buy owlite or horned owlite in AH directly since they are fairly cheap, craft the rest of the path..
grey owlite is a great shield, however i do think COA serves better at FSC and LoA, provided that you already have BC.
btw no direct comparasion can be made because of the defense nature.:P

I'm also going to recommend the Grey Owlite, It's actually just as useful in FSC as CoA, plus it's easier to get because of Hall of Heros. Elemental damage seems to be more prevalent than shadow since there seems to be a source of elemental damage weather it's enemies or traps.

Niether is better, one is better for fiends/undeads (stupid shock devilite's and kat's) and the other is better for gremlins and constructs.

Plan your crafting around
Plan your crafting around days when you don't play. That will allow you to defray 350ce of crafting costs for the grey owlite shield, or 100 CE off the crest of Almire.
Also, note that it's possible to mass-craft 2* owlite shields for a good UV- done patiently, this is an easy way to convert unused mist energy into a better shield. Crest of Almire UVs are harder to come by, because you only get one try (= one crafting step). After that, you're limited to expensive UV rolls.
Overall, I'm glad that I made my grey owlite first- it's a great shield- but the crest of Almire is very useful in the large number of undead-themed endgame levels.

Eventually you should get both, because they are great shields for their respective damage types. But I think that you should get Grey Owlite first, because it is more widely useful, for two reasons. First, a shield is important when you're facing a crowd of turrets, and gun puppies are more prevalent than howlitzers. Second, the floor traps that inflict fire and shock first inflict some elemental damage, so GOS holds up better against them than does CoA.
