Two. Whole. Years.

By the end of today (or maybe tomorrow), I will have been here for exactly two years.
It's a pretty long time to be with a game.

I was thinking about doing something interesting, like a second art competition or a question and answer thread for people to ask what the game was like two years ago. But I'm not going to go out of my way to make a second art competition or question and answer thread unless people are actually interested, because I don't want the entire thread to be the typical 'I don't care' or 'Who are you?' responses I see plastered all over this forum.

So say something constructive or interesting and I might do something constructive and interesting.

What was the sleep citadel like? (or whatever it was called)

I get the impression that there were a lot of big open spaces back then (like the BN prototype, or was that the LD prototype?)
Would you say things since then have trended towards smaller rooms?

Did you ever get a Zee core?

maybe doing a clockworks run with someone to get their interest. like you pick a random number on your thread and you tell that person if they want to do a run with you so him/her can ask you some questions about the game these 2 years.

The Shrine of Slumber was actually a really cool set of levels.
The tileset was the same as the night-time Aurora Isles ones.
But it had the Blue Lichen in it.
Generally Sleep wasn't a threatening status. As long as you had a gun or a bomb to stay out of the Sloombargo's sleep dust you were fine.
But it had some really nice gate puzzles in it.

I get the impression that there were a lot of big open spaces back then (like the BN prototype) Would you say things since then have trended towards smaller rooms?
I think the removal of a lot of the old pre-fabricated levels in place of adding more themed levels made the levels seem more claustrophobic by adding more hallways. But I don't really remember the game trending towards small spaces. The level designs are usually pretty well paced in that regard.

Did you ever get a Zee core?
I had quite a number of them in beta.
I don't have any now, though.
Not that they were ever used for anything.

I started about August of 2011, but I guess I missed a lot of major changes...

Was Super Brawl redundant, or were there any gimmicks like respawning monsters? Was it as overly competitive as Lockdown?

Was the Tortodrone really too hard for T2 players?

Were bombs like how they were in the trailer, with no charge time but a smaller radius?

What was it like with no binding/Auction House?

Were Vog Cubs any different from normal Wolvers?

What were Menders and Devilites like back then?

Why did they get rid of the Sleep levels entirely without just removing Sleep and replacing it with Stun or something for the time being?

How did Basil work before he appeared in terminals?

Is there any hope for difficulty to exist again, do you think?

People boosted for the lower tier Brawl Crowns since there were hardly any players back then.
There was an event with monsters in it that ran before the beta ended.
I would call Super Brawl redundant, simply because of the amount of damage you could put out with shield cancelling and such.
Gran Faust was the Tip-Top Tier back then.

Was the Tortodrone really too hard for T2 players?
No.
I think they removed him because he had a passive AI. People would see it on screen and panic and attack not knowing that they didn't have to and get stomped by it, since it looked like a sub-boss, considering it's size.
It will probably reappear with the only thing that made it unique removed, to make the game more friendly for idiots with too much money.

Were bombs like how they were in the trailer, with no charge time but a smaller radius?
Yep. That was before the 2010 beta. Back in late 2009 I believe?
You could drop 3 uncharged bombs or 1 charged bomb at a time.
Fun, but not too balanced, I suppose.

What was it like with no binding/Auction House?
Fun. But too easy.
Infinitely more Pay-to-Win than it is now.

Were Vog Cubs any different from normal Wolvers?
They were basically Ash Tails that could set you on fire, from what I remember.

What were Menders and Devilites like back then?
Menders were basically D&D Clerics and Devilites haven't really changed too much.

Why did they get rid of the Sleep levels entirely without just removing Sleep and replacing it with Stun or something for the time being?
Probably because sleep wasn't all too threatening.
Or they want to bring it back, but they don't know what to do with it.

How did Basil work before he appeared in terminals?
In the 2009 beta, he sold High-Tier items for 800cr.
Specifically the Silversix, Graviton Vortex, Divine Avenger and Gran Faust.
As well as Silver Keys, which were used to open Danger Room and Treasure Room gates back then, instead of CE.
But they took those out too for not being user friendly enough.
Before the official release you could invite people to Basil to buy certain recipes.
They removed this with the binding update, I believe.

Is there any hope for difficulty to exist again, do you think?
If they remove CE revives and nerf heart trinkets... Maybe.

There is only one thing I want to know: Tell me of the giant green jelly

Draycos's picture

I'm not a Shoebox, but I can still answer some of those.

Monsters' tracking attacks made the game significantly more difficult than it is now. In fact, it's all Wolvers had going for them- now, it's almost hard to get hit in the first place concerning Wolvers if you're moving.

HoH made it easier for new players to get started, but the inclusion of almost every recipe made the Arcade even more pointless to run. Might have been fine if they reduced the available sets and excluded 4* and 5* recs entirely.

I didn't play in beta, can't answer this one.

Normal weapons were basically the utility weapons, stepping stones so you had something reliable until you had a better variety of gear. Arsenal stations made normal weapons even less useful, since that sense of utility was almost completely nulled.

Dunno who that person is.

Can't say anything about the green jell-o. Never saw it.

Ghret is correct.

Beta, Basil, or now?

I would have loved to have been there for beta all those years ago....
The Giant Green Jelly, Sloombargos, Zee cores, Tortodrones, etc....

So tell me this, was the game better in the beta day with older monsters and items , the middle time of Basil runs and the arcade, or the present time of accessories, missions, and Krogmo?

I for one miss the middle days. Everything wasn't so chaotic back then.

Draycos's picture
Draycos

I'd think of it this way- beta was going pretty good from what I read, then took a turn for the worse when a lot if content got trashed/'will return later'. Basil times climbed up to great again, what with the AH, new items and levels were released at a good rate. Shadow Lairs could have been executed better, though. After missions, everything has been going downhill- enemy nerfs, HoH, supply depot, promos everywhere... Hopefully we're getting another rise in good updates- danger missions are a good start, although they're not too difficult due to prior nerfs. The GH may be a great success or a huge failure- we'll have to see.

Long post ahead

Was the game that much harder before the monster nerfs?

Yeah. In terms of difficulty I would say Vanaduke was at least eight times more difficult back then.
But we also didn't have any 5-star gear. Or even 4-star gear.
No tiers or anything back then.
Funnily enough, the Tier Changes were actually meant to put the solo endgame content in Tier 2 and the Raid (read: Group) content in Tier 3.
But with all the nerfs and energy revives, plus the heart trinkets. It kind of didn't work out.

Did the Hall of Heroes improve or worsen the game?

The depot and Hall of Heroes were designed to take all of the commodities out of recipes and merching non-UV'd items.
I'd say it's at least 1/3rd of the reason the price of CE just steadily rises.

Were there any armors that looked cooler back in beta?

The Blue Fish Armor was cool. I can't remember what it was called.
Also the Kat Hats. But everyone knows what they are.
Expect them back in the game around the same time Half-Life 3 is released.

Did people use Caliburs more before Arsenal Stations?

It wasn't so much Arsenal Stations, just that Flourishes and the Brandish lines got put in.
Calibur line's AoE charge is still good, though.

Who is BehindCurtai, and did you ever meet him?

Unfortnately I did meet him.
He was a wizard.
RIP

If you did, you'd notice Torry looking very... different. "Corrupted", you could say.

I'm not about to get banned for talking about it. But yeah.

Tell me of the giant green jelly

He was fairly large on spawn and split up into smaller cubes as you killed him.
That's about it.
He spawned with a couple of the explosive jellies at the time, which could set you on fire.

So tell me this, was the game better in the beta day with older monsters and items , the middle time of Basil runs and the arcade, or the present time of accessories, missions, and Krogmo?

Some things have been improved, but I fear the word 'streamlined' was thrown around the office too much.
Three Rings has to remember they're a Video Game developer and not an Aeronautics specialist.
You don't have to streamline anything.

I heard there was a (or maybe two) guy who was selling trinkets for a low amount of cr. Is it true?

He used to be in the old Guild Hall. Back before Krogmo Coins.
Sold the 5-star focus trinkets and stuff.
But they were only 3-star back then.

Have you ever dropped a stone tortoise from a tortodrone?

I think I did during the 2009 beta. But drop rates for equipment a much, much worse now.

Was there a neutral(white) personal colour selection in the past?

I think there was once, by accident, several patches ago.
But aside from that the only way to get white coloured knights was to glitch them naked.

Who is the guy with cat mask on the image behind the play now button?(Also, how could pink proto helm existed?)

I'm not entirely sure what you're talking about.

Completely invincible and really cool.
The Gold Trojan was in a gate puzzle where you had to get a Gold Key and he would hit the gate switches to bring the gate back up while you were trying to pick up the key.

Shoebox's picture
Shoebox
Were bombs usefull? Yeah.

Were bombs usefull?

Yeah. They were actually pretty good.
The one thing I liked is that you could use all three weapon types and none of them really felt overpowered in comparison to another.
Because there were no equipment bonuses or anything.
And you could drop bombs without the charging.
Guns just made it really made it easy to get through fights without getting hit because of their stupid range.

How did Tordy fight like?

He had a Shoryuken, a ground smash and fired a bunch of missiles in the air that marked dots on the ground before they landed, then stayed stuck in the ground and could stun and shock you. The downside is that Tortodrone could damage himself with the shards so you kill him without hitting him.

Great Thread...

Hey,

First of all great thread. Great questions and great responses.

My question (it might've been asked already and my awful memory forgot it) is: How sustainable was CE back in beta/very early release (i joined 2 months or so after release)? What I mean is could you sustain a steady CE count by simply diving through the clockworks, earning enough crowns, then buying 100 CE to go again.

Thanks for the awesome topic.

Here's a few questions

How did you entertain yourself before bosses? I get the feeling endless clockwork runs would have gotten old fast.

If there was one addition you would like to see in the game, what would it be?

Any particular features you miss?

How did you entertain

How sustainable was CE back in beta/very early release (i joined 2 months or so after release)?

Hardly anybody played, I think nick said there was only a few hundred people in the early parts of the beta.
So CE trading happened usually through stuff like rare equipment and materials rather than actual crowns.
I just remember all the buy offers being somewhere close to 2k and all the sell offers being 10k+ and nobody trading anything using the exchange until they made all of the changes to binding and crafting.

How did you entertain yourself before bosses? I get the feeling endless clockwork runs would have gotten old fast.

Not really. The levels themselves were all unique and they had a fair few secrets in them. Plus there was the rare spawns that dropped items you were always hunting for. It's kinda stupid they made both the rare monsters rare then put no items in them or make the item drops just stupidly rare to boot. Kinda ruins half the point of rare monster spawns when you only get a measly 50cr 99% of the time.
Aside from that, I think Vanaduke was in the 2010 beta from the start, just nobody could really beat him until later on. Or we couldn't make gates that reached the lower strata until later on in the beta but he was always there. I don't really remember.

If there was one addition you would like to see in the game, what would it be?

A lot of the things I wanted to see added to the game got put in already. I suppose, if anything, I'd like to just see them doing something that makes sense.

Any particular features you miss?

I miss the old Silver Keys. I thought they had a lot of potential in regards to creating alternate routes through levels.
But I guess we'll never see anything cool like that again.
I also miss the days when Divine Avengers and Gran Fausts didn't exist outside of recipes and then the days where they existed only as extremely rare drops.
They were kinda like the Darkfang Shield in that regard. Just you had to also find the recipes to upgrade them.

The only questions I really have to ask cannot be answered by you-

Why are we still drooling over content that was removed 2 years ago?

and more importantly-

Why isn't all or some of this in the game right now? As you can see above- we are still drooling over removed content from 2 years ago.

I remember the merchants I'd find in-between levels... and how hard it was to figure out what I wanted because the wiki was kinda empty... and when I could put in 1 crown and get 100 CE because someone really messed up... and when you could beat Vanaduke with ease in Proto Gear... and when every piece of gear had defense for all 4 elements... lol
