In light of this thread, I was wondering what people's thoughts are on the best pair of swords in the game is.

The other thread was too limited since non-normal damage type swords cannot be used exclusively due to their weaknesses to 1/3rd of the mobs out there. However, with two swords you have covered all your bases.

Question:
If you could carry only two swords, what would they be and why?

My answer:
Final Flourish - range, speed & slight knockback
Divine Avenger - damage & charge

I would probably go with BTB

I would probably go with BTB and DA, because a piercing sword is awesome against all its intended target (including neutral ones) and DA have one of the best charge attack out there (I don't like Levi's one because i play in party the majority of the time and it REDUCE party dps most of the time).

According strata, i would switch one sword for GF (for example, in Jelly Palace, i will go GF/DA).

I'd use a Glacius - for the freeze charge, and it being a DPS DA, and a BTS - for fiends and wolvers.
And they both look nice.

in other words, which damage type is generally least useful?

If any newbies are out there, this thread essentially explains how to equip multiple swords. Namely, own a piercing sword, an elemental sword, and a shadow sword. Carry all three if you have weapon slots for them; carry the two that are most appropriate for the stratum, if you can carry only two.

This thread's question can be recast as: Which of the three (piercing, elemental, shadow) is generally least useful? The answer boils down to an analysis of which monster families are most troubling and common. I'd say that the most important families are gremlins (mainly because of the healing), fiends (devilites and greavers are nasty), beasts (wolvers are nasty), and constructs (because they're so common). Undead and slimes are generally slower and more predictable, although undead worry me more than slimes.

So it's clear that a piercing sword (Final Flourish or Barbarous Thorn Blade) is really valuable. For the second sword, it's a toss-up between elemental and shadow. And sure enough, the posters in this thread largely agree; however, they're favoring elemental over shadow, perhaps because the elemental swords have conspicuously great charge attacks. Also, although shadow is important for gremlins, the piercing swords are already pretty good against gremlins.

@Bopp Don't forget that a pierce sword's quick attack is really useful for chasing down a gremlin healer that's lurching backwards across the map. Both the Acheron and Faust leave you hacking at thin air way too often in that situation.

I think you're agreeing with me.

Nicoya-Kitty, that's true; it's one of the reasons I said that "the piercing swords are already pretty good against gremlins".

Actually, the Acheron is plenty fast for gremlins, but the piercing swords do have longer reach, which is nice.

Faust and Combuster. If a mob is too strong, they both can inflict a status that kills the enemy for you.

I know this is mainly about

I know this is mainly about swords but come on why not an elemental gun for a 2-wep combo with BTB?

Elemental is good on: construct and undead | Elemental is neutral on: slimes
Monsters that do not dodge: construct, undead, slimes

Phantoms, the one dodgey undead, you should use a BTB (how convenient)

anyone see a reason why not to invest in an elemental gun? Sure DA might do more damage but guns keep you completely out of harms way and are especially useful for gun puppies which just scream "gun me!". I myself am a pure gunner always so again I'm sorry I invaded a sword thread.

yes, piercing sword with elemental gun is very popular

Mobbs, you are right. The combination of piercing sword with elemental gun is very popular, and quite reasonable.

gran faust & divine

gran faust & divine avenger... (yes i am i think one of those few who doesn't like the BTB or the other piercing swords. i just don't like the combo)

i use GF against wolvers (and i think it's GREAT haha) DA against fiends (and i tend to stay clear of fiends i HATE devilites and greavers) and sometimes i take my levi (when i need the speed haha i have 2 ASI trinkets and i have both skolver pieces so i always get very high ASI at least)

maybe a heavy piercing sword would be nice haha

Mobbs,I am a gunner as well,

Mobbs,

I am a gunner as well, so you're welcome to invade. I was just asking about the two swords. The purpose was to provide insight to other players about the synergy of having multiple weapons of the same type (swords, in this case) as opposed to having "one weapon to rule them all." I would like to point out that my intent wasn't to exclude a 3rd or 4th weapon from the question, so if it makes you more comfortable, the question for you would be:

"If you could carry only two swords, what would they be and why? Oh and you also happen to have a gun or two equipped for turrents and safe distance damage when you have low health. Or a bomb if you so choose. But forget what the guns and bombs are and tell me your two swords and why you would use those two in combination over other available combinations."

If I had to pick ONLY two weapons to play with for a week, it'd be a polaris & FF for the very reasons you mentioned earlier. While the DA's charge has range, it is too cumbersome to charge it up and attack over and over.

-----
@Kickthebucket

I didn't like the flourish before lockdown because of the 2nd and 3rd swing.

I know you wish there'd be a heavy pierce sword, but did you know the 1st swing of the flourish has the same range as a heavy sword?

I mainly use swing-shield-swing because I love that 1st swing so much. I frequently do the 2nd swing too. I rarely use the 3rd swing. It bugs me to no end and actually makes using the sword feel slower because of the long leap that takes forever to recover on.

If you do have one lying around, I suggest you try using it on your next fiend stratum and try out different tactics.

Also, I'm glad no one said:
"DVS + Winmillion - I can dodge like no other. Hear me roar."

I only carry two swords at

I only carry two swords at any given time... and my favorites are:

1) DA - Undead/ Constructs + wicked knock-back and mob control with charge attacks. There's a reason my friends and I call it "the cheaty sword".

2a) DVS - The fast attack speed balances out the DA when needed and can be used for Fiends/ Beasts effectively (learn to control the hits and shield properly though)

I also round out my slots with a Polaris (I'm a suck gunner - so ti's the best option for me) and a Tier/ Level dependent bomb.

My other sword choices for specialized levels are BTB (Fiends... I prefer DVS for Beasts really) and Acheron (Slimes/ Gremlins... not a Gran Faust fan).

My first 5* in the game was a DVS. Besides it's myriad attractions in the usual levels, it's great for bosses... the fast attack speed allows more hits before Snarby or the Twins shield, it poisons the JK and it's great for Vanna's mask stages.
