How to Win
- Enter the contest!
- Your entry can be a piece of art, a story, a poem, an animation, or a SpiralSpy piece, depending on the category you enter. There are several categories to choose from, several prizes in each category, and prizes just for participating.
- Be awesome to each other
- I'll be giving out citizenship awards to those who show exemplary support and encouragement to the entrants, or who are generally helpful within the thread (i.e. politely providing answers to questions I have already answered but the person may have missed, making good suggestions, etc.)
- Just show up!
- All non-spam posters will get an entry into a weekly raffle. There will be an additional raffle at the end of the contest for all posters.
- Attend the awards ceremony!
- There will be door prizes and possibly games during the event.
- Play games!
- Each week, there will be a different game happening in the thread.
Rules
Rule-breakers will get no more than a single warning before being disqualified, either from the contest or the weekly raffles, depending on whether or not you are an entrant. For large infractions, such as mass-spamming, flaming, or obvious TOS breakage, I will not warn you before making a report.
- All posts and entries, as usual, need to follow the Spiral Knights TOS
- No spamming. A bit of chatter is fine, but I like my topics to stay on topic.
- No criticism of the entries. If an entrant specifically asks for critique of their work, only constructive criticism is allowed.
- All rules here also apply to any threads linked from here. Misbehavior in my Stone Field Borough thread, or any threads containing entries will be treated as though it were misbehavior here.
- Do not enter anything that you yourself did not create; this will result in not only immediate disqualification, but you will be barred from any future contests I may hold.
- You may enter no more than three times, in different categories.

Tev's Great Big Contest's Final Mini-Contest
Winners of the weekly games each receive 100 CE. Some weeks, there may be additional prizes at 50 CE each, but I won't necessarily announce those weeks at the outset. I'll be using this tool for any random drawings.
Create a Spiral Knights-related riddle (think the sort of thing you'd get from a Sphinx or find in a Tolkien book) and send it to me with the answer either via in-game mail, tumblr, deviantart, or my email (tevokkia@gmail.com). Winning riddles (the number of which will depend on the number of entries) will be used at the Award Ceremony as a between-award game. You may submit as many riddles as you wish, and can win up to 3 times.
Previous Weeks' Winners
Week 13:
Game - Spot the Difference! Oatmonster wins! Here's the answer key
Mini-contest #1 - Caption Contest!: Sdkfzafk wins the 100 CE, with Psychodestroyer and Latisan-Sklay winning 50 CE each as runners-up.
Mini-contest #2 - Costume Contest!: Xairathan wins the 100 CE
Mini-contest #3 - Name Origin!: I had lots of good entries for this, so decided to give 50 CE each to six different entries. Pballs made me laugh, Myqpalzm had the worst pun, Vifig was brave, Remilia was ambitious, The-Knightwalker had a nice poem, and Engravement resounded with me a bit
Week 12:
Game - Anagrams!: Lordofnecromancers was the only one to enter this week, so he'll win 150 CE.
Mini Contest - Knock-knock jokes!: Xairathan totally made me lose it, so she wins 100 CE. 50 CE each to Grittle and Artistbma. XD
Week 11:
Game - Word Search!: Thunderbog found the most words this week, and gets the 100 CE. Five other people found at least 40 out of the 48 (plus one unintentional) words, and will each get 25 CE.
Answers: The answer key!
Mini-Contest - Caption Contest!: Raspberry wins the 100 ce.
Week 10:
Game - Scavenger Hunt: I had a few potential winning entries this week, so random drawing picked Remiliaoftheearth for the 100 CE. Xxpapaya, Oatmonster, and Vifig each get 25 CE for sending complete entries.
Mini Contest - Book Title Contest: I had so many great entries for this contest that I had a hard time judging, but narrowed it down to my favorite three and did a random draw. Kimahonite will recieve 100 ce, while Latisan-Sklay and Vifig each will receive 50 ce.
Week 9:
Game - Crossword Puzzle: Lordofnecromancers was the only one to submit with all correct answers and wins the 100 CE. Oatmonster and Latisan-Sklay each missed three, but will each get 50 CE for turning it in due to low participation.

Week 8:
Game - Anagram: LordofNecromancers sent in an impressively long list of anagrams, while Latisan-Sklay submitted 100 clever sentences and phrases. Each win 100 CE.
Game - Word Search from last week: The only person to send in answers for this during the extended period was LordofNecromancers, who added an extensive list of unrelated words to the SK works he had already found and earns an additional 50 CE.

Mini-Contest - Caption Contest!: This one was hard to judge, so I let Sol do it. XD Latisan-Sklay wins 100 CE, while Grittle wins 50 CE.
Week 7:
Game - While the Week 7 game has been extended, there are some winners already to be awarded to: Latisan-Sklay and Snubear each found more than 40 of the words (45 and 50, respectively), and will be getting 125 ce each. Incoherrant sent in a few actual SK words and a whole pile of unrelated words, so will be getting 50 ce. Lordofnecromancers also sent some in before the original deadline and will be receiving 25 ce. Answers to come at the end of this week.
Mini Contest - Caption Contest! Yttriu wins the 100 ce, while Lord-Hood wins 50 ce and Vifig wins 25 ce.

Game - Harder Jumble Than Last Time! (For reals). Three people, Incoherrant, Fallenhope, and Dromedor, completed it before Wednesday, winning 250 CE each. No one else submitted even partial answers.
Answers:
kamarin, justifier hat, grey owlite shield, Ash of Agni, swordstone, heavy crystal bomb, scarlet shield, rose regalia, Monster Bone, parrying blade, slash module, angelic raiment, blackened crest, Rock Jelly Mail, roarmulus twins, ecto drop, treasure box. Secret word: Mighty Cobalt Armor
Mini Contest - Micro Fiction on any Spiral Knights topic. Yttriu wins 100 CE because I will never stop giggling at "DJ Snarby played a funky beat." Nechrome and Vifig each get 50 CE.
Week 5:
Game - Crossword Puzzle!: Eleven people completed the puzzle this week; by random drawing, Incoherrant wins 100 CE, The-Knightwalker wins 50 CE, and everyone else who completed it wins 25 CE.

Acknowledgements
I'd like to thank Sol-Ether for putting up with me while I prepared for this contest, helping me out with crafting, not blinking an eye when I bought a little extra CE so I could hoard some of the promos, giving me piles of ragecrafted equipment, tossing his extra promo items my way, and encouraging me when the huge parade of commissions I was doing to raise money for this had me tearing my hair out. Without him, this contest would have either taken much more than the six months I spent saving for it, or have never been able to happen.
I'd also like to thank my wonderful donators for lending a helping hand. Za-Ck, Isisdelltion, Flyingninza, and Remiliaoftheearth; you guys are great friends and I love you all. Extra hugs to Isis, who played endless rounds of Blast Network just to make me happy. Also thanks to Zivo, who essentially said "Oh, you're mass-crafting heart pendants as contest prizes? Here, let me throw some enamorocks at you," even though he had just met me two minutes before in Haven.
Additional thanks to Axonio and Obsidious, who didn't realize they were being guinea pigs when I showed them my category list and were quite helpful in pointing out flaws, as well as to Mael for suggesting the video category and Remiliaoftheearth for suggesting the craft category. Also to Axonio for keeping me company during the Livestreams I ran to make sure that I finished those commissions, even at stupid hours and on days that no one else came.
Frequently Asked Questions
Or, at the very least, questions people have asked that I feel it's important that everyone see answered.
Can someone help me with my entry?
As long as that help is in the form of editing your story, making suggestions, or helping you with your technique, yes. More intense help, like writing a section of your story or doing the lines so you can color the picture, would count as a collaboration.
What are the rules for collaborations?
Collaborations can include no more than three people. The person who actually posts the entry will be considered the lead collaborator, so choose who you work with carefully; if that person manages to disqualify themselves with bad behavior, the whole entry is disqualified. This is also the person I'll send the chosen prize to if the collaboration wins, so it will be up to them to split the prizes however your group decided to split them. I'm not responsible for prizes being split incorrectly or kept by the lead collaborator once they have been disbursed.
What qualifies as 'some retouching' in the SpiralSpy category?
Little things like blurring the background to add depth of field, adding lens flare, anti-aliasing, or adding speech bubbles count. All backgrounds and characters should be created in SS, except for this retouching or any edits you have made to the textures. If I'm really iffy on whether you've retouched or retextured something, I may ask to see your edited texture file.
Does my entry need to be something new for this contest?
Yes!! If you've posted something up previously, you can't use it for this contest. I won't even be looking at things posted to the internet (anywhere - Deviantart, Tumblr, whatever) before the Sept. 1 start date, so if you finish your entry between now and then, make sure to wait until September to upload it. I'm going to be very strict about this, except in cases where you had it uploaded somewhere private, like a password-protected Google Docs link or a private Photobucket folder that would require you give someone a link for them to see it. I'll still be very disappointed if I find that someone has entered recycled work from earlier they just hadn't gotten around to sharing yet, though ... I've put a lot of work into this contest and I'd like to see some original work from you guys.
Can we write a new "bonus chapter" of a fanfic we've already written, using the same characters and setting?
Yes, as long as that bonus chapter stands alone as a full story by itself and doesn't require me or anyone else to read your other fiction for it to make sense.
If more than one winner want the same prize, how will you decide who gets it?
This is a complicated one, and the reason I asked everyone to choose their top three prizes; I have a lot of different things and want to make sure each winner gets something they actually want. If more than one person want the same thing and are entitled to a prize on that level, I'll first make an effort to liquidate a prize no one wants to get the one that both winners are asking for instead. If I'm unable to do that, I'll take a look at their second picks (and third, if necessary). If someones second choice is worth more, they're likely to get it instead of their first so they'll have a more valuable prize to make up for not getting their first choice; if I've spoken to one of the winners and they've mentioned to me that they want their second choice almost as much as their first or that they want all of their choices about the same amount and that they're in no particular order, that person will get their second choice because I know they will be happier with it than the other person would have been with theirs. Beyond that, it may end up being a lot of juggling and judgement calls on my part.
Can we use an existing drawing by someone else to base our SpiralSpy/craft/whatever entry on?
If you do base your entry on someone else's work, it could fall into two categories: 1) the entry would have to be based on work created for that purpose and then listed as a collaboration. Otherwise, it can get a little sticky with who has permission or gave credit or deserves part of the prize if the entry should win, and I'd like to avoid that by having both parties agree on that sort of thing without my involvement. Also, the contest is all about new content; directly modeling someone's armor design from last year isn't very new. Or 2) it could be a re-imagining of/homage to an existing piece that is different enough from the original to be obviously inspired by, rather than a copy of, the original. Also, you would have to get permission/give credit in regard to the original piece (although no permission needed for any of my pieces, since it's my contest.) An example of this might be to create a picture posed like my Spiral Flower piece, using gremlins or zombies or something instead of knights.
Can we edit our submissions once we've posted our entry?
Yes; I won't be giving the entries more than a cursory glance to make sure it's something new and not plagiarized before judging, so you may edit your submissions at any time until the due date by editing your original entry post.

Are we allowed to enter now/more than once?

The answers to those questions are already posted, but: No, any entries posted anywhere on the internet before the start date of Sept 1 will not be judged, and Yes, up to three times in different categories.

The link to Tales from Stone Field Borough isn't working ):
But you should make a pdf/ebook version so I can enjoy from my phone or Nook xD

I plan on starting my novel now so I get a head start. Microsoft Word, AHOY!

^.^ This seems pretty cool. I'll be sure to enter. :3
Already have a poem ready, got to start planning for my short story.

Okay, fixed the link; thanks for letting me know!
I had always meant to make pdf version ... after I finished the illustrations. Which I've been slow to even start. XD I'll make a quick PDF though.

One question, do we need to make something new for this contest, or can it be something we've published previously?

Definitely new. I'm not even looking at things that have been posted to the internet (anywhere, not just here) before the start date.
(So if you make something new, make sure not to post it up anywhere before Sept 1!)

It has to be new? Dang it. :/
There goes my poem. :P
Good thing I'm good at poetry. Should be able to create a new one soon.

I'm already working on my novel. Which is why I probably won't get another chapter out in my fanfic anytime soon.

If you've already written it but have yet to share it with anyone, you can still use it. If you've already shared it, though, yes, you'd have to write something else.
Keep in mind that you've got until the end of November, everyone. That gives you a full month of prep, plus a full three months of actual contest time.

Could we set a "bonus" chapter for a fanfiction if we have one? of course, a completely new never before seen one, but it uses the same people and setting as from a fanfiction? If you've said it somewhere, sorry Dx

I've got a collection of short stories, and you can use the settings and characters for those stories. Keep in mind that that's the category I'm going to be the hardest on judging (i.e. nobody may actually win, even if there are several entries), but non-winning entries in that category will also be judged in the fiction category of the appropriate length and will have a chance to win there.

Sure, as long as I don't have to read the other fiction (if I haven't already) for it to make sense. The story can use the same characters and settings, but needs to stand on it's own as a complete story.

There is a spiral spy characters section? I'll definitely be entering.
Or scenes... Depends how much time I have.

It seems my tablet double posts when I use the back button.

Is the Exemplary Award available for all art sections? Even if there is only one entry ?
"Single Award: [...] Winners will show both good ideas and some technical skill."
Is it the same kind of award than exemplary one? Why only "SpiralSpy" and Novella will be judged?
Thx for your contest, you must have spent a lot of time on it.

Oh, look, another contest. I wonder if I sh-

I suppose I could make a short story or something. In the mean time I can write all I want for this, not that I planned to stop. I suspect most participants are in it for the fancy prizes and what not, but I would rather see what people can make; different styles, artistic influences, et cetera, to see what the community is capable of. Give it your best shot. If that fails, shoot it when it turns around so no one sees you.

The Exemplary Award is currently only being used in the Stone Field Borough fiction category. As I said in the description of that judging type, several, all, or NONE may win. If there are stories entered but I don't feel that any of them are actually written close enough to my characters' personalities that I can consider them canon, that prize will not be awarded. Any entries in that category that don't win the Exemplary Award will be judged with the other stories (i.e. short stories or novellas) in the placement category for another try at a prize. That way, a story that's really funny and engaging and well-written but which doesn't quite get some character personalities right (I'm a stickler for that) or throws off my timeline may still win first place in the short story category.
The Single Award is essentially like the Standard Placement Award, but in categories I expect fewer entries in. So instead of first, second, and third place, there's just first. If I get more entries than expected, the categories will probably graduate to Placement and more awards will be added. If some of the categories listed as Placement get fewer entries than expected, they may be downgraded to Single.
Sorry if it gets a bit confusing; I tried to explain it as simply as possible, but since I already know what I mean, it's occasionally hard to gauge.
... and I have spent quite a bit of time on this already, so I really hope people end up having fun with it.

>.<
I wanted to see what people can make too; much of the fiction (although I'm rather behind in my reading) and nearly all of the art I've already seen, so I don't want to end up judging things that I had already decided how much I liked before the contest even started.
Don't worry; if you want to enter a short story, you have until the end of November to finish it. If you want it to be a spinoff of your current story, you can do that, too (it may save you time creating new characters and situations), as long as I don't have to go back and read your whole pre-contest story for your entry to make any sense.

Unless you have other judges to help you, short stories would be preferable. I can imagine one person reading through stories which are literally long enough to be books smashing their face on their desk, likely due to the content damaging your senses. That gives me deliciously evil ideas for what to write. Pip pip.
I appreciate the loop but I would rather make something fresh than try to make an independent part of my story. By the amount of pages compared to the amount of content I have already thought out it should be around almost a couple hundred pages long when completed. If I made a little derp separately it would counter the intent behind the story as a single process. A lot of writers have their original characters, often their own knight, which can be applied to various plots and still be relevant. In my own story, which I will link again here so people are not confused, the characters are literally part of the story; if I threw them somewhere else nothing would make sense. If I made only a part of it as a submission for this contest you would have to read the rest to understand what is happening.
Try not to worry about it. You can worry about what I will make for the contest, but I can handle making a short story instead of using what I already have. Be sure to have a bucket handy.

Whatever you throw at me is unlikely to be so much worse than my own story, Consumption, that I am thoroughly disturbed by it.
And I'm not saying that anyone necessarily SHOULD write a spin-off, just that the option is there, since someone else had asked.

Made a few clarifications (one to the rules and one to the "can't have been posted anywhere on the internet before the contest start" stipulation) as per some feedback I received. Feel free to throw any further questions or suggestions my way.

Well, this seems like good sport and a fun way of holding a Contest, and an interesting one at that!
I'll be sure to verse myself in the rules, and will stick around when this shebang kicks off!

I just realized the short story that I've been working on for several days has already been posted on the forums once. ._.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO.
So now I need a new poem and story. ._.

Tev, I am greatly indebted to you for giving me the perfect opportunity to make my return.
Pip pip cherrio, off to the races. Apples an' pears. God save the Queen.
/tips my hat
Brit Britishman, AWAY!!!?!

Plad.... Well, I just lost the SpiralSpy category.
Meh, I'll still try :3

There are plenty of prizes to go around ... every entrant is guaranteed at least a little something. ^.^

Actually I won't be putting that much effort into the Spiralspy category, but I still will enter. Right now I'm focusing my efforts on a story. Will probly be a long piece of short fiction or a Novella. I SHALL DESTROY YOUR OCULAR ORGANS WITH THOUSANDS OF WORDS EUGHERRGUEHURHEUER
Brit Britishman, AWAY!!!?!
(finally fixed my compooter)

You don't mind if I suggest a new category do you?
I was thinking of what character-theme to make for the SpiralSpy section, and one idea was a movie character. So, would a movie/other videogame character SpiralSpy section work?

That would just fall under the "models" section. If you want to make your entry a retexture as a pre-existing character, that's perfectly fine. Thank you for the suggestion, though!
Damn.
Sorry Tev, I may/may not be able to enter this. I'd love to enter if I could, but exams are coming up, and I don't even have access to my 'story writing tools', if you know what I mean.
The maybe is because of the long period you gave for entries, so I might be able to rustle up a story in the given time, assuming I ever get returned my 'tools'.
Ah well, that aside, Psychodestroyer here, showing interest. :)

Well, hopefully you'll be able to, even if it's something short. ^.^ Thanks for the interest, hon.

Question: Can I create it as a private google doc and just set it to public when the contest goes live?
Also, what days do you livestream again? 'Cause this new school has lotsa holladays and I think I should catch up.
And...has anyone seen Awesomesock? Haven't seen em post in a long time.

Answer: Yes, as long as it's set to private until the contest goes live.
I Livestream Sun-Thurs, usually starting about 9pm GMT -5. If I'm cancelling a day, Sun or Thurs are the first to go, and I may be cutting back to only streaming Mon and Wed after I finish the last of these commissions.
Also, I've seen Awesomesock on DeviantArt, where he's been fairly active, but he hasn't been posting here, really, and it's been about two weeks since he signed in to SK.

I'm sorry, Tevokkia, but I won't be contributing my mini-game on Tumblr to this contest, I had some thoughts that people might have a hard time looking for these songs. :x
Thus, I don't wanna disturb ye actually, even that I can't really join the contest. So, good luck for the contests! ^q^

Aww, thanks hon. Even if you can't really enter, you can still pop in and play the weekly games if you want. ^.^

Well, my first entry is pretty much done. Unfortunately with school starting on september 4th, I may be too busy for the other two.
Full speed ahead I guess.
Categories
Each category is followed by which judging types they qualify for in parentheses. Descriptions of judging types are below.
Artwork
Other Visual Arts
Spiral Knights Fan-Fiction
All fiction entries MUST show proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Some mistakes are understandable, but do use the spelling/grammar check on your word processing software if you need to. (Also, I hate walls of text. Remember to put spaces between your paragraphs so you don't hurt my eyes!)
NEW: If you will be submitting an ongoing story where people have the opportunity to post in your thread between your story posts, please either put links to each post that contains part of your story in the first post, or add a link to each story post that goes to the next section of your story if there is any conversation between them. Reading and therefore judging will go a lot faster if I don't have to wade through bits of thread that are not a part of your entry. Thank you!
