I'm finishing up the missions but I need 5 star armour now. I really think the Chaos Cloak is good, but I don't know about the resistance and stuff. Any suggestions? (I'm at tier 3, no duh XP)
Chaos Cloak, Divine Mantle, or Grey Feather set?
Chaos is they way to go, bro.
So what if not many other people use it?
Just makes you more unique.
But beware, It's difficult to use.
But, if you lag at FSC and walk into the fire a lot... i would suggest getting grey feather.
Don't bother with divine, split ele/sha defense isn't to good.
But a divine helm with greay feather mantle wouldn't be bad together because the divine veil gives a nifty fiend bonus.
I use divine both for faust/FoV and to pair with skolver. I don't see how ele/shd is any worse than piercing/normal.
For FSC, pair it with a Divine Veil. You end up with two bars of ele, one bar of shadow, one bar of normal, and fire med. More than enough if you play decently. (If you can get a fire UV on either piece, that would be even better, of course.)
Get armor related to your favorite weapon class (swordsman, bomber, or gunner). All three Magic sets are inferior to the bonuses you can get with class-specific armor.
Divine Set: no normal defense, and fiend dmg bonus only on the veil, not mantle
Grey Feather Set: admittedly good defense, but Vog Cub, Volcanic Demo, and Nameless outclass it because it lacks any offensive bonuses
Chaos Set: universal medium CTR and DMG bonus but CTR is not that useful on some weapons and class-specific armor allows you to get at least DMG very high on your favorite class; also, take note of risky status weaknesses
Chaos Cloak is the best recon set in the game (max CTR for every weapon), and all-around the best set for hybrids. Players can make this set shine ANYWHERE, especially with the abundance of CTR weapons laying around now (Triglav, Brandishes). Combine it with a gunner, bomber, or sword trinket and you've basically got the bonuses of any set available.
No other armor can boast TWO universal medium bonuses.
For players that rarely get hit, and use more than one weapon type...the glass cannon set is the way to go.
Chaos is the only set that gives CTR on swords. It's very similar to the Mad Bomber set, except you don't have to limit yourself. And believe me: when you wear crappy armor, you learn how to dodge everything pretty fast.
Lots of stuff deals split nor/whatever. So its best to have atleast some normal protection.
Only in t2 and LD. In tier 3, you're unlikely to get hit with normal unless you're fighting gremlins/lumbers.
I don't remember whether things have changed since this thread happened, but there are many sources of normal damage in Tier 3.
@batabii - you left out Vana, Trojans, and Slag Guards as major contributors of normal damage.
@bopp - I believe gremlins were switched to split elemental on T2 and possibly full elemental on T3 (feb 22nd patch notes and subsequent threads about taking elemental damage). I don't know if it is certain attacks or all of them.
Yeah, the patch notes say, "A few monsters have had their attacks switched to split damage in Tier 2 and pure damage in Tier 3." I don't know exactly where that leaves us --- I would love to know --- but the thread I cited mentions about 20 sources of normal damage. I think it's fair to say that there's still a lot of normal on Tier 3. If there isn't, then basically everyone with 5-star armor other than Radiant Silvermail, Dragon Scale, and Divine should be going nuts.
Basically the patch made gremlins and scuttlebots do elemental and trojans do shadow in some of their attacks.

I'm pretty sure things have changed in the past 5 months.
@nordlead most of those only apply to FSC.
Also in my experience, thwackers still deal normal damage, even in tier 3, at least judging by the attack animations (and it makes sense, given they're just using standard hammers). Not sure about bombers.
"I'm pretty sure things have changed in the past 5 months."
Some things have changed, but most of the rules of Spiral Knights have not changed, right? Your assertion that almost all of the normal damage is gone from Tier 3 is totally unsupported, and contradicts other lines of evidence, including:
* The 20+ sources of normal damage in that thread, with supposedly only "a few" now changed to non-normal.
* Almost all 5-star armors have normal as half of their damage defense.
* People take Volcanic Plate Shield into FSC specifically because Vanaduke's mace deals so much normal.
* You can watch normal damage being done to you (look for the red ticks).
I see people with Grey Feather armor more than the other. Probably because one, it has decent defense, and two, it's so soft!
Divine would be second.
