Dear Nick, something went wrong, you and everyone who play this game from the beginning knows what am I talking about.
The big disappointment. A letter to Nick.
I haven't the foggiest of what you just said.
Good story though.
I suppose you are complaining about either of these 3:
1) The new icons for weapons, equipment and gear.
2) The new UI in general
3) The new promo costumes/accessories.
If it was 1 or 2, I would agree with you wholeheartedly. But if it was number 3, then sorry, the new costumes looks amazing and wonderful.
This feels deeper than just the new UI or new promo. Which it probably is deeper than that.
I'm not about promos, they are for fun.
Overall.
About changes which makes personal and useful things strange and useless.
About where game went from it's way, idea, unique world.
About everything that happened, for last three years.
About how close the game now to its goals.
About dreams.
@Ewbte:
Damn...
You made me feel that SK is at the brink of death...
But still, there is some hope that it will return to its previous glory...
However, nothing good lasts forever, right?
-pain, too?
...If you maybe feel that this post is offensive, uh... please just disregard this or I will say... "No offense."
@Dragneel-Wiki
I wouldn't type all of this if I didn't believe.
Good can became better.
@Skye-Lightning
Only my feelings. I'm glad if there is a players who aren't indifferent too.
Hi old friend. You are worth 10 new friends. And i understood exactly what you are saying.
But sadly, I have reached the point that i'm indifferent and apathetic to this game. I check in every few months to see if actual new content has been added. No Core, no care. And back to ignoring this game with unlimited potential that sadly settles for mediocrity.
This SKnights we have now isn't at all the difficult, arcade centered, non paywall content included with simple gameplay experience, without modified art and weaponry for the sake of it, and with intriguing lore like original Almire - Margel's recent story seemed implemented so fast and with so much lost potential...
I still remember when Nick went to pick up that prize in that conference and he was joyous and full of illusion, he looked like he wanted SK to be so big... at that time not even Shadow Lairs had come out.
This game isn't "bad", just... miscarried?
This game isn't ever going to reach its full potential. I joined during its steam release and have given up on that hope. I've quit giving Spiral Knights even enough money for an elevator pass. I remember how much fun I had on here when I first started. Exploring the clockworks. Then they released RT. Yay a new boss! Later on we got Shadow Lairs. Very expensive to play before they made Shadow Keys straight up cost 1800 ce. Then later we got OCH and Missions.
Then it was promo promo promo LD map promo promo promo LD map LD map promo promo promo.. did I mention promo? We eventually got Danger Missions but even those stopped coming out in return for more promo and LD maps.
This is probably just viewed as a rant but yeah this game went the wrong way before the UI change. Now we have a new shield bash and a dash. Is there any need for this or are players just going to mow the clockworks over even easier now? The money I spent on Spiral Knights? More than I ever should of. I spent some of it because I liked the game, then a bit more because I had hopes they would stop with all these promos and give us some real clockworks content. At this point I would take it all back if I could if I knew sooner this is how things would of been.
I know what you mean.
This game had so much potential. The core mechanics are solid, the art style manages to be both cute and awesome, and the fanbase has been truly amazing (remember sending the cake to OOO?).
Just seeing the game as it is makes me sad, in a way. I started playing this game around one and a half years ago. I still remember the first time I fought snarbolax, the first time I reached moorcroft (through the help of a friend throwing vials at me), my first visit to the auction house. So many little details came together to create this amazing atmosphere, a feeling as if I was actually exploring the world. It was immersive, engaging, and really just beautiful.
I've had 710 hours playtime for the last 4 months. Around the last 100, I began to wonder- where did that feeling go? Where was the joy of testing a new weapon for the first time, the wonder of playing through a new set of levels, the awe of witnessing a new boss' entrance for the first time? No, instead there's promotion after promotion offering recolored variants of the same character equipment in a seemingly desperate attempt at selling more ce. Even the "new" enemies since I've started playing have been basically combinations of older ones that don't make any particular effort to be unique.
This game started as something wonderful. I love the basic gameplay- a combination of hack and slash and bullet hell. However, as I played more, it became harder to forgive it for everything else. There's only one regularly accessible t3 boss, making shadow damage weapons a pitfall for new players who want to stick to a weapon until endgame. Other t3 bosses are locked behind DLC (seriously? DLC in a free to play game?) or large paywallls in the form of shadow keys. Equipment balancing is terrible (did iron slug EVER get an improvement?)- spur? troika? cautery sword? Non-damage bonus armors? On top of all that, the developers seemed completely out of touch with how the game was played-a team guardian that uses heavy armor in a game where glass cannon armor is only 10-20% less effective defensively? Really?
I've come to regret everything I spent on this game (comes out to around $100 I believe). Not because I don't feel like I got my money's worth, but because I feel like it sent the developers the message that they were making the right decisions with this game. It's probably too late for spiral knights by now. rip
If you are complaining about the UI style/new icons, this may interest you: burp.
Otherwise, continue on. :P
EDIT: durp...you posted on that thread already. >.>
Also, on topic, I don't mind the UI really. While I prefer the old one, I can live with the new one. Although, this is all IMHO.
@Redblades@Rommil@Wodanct@Aumir
Thanks guys, different words - one thought.

@Autofire
If talk about UI, icons and other pic things - it is the face of the game.
And for now Spiral Knights lost its face, and starting to lose its soul.
Russians speak funny.
Not Jim-Dale funny, but funny nevertheless.
Privet Ewbte, I am Russian too <3. And I totally can understand you. Same feelings here.
At this point I can't be bothered to regurgitate a 4+ paragraph essay ( rather ironic...) on why this game started going downhill after the May 2011 Crafting Patch which some people dubbed the "Doomsday Patch", which ain't far off, unfortunately.
I guess we'll have to wait for Battle Sprites, then see if Three Rings add any difficult content so that the game as it stands doesn't become a total cakewalk for any monkey and his grandma that have hit End-Game.
Also @Ewbte specifically, I know what you mean on the whole. People don't want to accept the world in it's current state because its far easier to lie to yourself and live a comfortable life while embodying the phrase "Ignorance is Bliss". I don't think enough people understand or - for that matter - even take it seriously when you start talking about greedy politicians, corporatocracy, lack of democracy, corruption etc. And even if they do have something to say there's a chance that they have some ludicrous pre-conceived notions with a nice little cynical theory that has more holes than swiss cheese.
All in all if we want to see SK change, either we need a paradigm shift in which Three Rings can follow suit and break away from the corporate limitations they seem to be exhibiting... Or we've got to construct the biggest wake-up call in the history of arcade-action-adventure games. I think the most difficult part about understanding the current state of the game is that Three Rings seem to be putting on a fake smile and acting as if things are okay when I know they're not. I can't help but think SEGA - since it's on the corporate level - has a lot to do with the current direction of the game; the average MMO with abilities/spells/skills and pets is popular and makes money so SEGA are slowly tearing away everything good about SK by taking it in that direction. That's how it looks to me anyway, it may be different but as I say, it's hard to tell at this point until Three Rings make a major announcement and admit they don't mind getting shafted and robbed of their best game for profit (which I hope is not the case), or admit that they're going to make some major changes to being back the massive portion of the core fanbase that is long-gone.
Actually about current UI, it isn't bad at all, developers provided many features, which players wanted. But graphics used.. it's not even close to how characters made, what music and sounds we hear in game, it doesn't fit game theme at all.
8bit music, 8bit graphics in UI, I think performance should stay the same.
Current character window looks overloaded, same with arsenal.
I have found so many new friends that I just can't make up my mind on this sentence
One old friend is better than two new
I have found better friend in the past weeks than I ever had, care to explain why? Old friends are grumpy and old and want it the way they see fit because they are vets that got ego-boosted through LD...
I have found strong and powerful player to play with that I would never want to part way with. They are so good and it goes beyond Spiral Knights, I can play Dead Island: Riptide with them.
And that is something my old friends can't do since they are butthurt about some life-drama girlfriend thingy thing, like it always happen with old buddies...
TL;DR new friends can be better than two old friends, depending on who you original friends are, and it's a dumb argument
There is a difference between friends I was talking about, and friends in your point of view.
That is a profound letter, Ewbte. Well done.
It really hammers home the point about what has happened to Spiral Knights. The Black Kat event and the combat update are perfect examples of "cool, awesome, WOW things" being added instead of genuine improvements. Updates like these trick people into thinking improvements are happening, usually because of a lot of added flair and fanfare.
The Black Kat event in particular was designed to make a quick buck by introducing exclusive items that required massive amounts of grinding in a short time to get, greatly incentivizing the purchase of an elevator pass. However, while a ton of players purchased an elevator pass for this event, a huge number of them felt cheated and disappointed with how little fun they had with the grinding. I was in that boat myself. It made me not want to buy elevator passes anymore. OOO and SEGA made their money from the event, but at the expense of driving away more of their customers.
The new Storm costume pieces are very significant examples of "cool, awesome, WOW things" as well, in my opinion. Many of them are far more gaudy and detailed than most 5* armors! Yet they are not rewards for any sort of actual accomplishment in the game, and currently only serve to glorify giving money to OOO.
You also present some much-needed good news, though: Everything can still be made right if the decision makers wise up.
I have a few more thoughts to share that specifically have to do with Nick Popovich.
You ask him a very piercing question: "If you from the past could see how this game looks now, what would you think?"
At this point in time, I've been getting the feeling that Nick isn't the person responsible for all the detrimental changes we've been seeing to the game. I'm now betting that, for whatever reason, out-of-touch executives at SEGA are the ones pulling the strings.
The combat update doesn't seem like something Nick would design. Nor have I seen much genuine excitement from him regarding it. He used to be so excited when he talked about upcoming additions to the game early on.
My guess as to what happened is that Nick didn't know what he had with Spiral Knights. He didn't know that the little game he started making with two friends had the potential to be the next Legend of Zelda, and an even better Zelda than Zelda ever was. When he got a new boss and they thought they knew better about what's best for the game, he wasn't able to defend himself. At the extreme case of this scenario, he may be devastated by what his game has become, and yet feels powerless to do anything about it.
If SEGA execs are indeed behind Spiral Knights' transformation into something not itself, Nick could probably be fired if he acts against the will of those execs. He may be not responding to our posts out of fear that it could make his boss(es) question his loyalty and put him on thin ice. He could even be under direct contract to not interact with us beyond answering small questions about recent updates. We don't have enough information about what's going on here.
Let's band together to get the information we need! I see that a quite a few very intelligent players have posted in this thread, and I'd very much like to connect with all of you. I need help pursuing the noble cause of returning Spiral Knights to its former glory!
For anyone wondering who I am, I'm the guy who started these three threads. I have a tremendous amount of expertise and analysis to share, and I'm doing everything I can to get through to the decision makers behind the game that I once loved and know I can love again. This is not a hopeless battle! The facts are on our side; we just need to find a way to convincingly present them to the people in charge.
In closing this post, I want to deeply thank you, Ewbte, for writing and posting your letter. It is an extremely intelligent and insightful piece about a very destructive paradigm that has been affecting not just Spiral Knights, not just the whole of the video game industry, not just businesses in general, but the entire world in many ways. You get straight to the core of the problem and expose how dark it truly is. Yet you also show that the situation is not irreversible, and that help will come if it is asked for.
Nick, we're here for you. If you're afraid to reach out, that's understandable. I just want to let you know that we still care deeply about Spiral Knights, and that we will be up in arms by your side if we get word that you're with us.
@Gametrekker
Big treads you made. Gonna read em soon.
Thanks for thanks.
I need help pursuing the noble cause of returning Spiral Knights to its former glory!
This made me realize the reason SK is like this is because the community asked OOO to do so.
Personally I think it's time for the community to shut up, stop making big fuzzy letter warning OOO the game is dying and let them either kill the game or bring back it's glory.
It's only when you are pushed against the wall that you really start to fight.
We all love Spiral Knights. That's why we discuss about it and try to find way to improve it but after a while it's getting kinda... well IDK what's the term but I'm gonna use redundant. The game is stalling even with new contents/feature.
Let the game make-or-break on his own, if we are always there to support it will never take a creative path but only regurgitate what the forumers ask for. And if by some turn of event, new players test something while the vets are away on vacation and OOO implement it. The game dies instantly.
SK need to recapture his glory on his own and show his community (us) that they can take care of their baby w/o us.
That was my profound 2 cents
I would've replied sooner if I saw this post sooner!
I don't have many words of wisdom like many people have up there, I'm probably gona sound dumb but I'll just say what I feel, please don't laugh:
To me, playing spiral knights is like watching a TV series.
Both have a story line, like TV series will release new episode to continue the plot.
Spiral knights used to release new contents to continue it's plot:
- Crash site, Rescue Camp
- Arriving at the Haven
- T1-T3 Bosses as you are heading deeper into clockworks
- Missions with Story Line
- Introduction of the Swarm and Shadow Lairs, bringing Chaos to previous bosses/Clockworks
Only problem is that the plot stopped there, and for a long time, the story line hasn't been extended.
What it feels like is watching the same DVD series over and over again.
I believe there are people who have defended that there are updates every month, I agree.
They are updates and add-on's, but not carrying on the storyline of the game.
For example: the New user interface & Bash and dash:
These are features of the game and not storyline contents.
It feels like a new way to play with the already existing storyline.
It's like you were sitting on a chair to watch the TV Series before, but now you're just sitting on a couch to watch the same TV series again.
I know they will have a substantial update regarding Battle Sprites in the near future (First half of 2013, which is very soon),
I just hope it's not another "Add-on", I really hope it will include new contents and bring a continuation of the Spiral Knights story to a new Chapter.
Next thing that I want to mention is Genre:
Like TV-Series, there is a Genre to it, just like any game (Spiral Knights in this case).
If it was about Science Fiction fiction in the first season, the Genre will retain in the following.
Just like Spiral Knights, it has (or had) a play style of Simple, easy to understand, straight-to-the-point game play:
- Big party Icons
- Easy to see Buttons
- Icons and colors in depths representing Arena/Clockworks Tunnel/Boss Levels
- Weapon Identification (Unique Weapon Icons that distinguishes different weapon lines - Spur - Brandish - Big sword)
But the recent update regarding the Weapon / Item Icons seems to have deviated from Spiral Knight's Original Genre.
Well, that's just what I think, and sorry for the weird analogy between SK and TV series :S, and thanks for reading this long wall!
- Stelli
yeah man
stuff gets old fast and you lose excitement. Currently, I equate the games enjoyment to be like trying to fap to a forest of trees or free form jazz. Absolutely ridicurus and highly abstract but once you get the hang of it you will appreciate it.
Currently, I equate the games enjoyment to be like trying to fap to a forest of trees or free form jazz. Absolutely ridicurus and highly abstract but once you get the hang of it you will appreciate it.
That's really an awkward and quite disturbing statement....
I don't... even... hum...
What?
As always, the problem is money. There's really not much to it, nor much Nick can do about it.
PS: Also uh, blame the public I guess? Maybe Cleaver and SEGA for wanting profits instead of a niche title? I dunno.
I just want to mention a piece of data that's very vital to the discussion here: According to Steam statistics, Spiral Knights' average player activity has dropped 95% since its peak last year.
Ninety-five percent.
This unequivocally means that the game has changed dramatically for the worse since that time. Games like this don't just lose their player base like that for no reason.
We who remember how awesome Spiral Knights used to be are now speaking up in increasing numbers. It's not time for the community to shut up; it's time for us to put our all into making our voices heard!
It's also time for the developers to finally respond to the passionate message we've been sending them.
Spiral Knights was never a niche title. At its peak, its numbers used to rival Team Fortress 2 just counting Steam logins. Combined with players who logged on via Kongregate or the loader from the official website, Spiral Knights used to be even bigger!
The problem is not money. The problem isn't the community either. The problem is mismanagement. If the decision makers knew how to maintain Spiral Knights' once significant profits and popularity, they wouldn't have made the highly detrimental decisions they've been making.
Since they don't know how to make Spiral Knights successful, and haven't been listening to the players in this community that do, they are now in very dire straits.
Yet another excellent thread with honest opinions and truths about this flop game. Unlimited potential, yet all the most idiotic and dumb decisions made. Its like if Usain Bolt feeds his superkid McDonald's every day. Hmmmm...
*Storytime!*
There was a guy called Usain Bolt. He was the fastest man alive. Then he had a baby, called superkid. Superkid could potentially become wickedly awesome, and become the best. But Bolt decides to give him McDonalds (aka GARBAGE). Every once in a while, Bolt takes his superkid to Whole Foods and buys the healthiest stuff possible, and gives it to superkid. But then he goes back to McDonalds. Superkid's friends give him resources to eat healthy, and ideas, such as excercise and a good diet. But superkid is under full parental control. Bolt continues to feed superkid McDonalds. His friends decide superkid should be better, and show their diet and excercise plan to Bolt. But Bolt decides to not even answer the doorbell, and the kids go away, disappointed. Some accept superkid's failure, others try in vain to help him, but to no avail. Bolt just doesnt care enough. He continues giving superkid crap for his friends to deal with, for eternity.
*Storytme over!*
Now, this is the most idiotic story anyone here has ever read. And for the record Bolt irl is most likely an absokutely terrific person, unlike how he is portrayed here. But yeah, dumb story until you:
Replace Bolt with (SK developers)
Replace Superkid with (Spiral Knights)
Replace McDonald's/Garbage with (crappy gimmick updates)
Replace Whole Foods with (good updates)
Replace Superkid's friends with (you guys, the playerbase)
Replace Excercise and Diet with (new T3 biss and good content)
Do all this, and you have a true story. Sucks, nothing's perfect. :/
Another great story, and dang those statistics T_T wish OOO is listening.. and planning on acting on this. :/
Here is a great story.
I live in Russia, it's a bad country. Why is it bad? Because of government. They could just fix current troubles which is not so hard to change, and improve that they already had after USSR and make it even better with democracy, but they choose the wrong way. They just add new "cool, awesome, WOW things" on ruined foundation, just to blind nation with wrong valuables, you can see it by a tag "meanwhile in russia". It could be funny if it wasn't so sad. They could make a great rich and opened country, with people with shine and clear mind, but they choose the way to gain money with the fastest way - deception and destruction. Now Russia have only generation of parasitizing society with greedy politicians.
And all of this will be crushed, crushed one day with a shame.
As an artist I know how it is hard to recognise your mistake and hark back when a lot of time already spent on work. But people who love your creation will accept you anyway and will love even more if you will listen to them. One old friend is better than two new. If you from the past could see how this game looks now, what would you think?
With love,
Ewbte
