There should be somewhere you could fight all the time without the use of crowns or energy
so players could constantly be active doing something rather than talking.

Clockworks tier 2 and up and
Clockworks tier 2 and up and the PvP games both generate a net profit unless you die/lose significantly more than average (based on current prices of crystal energy and mod calibrators). I don't really see the purpose of a free area, except perhaps to do controlled testing to try and figure out the math behind the game..

That's all you can do. If there was something more fun than that, that required no crowns OR energy, people wouldn't even bother playing the game.
