I'm happy to start this fanfic. It SHALL NOT fall to my idiotic ending of my fanfics. Don't worry, my short story thread can still be found here:

((FROM THE FUTURE: And here's the link to the sequel:

Anway, I realized I am better at fighting scenes than normal scenes. And so, Battlefield popped out of my head and onto my computer screen.

Heres that there prologue. Oh and im gonna do that Dramatic thing I did with my other fanfic. Yea, this thing:

-------------------------
Prologue

Andrew ran as fast as he could. The gremlins were coming. To get him. He passed the dead bodies of many of his men and started to weep. Tears fell down his face. He couldn't believe such a great plan could've gone so wrong.

Andrew looked over his shoulder. The gremlins had called upon their scuttlebot creations to aid them in battle. For this reason, he ran faster. A town came into view. Haven. Several knights stood outside it, guarding the doors. Once they saw Andrew coming, they hurriedly opened the gates. He ran through the arch way. The knights followed him and pulled the gates shut. There was a long chorus of clanking metal and screeches as the battalion outside stood still.

The gremlins were not happy.

All of the knights who had been guarding the doors threw themselves up against them to keep them shut. Andrew did the same. Finally, the gremlins left. Or so they thought. Once the area was clear, the knights went outside again to guard the gates.

Andrew left them to walk through the town. Haven seemed...different. The town had been hit hard by the war. As he walked through, Andrew got many jealous and annoyed glances from those who looked at his brightly colored Azure Guardian Armor. He felt bad. All these spirilians from towns everywhere had taken refuge from the gremlins.

Andrew had to ignore their pleas for food for the time being. He had to tell Feron about the Spiral Army's status in the war. He jogged into the arcade where Feron stood, waiting. The arcade didn't even look like the arcade anymore. The elevators had all fallen into a deep chasm that had opened with an earthquake (caused by the gremlins, more or less). Only one remained. Sullivan had betrayed the knights and gone to live with his devilite brothers to hide from the gremlins.

Everything felt strange to Andrew.

"Guardian Lern, what happened out there?" Feron asked Andrew.

Feron could tell Andrew had been through a lot by looking at the condition of his armor. It had been shredded, burnt, broken, ripped, and destroyed.

Andrew responded, "We...they...they overwhelmed us. We fought and fought. But we couldn't beat them. Seerus...Seerus was with them."

Feron was surprised. "Seerus? What the hell was Seerus doing there? I thought we had gotten rid of him in that last expedition."

"It seems the gremlins deceived us," Andrew stated.

Feron waved his hand to Andrew, motioning for him to follow. They walked over to a table standing where Sullivan had once worked. A map was spread across it. It had all the areas surrounding Haven written onto it.

"We are here," Feron pointed to a drawing of a small building. "The gremlins are coming from here and here. At least, these are the areas we know them to come from." He pointed to two drawings of gears in the corners of the map.

Feron continued, "We need to enter one of these two gremlin outposts to dispatch of the threat from the inside. We can't get into a situation where we are locked in. We need to make a move. Now."

Andrew nodded. "And I expect you want me to go?"

"Yes, actually. Along with a few other knights. You all will enter the gremlin outpost and get rid of any power sources. Then, I want you to destroy Seerus, once and for all," Feron explained.

"This war keeps getting harder and harder to win," Andrew said.

Feron agreed, "Yes. Because this is the Gremlin War."

NOTES:

*In this story, you could consider a Guardian a Vanguard. "Guardians have power in our Army" -Feron

*No revives or health pills. "A creature that is dead stays dead." -Feron

*In this story, the clockworks are merely an underground home for many creatures. I expect most come up to hunt, or for similar reasons. "Many animals come on the surface to hunt for food." -Andrew

Chapter One

The Beginning of a Squad

Feron sat in a chair in front of the Auction House. Or what was left of it. He was waiting for his newly made squad to arrive. He grinned as he saw Andrew, Damien, Jane, Fred, Mary, Greg, and Noah walking towards him. He remembered how they had all come to join the fight for liberation over Cradle.

Andrew had been a knight in the Spiral Army for as long as anyone could remember. When the gremlins first attacked, many of both sides were killed. Several Guardian Knights were killed. Andrew took the spot of Guardian after his father, Jeffrey, had died. He had developed leadership skills quickly. This is why Feron chose him to be the Squad Leader.

Damien was a recon knight. He would play a sport in the Stadium called Lockdown often. He rose through the ranks of Players and came out on top. He injured many knights. All feared meeting him in a fight. When the Stadium was destroyed, Damien was heartbroken. He left Haven for a few days to see how he would fare in the wild. One week later, Damien was seen hobbling into Haven, leaning his weight on his Gran Faust. The medics took him in and patched him up. Damien told the rest he had been attacked by gremlins and had come back to join the war. Feron thought it only right enough to grant Damien the position of Recon.

Jane was a normal civilian before the war. When her husband was killed fighting the gremlins, she got angry at the world. She would throw tantrums at any who annoyed her the slightest bit. Captain Ozlo himself convinced her to not dawn on the past, but change the future. She finally calmed down and agreed with him. Jane decided then to help knights on and off the battlefield. She became a Medic. She felt happy helping knights not share the same fate as her husband. She saved many lives. That is why Feron deemed her worthy of being the squad Medic.

Fred was your lonely hermit. He lived secluded from the rest of the spirilian population. Down in the depths of the clockworks he had found scattered weapons left by knights who were long gone. Fred enjoyed the "boom boxes" the most. He would place them on the ground, then run away as fast as he could and see how far he could get before they blew up. Fred took four of these boom boxes up with him when he, for the first time, went up to Haven instead of descending. He was greeted by screams of many dying. Fred ran right into Feron while he was panicking. Feron looked at him and told him to follow. They arrived in a training hall. Feron told Fred to show him what he could do with the weapons. He proved to be a great bomber. And because of this, Feron made Fred the Squad Bomber.

Mary grew up with guns. Her parents had left her in a dark alley in Haven to fend for herself when she was young. Mary had only been 6 years old. She didn't understand why her parents had left. She wandered out of the alley and saw no one. She ended up crawling into a master gunner's workshop. He raised her as his own and treated her much better than her old parents. When she was 8, he taught her how to use guns. Mary was a natural. When she was a young adult, she got a blitz needle. And that was just the beginning. She collected many other guns after that, including Valiance and the Sentenza. The Polaris and the Argent Peacemaker. The Umbra Driver and the Biohazard. She used them all professionally too. So, Feron granted her the position of Squad Gunner.

Greg was a nobody in the Spiral Army. He had no relations to any high-ranking members. Ozlo and Feron didn't even know his name. When a Lichen Colony had managed to find its way into Haven, Feron asked if anyone would like to go get rid of it. Everyone stepped aside except for Greg, who couldn't hear what Feron had said. So, naturally, Greg was sent to go kill it. And to many's surprise, he came back alive! They all asked how he had done it, and Greg told them he had used an Umbra Driver for the most part, a Faust when it got close to him, and a Dark Reprisal to hurt it while he was attacking with the gun or the sword. Feron was proud of Greg. He had used all the weapon types together for maximum effect. Ferom decided Greg should be the All-Around for the Squad.

Noah was a mysterious one. No one knows where he came from, nor if he even is a spirilian. He always keeps a Chaos Set wrapped around him as to crush all possiblities of his face being shown. Even though Noah seemed to pop out of nowhere, everyone knows how good he is with a sword. He has a large array of them. Rigadoon, Flourish, Snarble Barb. Every lightweight sword he finds is his new best friend. He can use them very fluently. Some say he used to be an assassin in his past. Others say he is a construct spy made by the gremlins to destroy the knights. But all say he isn't going to be killed by any normal monster, or knight for that matter. Despite his gear, Noah was made Squad Striker by Feron.

Feron was happy with this band of knights with many different personalities he had brought together. He knew they were the right choice for this mission. They all sat in chairs facing Feron. Feron told each of them who everyone was and what part they would play in the Squad. They all seemed happy with what they were except for Noah.

"I am not the leader..." Noah sighed.

Feron agreed, "Indeed. Andrew is a Guardian. Guardians have power in our Army. Andrew has been a leader before, he shall be one again."

"So be it," Noah decided after a few seconds of thinking.

Chapter Two

See You Later, Squad

Feron explained to the Squad the details of the mission. It was crucial that they destroy the gremlin power sources. If they did so, the gremlins wouldn’t have any of their constructs helping them and it would be much easier to win the war.

Feron told everyone to go get ready because they were to move out in two hours. Feron himself stood up and started pacing back and forth.

“What if they are killed?” He wondered to himself. “If they mess this up, we will most likely lose the war. We are taking a big risk, sending our best men and women out. But they wish to serve, and serve they will.”

Feron ceased his pacing and went to check on Andrew. Andrew was sliding his Leviathan into its scabbard. He turned around and saw Feron standing at the doorway.

“Feron! You startled me,” Andrew said.

Feron replied, “Oh, sorry. I needed to talk strategy with you.”

Feron led Andrew back to the map. He pointed to the drawing of the building. “Show me the path you plan to take,” he demanded.

“Well, I have decided to take down the northern outpost. We will first go as far north as we can, to the other side of the mountains. Then, we will head west till we reach the gremlin outpost,” Andrew said.

“Wouldn’t that mean you are going through the snow wolver territory?” Feron examined.

Andrew answered, “I intend to.”

“Good luck. I hope you will lead your Squad to victory.”

Andrew grinned and started walking out of the room.

Feron shouted, “Wait! Take the map with you. You may need it.”

Andrew gladly accepted it and continued out of the room. Feron couldn’t hold in his pride. He had treated Andrew Lern like his son after Jeffrey Lern had died. Andrew was just like his father.

^*^*^*^

The Squad was ready to leave for the north. Every member had their armor equipped. They had all been given three fire vials, to start a fire if it got too cold. What was left of the Army stood saluting them as the Squad exited the town. As they walked through the gate, Andrew noticed a gremlin trying to apply explosives to the wall.

“Stop right there!” he shouted. Before Andrew could do anything, Noah ran over and cut the gremlin’s head off. Then he started continuously jabbing his Acheron into its stomach. Feron ran over and told Noah to stop.

“Stop, Noah. It is dead.”

Noah replied, “It might have gotten up again.”

“You cut its head off! A creature that is dead stays dead,” Feron explained.

“As you demand, I will stop,” Noah sighed.

Then the Squad started marching away. “Andrew,” Feron called.

“Yes?” Andrew asked.

Feron answered, “Keep an eye on Noah. We don’t know what he is capable of…”

“Yes sir.”

And with those words, Feron’s Squad walked over a tall hill and out of sight. Feron couldn’t help but smile. For the first time, Feron felt no hesitation. He knew they were the right squad for the job.

Chapter Three

Survival in the Wilderness

As the Squad walked down the hill, Andrew couldn't help but hear explosions in the distance. He told the rest of the squad to wait while he went to see something. Andrew walked back up the hill and was surprised by what he saw. Haven was under seige. Gremlin demos were blowing up the town walls as thwackers ran in to take out the Army. Andrew started running back to help.

"Guardian Lern!" Jane yelled. "Wait!"

Andrew asked, "We need to help them!"

"No." Jane demanded. "Its the Army's job to guard the fort, but our's to take out Seerus and the gremlin's power."

"But we can't just leave them there!" Andrew shouted. "We HAVE to help!"

Mary came over to them. "Jane is right. This is our job. No matter what is to become of Haven without us there, we need to press on," she said.

Andrew calmed down and agreed. He walked back up the hill to the rest of the squad. He shouted, "Lets advance," and headed forward. The rest followed him. For some reason Andrew thought Noah was glancing at him more. Probably nothing. The group went over several hills before they came to a long plain.

Andrew thought he could see wolvers frollicking in the grass. He smiled. What a beautiful family.

"Look, wolvers. Lets get rid of 'em," Damien announced.

"No," Andrew said. "We should leave them alone. They're a happy family."

Damien was annoyed, "Happy family? This isn't fairy land, brotha. We need to fight to survive out here in the wilderness. Besides, they shouldn't even be on the surface. Lets teach 'em a lesson to stay in their rightful place." He cracked his knuckles.

"No." Andrew demanded. "They are up here to hunt. Many animals come on the surface to hunt for food."

"Ok, so when I see a gremlin blow you up, I'll be sure to leave it be."

Andrew ignored Damien's last comment. He told the squad to follow him. He led them along the edge of the plain, keeping away from the wolvers. He didn't want to provoke them and get them killed. Too late for that. A wolver spotted the squad. It dashed towards them as fast as lightning. Noah did an easy side-step and gutted the wolver in the throat. That was not the right thing to do.

Now several wolvers were speeding towards the group, led by an Alpha wolver.

Fred yelled, "A big boom box goes..."

All the wolvers ran into the blast radius of Fred's Nitronome.

"BOOM!"

"Nice one, Fred!" Andrew congratulated.

Fred showed a sign of approval. Andrew told the rest of the squad they had to keep moving and that they would rest once they got to the end of the plain. They walked for hours under the hot, burning sun.

"We are baking in this heat! Can't we rest?" Damien asked.

Andrew responded, "Would you rather rest under this scorching sun, or under the cool shade of the trees?"

"Good point," Damien said defeatedly.

And so, the group continued. They wandered for hours before they finally found the edge of the plain and entered the forest.

"We'll stay here for the night," Andrew commanded.

They set up camp and went to sleep.

Chapter Four

Over the River and Through the Woods!

"Andrew," a young voice whispered. "Andrew, wake up."

Andrew opened his eyes and met those of Greg.

"What?" Andrew asked.

Greg answered, "I woke up and this fire was burning. And Noah is nowhere to be seen."

Andrew wondered, "Noah? You can't find Noah? Well where could he be?"

"I don't know. As soon as I noticed he was gone, I came to you."

Andrew grinned a weak smile. "Good idea."

Andrew inspected the fire. He could see the remnants of a fire vial buried beneath the burning branches. He turned around and saw a piece of paper pinned to a tree not far from the campsite.

Beware of Snarbolax

Andrew could only wonder what that meant. He had fought several snarbolaxes in his time, and they were pretty easy to take care of. He didn't know what the sign was for. Probably cautious knights taking safety precautions.

He shrugged the sign off. "Lets wake up the others," Andrew said.

One by one, each of the members were waken up and told of the situation.

"I thought something was strange about that guy," Damien commented.

All of them said something similar. Then they packed up their things and got moving. The woods were very thick, and they had to stick close together to not get lost. But of course, someone got lost anyway.

The Squad was walking through a particularly dense grove when Jane turned around and saw that Fred wasn't behind her anymore.

"Hey, is Fred up there with you guys in the front?" she shouted.

Mary called back, "No. I thought he was back with you."

They all stopped. "Fred isn't here," Jane said.

"Damn," Andrew said. "We're gonna have to go back and look for him."

"We can't go back. We don't know when we lost him. We don't know where to look. Maybe he saw Noah and went to get him," Damien guessed.

"Lets hope," Greg said.

They continued onward until they came to a nice little clearing with a river flowing in the middle.

"Fill your canteens now," Andrew demanded.

And so, they all did. They were just about ready to move forward again when Greg thought he heard a snarl.

"Wait," Greg ordered. "I think I just heard something."

Andrew stopped. "I think I hear something too."

Andrew barely finished his sentence before a large beast bounded into the clearing.

"Sn..Snu...Snu..." Damien started.

"Snarbolax," Mary finished.

This snarbolax was like none Andrew had ever seen before. It was twenty feet tall, covered in dark shadowy fur from head to toe. Red spikes ran all down its back. Its eyes flickered like a bright red flame. Five sets of teeth fit in its mouth, each tooth sharper than a Snarble Barb.

"Get ready!" Andrew shouted.

They all drew their weapons. Andrew charged forward, Leviathan in hand, and took a swing at the great shadow. Its easily jumped out of the way and lashed back with its tail. Andrew was smacked into a nearby tree.

"Get...get...get across...the river," Andrew commanded.

Damien hopped across several stones and was on the other side. Jane and Greg followed him. However, Mary was more courageous than those two. She shot her Argent Peacemaker like crazy. The snarbolax was screeching and snarling.

"GO!" Andrew yelled.

Mary heeded his command and got on the other side of the river. Andrew pulled himself up. He ran towards the beast, this time prepared. He swung his Leviathan and missed yet again. When the snarbolax tried to hit him back, Andrew ducked. He then took his sword and flung it up. It struck the snarbolax in the lower jaw.

Andrew pulled it out again and stabbed it right into the creature's eye. He pulled his Leviathan out yet again and smacked it into the beast's stomach. It was dead. Andrew grinned.

He was starting to walk towards the river when another snarbolax popped out fom behind the trees. And another. And another. Andrew knew he couldn't handle three snarbolaxes. One guarded the river, to prevent any ideas of escaping.

The other two got ready to pounce on Andrew. He could feel it in his gut. This was it. He was going to die.

Suddenly, Fred swung down into the clearing on a vine. He picked up Andrew and they both jumped off the vine onto the other side of the river.

"Fred!" Andrew was glad to see him. "You just saved my life!"

Fred smiled, "All in a day's work."

"Where were you?" Jane asked.

Fred answered, "Chasing this."

He opened his hands and a silkwing flew out. It fluttered away deeper into the forest.

"A Silkwing. A Silkwing. Why would you- nevermind..." Damien said.

The Squad ran away from the river. The snarbolaxes wouldn't cross it. Everyone knows shadows hate water, right? The group stopped to rest for a minute; they were tired out.

"Ok, we wasted precious time with those snarbolaxes. We gotta get moving," Andrew ordered.

The Squad went off north, in the direction of the mountains.

Chapter Five

Deeper Into the Forest

The Squad trudged along between the trees. More vines hung down. The sky wasn't visible because of the large branches draping over the group. The fight with the snarbolaxes had left Mary shaken. Their Squad Leader had almost been killed!

Not much of a warrior. Mary was sure she would be able to beat him up if she wanted to.

"Urph." Andrew tripped on a fallen branch.

'Yup,' Mary thought. 'I could definitely beat him up.'

It wasn't long before Damien asked, "Are we there yet?"

Andrew looked at him, showed a sign of disapproval, and turned back around. Damien got the message. The undergrowth began to trip all of them eventually. Greg proposed they have a scout to look ahead for particularly large vines and such.

He suggested Damien for the job.

"He is a recon and all," Greg announced.

The rest agreed with Greg's reasoning and sent Damien forth.

He found several things that might have tripped his fellow members. Vines, leaves, branches. More things of the like. When Damien had gone a couple hundred feet ahead of the rest, he saw a light up ahead. He went to investigate.

The light got brighter and brighter as Damien ran towards it. He stopped. It wasn't the end of the forest. It was a lantern. Damien picked it up. It looked to be recently lit. The flame was still young. Words were engraved in the bottom.

Construct B1173D6

Damien could only wonder what that meant. Firmly clutching the lantern, he ran back to the Squad.

"Andrew," Damien said. "I found this up ahead."

Andrew inspected it. "Construct B1173D6? What is that supposed to mean?"

Mary frowned, "Gremlins."

"Take...out...your weapons," Andrew demanded. "Damien, stay with us. Strength in numbers."

The group headed forward cautiously. After traveling for half an hour, they sheathed their weapons. The woods were so dense now, the lantern was their only light.

Chirping could be heard from all directions. Andrew didn't like the feeling of this place. Suddenly, a snarbolax pounced on him, breaking the lantern. And another came. And another.

It was the three same snarbolaxes from earlier! One grabbed Andrew and scratched the whole left side of his face. The other two were busy trashing up the rest of the Squad. Andrew had no idea how they had crossed the river, and he didn't care. The only thought in his mind was that he had to get out of here.

But he didn't have to. A figure jumped onto the beast's back and dug its sword into it. The snarbolax writhed in pain and fell to the ground. The figure made a superhuman leap to the other snarbolax, doing the same to it as it had done to the first. To destroy the last one, the figure stabbed it in the head. Andrew caught a glimpse of shining letters on its forehead before it left.

Construct B1173D6

There it was again. That construct's name. But why would that construct help them? Andrew could only wonder.

"Andrew!" a young male voice shouted, "Where are you!?"

"Right here, Greg." Andrew explained. "Lets light a fire."

Andrew threw a fire vial at the ground and watched as a bonfire was lit. The Squad huddled around it for warmth.

"Andrew, was that you who killed the snarbolaxes?" Damien asked.

"No... It was Construct B1173D6..." Andrew answered.

Andrew came closer into the light of the fire.

"Wait, a gremlin construct helped us kill those-" Mary started.

"Oh, ANDREW!" Jane interrupted. The left side of your face is bleeding like those snarbolaxes!"

Andrew felt his face. Sure enough, it was covered in blood.

"Let me patch that up!"

Jane hurried over to Andrew. She took out some rags and wiped the blood off his face. Underneath the red liquid, the snarbolax had left a hefty scar. But Jane decided the scar was ok to leave uncovered. It was Andrew's eye she was worried about. His eye was almost completely split right down the middle. Blood spewed from it. Jane took out some gauze and wrapped his eye in it. She first placed it over the actual cut, then continuously wrapped it around his head.

"Don't take that gauze off until I say its ok to," Jane ordered.

Andrew nodded. "Its getting late, but I don't feel comfortable sleeping here. It seems we're in the heart of the forest. We should have a guard. Maybe two."

"Who wants to be our guard?" Andrew continued.

Greg raised his hand. "I'll do it!" he announced.

"I better watch him," Mary said. "I guess I'll do it too.

"Me three," Fred joined in.

"Ok, Mary and Greg will take the shift for four hours. Then Fred and I will take their place for another four hours," Andrew explained.

Everyone saluted Andrew. All of them (except Greg and Mary, of course) went to sleep.

The two guards sat on either side of the camp, ready for anything that came their way. They were paying attention to any creature that got within a mile from them.

They were ready.

Whatever happened to the robot? It just saved the whole team's lives and the story shifted attention from the robot really quickly!

Let's just say, the robot

Let's just say, the robot isn't done with the squad. And it was all Janes fault it shifted. She was so worried about Andrews stupid dead eye. Pshaw!

Other news, I drew some concept art for this fanfic. I don't know when or if I will post it.

Chapter Six

In the Night

"Mary?" Greg said.

"Yeah?" Mary asked.

"Do you think Andrew is gonna be ok?"

"Of course. Andrew, as emotional as he may be, is tough. Nothing will stop him from finishing this mission," Mary stated.

Greg thought about that answer. He had been afraid Andrew would want to turn back because of the eye incident. Mary's words reassured him they would keep on going.

A great wind blew across the campsite. Greg and Mary both shivered. The fire was blown out. Mary took out a fire vial and tossed it into the ashes. A new fire started burning.

Greg heard a rustle in the leaves. He stood up, drew his Calibur, and ran over to the source of the noise. He parted the leaves and spotted a young chromalisk.

It looked very scared.

“Go on, little chromalisk. I’m not gonna hurt you,” Greg said.

“Greg? What are you doing over there?” Mary asked.

“Er…nothing,” Greg answered. He gave the chromalisk a small shove away.

Mary walked over. “A chromalisk?” She took out her Argent Peacemaker. Mary aimed it at the chromalisk’s head.

“Stop!” Greg shouted. “Its just a child. Leave it be.”

Mary glared at Greg but submitted. “Fine. Just this once.”

The rest of the watch went on without interruptions. When the four hours were up, Mary woke up Fred and Andrew. They got up and took the guardians’ places. Chirping noises could be heard from the trees, and howls of wolvers echoed through the night.

“Fred, I think you’re a good addition to this little team of ours,” Andrew said. “You’ve saved our butts more than once. Thanks for that, by the way.

“No problem, Andrew. That’s what Squad members are for,” Fred grinned.

Andrew smiled. The four hours went by quick. Soon it was morning, and Andrew and Fred woke the rest. They gathered their belongings and went forward. Andrew was determined to get to the mountains in at least three days.

The rest of the squad agreed; getting out of this forest was a good idea.
