Spiral Knights practically is a console game. It's inspired by a variety of console games and controls like a console game. A lot of developers and moderators, and not the least players play this game using console controllers, myself included. The lack of a crosshair makes AT a necessity to aim at enemies with any sort of precision using controllers and playing with stuff like arrow keys. A lot of people do that too.

Not everyone even have a mouse to play the game with. Some people are on laptops, and trackpads are horrible for aiming around in games. Some may even prefer to not use a mouse even if they have one. I have several friends who stick to gamepad-friendly games on PC to avoid stress on their hands. I do the same simply because I like using gamepads better than mouse/keyboard.

Auto-target cannot be removed because it would reduce accessibility. Since some very powerful weapons are hidden behind Krogmo coin walls, reducing accessibility even in just Lockdown is not an option, either.

I hear lots of complaints that "Autoaim turns flourish combo users completely around mid combo and can kill people behind them"

Um, HELLO?
1. Flourish combos have always been able to be changed 180 degrees in between swings
2. If you haven't noticed, auto target doesn't target people you are not facing.

It's not hard to hover your mouse over someone who thinks they dodged your first attack and plunge the second, more powerful attack straight into them.

If "combo spammers" are so easy to beat, then why does everybody have a good old whinge at people who utilize the full combo? In the time people spend whining about combo spamming, they could have shut their trap and killed the person.

@Hex

Without AA, turning around mid-combo has, let's say, a 15% chance of hitting your target. With AA, that chance is increased to something more like 60%. It just gives you more luck and wiggle room across the board. (which is bad)

@Noklip, the chance to hit is partially based on latency and accurate prediction without AT on. Also, I normally try to stay in situations where my back is never to the opponent unless I'm running away or trying a feint attack.

Leave console games out of this. They all have corrected aiming. Blame inaccurate analog joysticks.

I turn off AT on Console as it messes up my aiming, just as it does so on SK. You can't blame joysticks as they are only as accurate as the player.

Some people are on laptops, and trackpads are horrible for aiming around in games.

For the record, I play on a laptop and use a mouse/keyboard. It's possible to buy a mouse - wired or not - with a USB attachment (For lack of a better word).

Either way, AT probably isn't a bad thing so much as it is disagreeable to some; from what I can tell, people believe players who use it have no skill (Which is fair enough) and must be vilified (Which isn't).

Well, If you have half a

Well,

If you have half a brain, it takes you about two seconds to realize if a person is using AT or not. Less time if you glance around the room before the match begins to see who you're playing. People tend to stick with their style.

You see how they play and what they use, and you adapt to it. Honestly AT is pretty easy to avoid.
If you get stung the 100th time by the AT no-name VOG who full conbos his flourish, the problem is probably on your end.
If you're playing from Australia and this your latency is just ridiculous, adapt by changing classes. Recon sword gives you the first hit a lot - which is sometimes just enough... just an example.

ASI, Ping, PC performance are three advantages that are much bigger then AT will ever be
(not even going into the weapon balance issue, that can also be worked around).

I use AT on my sentenza more and more - and if that's your biggest issue I really don't know what to say besides stop being predictable or standing still.
