Add an aim button

I'm currently playing Spiral Knights with a single stick on my gamepad. It feels pretty tactile and retro, and it's not too hard adjusting to it and playing at about the same level of efficiency as I would with two sticks. Despite being forced into the control scheme through a faulty right stick, I would, if possible, like to continue using this playstyle onward. Moving and aiming with the same stick, however, presents a few limitations.

While there is already a button for disabling aiming, allowing me to strafe sideways and backwards while concentrating fire in one direction, there is no button for disabling movement, allowing me to aim without moving. This can be crucial if I'm close to hazards or attacking enemies, and I'd like to aim in the direction of said hazard or enemy. Such a button would also allow for precision walking, with the player tapping the button to adjust movement speed to their preferred pace, crucial in bullet-heavy scenarios.

Also, a crosshair for people not using mice would be pretty cool.

This game is specifically made for PCs only, and not on other platforms. All third party software or hardware for modification of the gameplay of this game is on your own accord, the game developers are not responsible for any problems you faced with your modified game.

Though not specified in the ToS, you will not be provided with any reimbursement for any problems you faced, especially if it is self-imposed. You are responsible for your personal issues, especially with software or tools that are not being supported by the game itself.

Basically saying, you should try getting a new controller, not ask for OOO to make something that SK itself does not support. A mouse and keyboard has been doing a fine job preventing you from walking onto hazards.

Zaffy, OOO has advertised the official gamepad support. Heck, why would we have analogue movement with sticks if OOO gave not a single fudge? Besides, there are keyboard-only players, too. These could also benefit from such a button.

There's nothing unofficial about gamepads.

There you have it! Two devs, including the lead designer himself, use gamepads.

Edit: I forgot to refer you to this: http://pastebin.com/d6UtJmPv
Back when I was a scrub, I used quick weapons and thus clicked an awful lot, leading to some pain in my right arm. I sent a ticked about making a macro and I got a reply, naysaying and recommending a gamepad.

Using a game pad is not against the terms of services, the game natively supports them.

What is the already existing strafe button meant for if not the exact situation I'm in?

Edit: Consider this post from Boswick.

"If you go with Zelda-like controls, or simply don't have two control pads/sticks on your gamepad, be sure to set one of the shoulder buttons (or similar input) to use the Strafe command. While you hold down the Strafe button, your character will "lock" to face a given direction. This will help a lot for the run & gun bits of the game."

I have nothing to add to this thread but I woke up with this in my head.

D;

Perhaps I was a little uninformed, but I don't think that a single stick is going to help, if the game developers themselves use Xbox controllers, which have 2 sticks. Oh wells. Anyways, who else uses single sticks? I don't think there is enough people to draw attention to this problem.

Although single stick isn't all that common, you see a lot of people who play with arrow keys. The aim button would help those guys aim without moving, too.

The official OOO gamepad layout wants us to move and aim with the same stick.

I still need an aim button if you want me to use guns without walking into spikes and enemies, guys.

You mean like as the inverse to the strafe key? Instead of locking your aiming to one position and moving around, you want to lock your movement and look around? As much as I can say this would only be mildly useful, and I'm less in support of this since you have a broken gamepad (and should go out of your way to buy a new one instead of asking developers to go out of their way to make yours work)

I did. My gamepad is 100% functional. I don't know if I mentioned this, but the official OOO gamepad layout wants us to move and aim with the same stick.

Well then remap it. Your left stick moves, your right stick aims.

That's well and fine but if one is meant to aim and move with seperate inputs why does the strafe button even exist? The existence of a strafe button necessitates the existence of an aim button.

Did I mention the official OOO gamepad layout wants us to move and aim with the same stick and also prominently features the strafe button?

The strafe button was to be used in conjunction with the arrow keys, before their function was changed.

Do you not need to aim things without moving when using arrow keys?

And that's the reason why the arrow key function was changed.

Yet the strafe button is still there. I'm gonna keep linking to the strafe button being right there in the official gamepad layout until you acknowledge it.

The strafe button is for controllers that only have one toggle for movement (a.k.a the D-Pad) where players have the directions mapped to the old Arrow Key settings. That's why the second toggle isn't in use by default.
For controllers that do have two toggles in addition to the D-Pad, all you have to do is map the left toggle to Move North/South/East/West and the right toggle to Face North/South/East/West and unmap the Strafe key (because with two toggles it's not needed)

What Three Rings have done is given multi-toggle controllers more space to work with, while still leaving in the support for single-toggle controllers (which very few people have anyway) in the game so players with multi-toggle controllers that are still using it aren't forced to suddenly relearn all the controls and change their style of play.

What's this changed arrow key functionality everyone's talking about? If you mean the recent update, you can still make them work the old way...

I'm saying how the Arrow Key controls where simplified, making it so that players can now more professionally control the character with two toggles.

They left the ability to set the arrow keys back to their old control style so that people with one toggle aren't left out.

Zeddy wants a button that allows him to control the character as professionally as he would with two toggles, by just using one toggle and a button that switches the toggle's function between each toggle that you'd have if you were using a dual-toggle controller.
