OPPA Gangnam Spam!!...
Gangnam Spam!!...
saw this post again, read the suggestion again and remembered what it was about, i think it is a great idea and i hope it works out for you guys.
I'm skeptical of this idea for a variety of reasons, but mostly because it seems to be heavily biased towards a subjective method of judging who would get the award. Maybe I'm reading the letter (and by proxy, the overall theme of the thread) wrong, but aren't "community awards" usually given out in some fashion by the community? Moreover, the way it's implemented on paper seems to be a lot of minute desk work that I'd like to think that some of the devs might not want to sift through - let alone be able to sift through if they're designing new ideas for the game. Which leaves us with a variety of options regarding how the award would be distributed, what kinds of mediums are distributed, etc.
On top of that, with a community as large as Spiral Knights, even if the forums are just a small fraction of the overall game community, only having a trophy item for a week seems trivial at best. I don't see why there can't be multiple categories for different types of art (abstract, realistic, minimalist, just to name a few, but leave that one up to whoever hands out the awards) and extend the time the award is "given" so to speak, or even better, remove the expiration altogether.
If I remember to come back and read this post later and add on more ideas, I will. I'm running on 30 hours of no sleep, got bored, wandered here and yeah. In the meantime, I'd prefer if my name wasn't added to the list just out of respect for the fact that I'm not sure what to think of it at the moment.
Pretty much agree with Ret. With one minor addition.
I notice it is "Dog-Rock" and not "Dogrock". Dogrock being the guy that has been around since beta and has a Purple Spiral. I could be wrong, but it looks exceedingly bad like that. It looks like you needed a big name, but couldn't get any so you took one of the biggest and made a character that sounds close enough to not be noticed by a lot of people.
I could be wrong, I won't deny it, but that is what it looks like... and it undermines your entire petition as it makes it look like you have to resort to underhanded means to get support.

~Reworded so it didn't sound so caustic.~
@Retequizzle - I very much understand your inquiries/doubts and I don't necessarily disagree with you.
Yes, the award would probably be subjective to the people distributing the awards.
Why not have the community do it? Mainly because if it were directly in the hands of the community with no check, you can see how things would get out of hand very quickly (everyone nominating everybody).
So then why just have a few people do it? Keep in mind that we aren't suggesting giving the rights to this to just some random people. For the most part, everything would stay in the hands of Spiral Knights anyway. Linking names to artwork is not hard, so awards for Fan Art Friday aren't a problem (especially if they delegate someone responsible to do it). I don't want to go too far with this (or risk sounding like a puffed up punk) but I think that there's some mutual trust between Spiral Knights and the AiD blog, Arsenal podcast, and even the Spiral Knights forums to some extent. It's not like a hundred people would be getting the award every week. Rare promotions, Fan art Friday, and just a couple of other applications would be the only major times this is used.
If you're thinking that we're suggesting that Spiral Knights screen the "nominees" the award, I'd have to say that we weren't thinking that way, but it still doesn't seem that hard. SK is in control of Fan Art Friday anyways, and promotions, contests, and player of the week from the podcast only come around once in a while (or week).
I see the concern about the time thing - it's been brought to us so many times that I figured it might be better to let it run for the default 30 days. The thing we have against expiration dates are that at a certain point, when someone like Fazzie or MKT or El-Sato gets art featured 8 times, then they have 8 of the same costume, which makes no sense to us. An award that goes away but can always be gotten back seems like good incentive to keep up the good work (outside of simply being loyal to the community and finding joy in it, of course). Here, I summarized my thoughts here: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/67861#comment-559788
Having multiple categories is fine - never thought about it before, but it makes sense. We've discussed breaking it up into different types of costumes like the Bombhead masks, with different styles for "Fan Art Friday Artist", "Lockdown Tournament Champion", "Arsenal Podcast Player of the Week", etc. so if multiple types of art were to be implemented as well, the expiration date on the items might as well be removed. Still though... what would you do with 3 costumes for "Abstract Fan Art Friday"?
Thanks for your input sir. This is what ideas need - refinement to show whether they stand up or burn up.
@Gwenyvier - Hopefully I can clear this one up in much shorter order.
"Dog-Rock" is a typo. Dogrock actually said in the live stream chat of our podcast when we first brought it up that he supported this idea. I only wish now that I had a screenshot of it.
Now we come to the point of confusion. Why did I put "Dog-Rock"? Not as familiar with the community at the time (three months ago), I assumed that "Dog-Rock" was how his name went. He signed into our live stream chat I believe as "Dogr0ck" or something with leet spelling as such. I did not learn that he had been awarded a Spiral Order until I went searching for all the owners of the PSA when our podcast/forum moderator Tevokkia was awarded hers.
Could this "Dogr0ck" have been an impersonator? Possibly. There's an easy way to check. Let's ask Dogrock if he ever attended a live stream of our podcast.
I have in the meantime removed the name "Dog-Rock" from the listing. Under Vog and whatever other deities you believe it, I promise that this was not a ploy for attention. This was not an identity theft/plagiarism. This was an accident. Proof? I have nothing conclusive, but why would we need "underhanded means" to get "support" from "needing a big name"? We had almost everyone in our podcast stream (including this "Dogr0ck") show support for the idea. Moreover, the first person to sign the petition was Ailment (the signatures are placed chronologically - check for yourself) from AiD, and he signed it resoundingly.
Anyways, I hope that clears something up. Perhaps your view of Latisan has already been tainted? ...honestly not much I can say. I will speak to Dogrock however and see what he says (or perhaps you'll beat me to it).
I did not think it was intentional actually, just saying how it looked. Which was why I had reworded my post. I hope Dogrock gets back to you soon. :)

This idea is a fantastic one and you're more than welcome to add my name to the list of supporters! +1
I've been waiting for this kind of stuff to happen forever. Finally, a community-based game besides tf2 begins to offer chances at developing to others.

OOO already benefits their supporters in other ways lol.... and besides, its not like many of you guys (or me) would be getting such an award. That kind of thing is reserved only for a very limited number of players. Look at the vast number of Purple Spirals out there.
I'm sorry sir, but I don't understand. What benefits does OOO already have?
Moreover, how many PSAs do you think there are out there? Because I'm pretty sure there's 3.
Yup, there has been a few times where I’ve been on the live chat while the podcast, though it’s uncommon I sign in or even say anything since I’m usually busy at the time. I normally appear as “Dogrock” or “d0gr0ck” outside of the SK world, though the name isn’t as unique as I’d like it to be. Which version is used usually depends on whether or not someone else has beaten me to the name.
A few hours after the podcast and post that spawned this thread I slung an email in Latisan’s direction explaining the existence of the Purple Spiral. From listening to the podcast I wasn’t sure if anyone chatting earlier knew that a community service award existed. I definitely also said to him that I liked his idea, but I don’t explicitly recall ever agreeing to sign any petitions. Latisan has demonstrated he wasn’t trying to use the name in bad faith, so I don’t think there really needs to be anything more to do at this point.

Ronimo did this with their game Awesomenauts. And it works! They have popular E-stars and podcasters do the voices for their game, and in turn gain recognition/followers from them.
The role can also be reversed by having in game items only obtainable if you check out their websites.
Sign me up! This is something that will help the community a lot. I originally used this website but now I'm linked to steam like many others. If this works, many steam players will come to the website.
I fully support this. I feel like this will make the SK community blow up even more. Which I most definitely want.
SIGN IT BOYS, YOU AIN'T GETTING HEAVEN!

OOGAOOGAOOGAOOGA!!!!!
Seems very fitting! I'm sure this would get things stirring at least to some degree. I salute this idea!
You have my support, good fellow.
i like the idea, i would also like if the costumes also comes with its own aura and what knot shiny stuff to make the player stand out even more. :)
Also, there should be a system announcements to all corners of spiral knights in all languages to spread that players name throught the SK world.
Although I am disgusted with your opinion that the color "Green" isn't a creative color Lat. But this Idea looks neat so....1+
You have my support.
