Helping Noobs Revisited, it pays off

Some time ago i suggested to everyone who thought the 'energy crisis' would kill new players, that they should do what they can by helping out a new player on occasion. A free piece of gear, and a little advice, whatever you can spare. I mean, will it kill you to give away 1 of your 20 calibers rather than sell it for 1-2k lol.

Anyhow, last night a new player was hawking his woefully inadequate wares, trying to raise 5 ce to craft his 1st sword. After trying to strike a deal with me, and striking out, i thought--poor guy, it is rough on you 1st night needing that last little bit of CE and just being out of luck-so i gave him the 5 CE for free, he crafted and 0 ce left. He was so green i had to explain to him how to switch havens so that i could give him the energy :)

Then i spent a good deal of time just chatting with him, perhaps an hour or more. I explained to him how to keep a keen eye on tradechat and WTB 'something he has'. Explained always joining in dungeons so you can hopefully skip the 1st few floors. Explained he should skip 1 star items and jump straight to 2 star. Explained how to buy/sell energy. Helped him manage his money. Explained UV's, and how people are grinding 2 star gear and that he should never buy 2 star for more than 2k at this point in his game(wolver cap/coat)--he immediately paid someone 900 crowns and 50 CE to craft a cap, and supplied the mats...so i re-explained to him the idea that someone has 20 helms they just want to get the hell away from, lol.

When he thought he was done for the night i reminded him that he should have a mist tank. Proudly, watched him use this energy to join 3 -t1 runs starting on floor 5 and higher.

When he had 35 energy left and 2k crowns, i had him wait in town and started a t1 run, and invited him to floor 3 an arena. Carried us thru that. Gave him 10 energy so he could finish the run. Then we got a treasure vault and a slimeway for floors 5 & 7 (woohooo, it was sweet). He came out with 6k crowns. Note: he was underpowered to go to floor 5 or so on his own. It was almost like i was rewarded by the game for doing a t1 run to help a new guy out.

Walked him thru selling his primals for hearthstone. Walked him thru how to buy energy and how to do so for cheapest amount possilbe. Showed him in town vendor w/ random recipes and explained to always buy hazebomb and why it's a cashcow recipe to sell. Gave him a haze bomb i had planned to just sell to vendor for 300.

It was a lot of fun for me, and we just chatted and played a little, for about 2-2.5 hours. He was super appreciative and it felt good to help out. It was his 1st night playing the game, and he was alienated by the ME and what not. Afterwards, he was really digging the game once he seen how easy it was to be sustainable.

AND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Between last night and this morning he made the plunge and bought CE (unbeknownst to me). AND...when i logged in this morning, i had a random piece of mail from him saying 'thanks so much', with a 500 CE attachment.

Good deeds are sometimes appreciated :)

I had a someone similar experience helping a great guy, he bought a weapon and trinket slot for me (I haven't used them because I wanna save those slots for when I have decent third weapons).

If more of the veterans did

If more of the veterans did this, you'd have made the game a great place :)

Unfortunately, this isn't the case. I try to help where I can but the number of astoundingly terribad (in many ways) players is too great. Just make it a point to help someone you think will return the favour to another new player in the future. This way the message/lesson is spread on.

About giving people materials

About giving people materials to "craft for you", it's a scam and it should be bannable like any other scam. They're not crafting for you, they're crafting for themselves and giving you a non-UV. Not advertising with "chance of UV" doesn't justify it. Crafting in this game implicitly has a chance of a UV.

not sure i understand what you are saying? he bought it with real money, from his job lol--in which case, how long he's been playing is irrelevant. Of course, i assume you just missed that sentence in the original post.

You probably taught him the puppy exploit and profited off of him being ultimately banned for cheating.

Shame on you, you bad person.

From what I understand, the

From what I understand, the primal/hearthstone thing is an exploit. Kudos on teaching them that. I was foolish when I learned about it, thinking "Oh man, that's sweet!" Until I actually thought about it, and learned from others that it's just a bug they haven't fixed, essentially. I mean, really? Why is that the only 2star item that sells for 1200? Also, it's a 3star item. But wait, I thought Warm Hearthstone was the 3star? Yeh, exactly. If that's really intentional, though, then I don't even. But I'm pretty certain it was just an oversight on their part, and when they're done catering to everyone's desires (cough Auction House cough), they'll probably get around to fixing it, among other things.

Also, selling them for 1k is a 2k loss (at least, considering the price of the 50 CE required to make it is roughly 2.3k right now) on each Calibur sold. And it's better than just giving hand outs, because that teaches them responsibility, and that they can't get everything for free, just because they're new. It's also better on the seller's end, because then they don't have a thousand new people begging them for handouts all the time by enforcing a price, even if means a loss rather than profiting.

So nice to hear stories like

So nice to hear stories like this! Really nice of you to help this guy, and he's cool for not taking it for granted. Wish all players would be like this.

Also, excuse the noobnes, but what's the primals/hearthstone thing?

Kaybol

the primals/hearthstone thing

what's the primals/hearthstone thing?

It's buying Hearthstones with your Primal Sparks, which pays out 240 crowns per token (1200 crowns for each 5 tokens spent) when you sell them to an NPC trader. It's the best crown value you can get for your Primal Sparks and an easy way to get some extra spending money.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the puppy exploit.

edit: I didn't know there's people actually considering the above an exploit. If it is, then it's totally not obvious to me.

If its a bug, it's been

If its a bug, it's been reported multiple times as far back as a month ago. If they wanted it fixed, they would've fixed it, they fixed other things in that time period.
http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Talk:Trinket

And it appears every few topics or so, here's one:
http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/6218

GMs tend to watch stuff and edit stuff, I've never seen a post modded for discussing that whereas I have seen stuff about in game files and improper language being modded. So if it's bad, they have been letting it go for a "long" time. I know it wouldn't take that long to change a 3 star back to a 2 star if they didn't want it to stay that way for awhile, maybe its more of an introductionary thing, but even the star level of critter carapaces changed since the beginning. If you reaaaaaaaaally feel its wrong, make sure you submit your "bug report" f2 and point it out, even though its already been pointed out. Now might be the perfect time since a gameplay update may come soon (I'm guessing this based off of content releases so far).

Anyway primals/hearthstone thing, go to brinks and find the hearthstone trinket that costs 5 primal sparks (just in case it is "fixed" someday make sure it says three stars), just buy those and sell them to the NPC vendor (Kozma is closest). You gain 1200 crowns for every three star trinket. The hearthstone one is the only one that costs just 5 tokens yet is still three star, even if its in appearance only.

EDIT: Kaybol ninja'd me with an answer but I'm going to keep my post as it is lol..

Oh I see. Thanks for the quick answer Kaybol and Negima! Wish I had known about this back when I was new and an extra 1200 crowns would have come in very handy.

Really cool man, I have made a few new players full 2* gear (after buying a good amount of CE). How I see it is, most of the mats for 1* and 2* gear players in T3 have just stacking up, so why not just help someone out.

I'm sorry, but what part of

I'm sorry, but what part of having two three star items in the same line makes any sense? It's obviously a problem, and why they haven't fixed it yet is beyond me. Maybe it's a test to see how many people actually care about bugs/exploits.

I've already submitted a bug report. And quite frankly, the puppy thing isn't fixed yet, is it? So your point is moot. It's only recently been discovered, but how long has it actually been in existence? It could only have been discovered recently because the rarity of love puppies has decreased.

But really, they're probably working on a million other things right now, so it's probably just an oversight. Will it ever be fixed? I have no idea. But the fact remains that it's a problem. And it definitely doesn't sit well with me when I hear people abusing this.

And quite frankly, I doubt that many people have reported it, considering how "profitable" it is.

Hearthstone: It's reported in

Hearthstone: It's reported in that wiki article one month ago, you know how many updates we've had since then? And even then one of those was a star level changing update (critter carapace was changed for 3 star to 2 star). They know how to change star levels with relative ease.

And I don't know anything about a love puppy thing, I have a faint idea but I don't use trinkets (other than selling them to Kozma 8D) so its of no importance to me.

As far as things that make sense, why is that a cavet hall or spiral court (I forgot which) where the entrance is right beside the exit. That makes that stage the easiest in the game (should you choose to leave). The only stage easier than that is an open run through of a deconstruction zone (where the exit isn't blocked by a key). Even treasure vaults require more strategy than that to get out of.

I find it hard to believe that over an entire month, they aren't intentionally looking over this on purpose. Like I said, more like an introductionary thing perhaps, what with energy prices and all, new players (and old ones) could use a relatively easy 1200 crowns. It still requires time and investment to come across those sparks. And indirectly it could cost you nearly 1200 crowns to actively get those anyway (pretending like energy went back to 4000 per 100, then it'd take 3 trips to a stage to get two sparks each just to make your money back from that, it would allow you however to take whatever crowns and mats you gained from that stage as pure profit).

Honestly, running JK dedicatedly can be way worse than that. As long as you know your team can win then you are guaranteed 3 jelly tokens. Well despite everything, I'm a LAZY guy about selling fausts and avengers, so I knowingly turn mine into jelly equipment to sell to Kozma. 3500 ea, effectively 233 per token. While that's less than the 240 a primal spark can get me, I know I can ALWAYS get more Jelly tokens relatively quickly and easily (with perhaps a primal spark as a reward as well).
10 energy to enter (-500) + 1 revive (-250) = 750. 3 JK tokens = 699. Just with only that loss is -51 crowns, BUT the boxes after that as well as the offset of getting a fourth Jelly Gem AND the minerals a four person party will carry out more than cover the last 51 crowns.

So we'll see if the next update they wanna fix that one line of star level coding. If they do, yay, if they don't YAY. Helps me, helps newer players like in the original post. Costs me nothing and doesn't affect business, in fact, creates a few more business transactions than there would be without.

When I first started someone

When I first started someone hooked me up with a sword and shield. I thought it was super awesome at the time, so now that I'm a veteran myself I decided to take someone under my wing. Pay it forward and all that.

So I give a newb a sword and shield. I got an email from him recently. I'm sort of thinking, "Oh, how nice, he didn't have to repay me with anything!" I open the letter and it's just a whole grocery list of more stuff he wants.

Eff you buddy.
