JUST PLAIN AWESOME
{ UI World Championship }
The Final Match :
Zopyros-II VS Cherub (Ian)
Zopyros-II Wins!!
Nick fires Ian, and hire Zopyros-II instead of him.
Congratulations Zopyros-II.
No, I am not exaggerating. +1
Note: I love you Cherub. <3
That does raise a good question. Who wrote out the mandate stating that there was to be a new UI?
While I really am flattered by everyone saying I'm a genius for coming up with this, it feels wrong to say that in my opinion. ):
All I did was take Ian's and Boswick's original UI, something that they created, and edited it a little bit. If anything, it's more fitting to wish that they went back to their old ways instead of praising me.
Tell you what. If I get the time this weekend, I'll cook up my own UI. While I'll definitely still be influenced by OOO's original UI, it will be something of my own. Not something that I just added stuff onto.
I'd feel more proud of that than taking credit for Ian's and Boswick's old work.
EDIT: Haha! I just noticed that the forum mods edited part of my title! HA!
Well, I guess the old one was pretty rude sounding... doesn't stop it from being any less true though...
Oh yeah the suggestions forum it's basically a "trashcan" with a more friendly way of saying it. Your design of the UI is just awesome they should implement your one instead of this horrible thing.
+1
Sending support ticket to read this suggestion now If I remember, which is most likely no...
I want our old UI back I don't look the "box everything" mentality we got going on here on sk it makes it look cheesy and low budget.
Now OOO I know were not the best MMO out their with the best graphics engine and such but our old UI before the patch was just fine. I missed my name color and the old UI is easier to navigate, regardless of what you thought the majority of the players wanted. I mean we know you, know we want it back you obviously monitor our conversations. Anyway the point being is the Old UI was better we don't need a health or shield bar while not in the colorworks, We don't need to box everything into just a few buttons, WE DON'T NEED this UI because like a wise man once said "don't fix what isn't broken" because did anyone ask for this? Probably. But this UI needs a serious design change to be called legitimate I mean the way it looks makes me feel like I'm playing Adventure Quest Worlds or something but I'm not. We're playing spiral knights. With that said bring back the old UI please let us have our colors back because to us we liked it that way.
Thanks, Zakura .
Man, this UI just makes the new one looks worse than it already is. The guy that designed that awful thing should learn a thing or two from you about UIs.
+1
and i can't recognize when my allied got vitapod or drop mine..
just to remember
/sigh
First of all, I'd like to say, job well done, but there are a few things I don't like about your redesign. Please don't take this as me disliking this, I prefer it over our new UI.
1) It is unclear which way one needs to swap weapons to get to the one they wish (if that sentence makes sense). I'd add a fourth circle to the weapons there, and then have a ring around the equipped weapon, as well as the large circle displaying it. Like this http://i49.tinypic.com/aax7w1.png Please take this as concept, I know I have little to no artistic talent. The idea is that the yellow would rotate as different weapons were selected. The small icons would remain in the same spot.
2) The vials are back at the top. I play fullscreen, but I do know people have trouble with grabbing the window when trying to drop vials. Not sure what can be done though =/
3) VERY minor niggle, but I fear that when the social and inventory tabs are minimised, the extra space will look ugly.
But yes, very well done.
I dont care if this is still on the front page
This suggestion deserves a bump
Wait, I has question:
will the health overlap with different colors like the new UI? or be like the old UI and make the great wall of red pips?
It should be overlapping and split into groups of five with 20 or 30 per level, best of both worlds.
@Gfjmember
1- I thought of that for the weapon wheel UI after I had finalized everything and posted it, but thanks for the idea nonetheless.
2- I had that problem too when I was playing in a window, but since I was just using the old one as a template, I felt that I had to keep vials there. If I get time to make my own, I'll move it elsewhere.
3- Yeah, I should have shown what they would look like once collapsed/hidden...
@Grittle and Klipik
I actually really don't like the idea of overlapping health. At a glance, it's harder to gain the same information as looking at a single bar.
- With multiple bars, you have to remember what colors indicate more health, how much health before it starts to overlap, and what indicates lost health.
- On a single health bar, all you have to remember is what color is health and what color isn't. MUCH easier to read at a single glance.
The only situation where I accept multiple health bars is up against a high endurance boss. You want the boss to last a long time and for the player to feel like the boss has high endurance, but also for the player to actually to feel like they're damaging the boss. A single bar of health on the boss would barely go down from a single hit, if at all. Multiple bars on the other hand can go down fast and give the player a sense of achievement, but still make them realize that this fight is going to take a while.
The Health/Shield Bar, what decides whether it expands or contracts, if it does at all? Or will it just remain that same size, with Pips getting more and more squashed into that same space.
If you have enough health to cause overlapping, you don't really need to worry about any colors besides the lowest level. If, for example using the new/curent UI, you have half gold health, you know you're not anywhere close to dying. I actually like the new HP bar system (But I think it should be grouped into fives for easier counting), the placement is my main problem with it.
While I see your point, that just causes carelessness in my opinion. It gives a false sense of security and makes you think you can eat more shots than you really can.
Then again, I guess it might be more of a personal thing for me. I just don't like the idea. A single bar just reads so much better to me.
Actually, according this thread, it is impossible to get Gold Health.
Almost full Silver Health? Yes.
At least one Gold Pip? Never.
I made that thread after that post, since that post reminded me I'd never seen gold hp.
OOO hold on! If your reading this ... hire the godam guy on the spot already... this guy is a talented genious.
"Its like what they say: you win some, you lose some"
- Luigi
This is exactly why I think OOO should just ask the players before trying to do anythin major (seeing as how much time might have been wasted developing this joke of a new UI). Reading the forums I know that SK has some great players who have plenty of ideas to offer to improve the game (or should I say HAD great players? because considerable amount of people have quit seeing the trend of the updates). Please Devs i honestly dont know if I should trust u guys anymore.. 2 years ago when u guys would say "we have plans dont worry" I would have believed you, but these update trend is horrible I think to put the game back in the right direction the dev team should definitely ask the player base to spell out what we want and then ask us before trying to do anything new as every new update seems worse than the last. (I am sorry if this is very offensive but pls we LOVE this game. The way it WAS, pure awesomeness and fun. Now I see that the game is being DUMBED down and being made for kids who like to play barbie dolls and get attracted to shiny stuffz... PLS get back to the right direction turn around 180 DEGREES pls, the direction the game is heading is the same direction A BLACK HOODED FIGURE WITH A SCYTHE is standing.)
/think maybe I should force myself to stop playing because I feel like this has become a game for 8-12 year old kids.
Anyways Zopyros that UI looks absolutely great, I play on low quality as to not lag so hope the UI is preserved. But thank u for taking the time to put in something great in the name of this wonderful yet DETERIORATING game called Spiral Knights.
@Grittle
I'm sorry Luigi, you were always my favorite brother, but that defeatist attitude is really holding you back! You jump higher, run faster, can make fire AND frickin' lightning! You're the best around!
Anyways, I don't want to accept defeat until someone from OOO actually answers why they changed the UI and why they felt it was better than the old one! I will never back down!
... Unless I just feel that OOO is beyond hope, then I'm out. I'm better off making my own game at that point. Which I'm seriously considering at this point...
EDIT:
Kalaina-Elderfall has broken down everything wrong in the entire new UI.
I agree with everything said there 100%.
This is much MUCH better. If OOO doesn't use this design, or something similar eventually, I'd be incredibly disappointed. I'm already upset about the current design, but if no change is made even after they've received numerous complaints, and constructive feedback such as your description along with a FREAKNIG BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE, then OOO would be doing nothing more than ignoring some of the best advice they've been given in the suggestions section in a while. It's one thing to make a mistake and correct it. It's so much worse to make a mistake, and then ignore the problem after this kind of good criticism has been given.
I personally think this is sexier than the old UI.
All they need to do is add widescreen support (Laptop screens are small) and Spiral Knights will be better than ever aesthetically.
+1
I swear! They moved it, they at least need to give it recognition! This is just a great design for the UI over the current one!
This UI is way better looking than the old or the new UI they have made. Would be nice if they had an switch UI option so all 3 could be used or others people make.
But Double the UIs = Double the work
And we are lazy people
This...
I like the current UI, despite its minuses. This one stomps it IMO.
I love this interface u made its amazing OOO should take this idea into account
I'm almost speechless on how good this is. Really hope this makes it into the game because this UI, like Autofire said, just completely outshines the current UI in game. Everything is in one spot without your eyes doing a dance all over a monitor screen.
+1 to you mate. Cheers.
It barely even differs from the old user interface... It just looks like you took pieces and bits of the new user interface and scribbled them all onto the old user interface...
OOOs put in hours of hard work and determination trying to completely make Spiral Knights look like a new game, just for you. Now you're telling them to ditch the hard work and determination they put into the new user interface, and bring back the exact same user interface with a few minor improvements...
Also, you do realize a user interface isn't just a mini map, party menu, health bars, and a chat... It's MUCH more than that, so make sure you know that to implement this, OOOs would have to actually remake the NPC chat, party finder menu, Coliseum menu, Auction House menu, chat menu, Arsenal menu, crafting menu, NPC trade menu's, and so much more. I'm just saying, before you tell OOOs to go back to the old user interface, realize that it's not something anyone would be willing to do. They might make a little improvements on the new user interface, but what you want? That's not going to happen.
EDIT: If you're wondering why I'm being so "mean," it's mainly because you said that OOOs new user interface was "crappy." don't try to sugarcoat it later on.
Don't you see Pasmack? We love this UI because it matches the feel of the old UI we love! The New UI is "meh", has some redeeming factors and such, but I love the Old UI with the same reason I choose Runescape 07 over Runescape Evolution of Combat: Its more simple, efficient, and I grown into it.
New UI is functionally worse than the old UI. That's why we want a change.
It perfectly meshes the old version and the new ui into a simple, efficient, space saving ui :D I really like it because it has all the features of the new ui but less screen clutter... A LOT less screen clutter.
@Pawsmack
I think you missed the point of me using the old combat UI as a template for my redesign. I wanted to show that the new combat UI was a general mess that achieved absolutely NOTHING that the old UI couldn't have done with just a few changes.
Also, I understand the extent of OOO's UI change. The different textures for the menus, buttons, windows, and a dozen other things. That's not what most players stare at all day, though. They're still pretty ugly compared to the old one though. Harsh contrasts, over saturated colors, that general "shiny" look to make this two year old game look "new." Though now it looks like a cheesy game from the 90s now... so it looks older...?
I only made that portion of the UI because that was the part that was most changed (and also because recreating every window of the game would have taken far more time than this. Just THAT took me a couple hours to do). Everything else is still functionally the same, just glossier and shinier. The combat UI, the one that's always in our face and the ones we use the most, was what changed. How the Health meter that we've spent two years looking at the bottom of the screen was suddenly moved to the top left, an area generally outside of our normal field of view and an area that we never used for vital information before. How now there's an annoyingly large weapon wheel that pops up in the MIDDLE of the screen, covering up an very important area AKA the area where monsters can beat your head in from. How our Energy system is hidden behind a menu now and how we can't even see it until we need to actually use it. And that leads to a whole slew of other problems especially since the elevator tab system is far less intuitive now.
Granted, I also don't understand all the internal work involved with making a new UI. The coding for the buttons, collapsing menus, etc. But you'd think that sometime down that long line of coding and testing, OOO would have noticed, "Hey, this thing doesn't really fit the look of our game. We probably shouldn't put it in or maybe get some feedback from the players." They never did and now the majority of the forums are telling them why it's bad.
And it's not like they even did a good and thorough job on it, I'm finding remnants of the old UI that just sticks out like a sore thumb all over the place. Highlighting your Knight at log-in, the loading screens, and a few others. It's ugly, plus a bad job on top of that.
This entire UI just screams bad design. There are a dozen more posts telling in more detail why it is. Yes, the UI functions. But so would a UI using lime green and pink-as-hell colors. That's the reason we don't like it. The fact that the established look of the game, a look built upon for two years, was suddenly and abruptly changed at the drop of a hat into something far less unique and far more ugly.
Nice piece of work :D
I guess i would have done it differently, but, at least you've done something ^^
Apologies in advance, the following random thoughts might be a bit off-subject :
Makes me wonder if the current U.I. has really been submitted to a proper beta-test...
Was that U.I. taken a close look at it by testers ? The tester's attention might have just been driven to others aspect of the new U.I.
You only get access to beta-tests if you have purchased something in-game with real money, right ? This way, OOO only gets feedback from people who pay to play... Then i assume, OOO has other tester's profiles.
So, who were the beta-testers ? PvE players ? Lockdown players ? Newbies ? Employees ?
Or just, were the tester's feedback taken in account ?
That just makes me wish i had purchased something IG and got access to the test. Then, i would have clearly told OOO that "wheel of weps" was a bad idea. (See, i recently made an account here on the only purpose of that : Petition : remove this wheel of weps )
One last thing, i don't really like the current models of the vials, they look like they're from another game : the colours and shapes don't fit at all in the game-design. It looks like some old ideas brought back from some dev's attic. Also, when i see one on the floor, i don't know instantly what is it (is that freeze or shock, dammit?) and this is wrong. when i started the game, i could recognize which one was picked, the second time i just picked it.
I sincerely hope that the U.I. will soon be entirely customizable. That detail is so major, it makes the difference between little and big games.
@Psyclown
yes, I saw the new T1 Health Capsule and I was like
What the hell is that?
