I've been looking, and as Eurydice has kindly pleaded against, there has been an increase in personal insults. I'd like to know why you think this is occurring. This has been going on for a while now, but the last few threads I've seen had more than usual. Most of the time I see this in the Suggestion forums more than anything, when a silly idea is introduced. Now it's spread to the General Discussions, resulting in the locking of a thread.
Etiquette on the Forums (Updated for 8-14)
Elitism, sense of entitlement, teenage players and declining game (for the most part, and unless solved)
Its because the CE price is too high. Everyone whines, which annoys the people who actually understand some basic economics. Then when people start drawing conclusions based off of flawed logic and then scream out wild accusations that "explain" the reason for the high CE price... well... that just pisses off the people who aren't worried.
And then people turn around and accuse people like me, who aren't concerned at all, of being P2P elitiest rich people who are making a fortune off the high price. And people seem to react to P2P/F2P players with a sort of racism most of the time.
Simple. Players have no respect for each other. I'm almost pretty sure it's a forum thing to constantly insult each other and turn debates into warfares.
Because virtual currency economics makes you feel so much better in real life. Oh man, I joined something I shouldn't, I guess I better get going.
...if this thread started getting insulted. O.O
i think the main reason is the age gap between players. you got these goatee 25 year olds trying to make sense with underage 11 year olds (just do CoD, ull understand) and nobody understands each other and start raging :D
btw im NOT 25 yrs old. ill get a life by then..ehh..i mean...APPLE PIE! :) im still in skool ._.
Because this entire forum is full of Aumirs.
It's always the same thing. X throws something that's not really polite but not bad enough. Y replies in the same manner. Then they continue or wait until the other part rages.
I call it lack of self-control.
and Z comes in for no particular reason and adds a troll.
"HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA! APPLE PIE SAUCE!"
we happen to have ALOT of Z's :)
Truthfully, Canine-Vladimir, I don't think age really should be an issue. I am still in school, very soon to drive (hint to my age). I like to think of myself as mature for my age. Now, if someone younger or older came on to the forums, they still need to know their responsibilities. There are people I know in real life, and in SK, that vary in maturity with age not even being much of a factor.
sadly some arent and love to tackle a problem and try to win an unrelated argument. Mostly new players :0
okay Pokey i retract my former statement. Age isnt always the problem...so what is?
Pokenuevo you have me stomped now .... ill be back with a response ....
p.s. hint: i should start driving now ;)
OP must be rather new to online communities.
Also, I find it amusing that apparently knowing "supply and demand" makes you an all knowing economics expert.
If it was that easy, a few of my buddies would be out of a job.
I think most of it stems from a general irritation and possible feelings of hopelessness with the game and with a very few key forum posters, which is then deflected on to others who post topics that have been discussed before and abandoned. Usually these topics have to do with CE price, LD gear, F2P vs P2P, and newbies.
And then you have people who just like to be mean. Schadenfreude, making me feel glad I'm not you...
I'm not new to online communities at all. However, this was one of the... erm "better behaved" communities I contributed to. There are many forum communities that I know of that don't have as successful moderators as Spiral Knights. In fact, I can name over 10 online communities I've taken part in (starting by the age of 9 when I got my first computer). Now, I'm not saying I'm an expert, but I expect more from this community. Don't make assumptions on my experience.
I expect more from this community
Well there's your problem.
Shoebox, I meant that in the least hierarchy-like way possible. Rather, this game has well-devoted GMs and there are many decent players and human beings here. Just some of them get out of control at times.
/e still trying to figure out the reason why there so much haters and now figuring out Pokenuevo's age by his/her posts.
PS. i was Right! surely enough some one was bound to come in here with insults. the online gaming world is so predictable.
Some idiot will post something, then someone else replies not to the OPs tastes, then the OP will yell at said poster about how useless he/she is and how he/she should go die in a hole somewhere.
Or in Suggestions:
Some idiot will address a post to OOO, if anyone else posts on it negatively, they'll rage at them about how much of a nobody they are and how they only want to hear from 'the big shots'.
Usually the OPs of such threads are something along the lines of 'I WANT DISH Y U NO GIV MEH', which sparks a rage war.
"And then people turn around and accuse people like me, who aren't concerned at all, of being P2P elitiest rich people who are making a fortune off the high price. And people seem to react to P2P/F2P players with a sort of racism most of the time.
I hear ya. I personally hate racism, and the whole P2P/F2P discrimination is not far off from it. People just think that because you're above 3* that you're rich P2Pers, which seriously ticks me off, 'cuz then they start pulling out steroetypes with no actual reasoning.
@Psycho I like that post...well said.
@Pokenuevo This game used to be pretty awesome in the social aspect. It's getting worse though, and there's no stopping that. Higher energ prices cause people to be stingier every day.
this game has well-devoted GMs
Yeah nah.
The forums were better when the Devs posted directly.
some of them get out of control at times.
The problem isn't people getting out of control, it's all the repeat antagonists that have never contributed anything besides snarky comments not being permabanned from the forums.
It's usually either a troll who likes nobody or the OP who decides that they're automatically correct. Just because it's your idea or your discussion doesn't mean that you can't take some criticism.
/glares menacingly at Lesliechow
Age is somewhat of a problem.
It is so dang easy for any kid to bypass age-requirements on any game.
I did it on other games when i was younger. (Not saying that I did on this game, I really am old enough now :o)
Younger kids on a game with economics that they can't understand can get a little annoying.
But I don't blame OOO for letting it be easy for under-age people to play, because more players = more money.
I agree with Slayzz about your post. As a P2P player, people call me selfish for not handing out money regularly <.< (Note: I'm at 6.8k crowns, 0 CE)
Shoebox, I'd like to see the Devs post more, it'd make the community even better. Also, that's what I was regarding, when I meant out of control. Snarky comments =/= Helping
"And people seem to react to P2P/F2P players with a sort of racism most of the time."
"react to P2P/F2P players with a sort of racism most of the time."
"react to P2P/F2P players with a sort of racism"
"a sort of racism"
"racism"
O.O
Racism is specific to... you know, race. It has nothing to do with an abundance or lack of imaginary money on an internet game.
Racism is being used as a "hyperbole". It's a slightly overdramatic symbol to get the point across. Also, "a sort of racism" may not mean racism.
I'd like to see the Devs post more
Fat chance of that ever happening.
OOO is running this game like secret agents.
They don't want anything they don't approve of getting out, to get out.
That's why you only see Nick posting about upcoming stuff.
As I said in a previous thread. The information from Nick is still relatively low for many to keep confidence in the game. If we could get "What's in Development" again, that'd be great. However, if that can't be done, maybe more posts from him in general could be nice (i.e. He said Iron Slug is getting a buff in an Iron Slug vs. Callahan thread)
"Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."
~C.S. Lewis.
"Higher energ prices cause people to be stingier every day."
we are stingy with everybody.
F2P is "scared" of what prices P2P can think of for CE so they try their best to shut them up
P2P is "scared" some one might hear the F2P complains and put a low crown limit on CE and they wouldnt profit.
ps i need a better word than scared.
we need to be moderate with stuff. thts all i need to say
Trolls may insult anyone they see. The trick is to be stealthy.
But seriously, a lot of the problem is elitism, spendism, and ego. Some elitists will fire insults at the rate of a Max ASI Pepperbox at anyone who doesn't agree with them or breaks one of their "rules"- sometimes not checking to see if it was an accident. Spendism... obviously p2ps hate on f2ps, and f2ps hate on p2ps. (See also: political parties.) And people don't like it when their ego is so much as poked- like, say, when someone respectfully disagrees with them- and they get all defensive, firing insults as fast as the elitists. All this gets people in a foul mood, and they're more likely to post something negative, which is seen by others, who... are more likely to post something negative as a result of that. It's a vicious cycle.
I never notice this in the Treasure Vault, though; likely this is because everyone's too busy saying "Man that's awesome" or breaking out non-barbed humor. (Granted, I haven't read many of the fanfics, but the art and SpiralSpy threads usually don't have angry people in them.) Also, it doesn't usually happen in big, well-thought-out suggestions (at least, those that haven't been discussed before) because people are saying "Dang, awesome idea, I hope OOO implements this!" or things along that line, as well as many extra ideas that are (usually) offered in a friendly manner. Maybe we should get around to more compliments. That seems like it'll help.
Also, a CE Promo with capes could lower prices, making people less likely to post angry "the prices are too high" threads. Come on devs... you know we'd want capes.
you know we'd want capes."
NO. I do not want capes. This belongs in the suggestion forums. This belongs in the suggestion forums. This belongs in the suggestion forums. This belongs in the suggestion forums. Does not compute. Does not compute. Does not compvvvvvwwhwewvhwvhwvxpkxpkxpxk.
How about elf ears?
Those would be neat.
Elves are cool.
"Spendism... obviously p2ps hate on f2ps, and f2ps hate on p2ps. (See also: political parties.)"
Opinions posted as facts also lead to disagreements that lead to fights/insults. I hope you honestly don't think that is true (the quoted part).
Hiiiiiii!
*reads thread*
*backs out*
Byeeeeee!
A lot of people have been here for a year or more. I occasionally find gems on the forums, but with the annoying Drupal system, and lack of deep content, most of my time here's just wasted.
I usually lurk until I'm sure I can make a valuable contribution. This means I'm deterred from making remarks on long threads, because most of the time it's not worth my effort to correct someone that won't listen. Some who use excessive insults clearly don't examine their posts before submitting.
Just throwing in my two cents over the F2P and P2P hate...
F2P hating on P2P probably comes from some sort of jealously. The entire structure of the game tends to offer at least two paths for the player to take: The easier path that demands additional $$$, or the harder path that demands additional time. A lot of people feel cheated when someone can spend $20 and then bypass several weeks worth of farming, especially when most (including myself) are unemployed teenagers who don't have the disposable income to spend on SK. Then people like to assume that OOO is greedy and such, while pointing to OCH as proof.
I'm not entirely sure where the P2P hate against F2P comes in. My main guess is a reaction to the above. While yes, P2P do leap through several weeks worth of farming in a few clicks and a credit card number, most people (who aren't P2P) don't realize that they had to get the original $$$ somehow. Most P2P have an actual job, working for an income. When someone then points at your hard earned income and calls you lazy because you spent hours and hours working... well that isn't exactly going to go over well.
In addition, a lot of the CE price problems come from the F2P group, more than the P2P group. However, F2P tend to wrongly accuse P2P of manipulating the market for a profit, causing the CE price to reach 8k. While that may be partially true, it isn't something that encompasses the entire P2P base. The P2P group is the only thing that prevents the CE price from extending past 10k, by buying and selling CE with $$$. When the F2P group increases in size, the CE price dramatically increases. I believe the CE price went up several hundred (if not thousand) around the time SK came to Steam. Regardless, most of the CE price increases stem from a huge amount of players using CE without spending $$$. Said players hypocritically point the blame at the P2P group, which in turn, adds to the hate.
And then to top it all off, people tend to be jealous of rich people. Elitism and such. It exists in the real world, it exists in politics, so it'll exist in Spiral Knights.
"I'm not entirely sure where the P2P hate against F2P comes in."
Think of it this way: Someone comes along, tells you how unfair it is that they have to go work their virtual posteriors in the game to get the gear they want and accuse you of taking the easy way out and buying every drop of CE you need, then keep the rest/or more to yourself, selling for higher and higher prices instead of being nice and selling it for lower prices to those who 'need' it.
Basically some F2P thought of the P2P as lousy cheats that bought their way to where they are now, and the P2P, to put it mildly, didn't take kindly to the accusations.
Like the first time I played LD with my Rocket hammer. It being the first time I played LD in a while, I made the silly mistake of saying 'Woah, this Hammer is really effective' in the Team Chat after killing someone with the attack dash. Someone on my team, a somewhat forum-goer, promptly replied 'Pay to win'.
Even after I said the pack was gifted, said person still replied 'some had to pay for it'.
The accusations and unnecessary hate just get annoying.
That, and other P2P are annoyed at the whining of 'SUPPOSEDLY' F2P about the market and things, some even retorting that they should stop being so lazy and fork out some cash for the game the moment they hear 'F2P'.
Something like that anyway.
I always found it amusing when F2P players complained about P2P players. This game is still around because they're willing to support the company.
I don't care if someone hates on me for being P2P. I work for a living and I am in college for engineering so I don't have 12 hours a day to farm crowns like some unemployed players do.
Human nature, and teenagers.
It's human nature to complain, then teenagers get upset much more quickly than more mature people, leading to personal insults. Personally, I understand that the F2P and P2P players need each other to keep the SK economy running, and I respect P2Pers for that.
And, before one of you starts raging that I wouldn't know about teenagers, I am one myself. Please actually think before you rage, or, better, don't rage at all. I know sometimes you need to 'let it out', but don't do it here.
This is a game, people. Don't hate it for that.
P2P are such noobsssss!!!!! They should WORK!! D:<
Lol. Just kidding about that^, but I had to troll for a second there.
Anyways, I don't see why F2P hate so much on the P2P. I'm a purely free player who has many, many, many 5* items along with 250k cr atm. STOP BLAMING OTHERS FOR YOUR INABILITY TO MANAGE YOURSELVES F2Pers. Tis all I have to say....
~meis (teh troll)
These forums make you bitter and angry from all the .. stupidity radiating from some topics.
I've been looking, and as Eurydice has kindly pleaded against, there has been an increase in personal insults. I'd like to know why you think this is occurring. Well this is humanity, what did you expect. ¬¬
Having low tolerance is popular & things that are popular will be copied by other people because that's how peer pressure & how TeH KeWl K1dZ work.
Bump, and some may know why I'm bumping this :/
(It's still true, the topic of this thread)
I feel that "insults" made over the internet, especially in online gaming, shouldn't even be considered "insulting" in the first place.
The growing number of ill tempered children that takes offense to "trash talk"--no matter how slight or trivial--is lamentable, but quite funny to watch in most cases.
Take someone whom we will just call "T-haus" for instance, who on many occasions would throw serious fits at me, just for having jokingly mocked him. I would tease him for a second, then he would start fuming and come back two minutes later with an elaborate but hostile reply. The fact that he actually takes the time to devise a lengthy counter-insult is a bit frightening, and exemplifies how susceptible immature and underage gamers are to the slightest of provocations.
I think that this phenomena of online gamers taking insults seriously, could be attributed to their general lack of a social life, brought upon by excessive exposure to video games. Thus, my suggestion to the parents of "T-haus" and his angry colleagues is to:
- limit their playing hours
- promote the merits of "life outside the room"
- find them a more productive hobby like basketball or football
Ultimately, gamers should understand that there really is no value contained in words thrown around on the the internet. It is also needless to say that gaming itself shouldnt ever be taken seriously.
Shallow & Pedantic.
