What's wrong with being a gunner?

I had 20 energy left for the day and decided to join a group to finish off my last bit of energy. I decided to rejoin the jelly stratum and just do a couple levels, maybe get lucky and get with a group that was close to the clockwork terminals so I could hopefully get my 4* recipe upgrades. Since the start of the stratum is beast (and for the few days I have joined a group, I have always started at Moorcroft), I adjusted my weapons accordingly with a magnus and shadow alchemer, but I ended up getting tossed into a group that was already at the clockwork terminals.

I had loaded in and proceeded to switch out my magnus, with my pulsar, when the leader of the group became extremely bothered with me. "Seriously, a 3* gunner? And he has a magnus for RJP!" began popping up in chat. He then proceeded to tell me to go get a real weapon a.k.a a sword.
I told him I switched out my weapons and was going to explain further, but frankly, I didn't want to put up with it. Not to mention I didn't want to end up leaving a group that was mid-RJP. So I left and finished my 20 energy elsewhere.

I just have to ask... Do people normally have beefs with gunners? >_>

Sadly, the gunslinger class is the most disrespected of the 3 classes.

By players and OOO alike.

Don't listen to them. You play your style of gaming, nobody needs to tell you how you play YOUR game.

I chose the bomber line.

Oh !#@#! have I been insulted for a number of misplaced Blast Bombs. (Usually I don't do this FYI)

All you need is your Ignore Button.

Not in that situation

Gunners can get kind of annoying when you're fighting gremlins or wolvers because they dodge bullets easily. But since you had a Magnus, it wouldn't have mattered since it's too fast to dodge, although RJP has neither of them... Either way, that knight was just being a brat, ignore him/her and keep on gun-slinging, I really don't see enough gunslingers. And now this tempts me to leave my Gran Faust the next time i go to RJP and gun-sling instead.

always idiots

In any large group of people, there is a substantial fraction who is...idiotic...or, to put it more charitably, of a different opinion. Most USA citizens who traveled abroad between January 2001 and January 2009 know what I'm talking about. Please remember that not everybody feels this way. Hang in there.

Every weapon has their own style

I mean, swords slash, guns pierce and bombs explode.

I say there's nothing wrong with being a gunner, but it's always best to have alternative weapons in case you come across pierce-resistant monsters like jellies, or monsters that evade your gunfire.

Shield bump can save you from crowds no matter what weapon you pick.

Thats the problem. Gunslingers contribute less to the team damage than any other class (bad ones even have negative dps because they reduce damage of the others using polaris), often have an easier time than the other players and might get more heat out of it than the rest as "reward" for the problems they are causing.

A good gunslinger can be a very useful addition to a low - medium skill team. It's almost like having multiple extra "support players", one for each other team member... interrupting mobs in 1-2 places while shieldcancel-bumping them in a third place. In a really good team... not so much.

He then proceeded to tell me to go get a real weapon a.k.a a sword.
Yes, get one. You don't have to use it. But you can if you find yourself in a situation where it's considerably more effective than your guns. Actually, that might happen quite often. "Hybrids" are always way more effective, not matter what "main weapons". Feel free to return the favour by complaining to your swordie if he carries neither an "offhand" gun nor a bomb.

Earlier today Otaia and I

Earlier today Otaia and I were in a gate, about to go to an arena. This swordie joins, complains about my nitro for a bit (I know some people have a problem with nitro, but I'm pretty precise with my placements and all my friends who play with me perform excellently while I'm using it).

Then before the arena, as we're on the elevator, he delays a bit and goes, "u guys are switching to swords for the arena right?"

Otaia sarcastically replies, "wats a sword???"

the swordie responds, "u'll need more than dinky bombs and guns to handle the arena"

Otaia gleefully kicks him from the party, and we proceed to dominate the upcoming arena, duo (though we did have a little trouble with the 8 polyp spawn, it was a shock arena and I was heating some less-than-optimal gear)

I think they're horrible at guns that they don't see the point of anyone else having one.

Which I don't, because I'm learning to pulsarspam. Won't be useful in RJP, but might go into the clockworks with the 2 pulsars one day.

Meh

I don't have trouble with gunners. in fact, I don't have trouble with any player so long as they aren't on the standard list of: 'What kind of disrespectful idiot are these people?'

Some people just have issues with differences. They can't accept that anything that doesn't follow their standards can be good, and therefore condemn it as worthless.

I have nothing to say to these people. If they're so ignorant to think that they know best of all and that no other opinion will prove them wrong, I won't even bother to tell them that not everyone=them.

There is nothing bad with

There is nothing bad with being a gunner, unless you are doing a couple of things wrong. These are:

1) Polaris spam. Omg that just hurts my eyes and my ears. There are parts in the game when Polaris is really useful, like UFSC or SL Twins, but why use it everywhere? I met so many gunners wielding polaris, who didnt stop shooting throughout the whole run. First of all, if you are a swordsman, you have no idea what you are attacking because of the explotions, second - it pushes mobs around, so you often get hit when, for example, charging your sword, because u didnt expect a mob to be thrown at you from another corner of the room by some stupid Polaris :)

2) Shooting at mobs who have some protection vs gunners. Like for example: Mecha Knights or Wolves. I met many gunners who have been shooting at mechas, making them raise their shield, which resulted in an endless fight because only 1 bullet has been hitting them due to an activated shield. Or wolves - they just dodge the shots, which leads to swordsmen running aimlessly around the battlefield.

Besides that, a gunner can be a useful addition to the party, but being an all-round player is much better. For example, for FSC runs, i have DA + Blitz + Shiver, which means i can do everything and substitute every other player if something goes wrong.

So here are the reasons I hate gunners.

1. They don't do that much damage( or not many statuses to help), because they are either gunning ( with small amounts of damage) or running becuase they are too close in range.

2. I hate polaris. Period. Too many people use it and I, being a sword person don't bother attacking because I can't see a thing. I am waiting for them to nerf polaris so everyone who has one will be mad and boohoo XD.

3. When they have low star guns. (This maybe what happened in your case) They just don't do that much damage at all, usually no statuses, or knockbacks when they are lower stars,

4. When they shoot at mecha knights/ wolvers it just makes it harder for others.

5. This is a good one. In pvp 5 star gunners are almost impossible for the other groups. Unless you have striker that it, or a guardian shield to help block.

6. Most of them are too cocky. ''Hah you all died I lived the longest'' True, but you stayed way over there and just shot while the rest of us took it on head first.

7. Alot of them make the wrong choices. '' Oh I will get blackhawk for JK with tokens yay'' 2 things wrong with that. Peirce and shadow mix damage will not do that much damage to jellies. Second is that people will not want a Sentenza in vana.

Yeah thats all I have to say.
Though gunners are helpful in many ways aswell.

I generally don't have a problem with any style of play, but I do get annoyed by people using some guns/bombs. I almost always start groups open to anyone, and you can't hate certain styles of play if you are going to let random people join.

I mostly have a problem if people shoot guns at wolvers (makes it impossible to hit them with my BTB) or mechas (they shield my sword swing right when I'm going to do massive damage), spam polaris ridiculously, especially when it is doing nothing, or if they are blindly using nitronomes sending lumbars flying across their screen taking out all their teammates.

So mostly, I just don't like annoying gameplay. Swords don't lend to annoying play quite as much since most people don't like the calibur series once they get into the game. But that charge can be just as annoying as the nitronome.

However, I love having a good bomber and/or gunner in my group because they can handle some things better or make some things a lot easier. I mean, I don't always carry a gun, so a gunner solves any problems running into hard to reach gun puppies. A good status bomber makes the whole fight easier, or if they have a vortex it just makes swordies lazy. I will say though, that I prefer if everyone carries at least 2 weapon types (especially if they have 4 slots), just so they can be useful in more situations.

I am mostly a gunner and since I started like 2-3 months ago, I haven't had a single complaint (yet) about me using my guns.
"u'll need more than dinky bombs and guns to handle the arena"
I can solo an arena without deaths with guns and I am pretty sure that other gunners out there can do that too, there are some videos on Youtube too.
And also, what I like to do when using my Polaris-to-be is first shield-bump the enemy into a corner and then spam Polaris shots at them. It is a way of dealing high damage while not annoying the team.

Unfortunately, gunners are

Unfortunately, gunners are far too under powered right now. With no good attack+ armor it's hard to maximize dps. However, I have out dps'd a few swordies in my small time of being a full gunner (about a week of having full 5* stuff).
While I understand fully why some people don't like gunners (mainly Polaris spammers), you can't group them together. I carry a Polaris, but I find that my Storm driver's charge can one hit puppies and sometimes lumberers.

Also, it may not mean much, but I've only had one person mention me being full gunner, and it was a positive comment. Something like, "full gunner eh? I respect that"

Yeah

I usually adjust how I play according to a teammate's tactics.

If they're a bomber spamming blast bombs (never happened before, but hypothetically), I'd go to the edge of the knockback radius and single out targets, or run with the bomber and make sure he's clear to move.

Something like that, and when I can. If I can't, I just leave them to it.

I'd sooner have a skilled

I'd sooner have a skilled gunner than an idiot swordsman, or an idiot of any kind. Sawkush is a fool for judging all gunners like that. Plenty of gunners are probably more valuable to their team than you are, sir. I've run with gunners who are brilliant and gunners who spam the hell out of polaris. I've run with bombers who I feel confident seeing with a nitronome, and I've run with bombers who can't handle shivermisting vanaduke. And I've run with swordsmen who do their job well, and swordsmen who rush in and get pummeled, wasting the health of the rest of us.

And for LD, gunners can be brilliant. I gun most of the time and it can be rewarding, especially when your teammates suit your play style (i.e. you have a good guardian to run around with).

The guy who mocked you is probably the kind of person who thinks getting the "best" gear makes you a good player and that's all there is to it.

for aspiring gunners

Here is a killer loadout for a hybrid gunner that I have hit upon (others may have come to find similar loadouts):
-Ash of Agni (or Voltaic Tempest in a fire themed level)
-Umbra Driver
-Storm/Nova Driver
-(optional) backup sword: Leviathan or Flourish type
This loadout absolutely destroys anything that isn't a Beast, especially if you can run 2x Elite Trueshot modules as well. Simply get things cooking (or frying) and kite around while taking pot-shots from a safe distance. Solo, this setup will melt jellies in RJP incredibly fast, and it works very well in a team too. I find that guns just don't have enough DPS to go it alone as effectively as swords, but a damage status bomb really levels the playing field.

For Beast type levels (and to a lesser extent, fiends), there really is no way for gunners to put up the kind of DPS that a swordie can get, so don't be surprised if noobs rage at you for using a Callahan in a Wolver Den (or Dark City). I've pretty much given up on gunning there, but I will never kick a gunner if he 1) stays alive and 2) keeps shooting (with a Magnus line, of course).

The only time I've found Polaris/Supernova spam to be remotely effective was if everyone in the party had one, and they stuck together, and even then it wasn't very good in large open spaces.

So now we're throwing personal jabs over a kicking incident?

IMO I think the kick was justified. I once got thrown into a random party with 2 bombers and one gunner. My first thought was, holy fudgenuggets, I'm screwed. I went into the party, which happened to be FSC, and it turns out they did alright for their class. My only issue is that they didn't do a lot of damage, so I had to do most of the work, but they kept me alive and that's what matters. Not to mention there's been multiple times that a Polaris-spammer has saved me from having my face nommed off. If you're the kicker, or the rager, give it a rest about them gunners and just wait until one saves you from being face-chewed. You'll appreciate it.
