==================================================================================================================================================================================================

so there's been some talk in-game about this "SOPA" or stop online piracy act,, and i thought i would make it simpler for most of us by posting this.

its kind of hard to describe things like this,, but you can pretty much punch in "sopa" into any search engine and come up with a whole bunch of information. but then again, do u rally want to sit threw all that ? i think not. staying on subject, i have a few links thanks to a friend who helped me out today,, so here's a way to help inform the users. (think they deserve to know):

http://survivingtheworld.net - i found this to be the best representation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/main_page - wiki says "Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge"

"For over a decade, we have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. Right now, the U.S. Congress is considering legislation that could fatally damage the free and open Internet. For 24 hours, to raise awareness, we are blacking out Wikipedia."

http://www.reddit.com - just a longer overview.
http://wikipedia.org/wiki/stop_online_piracy_act - the full story.

just spreading the word, asking you to please don't hate on me.

any comments are welcome. (thanks lostillusion)

*obligatory belongs in gremlin chatter comment*

Yeah I've been keeping up with it for awhile. Officially SOPA has been put under the rug, when it was threatened with White House opposition, they sort of came to this decision. But the problem still persists with PIPA (Protect IP I believe). There's also apparently another one out there called ACTA, which may be worse as this is a trade agreement between nations, aka not just the problem of those here in the USA.

I do understand things like piracy need to be controlled, but it shouldn't be handled by those who barely understand how the internet works, had SOPA passed as it was, so many websites could go down because of user generated content and so much other crap that I can't even explain. I usually avoid a lot of this political stuff but this one has been hitting home.

P.S. I think you mean reddit, not redit.

it isn't that spiral knights

it isn't that spiral knights would be shut down by the act, it is that the forums "could" be shut down by the act. The argument goes something like this.

If a poster linked something that was copyrighted, action could be taken from the website based on SOPA. Since the owners wouldn't want to police the forums rigorously enough to prevent any problems, the simple solution is to take the forums down.

Now, would it actually happen if SOPA passed? probably not, but SOPA would allow such a prediction to easily come true.

Also, as proven by techies (and anyone with any knowledge of how the internet works) there are easy bypasses to these laws. So the laws would not stop what it is trying to stop. If I want to go to the piratebay.org, instead of typing the name, I'll just use an IP address, or a private DNS (or setup my own private DNS). Essentially these laws are useless. I will say that they have a high potential of success against the people that shop for knock off coach handbags since those people probably don't have an ounce of technical knowledge.

Long and the short of it is

Long and the short of it is that it's like every single censorship law and rule that exists:

The people the rule is there to prevent and protect against find ways around it and basically ignore it.
The only people to be harmed, bothered or have problems caused endlessly by it are the innocent bystanders.

Same with most laws, government issues and regulations in general, actually...

It's something to think about ...

Thanks for the links above.

This is not a good thing for any of us. From what I have read of SOPA, its corporations making a "land grab" for electronic data rights.

When the Supreme Court of the USA makes rulings like the one to give corporations the right to spend freely on elections (http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/09pdf/08-205.pdf), It's a bit scary for our grand 1st amendment of the Constitution. It makes money = free speech in many ways.

SOPA and similar legislation considering the corporate roll toward freedom of information on the internet is a punch in the face to us end-users.

Makes me think of all the ridiculous copy rights corporations have on genetic patents of living organisms. (http://www.ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/elsi/patents.shtml) (http://www.actionbioscience.org/genomic/crg.html). Wrong on so many levels.

Personally I'd mail your

Personally I'd mail your representatives whether it's "officially under the rug" or not. The politicians have a bad habit of sneaking junk through... such as the the oh so lovely Patriot Act. Which broke several amendments and it still got passed.

Amendments don't seem to mean squat if the people making the laws don't want to see them.

Also... ren, take a chill pill. You're not a mod, if the mods had an issue with the off topics they'd move them themselves... not replying to them.

I wrote to both of my senators expressing my opposition to SOPA. I think this is the best course of action.

This bill passing would affect Spiral Knights (as well as nearly everything else tied to the internet), especially here on the forums. If SOPA passes, OOO will have to sensor us -- otherwise someone might post a link to a copyrighted picture or video and unwittingly get the entire site shut down if owner of said picture/video notices.

Or, even worse, a competing company can simply claim that there's infringing material (even if there is not) and get the site shut down while the burden is on OOO to prove that there's nothing wrong after all. This stuff is bad news bears for sure.

SEGA hasn't really said anything at the moment.
Although, ESA has said they support SOPA (big mistake), people are pressuring SEGA for an official response.

I fully support SOPA. Let the scummy, thieving sites fold. It won't hurt the honest sites much. If anything, it will make those who run them be more attentive and active on those sites they claim they run. It will be good for the users of those sites. Good sites won't be touched at all by SOPA. The internet purchases can go to the good sites and the scum can perish. The net won't disappear because bad sites go down or get blocked. USFDA claims to block bad drugs from being sold and entering the market. When they were created, the entire pharmaceutical industry didn't go away.
