I propose that someday, SEGA, OOO, and Pixar get together to make a family-friendly TV show based on Spiral Knights. The series would focus on things like adventure, friendship, and discovering the meaning of life, all the while delivering some pretty intense combat. The plot of the pilot episode explores the adventures of the knights as they leave Isora to discover the "fabulous sentient energies" found somewhere in the universe. Along the way, they encounter the Morai, their arch-enemies and counterparts, and do battle with them. In the last episode of this series, they encounter a planet emanating the "sentient energies" they mentioned in the pilot episode, and after partially scanning it, the ship suddenly loses power and plunges to the surface, causing havoc on board and forcing the knights to hit the escape pods. The audience is left wondering whether the friends on board will ever find each other (alive) again.

Since Spiral Knights is a combat game, combat style will be important to the series. Swordsmen both attack and parry attacks with their swords, while sometimes doing "cool moves" like rolling under enemies, somersaulting over them, or otherwise doing sword-related stunts. They're kinda like the "Jedi Knights" of the series. Gunners will either be going all hero, charging in with guns blazing and artfully dodging bullets, or they will be taking cover and having cover-related tension (like in the crime shows). They're kinda like the "Master Chiefs" or "Commander Shepards" of the series. Bombers get some serious love: they get to throw their bombs, slip 'n slide under and around their enemies, flip over them, and do cool Zelda leaps to plant bombs on larger enemies (yeah, I'm lookin' at you, Royal Jelly). They get to be the rockin' grenade heroes of the series. Seriously, in my imagination, I already love watching them work.

The series will focus on four main characters:

Lieutenant Feron is a wise, kindly character, and sounds simultaneously old and deep-throated. He ranks second only to Ozlo. He is often seen giving sage advice to various characters at various times throughout the series.

Lieutenant Vaelyn feels like a tomboy to some people. She is a military officer through and through, professional to the core, and totally committed to her work. At first, she doesn't really care about the knights under her command, but as the series progresses, she develops a heart (so to speak), and gains a level of thoughtfulness. She eventually becomes so thoughtful that she begins to drift off during her less-exciting missions. She often butts heads with Feron, who is much more caring but is also more willing to bend the rules for the benefit of the knights. I'm imagining her to be voiced by Jennifer Lopez.

Lieutenant Desna is something of a contradiction within the knights. She is gruff, deep-throated (i.e. not pretty-sounding), and carries a tough-girl act, but is unusually compassionate towards her knights. I imagine her to be voiced by an old, black woman with a thick drawl.

Lieutenant Barrus is a cheery, joking sorta fella with a big heart. He's also sort of a smooth-talker, and has been trying to warm up to Vaelyn (but with little effect until much later). As the swashbuckling hero that he is, he likes to be fashionably late to a battle before wiping it clean with his sword.

The series will mostly center on these four characters until they hit Cradle. If you guys like the idea, I may talk about the next two series I had in mind.

Spiral Knights would be a perfect TV show, for both children unfamiliar with the game, players of the game and people who enjoy god things in general, SK has such a cute and friendly feel yet a serious story with surprising depth, if a show ever came out i want be watching it in a heartbeat, man, the dev has got to see this :D.

Wakfu had a series based on its prequel game Dofus which aired while the sequel game, Wakfu, was in development. The Wakfu show and game have very similar content down to areas, NPCs, and plenty of gameplay content playing important roles throughout episodes. The series is currently not available in English but there is a version in French with English subtitles, though an English dub is apparently in progress.

Why does this matter? They had a team of competent story writers, animators, and the funding to do it. Spiral Knights does not. The storyline used in the show for Wakfu is its own storyline separate of the game storyline, which is less of a storyline and more a world with a rich history and nourished future while its inhabitants grow and interact. Spiral Knights has a very simple and straightforward storyline and would require significant padding to last very long before everyone gets tired of the monotony. Wakfu has an entire world with many diverse races, enviroments, and wildlife with a variety of interaction with the people. In Spiral Knights we kill stuff and steal money off their corpses. Nothing against making a series for this game, the very idea inspired me a while ago to start writing a little something, but it would need a lot of input and funding to attempt.

We have a good amount of story writers in The spiral knights community,
So story is covered. But animation and voice acting is something we don't have,
so I think that a book or a comic would be better if you were to make some sort of story based off SK.

On side note, most fan-fictions are based off the game itself,
or sometimes a story that uses the game as a background.
So a change of plot may be necessary.

even Dofus/Wakfu have "kill stuff and steal money off their corpses.", besides wakfu have the "Environment Control", where you need to keep the population of the species in cities within a level to generate bonuses for the nation, limiting the hunt, dofus doesn't have it, is just kill to earn some money
stealing some horns/wool/saliva/hull/tongue/eye/tail/stomach/leather from the sheeps (gobbals) and nails/skins of the Bworker [weird is: i wield a sword on my hand and i only can got 1-2 nails instead of 20... if i can't take the nails naturally, why not just carry all the hand/feets and have someone pull the 20 nails for me?] does not diminish the possible opportunity to make this game an animation, which became

after all, if the game did not have that, how would the MMO part of it, if he at first tends to a game Hack-and-Slash? and this way is better, because give to the histoy a lot of more action
example: how the squads can try fleeing the Snarbolaxes (don't have bells on firsts moments or the bells are placed by almires/gremlins?) or trying understand the division of work between devilites while they throw chairs upon the knights because they distract them or the boss thinks they are problematic and sends workers to strike
I admit it's a little evil, by the knights, cut whatever is in the way, much that the Vogs became extinct, but that work at same way than the game Dofus, and the story can be told from the point of view of Alpha squad, or least, from the firsts squads who survived the journey of reconnaissance to the entrance of the core, questioning during the journey about: "why this world looks like a maze?", after having returned with one of the "Recon Modules" and try to return to the same place, the environment becomes another, as was the 1st meeting of the knights with the gremlins, a little more history about the snipes, as the lifts were made, as they discovered that the planet supplying power to the knights naturally? Why the Knights make the Vogs extinct? too dangerous to the skylark members?...
a lot of questions that can be answered by the animation, which the game does leave a superficial response about of facts

I'm an animation student

As an animation student, I'd love for there to be an animated series on this game. However I don't feel this is something that should happen until Spiral Knights is a bit bigger, and OOO can get funding. Probably the best bet would be to have a short series that's maybe 30 episodes or so.

In both Dofus and Wakfu combat is not the only systematic part of the game. You can do professions. The closest we have to professions is crafting equipment which consumes a precious resource whereas in both Dofus and Wakfu all you need to do professions is a high enough profession level for the item you are trying to make, along with whatever materials it requires which often drops as loot from enemies or materials crafted by using materials obtained from loot, gathering in nature, or obtained through other professions. If you are in one of the four nations in one of the nature areas, which range from forests to swamps to beaches to ashen wastelands depending on the nation and where you are in that nation, the "clan member" NPC likes a range of plants and animals in the area but only has up two three demands and allows the populations to be within a broad range so long as they are within a certain range or the "clan member bonus" they give to all members of their nation diminish; the bonus being a large bonus for low level players in need of help while negligible to high level players but helpful no matter how small the bonus is. Bworkers do not exist in Wakfu. Gathering tongues, eyes, tails, and stomachs from sheep does not exit in Wakfu. The only "city" areas in Wakfu are marketplaces and make up a very small area in each of the nations, where >70% of the world has grasslands. Enemies in Wakfu never drop money. In fact, there are no NPCs to buy/sell at.

After that first paragraph the rest of your post makes me question how many joints you stuck up your nose and lit with a water balloon. Do you even English?

Test for popularity with current assets

Maybe they should just start with machinima. We know they're capable of doing cutscenes with their animation abilities; if they made a short episode using that, they could test for popularity. If it's really good, they could have it aired on Cartoon Network or something.

Heck, we could even try doing an animated short using SpiralSpy! If I had time, I would take the trouble to figure it out.

Gunners

This bothers me about Spiral Knights' grammar the most. I hate it when people say gunner or swordie instead of gunslinger and swordsman. At least, you said swordsman but there's no gunner on Spiral Knights. Wanna know what gunner really means?

Check.

Simply adding ER to something doesn't mean that it becomes a word that describes a person to specialize in whatever is behind the ER. Calling them gunners doesn't mean they use guns. That's like calling a chef a cooker when they are just called chefs or cooks.

Now, people criticize grammar a lot. I'm not so big on criticizing spelling, capitalization, and punctuation but I seriously have a problem with peoples' use of words.

Now, back on topic. Let me just say that I don't like the idea of multiplayer massively online games turning into television series and I especially don't like it if it's one of my favourite games so I don't agree with this idea.

A television series doesn't sound okay to me but an animated series on YouTube would not sound bad.

"Swordsman"
"Gunslinger"

And thank you, Softhead. Now all we need is scriptwriters...

Gunner = person who operates guns

SK gunner/gunslinger: person who shoots guns

I guess the only ground you have to stand on with that argument is that "gunners" usually operate bigger guns, while "gunslingers" would use handguns. Still, I don't feel like it makes enough difference to warrant complaining about it. As for swordie, it's just informal/shortened term for swordsman, or even "sword junkie". That would make sense, right? What's wrong with a game creating terms? It's not the first time that has happened.

So, about dat topic

Like Mrgrey said, this would only be possible in the far distant future when SK and OOO are maybe three times as big and/or popular. And then, there's the problem of having a kids show to promote a game that's "rated 13+"...

Gunner doesn't mean a person who operates guns exactly. Gunner can relate to guns however it relates to more military-like things.

Gunner isn't a created term and swordie isn't either. Swordie means swordfish or marlin and gunner has multiple definitions related to the military, sports, and there are some other definitions. That's why people saying gunner and swordie bothers me, they already have their own definitions so that would be like you calling a bomber a scientist, chef, or even calling it an animal like a mongoose.

Gunners may operate bigger guns however it relates to the military, there's no military on Spiral Knights so there can't be gunners. Don't even say Spiral Order will count as military.

Tons of people on the forums criticize one another's grammar but people don't have a problem with that. They may criticize things like spelling, punctuation, or capitalization but I criticize word choice which belongs with grammar.

See my point?

Like I said, it's like calling a chef a cooker when a cooker is actually an item used for cooking, not a person and even worse since the words used to "shorten" gunslinger and swordsman when they have their own definition. It's like calling a Bomber a football player.

Calling yourself a swordie is saying you're a swordfish.

i did "Operation Frankenstein" on 2nd paragraph to the end, combining several individual sentences... sorry
I mixed the use of translator with my own abilities to translate into English, but that part, I used the translator so much
the problem is not about the "English", is about the agreement between sentences, something than i forgot to review... even on my native language (portuguese) or any other, things like that can create a lot of jokes -_-'
about it, stay cool, I'll try not to make the same mistake again so soon

=> going back to the point:

when I talked about taking the resources, examples of resources, I was more referring to me Dofus, which played a lot and I am aware of some strange things which should not appear in animations, like a lot of people hunting the creatures on [Astrub] florest at same time, killing and gathering anything on your sight... movies/animations work with a smaller contingent, making it seem like the world is great to be explored
basically, any game can become animation, whether a short one, talking about small things, such as "Meet the [class]" from the Team Fortress 2 or even a TV series like Wakfu (the animation talk about life and journey of Yugo and his group), unless the game doesn't have any history, like "Pong" or "Tic Tac Toe"
what's need to made the animation: imagine just need to know how to use the peculiarities of the game to create a script [the creators of fanfics do it easily], some funds to invest and and good expectations of people about a possible animation history (because, after all, there are things that the game will be adapted in the history, which depending on the case, may give up something that is important, as the energy system and variations of weapons)

.

but talking about do not exists Bworks on Wakfu... Cracklers also not existed until recently, isn't? if you were watching the progress of the game, even before the alpha version of Wakfu, were already dismissing the class Enutrof, but brought back... perhaps because of pressure from the fans of the class
wait some time and you will see appear in an update, after all, they were not extinct, just forgotten

I dunno

A TV show would be nice but this would cost Spiral knights + OOO lots of funding to a company.

Pixar

This would still cost alot of funding to partner up AND fund the animation.

Now, sorry for skipping lines, but here is a mini wall of text which may look like I'm an idiot. Spiral knights + OOO will not combine with Disney. Star Wars was brought by Disney, but now it's probably ruined. I just heard that from a few bunch of people. If Disney buys Spiral knights, OOO and Sega will lose a game and Spiral knights would have the following things by Disney:

  • Knights will no longer have these kinds of gear or weapons. Instead, gear will be all plushies and weapons would become a balloon sword. It seems really dumb to have that.
  • Crystal Energy will just become regular crystal and crowns will become Club Penguin coins.
  • Every violent will be removed. Not only that, all noobie ideas like houses, opening the core, etc.. will be added to the game. This would become a 6+ game invaded with 6 year old maniacs complaining. Bosses would become friends, and once you meet them, you can make alot of tokens. The strongest knight would be Darth Vader, who would be replacing Vanaduke. Very

I do not want those ideas added to the game if Disney decides to buy Spiral knights.

Well, this is the only way I can defend myself. Spiral Order may be a military but none of the gunner definitions fit any gunslingers of Spiral Order.

How come Daxen isn't called a gunner?

It says he specializes in gunslinging. It doesn't say gunning.

Season 2 is called Spiral Knights: Journey to the Core. It focuses on Alpha Squad and their journey through the Clockworks. The deeper they go, the more they are forced to rely on each other and the precious few friends they find down there. The overall theme of this series is adventure and discovery.

I'm tempted to write some fanfiction, but I'm a terrible writer.

Ok, guys, here's the deal. PLEASE READ!

I am capable of producing an animation of the sort that you are talking about. Unforunately, it would have to be in 2D instead of 3D, but I believe We can make it work. I have made an animated episode for a BIONICLE series about a year ago, and it turned out well. Since then, i have been able to greatly improve my style by working on other comedic shorts and cartoon animations. I believe a Spiral Knights fan-made film could be just as interesting, and far more likely than getting OOO to do it. As long as we don't make any money off of it, it's legal. Most likely, if it was a fanmade film, only those already involved in the SK community would know about it. Since it will probably have to be fanmade in order to get anything done,

THE CONTENT
I am a moral sort of person, but I am very much against making the show cheesy, or childish, because I just don't watch that sort of thing. If i we were to make a show, I would want it to be interesting/climatic enough to capture the attention of older audiences, but not so violent that it would turn away the younger ones. Everything Thinslayer has mentioned sounds very intriguing so far, except perhaps the characters (unless they are canon). I believe it would be fun to see the chars that you find around haven for the main characters, or something to that extent.

THE STYLE
My personal animation style is a cross between anime and cartoon. If we were going to produce something this difficult, it will take several months to complete a 10 minute episode. in order to shorten the process, there are a few shortcuts we can take such as drawing pictures of characters rather than animating them for certain camera shots, or not using too many sound FX, or reusing vector sprites for different angles. If this topic picks up, I am willing to show some of my artwork for an example of how it might look.

THE TOOLS
My dad is a producer and owns a lot of software for animation, editing, sound design, texturing, website production etc... so in short I already possess everything we need except for help making it.
The software I would use for this animation are as follows: anime studio 8 debut (I can upgrade to pro if i need to), Final Cut pro (for editing),
Pro tools rig (for sound design(foley/voices/SFX)), Motion (for special FX and the opening sequence), various art kits and supplies.

THE COMMITMENT
All of this is NO GOOD, unless the COMMUNITY CAN HELP ME. I will need anywhere from 5-10 people in order to get a 10 minute episode done in a reasonable amount of time. On previous projects, i have needed script writers, producers, animators, a director, editors, voice talent, sound designers, story team, and music composers. I didn't find any help save 7 voice actors. I ended up having to do the gruntwork myself, but I got it done. It took a lot longer than i had hoped, but i got it done. If I can do it alone, than I believe we can go much faster, and with more quality if i have a small team of artists or editors. I need to make sure everyone is very serious about this enormous job. If i can get 5 people who will stick with me to the end, we'll have a pilot episode before the year is out.

Thanks for reading, if you are interested Please Respond.

Just a followup

In this series, I would like to stay as true to the game as possible, but still have an element of fan-fiction.
In my opinion, knights can't really die in the game, (they will blink their eyes while they are laying there on the floor if i remember right, dead ppl dont blink =P) but in the series, i would venture to explore a different approach. So it's more life-like instead of a game.

Here is my idea for the show:
SPIRAL KNIGHTS : the blade of genesis

The plot centers around me and my captain, Affairs, we travelled deep down into the clockwork and discovered a terrifying secret, this planet, is in infact a prison to a celestrial tyrant. His name is inceptron, some of u may seen that post called creation of cradle where i hypothesised the reason why cradle existed. So yeah, in a nut shell, this planet is the dreeding ground for this mad God and his goal isi to create the perfect being, the planet is formerly apart of his body, he made the planet through alchemy, just like we used alchemy to make weapons. Affair, my squad tsquad leader is the only one in the squad that was born on Isora, he told me that our people came here due to a major civil war back on the home planet, a war which raged bewteen the high ranking vangaurds and the revoulting lower ranks, years later, the war has devastated the entire planet, Isora can nolonger sustain all the knights, so they were forced to leave and find a new planet to settle.

Main character development:

Captain Affairs(actual player): a crooked, money loving rouge knight, he does mission not for the order but for his own benefit, during the assualt on grand arsenal, he defeated seerus and took his mask right before the facility is blown into kingdom come. Affair's action brought him alot of negative attention in the spiral order and he is demoted after he decided to wear the mask of the madman himself. His highlight is his relation with Desna, Desna, while acting normal amongst her mates, act totally different when she saw Affairs, often hinting him there is something he has forgotten in his past.

At the end they confronted each other, and Affair realized that back on the homeplanet, he and Desna were both orphans, lived in the slum of Isora, they promised each other that oneday, they will life together and earn alot of wealth in the proccess. But things changed when a limo stopped by the slum and a rich vanguard in the car took Desna away leaving Affairs behind, Affair thought Desna is going to have a great live in the rich scociety of the vanguard, however, Desna was treated more life a property than a person, she lived her teenage years in the mansion of the vanguards and was forced to work as a maid. She hoped that one day Affair may come and rescue her, but he never came. And when the civil war broke out, the mansion was stormed by the low ranks and Desna escaped the mansion with only one of her pulme cut off by a guard. ( her left eye was taken by a vangaurd through excessive beating). Affair, after his departure with Desna, eventually made himself a name in the slum gangs and by using a series of drugs, he managed to forget his painful past as well as Desna.

While sitll trying to figure out what he has forgotten, Desna's broken heart reached its limit. She took the matter into her own hand, as their levi balde and DA clashed into each other. Affiar realized that Desna whats him to remember the past through fighting, but realization only came along when Affair's DA went clean through Desna's breast plate...in her dying breath, Desna told him that she is glad that he hasn't forgotten her and slowly passed away.

Affairs, now sitting out side the arena, slow pulled his silversix against his mouth...then he decided not to suicide, instead, he lived on...TBC

FINAL WORD: well, i will tell my own character develop someother day, for now, this is the saddest story line i can come up with, i know it is distressing and abit of a NTR for some here who fantasied Desna for their GF. But still, an anime show based on SK can't just have action or enemies that we already faced. It needs storyline and don't gimme the crap where a short anime can't have good storyline, I have seen short Halo anime on Utube that broke my heart within minutes. Plot poeple, we need plots!

Ok, @ everybody since my last post

@ Autofire,
Lol, we'd make an exception. It's unrealistic that a knight would live his life with his eyes closed.

@Midnight
That would seem overly violent, and i wouldn't want people to be offended by the slightly "religious" elements. I would also want to avoid using real players as characters. I like some of the character personality ideas, but i don't think the story is close to what we're looking for. I never said I wanted an anime, I just said that that is one of my art/production styles. I don't think the show would come out looking very much like an anime.
Thanks for taking the time to type your ideas anyway. =) It was an interesting read.

As for what you said at the end, I agree that it would be interesting to add new elements to the story. Since no-one has attempted to make a series like this for SK before, being original is easy. I don't want to stray too far from the spiral knights story, just because i believe it would ruin it for some people if we did. I am okay with heart-breakers, but I do not specialize in them and do not have an efficient way to tell a story like that without being overly violent. But then again, there's a first time for everything.

@Aveond Don't know what u mean there.

Sidenote: I just finished a small animation of the randomized knight i showed earlier punching the air. Here is the link: http://vimeo.com/65411917

Well, wasn't the chili dog

Well, wasn't the chili dog eater fast blue hedgehog known as Sonic had THREE tv shows, 2 in the 90's and one in 2003?
If SEGA can fund 3 tv shows they can surely fund a TV spoof of Spiral Knights, increasing in both sales and advertisements of this game.

this is a great idea

I personally think thisis a great idea, providing the backstory to the game lots more info than we have, and might give off the sense of fear and danger the knights may have on cradle. I think this will help show the emotions the knights have, and it may well increase the number of people who play the game, as Grittle said.

If we can get started, i have time to burn.

For those of you who are interested in making a small fan-made version until (and if) we can convince Sega to make a TV show, the first thing we are going to need is the script. Since it was Thinslayers' idea, he will have to be active in order to begin production. Until then, I have been working on a protosword attack animation.

Thinslayer, if you could email me a rough draft for a script, perhaps we could collaborate.
