So an aquaintance of mine said he modded he game, so he gave me links to his screenshots *stifles laughter*

I don't know how he did all that.

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but according to the TOS (which you obviously read, of course):
6. Restrictions. You agree not to do any of the following prohibited actions:
...
13. modify any files or use any game hacking/altering/cheating software or tools, including scripting or macroing software, or attempt to disassemble the game client and/or decipher the data transmissions between Spiral Knights' client and server. These activities will result in immediate termination of the Player's Account and may subject you to civil and/or criminal liability.
Granted, it's not done with any malicious intent, but... well.
/shrug
no, i don't recall making a snipe look like Vanaduke "bannable." I don't see how changing the texture on something is wrong.
1.why are the vanasnipes carrying scissor blades?
and
2.im not quite sure but im almost positive that you can get banned or in sum sort of trouble by modding the game....
i see what u mean, Kupoo. you see he was just changing textures, not cheating, i.e giving himself crowns/energy. He wasn't using any sort of software or tools.
besides if that was really "illegal," he probably wouldn't have been telling me about it so openly. the stats on his vanaduke/scissorblades weren't changed either. So i think he's alright.
Except we dont care if its cheating or not. He still modified the game.
-not cheating, i.e giving himself crowns/energy. He wasn't using any sort of software or tools.
Perhaps not, but it's still file modification, and still technically against the Terms - and that's not something that you want to be showing off so openly, harmless or not.

If I were to tell a friend about a SUPER AWESOME CROWN FOUNTAIN GRINDING SPOT!!, I would assume he or she would have the sense to keep that knowledge reasonably low-profile. I don't think your friend would have expected you to go right out where OOO is and basically say, "hey, this guy is violating the Terms of Service, cool huh?"
I know how he did it, though yes its bannable in every way. I'm not gonna say how he did it though, since I dont wanna get banned myself.
EDIT:
"He wasn't using any sort of software or tools."
I can safely say he used SpiralSpy.
So good. :P
Maybe giant snipe bananaduck next?
I'll admit that is pretty funny, especially the mini vanas running around in haven.
I dunno though, it seems like your friend is dancing on the line of ban worthy behavior here, and you posting these pictures with his name all over them might be the very thing that causes the banhammer to come crashing down. Not exactly a low key move there. Although this was purely done in good fun, I would strongly suggest you take down the links, edit the pics to blur out his name then repost them.
Like Kupoo said, for some reason I doubt that when he gave you those links he was expecting you to come post them on this fourm...
"So an aquaintance of mine said he modded he game"
Well, after reading this thread, I am not sure if your aquaintance will become a full-blown friend :(
Looks like Sunleaf inadvertently "snitched" on Guitarknight xD
good job Sunleaf!
This is coming up a lot recently, so I dug back and found the thread with the official response to retexturing. Before you laugh, you should look long, hard at the last post in this thread
That Kozmaduke is both the funniest and most disturbing thing I have ever seen.
The ToS mentions how we cannot create derivative works based on the game...
Does that mean fan-art/concept art for suggestions are against the ToS too?
@Alphastevo
Nah, only that you can't go and sell said fanworks. Non-commercial use is fine.
As for the topic:
I'm kinda sad that they outright ban you for it rather than just tell you to stop it, or at least not publish pictures.
It will be funny if your friend gets banned; all thanks to you.
As Twiddle has linked, modification of game files is not something we permit here, no matter how humorous it may be. Images like this would confuse new players (such as Vanaduke's mace, which cannot be equipped by players) and just does not look good on us.
Please don't modify game files.
Isn't modifying game file bannable or something? There was a thread where someone asked if they can texture some stuff, and most people say you can do it, just don't say you did.
