Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Dash and Shield Bash discussion thread (upcoming feature)
It's interesting, but I shouldn't by hyped so much....
A small question:
Would this be implemented in Lockdown too? Because I can't see how this would work...
People, prepare yourself for an even more OP wrh. Enjoy. But on a serious note, I really like the shield bash idea
I like the sound of these new mechanics, they will add some interesting new gameplay.
But please please please compensate this with a monster buff, if only a little one. Shield bumping, and standard dodging already do a great job of avoiding attacks.
I hope this cool-down feature is long enough to make this new dash as a 'last-resort' mechanic, seeing as it grants limited invulnerability. It makes sense to have this feature in place so when you are very low on health you can dash away to safety to avoid those final blows.
All-in-all, exciting times.
NEW CONTENT!!!
Ah, come on Nick. You have to stop doing this to me. Do you have any idea how hard it is to defend OOO when you go and do stuff like this?
I hope you don't mind if I play in the no new content in 15 months thread some more. Don't worry. I'll only say all the things you wish you could say. :P
But... I hope you make the enemies tougher soon too.
first reaction: buffs to knights? noooooooooooooooo
then:
ok, if everything is balanced it should affect gameplay without destroying difficulty. again. I really wish for monsters buff anyway.
so:
dash: if it's an uncontrollable but still usable dash it's fine. I mean, if you cannot control the distance, you should use it to avoid. anyway, this is an attack buff, because avoiding means you don't have much defense.
bash: it depends on all the statement of nick. meaning: how much shield health is taken away, how much knockback is dealt, how much strong is stun dealt. oh, and this too is an attack buff, because of the interrupt. enemies don't touch you with this.
overall: I really hope that this won't lead to invincibility due to dash-bash-dash-bash combo. it's all about cooldown. also I'm starting to worry. too many keys. can somone please say how will those skills (yes they are) will be activated?
I saw this earlier, but I couldn't post. As a wasdf player(f is shield) whith mouse facing, the keys are fine for me (I've still got q and e), but it would be hard for laptops, gamepads, etc. to find buttons, so yeah. But as I don't judge before something happens, and I don't see any unreasonable details (I mean, the dash is pretty much a dodge, of course it'll need invincibility frames to be helpful.)I'll let you guys go back to discussing it.
The proto shield should do the most damage (>^^>) huh duh ^^
I'm a little worried about the amount of buttons being added... If the Sprites are going to have three buttons and this is going to add two, then some players are going to have difficulty mapping the extra buttons to comfortable places. Otherwise, I'm... not that excited about this bashing and dashing.
I sincerely hope they have individual key-bindings, and not a 'double-click' function, i.e. double-click DEFEND to Shield Bash or something similar, as I imagine that becoming aggravating in hectic situations.
Other than that, sounds cool, but us Knights are kinda getting really powerful compared to our adversaries now, which is a let down truth be told. Hope our enemies become stronger in turn so that they can match up to our new tricks, especially with the up and coming Battle Sprites joining our forces.
They say the dash will let you escape " from being surrounded by more agile monsters."
Yet they are nerfing devilites and greavers :P
I know what this is readying for!
Once a Trotodrone started harassing you at close range, you couldn't escape because their attacks launched them very far forward. With the rate they attacked at and their homing ability, you couldn't escape them!
Either that or they have something in store for wolvers...I mean, wolvers are supposed to be the most agile thing in the game! If they have poor attacks, maybe they are going to make up for it by becoming the next devilite in dodging and being annoying?
@Juances
This was most likely a spot decision. It looks to me like someone read my weapons survey. I'm sure they will cancel the nerfs. In fact, I'm going to create a video of me vs 5 greaver and show them how easy they really are. I'm not even sure they acknowledge the existence of shield canceling.
One thing though that you can look forward to is the PUSHED existence of party roles. Now currently we have something similar, but usually it only comes out during an upscale of difficulty like in SLs. For instance, I recently ran a SL in proto with my friends. One of us was assigned turrets, the other was given the task of debuffing via haze, one with using polaris defensively to protect debuffer and the other for direct damage. These roles already existed in endgame, but ironically because they aren't releasing any more content like this they have to force these roles into existence.
Downscaling the difficulty across the board will only make party roles less useful. Please Nick I hope you're reading this because teamwork is only necessary when the job is too big for one person regardless of skill level. Giving us these techniques raises the skill floor by a huge margin.
You don't need two seperate buttons for this feature: Pressing the dash button dashes, pressing the dash button while your shield is up and at full strength performs a shield bash.
if possible, ill mostly be using it to move faster
in combat itd take getting used to. would be fun in pvp i guess - also my interest in sk pve is really small atm
oh yea and..i can see ppl using the dash to get away from their hated nitronomes hahahaha^^
hey how about making some agile boss, who u have to grind in order to unlock the ability? im just suggesting dont rage me *leaves thread carefully*
I wonder if you'll be able to cancel the dash? Or perhaps attack while dashing? I don't think it will be anything like the striker dash, but more like a quick burst in the direction you are facing. If you're able to dash cancel an attack, then cancelling a sword like Gran Faust would prove more valuable in Lockdown than any other tactic.
-About to miss 2nd swing, dash cancel the swing
I've actually thought about sprinting/dashing for a while now, and how useful it'd be.
+1 for dashing
+1 for shield bashing
I dunno how shield bashing will actually work, but we'll see.
YEAAAAH
I want to run all over the place now.
Can I dash in haven?
I wanna dash in haven.
Let us dash around haven.
If you dash into a wall, will you fall over? (Like Almirians falling over when overloaded with dmg)
If I dash into an enemy, will It knock it back?
How long till dashing?
DAAASHING!!!!
Against the new fiend enemies, you're really going to NEED these new mechanics.
All over the clockworks dashing white wolvers will be doing the the dance of my people.
But yeah... Will the shield bash power/shield drain amount will be related to the strength of your shield? So Swiftstrike will have a poor bash where as Volcanic Plate Shield will have a big bash? If so will it be related to Star level, or defense?
Will the bash take the same amount off your shield health in Tier 1 as in Tier 3? Or is it related to tier/monster type?
This reminds me a lot of something I suggested a while back, counterattacks spending shield bar > http://forums.spiralknights.com/es/node/72986 - Though it seems that we will get both a shield bash and a dash separately with cooldowns.
Dash will help swordies, and shieldbash gunners and bombers (and surrounded swordies) it doesn't seem a bad "upgrade" to us. Though this rises a question: will Mechaknights also get these upgrades? Will we see a new "elite mechaknight" instead?
Also, I can't help but question if the stun that shieldbash will inflict make all stunning weaponry obsolete. Will all shields stun-damage the same? If not, will there be an "offensive" shield?
I will of course test all this when the game implements it, and maybe me and my friends' interest will catch on again. Glad to see the game evolving.
@Neodasus
Dude stop. You need a psychiatrist. Feelings of grander aren’t healthy.
“This was most likely a spot decision. It looks to me like someone read my weapons survey.”
“Does OOO hate money?”
“I feel like if I throw enough money at OOO things can get going.”
You know, the insane attack the sanity of others believing they are sane and it’s everyone else that’s screwed up.
“There an OOO defense force? Seriously? Dang dude, that's like borderline Stockholm syndrome.”
Further evidence of this mental health issue is to be so delusional you see victimization's that don’t exist especially if you are trying to convince others that they are being victimized when they aren’t.
“You're being held hostage and you're the last to realize it.”
Yes, I took it out of context. That followed this and actually fits in more with your super power of x-ray vision:
“How many times do you run Vana each day? Yeah. For what exactly?”
You have no freaking idea what I do when I play demonstrated by the ? after the “each day” but you say I am doing it and therefore I must be therefore you have found the victimization that doesn’t exist but you did a great job of creating it.
Having super powers like x-ray vision into what others are doing in personal areas like their game accounts/bank accounts is also quite delusional.
“OOO defense force is almost ALWAYS F2P.”
More proof of your delusional thoughts… I have friends who do this therefore I’m the professional.
“Yeah, creating new AI and character models is WORK, I have friends that do this every day. However it's not as impossible as alot of people make it out to be. It's not magic, it's science.”
Run grasshopper to your nearest mental health clinic. You’re in need of some serious help.
You don't need two seperate buttons for this feature: Pressing the dash button dashes, pressing the dash button while your shield is up and at full strength performs a shield bash.
Didn't think of that. Makes sense, although it doesn't do much to put my previous fears at ease.
As a wasdf player(f is shield) whith mouse facing, the keys are fine for me (I've still got q and e), but it would be hard for laptops, gamepads, etc. to find buttons, so yeah.
I just re-read this, and I can't see your argument for Laptop users having a harder time than PC users concerning KB/M mapping.
Hmmm... if shield bashin will be avaible on LD it will add some point of playing guardian. :)
Dash will change SK forever. Pretty good idea. Hope it wont be avaible when playing Striker on LD. As Byas said, that will be horror. ;/
IMO on LD it should look like that:
Guardian = Only shield-bash
Recon = Dash
Striker = None
Will be some balance...
Would be cooldown between dashes?
PS - Please add some bonuses for playing without shield ;0
@Iamnoone
tl;dr
@Mtax
Shield Bashing into a skirmish is so OP, the Guardian that does that is credit to team.
tl;dr
Too long; didn't reply.
:3
We're going to have a war now, right?
Also, it'd be cool if they changed the Barbarous Thorn Shield to instead have a bigger bash. The description justifies it. Gets stabbed by a toothpick-wielding, Thorn Shield-loving skolver clone.
EDIT: PS - Please add some bonuses for playing without shield ;0
I've read a few times that shields are intended as a required piece of equipment, just like weapons. Just like weapons, you can also de-equip shields. in asking this, you should also be asking for bonuses without playing with a weapon. /sarcasm
I don't have any links, but I think I remember Nick saying the stuff about shields.
@Neodasus
If something is too long, you don't need to advertise to all us that you haven't read it. If you're too lazy to read someone's comment that's directed at you, that's cool, but don't go bringing up the same topics elsewhere that the person has already covered.
@Autofire
Once this is implemented I want to try a Depth 1 run without any weapons, shieldbashing enemies only ^_^ lol everytime I say that word I hear the demoman's scream.
lol everytime I say that word I hear the demoman's scream.
Wait...what? I don't even...
And yes, I wanna try that when they add this. Scale Shield, FTW! Runs into T3 Heart of Ice.
Also, who wants to kill Vanaduke with just full Royal Jelly set, and no weapons? Clash of the royal tyrants, eh?
If omega shell gives longer stun/more damage/more uses of the shield bash and more uses of the shield dash, I think it will start being used a lot more. I am interested to see if the shield bump will do different damage depending on the shield, or even different damage types.
If this is implemented into lockdown, wouldn recon be able to execute these actions invisible? And if a guardian equips the hammer we will have super mobile tanks (not that they can tank much in T3 anyways).
Oh, and Zeddy's shadow defender thing will actually be viable.
Isn't mega speed boost op?
Isn't damege bonus op?
Isn't shield canceling connected with asi and fast possition change op?
Isn't fast escape when nobody other can catch you op?
Isn't fking striker op?!
You see balance? Me no. Shieldbash/Dash will align chances. Introduction it to Defender and Recon at last *maybe* will make other clases some more powerful, make it playable and make it some people stop playing Striker-only.
tl;dr
Wait... Is that Iamnoone I hear coming? TAKE COVER!!!
Im a little worried.
It just seems....too much?
I was mainly talking about my freind, who uses arrow keys and zxc. Except with only using one finger for zxc. Shield bashing would be a little awkward for him.
Okay soo...
Will these be available in PvP ?
How effective is the knock-back ?
If you can passively knock-back with an ability, whats the point in the Troika weapons existing ? Seems like Troika will have no use once these abilities come out. Dash back or Bash+Knock-back+Stun. Dashing back will provide a massive defensive boost or offensive boost if you go foward, if you need to create room this would prove to be more effective. Bash does everything Sudaruska does without a charge, instantly, with seemingly faster recovery..Oh and guaranteed stun instead of a stun chance.
If you ask me this is more reason to choose a Brandish or other weapons.
Oh Tin-Foil-Hat take off your little Tin Foil hat, its creeping me out
Why else would OOO have made a Gear balance survey and this "preview" in such a short time span?
Conspiracy I say....
Now you need to add some new content to balance these changes which will make the game SO MUCH EASIER.
Or just buff all the enemies to these changes.
EDIT: Would be nice to use with my extra Swiftstrike Health. I barely use that thing for defence now.
@Grittle - Unless they plan on majorly nerfing offensive based armors, the new abilities give even more reason to use the offensive based armors more than ever now.
Man, ok. I've waited long enough for you guys. I was wondering when someone would pick up on it, but here it is. You don't know how huge this is for competitive PvP, and how this will change the game for up and coming guilds with a fair amount of talent. Let me spell it out for you:
Dash invincibility frames get past Polaris soft-locks. Do you guys realize how game-changing this is for guilds that aren't as wealthy as jempire? It makes games more skill-intensive and not so much gear-dependent. This is Nick's way of balancing Lockdown without any actual balancing.
I think dashing is great concept to ad variety to the game but can't seem to shake the feeling that there is an opportunity being wasted?
It seems that instead of giving every shield the ability to dash/bash it could be better to create a whole new line of shields that have this ability instead (maybe it could branch of from the swift strike). Shield that can dash would lose health every time they dash (about a third but could very between shield to shield and at least a third of health is require to preform a dash) and they would have less health than shields that can't dash.
Hmm, there seems to be quite a few people familiar with these new abilities, how they affect the difficulty of the game, and whether or not they are available for use in lockdown. And here I thought they hadn't been made available for testing yet. *rolls eyes*
I imagine dashing will be fun to putz around with, although I can't think of too many practical uses for any short ranged dash. As for shield bashes, since swords have ranged attacks with charge spam, it's only fair that gunners and bombers get melee attacks.
Was expecting a long, barren wait for pets. All these new features in the interim are a pleasant surprise.
This all looks really cool, just based on the description given so far and...since battle sprites should be here in the next month or two I would have to say this is a stepping stone toward battle sprites for two reasons.
1. These new abilities sound similar to the "press key" function the battle sprites are said to have.
2. The new abilities have a cooldown which is also a function battle sprites are supposedly going to have.
Very interesting...
Dash and Shield Bash will make fighting mini monsters more manageable for new players who may not have completed the specific missions for battle sprites. I wonder if a battle sprite slot will be where dash and shield bash are equipped... Just maybe they will implement the minis into missions as well along with the arrival of these two new features so they will be very beneficial in countering the minis.
Enough speculation from me, what do you think of my theories? *.*
^
That's what everyone is arguing about. We aren't octopuses. And a regular joystick don't have so many keys.
These updates are moving the game away from simple controls with variety in equipment to complex/too many controls with little to no variety in equipment since things are so imbalanced. If I were Picky Nicky I would make both the dodge and bash new types of shields as an option instead of the current and only form of shield which bubbles and can push. It would open up possible diversity in equipment like utility equipment in the active item slots (something that lets you pick up and throw a bomb after you place it, for example) and create more diversity in equipment rather than giving people who are already overpowered even more means of becoming powerful.
Not that I have ever whined about this.
Except all those times that I did.
A monthly update that actually works (Except we've already had shield bashing. Just press X next to an monster and push them out of your way).
OOO, I am proud.
Yes, i just need the option to be there. Can be both new key bind or double tap.
