A little perspective on shadow keys.
Totally agree with Hanktron...
That is my stance on this.
I have been playing Spiral Knights since April and I love the game! Have met lots of cool people and the game is still fun and exciting to me.
As pointed out, the Shadow Lairs are NOT essential to the game. If you dont like the price then dont play! They are basically rehashed bosses to give someone a challenge who is willing to pay for it. I for one am content playing the existing clockworks and upgrading gear.
Dont worry about the new stuff as it is not being forced on you. And if you want to play it, don't complain about the price.
Simple as that.
Do you know what the word "disappointment" means?
Try to see this this from the perspective of a F2P T3 veteran. We've been doing FSC runs for months. T1 and T2 where the latest to get new boss levels.
So what do you think the vets where thinking when they heard about "shadows falling over cradle" and "a new challenge for only the bravest knights"? A new, really hard T3 boss, of course, something new we can really sink out teeth into.
But OOO didn't give us what we hoped for. They gave content obviously only intended for people are willing to chalk up a lot of money. Since the T3 players didn't get what they expected, they are now disappointed. What you are reading on the forum are their cries of disappointment. They are not upset because they think the game has been ruined, they are upset because they expected something, and got nothing.
If you think being disappointed over this is moronic, then I can only assume you think all F2P players should set their hopes for the future to zero, and never expect an update to offer new content for them, ever. Is that what you think?
What makes you think I'm not also a "F2P T3 veteran"? I've expressed disappointment with accessories. Hell, I've even said they were all ugly. I expect OOO to update the game, but I do not necessarily expect them to update the game with new content that I enjoy. I play the game because I enjoy where it's at. Yeah, I'm getting tired of where it's at, but for now it's still worth my time. As someone who hasn't paid a cent to play this ad-free game, I don't feel like I deserve anything out of the developers. If the game lines up with my interest, great I'll play. If the developers go in a different direction, that's their choice. I might be disappointed and I might even express that on the forum.
As someone who has paid for another OOO game I still never expected them to develop content that I wanted. I paid $20 bucks or so for YPP about five years ago because I liked where it was at. I knew they would add content, and they did. None of it really lined up with what I wanted. Some of it actually hurt me (I made a good bit of poe and had a lot of fun running a weavery stall before the weaving puzzle). Was I disappointed that they released the new puzzle, sure I was. Just because you play a game that is constantly being created (F2P or P2P) and enjoy it now does not guarantee you will always enjoy it. It does not mean the developers owe you anything (even if you did pay) or need to develop new content in the direction you want.
There is a difference between expressing disappointment and throwing a tantrum. Maybe you specifically haven't thrown one, but plenty of people have. If anything it is going to make OOO more resistant to change.
posted this earlier, might as well post it again:
People, don't give in to the "I WANT IT NOW" urge and buy a ton of silver keys now, just be patient and wait, when the cash dries up OOO will change their system and you will feel better when you do get your shadow key, gambling for a key now will only encourage them to stay with the current system and will not help your fellow players, pull your lockboxes from the AH for now (they may be worth more later ;) ), and if you see someone opening a bunch of boxes /epicfail them.
