I'm probably guessing that you, the reader, think I'm borderline insane, but it's unfortunately true. The Clockworks were one of the highlights in SK, you get to shape your world the way you want it, you get to have different gates so the experience is different every time, and you have to scour for rare materials a lot harder. Thanks to the mission system, NOBODY visits the clockworks anymore, so it's hard to get teammates. Also, the mission system made grinding a lot easier, so people are dissuaded in going to the clockworks. Plus, the mission rewards of materials, especially rare ones, ruined the rare materials market. And the most important thing is the mission system doesn't have the variability of the clockworks, so every mission is the same. So that's how OOO completely destroyed the Clockworks.
Mission System COMPLETELY DESTROYED the Clockworks
Missions are what SK need. However, it should be integrated into Clockworks, not as a separate module.
If you really wanted activity in the clockworks then OOO should make each level give a small amount of Prestige. T1 gives 10 per level, T2 gives 20, and T3 gives 30. If it were like that I would grind clockworks all day.
Prestige is WORTHLESS!
If they wanted activity in the clockworks, they should buff the Clockworks' payout or make missions non-repeatable (with the exception of maybe the Hall of Heroes).
The mission update was February 22, 2012.
This topic tends to come up in suggestions but often lacks any sort of change to make the Clockworks more appealing.
What does going through the Arcade have over missions? Basil, Shadow Lairs, and potentially a giant series of floors to roll through. What do missions have? Easy access to certain areas and bosses, only a few floors at a time, a storyline to follow, and Basil in the waiting lobby before starting with a few recipes relevant to enemies in the mission. What has been suggested already? Minibosses exclusive to the Arcade have their own token system for new equipment, more Shadow Lairs, cheaper keys for Shadow Lairs, payout increases proportionately to missions (rather than buff the Arcade, lower mission payouts so it seems higher; this is for crowns, materials, and equipment drops), and several other things I am unable to repeat off the top of my noggin.
Obviously minibosses are the answer.
The Party Finder button has helped me a bit, admittedly. It's easier for me to find other people without going through every single tier of every single gate, and hoping for an absence of PUG nightmare.
Then Ive been in Aegis Team for seven months! Maybe more! Thats CRAZY!
Not everyone wants to do vanaduke runs day after day after day.
That said, I'd be more inclined to do clockworks if there were new areas or more arenas.
I feel sorry for the new players these days who have to earn their starting funds without the ability to merch HoH recipes. Each clockworks run was exciting and different and you never knew which recipes would be waiting at the terminal. Now when I get a friend to start playing the game, the only advice I can offer them is to grind RJP over and over because doing anything else is a waste of potential crowns.
Yeah ok. We know it. OOO knows it. Missions are here to stay. Only way to fix this is to increase CW payouts. Won't happen.
@Thrillhaus
Nowadays, recipe runs are just high risk, MASSIVE rewards. If you find a Twisted Targe, a Twisted Snarble Barb, or a Kilowatt Pulsar recipe, you've just made your money back and more.
Suggestion:
1. Reduce crowns earned in boss stratums GREATLY so that players would only do boss content for tokens & not greedy profit money schemes. The newbie players are following this media's way of how they play SK in which they just go straight to FSC and glitch-play their way to making crowns. Lord Vanaduke doesn't even strike fear into them, they're all taking it lightly due to being carried from repetitive grinding players who tell them that Vanaduke isn't hard and it's misleading this community even more. Repetitiveness does not mean you are skillful.
2. Arcade should be the only content that gives the most payout, that and OCHM. Players need a reason to do content, the biggest reason right now for them to play SK is for crowns and tokens. We need to put FUN CONTENT with what they players want which is CROWNS. I hate how they talk a lot of baby poop of how SK is too easy yet they hardly touch the Arcade. They don't know squat. Soloing doesn't mean anything, full party runs is where the challenges are. Stop avoiding underworld/undercity(devilite place) as well.
3. There are too many missions. Just leave the really hard and important missions; we don't need Arcade content in mission content.. Spiral Knights is loosing a lot of socialism. SK community is becoming a Diablo 3 community. I'm sure Three Rings didn't want this to happen, not this type of community that we play for crowns and not because of the content of the game. There are more complaints than content appreciation. If we received new content, I bet nothing would have changed. They'd just hit whatever gave the most profit.
This is my laptop's desktop: http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd475/HectorUribe/kirisame.png
I am not like most of the community in Spiral Knights that are hardcore gamers and have a roster of dozens of game they play. I haven't had/played a console since 2007 back when I was in high school. I'm guessing majority of SK's community are gamers that have been gaming for years are know a lot of things about how games work & should work. I've played about three or 4 other games on my PC besides Spiral Knights. I am not being bias on what I'm saying for my own personal feelings, I am speaking for how a casual or a newbie player would feel under this game's community & social activity's circumstances. It's not like every time we're online in SK that our in-game friends will or will not want to do what we want or that they would even be online.
My random party group issues are mostly targeted on the veteran gamers of this game; the skillful ones so what I am saying now should not be in anyway relevant with my PUG raging.
Personal feelings BUT NOT WHAT SHOULD BE SUGGESTED:
1. Remove UV & all UV content because it's the cause of all greed in Spiral Knights.
2. Remove accessories since the more things we want, the more greedy we become.
SK was a better community in those days ~ Preview and first 4 months of launch <3
P.S.: REMOVE FEES IN THE ARCADE, STOP REPELING US FROM DOING IT. 500 CRS TO JOIN TIER 3?!? ISN'T MY ENERGY ENOUGH THREE RINGS!?! WHERE ARE ALL THOSE CROWNS EVEN GOING TO.................. WOW...
Or is not us having fun part of the CE balance and promotions so we buy CE to have fun?
" Remove UV & all UV content because it's the cause of all greed in Spiral Knights."

The endgame would be over so quickly. I could understand you saying that for LD but... my max curse arcane salamander... don't take it away Kittypaws ;_;

On Crown Balance and the Arcade-
First of all, OOOs want players in the arcade. Not so much but still occasionally in the missions. The arcade should be the main attraction to playing, as it is mysterious and random and awesome and more importantly, the only way that guilds can really control the game at all. It gives them something to strive for. But I'll get to that later.
People don't play the arcade because of the way that missions give out more crowns and are faster and easier. Want to make a quick predictable 2.5K cr for your mist? Go do jelly king. Everyone knows that odd numbered stratums don't pay well. This made 100% perfect sense before the mission update came out, and was in fact good game design. But it became quite a vestigial feature once I got the ability to go directly to an even stratum- and the odd stratums are represented by the arcade. So here is what must happen- the clockworks and the mission payout must be separated. Don't ditch your old method of payout, but make it profitable. No T2 level should pay less than the first level of jelly king (800 cr), and no T3 level should pay less than the first level of FSC (1000 cr or so). Well, that isn't exactly correct, but it should be balanced based on the following criteria:
-Time to completion
-Tier
-Effort required to get there
-Difficulty to play through
-The alternative levels that I could be playing on
-The price of energy
So if I'm on a random clockworks level at the start of T3, I'm going to need to get paid more than the first level of jelly king palace, but a bit less than the first level of FSC, as FSC levels take a while to complete while clockwork tunnels are much shorter. You, OOO, keep the energy price at about 6.5K per hundred via promotions and sinks. Thus, lets look at some imaginary statistics-
Level____Time_____Difficulty (out of 5)____payout_______Difficulty to get to (out of 5)
JK-1_____5 min__________3____________800 cr_________________1
FSC-1____6 min_________4____________1000 cr________________4
CT-1_____4 min__________3____________900 cr_________________3
Now why on earth would a 4 minute level pay more than a 5 minute one with equal difficulty? Because its harder to get to, and you should be doing boss runs almost solely for the items you get there. Look at ICMF, people have fun with it, and then they move on to occasionally do it again. Its not the biggest part of the game, but it is something, and it lets people have fun for a bit on it. But unlike FSC, it does not become the entire game for people (most of the time). We want Jelly King's prize to be what is of value most to people, and currently, it is not (again with the 'I'll get to it later'). About 3 months ago, it might have been argued that buffing such levels would ruin the game. But now it has been forcefully proven that giving the ability to start out at a specific place in the clockworks will not crash the market any more than it already is crashed.
I just went and played through an entire T3 stratum. I made about 7K, which means that I'm making about 600-700 cr per level if I don't cheat or manipulate the game by waiting on arenas or run nothing but FSC. Needless to say, my mats were OK, but then the same holds true for mats on FSC (for the most part). Oh, and did I mention that I did 2 danger rooms to make that 7K? Also note that the only reason that I made that much was because I did both stratums. The first stratum paid about 3K, and the second about 4K.
I am happy about the changes to RJP's payout as well as the arena-mission's payouts, but I'm going to have to say that all you've done is made the T2 players have to work harder. I'd recommend nerfing mission FSC's payout as well, and raising the amount the clockworks pays to fix this.
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows
Everybody knows, everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

What I'm saying is:
WE DON'T HAVE THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN DOING FUN CONTENT. IT BEING FUN WON'T GIVE US BENEFITS; BENEFITS WE WOULD LIKE.
"Missions ruined the Clockworks"
Water's wet, FSC is hot, giants are big, and Microsoft stinks
Yeah, we know the system killed the clockworks basically, but it is STILL OPTIONAL.
You dont HAVE to grind FSC out 40 times a week to profit. You could play the game for fun and actualy go to the Arcade and try it out once maybe, but its the fact that everyone is so greedy and dependent on FSC that they dont want to waste 1 drop of energy on anything but cr profit.
Me? I waste CE revs like I have a million CE, even though I dont. Why? Because I can.
Simply put: You're 5 months late, everyone knows, no one cares, DEAL WITH IT.
" Microsoft stinks "
Thank you. Sooo much.
The mission system has been added to the game about 5 month ago. But you are posting this rage thread now. /sigh
Honestly.. I dislike it too. It make a grinding a lot easier. I miss the old time, where we were grinding so hard to get recipe and material. But now.. it seem like this game made it a lot easier. I hate it. Prestige mission is suck too. Expansion... very suck! But that is my thought before.
But everything change. Now they add a new costume, new danger room, new Lockdown stage, new Rescue Camp and more. Now I realize. Three Rings was working so hard for us.. We should not make a rage thread like this to attack Three Rings. I'm sure the new content will coming out soon, where people will love it so much.
The reason why the mission system is added to game because:
> For new players to understand this game.
> For fun, of course.
> More story line about Spiral Knights
So that's how OOO completely destroyed the clockworks.
You can make a thread where you disagree this content. But please use appropriate word. Not like this.
Lol sorry. I was too emotional :p
