that it'll work for me.
And with normal gear, thats what the recipe selection does, it gives you the delicious data so you can check if the Owlite Shield is what you need.
We really need a preview option for the auction house now...
And now I will start seeing spiral samurais and accessories benifit you with nothing...But it has one benifit.Making you look fancy! But really.I would love to look fancy...If I can afford to.
So I got booted to the main menu right after I got a weird object from the Prize Wheel, it looked almost like a Lockbox but was red, I have no idea what it was (as I didn't get it because of the boot...), anyone know what I missed out on? I've never seen that icon ever, and I looked through the wiki to no avail, so I'm beginning to think it was some sort of accessory.
@These are required. No exceptions.
http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/kamina-glasses#.To6N6ZtT8rt
I JUST SAID THIS EARLIER! YEAAAAAAAAAAAH! MUST BE ADDED! START PETITION!
I didn't get TF2 or SK for hats or accessories or such gimcrackery. I got them because they looked like so much fun and I'd already been saturated with a lot of exposure to the former, and SK looked awesome and harkens back to the games of older days.
That being said...
>> You expect me to believe I can be an awesome astronaut midget Black Mage on a clockwork planet. This much is fine, after all it's the whole premise of the game. And it's worth it.
>> You expect me to believe enemies cannot be hurt by fire or spikes or about 10000 Volts coming out of the floor beneath them. Okay, I'm used to games pulling off different rules for enemies as opposed to players.
>> You expect me to believe enemies that don't get hurt by the above can still use them to transform into jumping flailing petrol bombs. Ummm... Welll... I guess it's part of the same reason the above is believable
>>Hairpins are worth the same in terms of CE as a piece of force-field and magick enforced chainmail... Um... I've seen enough things IRL that are expensive but are purely cosmetic, so... and of course, you don't NEED hairpins to win the game even if they look nice...
>>They somehow self-destruct when you transfer them to a different head or hairstyle and this makes them comparable in terms of cost to TF2 hats even though those behave somewhat more realistically by virtue of displaying a thorough LACK of self-destruction ability...
And now my brain is irrevocably broken. I will make it a point to sue OOO for neurological damage. And then I'll use the money from that to launch a suit against Valve for being such a bad influence on OOO. And then at Amazon because they run the servers for this game and they suck at that (not to mention they also stink at delivering items to my home country). I will then make it a point to send 90% of the money gained from these lawsuits to OOO. The other 10% goes into buying them all clown costumes so they can see how ridiculous this update has made them look a bit more clearly.
Ah well, I guess I can just use the boxes same way OOO is- for exploiting the spoiled special snowflake scene-kid schoolyard crowd! That probably more than justifies their existence.
will u plz change Vertical Vents to top of head accessory so they can be attached to angelic helmits the only set i like the looks of besides the starter helm with pig tails but i want to put it on my valk set . singed by me and all nekos
But, cat tails and Wolver tails. Cause they're cute. Make it happen!
You think OOO is actually just doing this really SILLY pricing for a one-use item right now because they want the older people who do pay real money to get them first?
And then they'll fix the obvious problems and release a new wave of accessories for the people who do have cash to get but then... you know, make the older wave of accessories available at saner and more reasonable prices?
Or maybe they can do what the last F2P MMO I played regularly did and mail all of their veteran players a free commemorative accessory on SK's anniversary or other special occasions or something?
I dunno, as you can see from this and last post I'm just looking for reasons not to be an Eeyore here.
Someone on #spiral-knights (shall remain unnamed) actually found files for 10 wolver tails.
Yup Nick was showing off some tails in game.
I'm quite dissapointed, yes accessories separate us from the crows, yes they make us look cool BUT it's so hard to get one and it costs 750 energy JUST to get a silver key, AND the accessories don't have any use (besides the on i mentioned)
I would hate to see you guys play other OOO games where the cost of somethings range in the tens of millions and earning money is a lot harder the old fashioned way.
@milkman did u get a screenie or multiple screenies of him?
This accessory thing is a blatant attempt to convince you to buy CE. Frankly, I don't know what they were thinking when they set the price for a silver key to be 750ce, it doesn't make sense to make an item with absolutely no function, this expensive. The idea is generally good, but the pricing is absolutely outrageous.
http://wiki.spiralknights.com/File:Cool_Mustache-Equipped.png
I thought this talk about moustaches was a joke...
It would be nice if OOO would make a accessory or something that changes the color of the knight :)
Dunno where in the forums to ask this but, can I put accessories on gear that I use as costumes (not costume-only gear but regular gear like wolver coat and magic hood) and have them show or do I have to put them on my actual gear?

750 CE for a *chance* at getting a random accessory, out of a pool of over a hundred.
