I'm trying to save up crowns for good stuff, but i can't seem to get much crowns. Please tell me where to get a lot.

Buy CE with real money and sell it on CE Market tab.
or if your currently not interested in joining the Dark Side just
play levels that gives the most crowns.
in Teir 1 is Snarbolax Boss Levels. in Teir 2 its Royal Jelly boss levels, Roarmoulus Twins Boss Levels and Arenas. in Teir 3 its just Lord vanaduke Boss Levels.

There should really be a FAQ for this type of stuff... first off, you should have visited new recruits, secondly here is a answer that took me less then a minute to find...

And if not, and you don't have access to Firestorm Citadel, try the Jelly king as he gives better profit, and less rockets then the twins would.

Honestly, I didn't do much fighting in Tier 1, as one of my early friends helped me get my 2* set. But I will say, those countless hours of running to the Arcade, fighting my way down to the Royal Jelly, and coming back up to sell minerals took MONTHS. But it was worth it once I got to Tier 3.

If you find the right 5*
If you find the right 5* Knight and ask for help, often times they'll gladly carry you to more profitable depths/missions. You'll die a lot but if they are a good player they won't mind reviving you and you'll make more crowns than normal :)
I've carried (with guild help) some 2* knights before through Vanaduke.
IGN is Lanieu if you need help...just no begging.

Grind the first 2 floors of Shadow of the Beast 5 times each day. You'll make 7500 crowns per 100 energy. When you reach tier 2, do the same thing in the Royal Jelly Palace.

And try selling mats, you can get a lot for some, such as blue and green shards and monster bones. You can look at the Auction House and browse to see what is selling and for how much. then you can either put up auctions or advertise them--the first is less time intensive, the second avoids the 10% fee on sold items taken from the seller and fees from unsold items.

Oh, another, make sure to sell our minerals now and then, it can be easy to forget if you use the missions tab to play in the arcade. I think the top price for a mineral is 4cr, make sure to shop around the 4 gates and don't sell for less than 3cr.

The best way would be a boss run, Try doing "The Collector" or "The Shadow Of The Beast" (Snarbolax)
Btw, "Boss Runs" can get you over 1,000 Cr :)

Now that this thread is resurrected, let me point you all to two resources.
First, "how do I make crowns quickly?" has been one of the most popular questions on these forums. There have been tens or even hundreds of threads on it. You can access these threads by searching (for example) Google: crowns fast site:forums.spiralknights.com.
Second, the guild Lancer Knightz collects data on various aspects of the game, including the crown payouts of missions. Their data don't include playing time, because that is so subjective. But they give you crowns per level, and you can factor in your own idea of how quickly you do the levels.

Nobody's data set is going to perfectly answer the question you asked, because only YOU know how fast YOU complete levels. Thus, you have to take other people's data sets, and factor in your own skill/style, to estimate which areas give YOU the fastest payoffs.

My way of earning crowns
If you ask me the fastest way of earning crowns is going down to the tier 2 terminals and buying some popular recipes from basil I have gotten TONS of crowns just by doing that its easy by any 3 * player some recipes you will have to list 2-3 times but at the end they all sell but there are always some recipes that nobody wants xD hope you get rich GL
